Chirashi Bowl
Aar B.

Good vibe, good variety on the menu. The chirashi bowl hit right. The warm shokupan bread rolls were next level.

ROC city roll, tataki, monkfish special with sambal butter

Ambiance is great--the place is spacious and well-decorated. We did have to wait about 20 mins or so for our table even though we had a reservation. When it was time to be seated, the hostess pointed in the direction of our table and said "the last one over there" instead of walking us to the table, so that was a bit off putting. Our actual waitress was excellent. We had the oysters which were served with a yummy champagne mignonette. The oysters themselves were fresh--nothing extraordinary. The roc city roll was packed with flavor and a nice kick of wasabi. The monkfish special was flaky and tender, although I did not really taste the spice or flavor of the sambal butter that we were told it was served with. It was still pretty good. The tataki was excellent--steak was tender and flavorful and served with what seemed like risotto. Overall it was a yummy surf and turf dinner!

Velvet Belly has Great food, environment, service! Highly recommend, good date night spot.

The food was amazing! I love the calamari and the octopus. The soup is good. They also had a great dessert. The ambiance is so classy and the service was swift.

Everything we ate was delicious! We got the salty bread appetizer (yum), three sushi rolls and an order of fries and my husband and I left full but not stuffed. The ambiance was very trendy, but there was a good mix of people here. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is more on the expensive side, so we definitely enjoyed it for our anniversary. A good spot for a special occasion.

Free birthday ice cream- hazelnut

Love the look of the place right when you walk in. Kind of unexpected but in a nice way. The lighting was perfect and seating was comfortable, cute pictures on the walls and I wonder if they are family members of the owners. The waiters are nice informative and attentive. You know it's a fancy place when they offer three different kinds of waters. Ended up getting the grilled oysters for appetizers to split and wish we had more than 6 to share. The cocktail I had was refreshing just forget the name of it. The entree i got was the sfg sushi roll and come to find out it was one of the popular items on the menu. I could see why with all the flavor. I love like lobster so I'll probably get the lobster roll next time. We got desert and since it was my birthday they offering a scoop of free hazelnut ice cream!

Oxnard Roll: salmon, pickled strawberries, shiso, scallions, strawberry gastrique

We had a lovely dinner tonight on the patio at Velvet Belly. Everything that we tried was interesting and fantastic. One item stood out as the best -- the Oxnard Roll (salmon, pickled strawberries, shiso, scallions, strawberry gastrique). This was so unique and "out there" but the combination just works. It was seriously crave-able. Everyone should try it. The SFG roll was fantastic as always. Not pictured but also yummy was the VB Burger with a nice blend of meat cuts and addictive fries. As always, service at Velvet Belly was outstanding. We never wanted for anything. Our server was very friendly and helpful to guide us. We'll definitely be back again!

Sushi nachos !

SUSHI NACHOS?! BOMB drinks?! Say no more. First off, the ambiance is top notch. They have bar + dining room seating. The food was incredible. Drinks were delicious as well. We came in on a Friday night (reservations required!!), first time here. The sushi nachos are a MUST. first time ever trying sushi nachos. They have a kick to them which I appreciated. Spicy and delicious. My friend got the lobster roll and the other got sushi. The drinks were good. I tried the "little fishes" and a margarita. They make a good marg here. Staff was attentive. I would definitely come back here when I come back to Rochester!! They also have outdoor seating in the summer months which is a huge plus!!

My favorite dish was the New England Chowder Style Fish Soup. It was so fresh and flavorful. The cod tasted so good with the potatoes, carrots, onions and parsley. All of our dishes were prepared by a very friendly lady who immigrated from the DR. Everything tasted incredible and we left feeling very satiated. Definitely can't wait to come back! Would recommend making reservations beforehand since there's only space for ~16 ppl.

It was creamy and well portioned even for two of us sharing. We then opted for the littleneck clams, which was served with chorizo. The broth/soup was perfect to dip some house rolls! We then ended with our favorite thing on the menu - the shrimp sliders, well seasoned and served with a side or chips For dessert we had the lovely, rich budino. A cup of coffee on the side hit the spot! What I truly love about this place is the transparency - the cook is right in front of you! This is one of our new (to us) favorite spots to go to and to bring our friends and family to that…read morehaven't tried it yet! Our first visit was in January and we've been back 2 more times already. The main dining room is down stairs. The bar area upstairs seems very lively and inviting as well, and I've heard there's patio seating we want to try in the late spring. Service was excellent and very attentive. We loved everything we tried. You can do things traditional tapas style or you can go the appetizer and entree route. We had the calamari to start and some cocktails. For our entrees we each ordered the "feature" of the evening -- my fiance got the steak and I got the salmon. My fiance is pretty 50/50 on how good his steak experiences are in restaurants and he was very satisfied with the entree he had. My salmon cakes were SO good, everything tasted very fresh. The server also did a great job recommending a white wine to pair with my meal. We finished off with our dessert, I had the flourless chocolate torte and my fiance had (I can't recall exactly) a banana cream cheese churro I think? The desserts were amazing every time we've gone. We've had more chances to try other tapas items, the arancini is delicious as well. Also of note was that we had a good group dining experience here in February for a family members birthday. Overall if you haven't tried this spot make sure you do!

I throughly enjoyed the salad - crisp greens, perfect dressing and hot, crispy calamari. The tuna bowl followed - flavor was spot on, but the tuna itself was disappointing - tasted thawed and texture was meh. The biggest disappointment with Tapas was just the location itself being down in a dark basement - not my favorite environment. Would try again when the weather is nice and their patio is open. Server was very nice!

Boss Fights and Bites Review - Pane Vino on the Avenue…read more "Welcome back to Boss Fights and Bites -- where we take on the battles of flavor one bite at a time. Today, we're stepping into Pane Vino on the Avenue, and this one was special because we came here to celebrate my wife's birthday." "Right away, Pane Vino gives you that intimate, date-night kind of feel. The lighting is low, the atmosphere is calm, and it feels like a place where you're meant to sit back, take your time, and enjoy the moment. It's not loud or chaotic -- it's relaxed, comfortable, and welcoming." "The service matched that same energy. The staff was friendly, attentive, and never rushed us. They checked in when needed, made sure everything was good, and let us enjoy the night. When you're celebrating something important like a birthday, that kind of service really matters." "Before the food even came out, they brought the bread to the table -- and honestly, that deserves its own mention." "The bread was warm, fresh, and soft on the inside with a nice crust. Paired with the butter, parmesan, and olive oil, it was one of those appetizers you keep reaching for without realizing it. Simple, but done right -- and that's always a good sign." "Now let's talk about the food -- because that's the main fight." "We ordered the chicken parm, and presentation-wise, it came out looking exactly how you want it to. A generous portion, nicely plated, and you can tell right away this isn't something that was thrown together." "The chicken itself was thick and cooked properly. The breading had a nice crisp to it without being greasy, and the inside was tender and juicy -- not dry at all. That balance is key with chicken parm, and they nailed it." "The sauce was well done. Not too sweet, not too acidic -- it complemented the chicken instead of overpowering it. You could taste everything working together instead of one flavor taking over." "And the cheese? Melted evenly across the top, good coverage, no burnt spots, no rubbery texture. Each bite stayed together and felt intentional, which tells you the kitchen takes pride in what they're putting out." "Overall, the chicken parm was classic, comforting, and executed well. No gimmicks -- just solid Italian food done right." "So here's my verdict: Food quality -- strong. Service -- consistent and professional. Atmosphere -- perfect for a date night or special occasion." **"Now let's put some numbers to it. Food: 8.5 out of 10. Service: 9 out of 10. Atmosphere: 9 out of 10. Overall rating for Pane Vino on the Avenue: 8.8 out of 10."** "That's my take -- now I want to hear from you. Have you been to Pane Vino? What's your go-to Italian dish? Drop it in the comments, and don't forget to like and subscribe for more reviews, only on Boss Fights and Bites."

I had made our…read morereservation for 5pm (earliest reservation time) and upon arrival we were the only ones there, with the exception of one patron eating and drinking at the bar. We were greeted by the hostess, that I believe was either the owner or part manager of the restaurant. She sat us down and gave us menus (didn't mention the specials) and then proceeded to go and turn on all of the Christmas decorations in the restaurant and tell us about her deals when purchasing all of them. Finally upon her return the waitress took our drink orders and when I asked she gave us the listing of specials for the evening. My niece had a specialty mocktail that was described as having a "hint" of lavender- turns out the other items were done with a hint and all my niece (and I tasted) was the strong presence of lavender. For appetizers we ordered fried calamari that came with the typical red sauce- the fried calamari was good, but nothing special. We also ordered the lamp lollipops for an additional app and let me just say- they were the BEST part about our dinner! Perfectly cooked to medium rare and seasoned and grilled to perfection. It was my neices first time trying them and she said she couldn't wait to have them again. For our main dishes, my niece had the penne vodka- which was "okay" but really lacked on favor, nothing really special about it. I honestly think she makes it better at home. For my entree I had the Salmon- which came with a very thick strawberry sauce over the top of it. My fish was cooked perfectly and tasted great- without the thick "strawberry like" sauce over the top of it (I ended up scraping it off of the fish. I also wasn't a fan of the black rice-it had a very off putting smell and after having my first taste decided one bite was enough.
