This place gets no stars way over priced for very subpar food. The hostess that i spoke to on the phone seemed irritated and disinterested and it came off as rude I decided to try vels because it was hyped up by family and local friends. NEVER AGAIN I had ordered the Filet Mignon which was over cooked, dry, and flavorless as was the mashed potatoes and the carrots I got instead of the sweet potatoes I had ordered. Nice little restaurant with a quirky little feel to it. Great clam chowder, fried clams, and a fantastic lobster bisque. I go here a few times during my annual vacation from San Diego. I have a fish allergy, and all their chowder & bisque are made with no fish stock added to it. Most restaurants around the Southeastern MA area use fish stock in their chowders. Why add fish stock to clam chowder or lobster bisque? I want the full clam & lobster flavor. read more

Stopped in on a whim one Sunday for lunch. We were a bit hesitant to try something new and my husband was afraid he wouldn't find much he liked. Well, let me tell you-this place has something for everyone! I had a red sangria that was out of this world and the bartender gave us incredible, friendly service throughout our meal, even as locals and regulars poured in. We split a small antipasto and even brought some home. We had a cup of lobster bisque each, filled with claw meat at a super reasonable $5.99/cup. We also split the Portuguese littlenecks. Delicious. They were in a thick red tomato sauce-so seemed more Italian to me, but good just the same. We are plotting and planning our next visit to hopefully try some steak tips, which I hear are great! read more

As an Italian, I was extremely offended by their offering of Italian dishes. Pizza.... Cheddar Cheese! Chicken Parm.... Cheddar Cheese! Eggplant Parm.... Cheddar Cheese! If you have any sense of Italian food, you would know that Italian dishes use Mozzarella or Provolone! Just rename your sign and call yourself Vel's "not really" Italian Cuisine Seafood! Went to Vel's for a golf charity dinner. The place was absolutely packed and yet the service was unbelievably fast and courteous despite the enormous crowd. The food was all fresh hot and absolutely delicious. I don't know how they made that many meals with such high quality but I would definitely go back here again! We went there last night, a party of four. We usually go there maybe once a month or so, and I always get the Baked Stuffed Haddock Newbury. That is the only meal I get there. That is why I go. Two of us ordered the same thing. When it was served, and I tasted it, the fish was dry and the stuffing was burnt. Both meals were the same. I called the waitress over and she took both meals back. She asked me if I wanted something else and I said no, I want the haddock. She came back to the table and said the chef said that is how they are cooked and asked me again if I wanted something else, I declined. My dinner partner decided not to wait for a different meal. he would stick with the haddock, so she brought BACK to the table my meal and his and asked him what one was his. He chose the one that he thought he already had his fork in and ate as much of it as he could. I decided I would to speak to the manager about the meals,I figured it is better to let them know why you are unhappy rather than just to not going back. (So I thought) She approached our table with a bit of an attitude. I explained about the overcooked meal and the first thing she said to me was, "well they took it off the bill didn't they?" I told her I don't care about the bill. I came here for a specific meal and if it's not cooked correctly wouldn't she rather know than to have us not return? She said the cook is new and he left it in the convection oven too long.( So they knew it was overcooked yet still tried to serve it?) They did not offer to make me a new one, they just offered me something else, AND gave the other person that ordered the haddock, a meal that left the table, was sent back to the kitchen and was brought back in the same dish. That seemed a little sketchy to me. I have always got a good meal there, I know every place has an off night. I believe they should have made two baked haddock dishes fresh, especially when she admitted they were cooked too long. I don't know about anyone else but $16.99 for a meal is not cheap. It should be cooked so you can enjoy it. I think the manager should get a refresher course on customer service and maybe a little charm school might help too. read more

Tried this restaurant on a whim with my daughter. I ordered pizza and my daughter ordered spaghetti and meatballs. The pizza was good, the spaghetti and meatballs not so much. The pasta came with meat sauce not marinara, not much taste and it did not stick to the pasta. There were 2 meatballs . My daughter couldn't cut them with a fork, so she used a knife . They were rubbery and salty, No sauce on them. I would suggest skipping the Italian food at this restaurant . Waitress was nice and efficient . Probably our first and last time at Vels! read more

Me and my friend came here for lunch. She got the eggplant Parmesan and I got the chicken Parmesan sub. This place is basic. Not good but not bad. But not great. It kinda sucked actually. Not something to rave about and definitely don't bring a date here. Feels like we are in the middle of New Hampshire. Anyways. I went with a recommendation. We just missed lunch menu but waitress said we were close enough and gave us choice of lunch or dinner. Lunch specials included shepherd's pie which my wife ordered and it was in a large casserole dish. Delish. I ordered the "hot turkey dinner" and was brought a large platter served like a hot turkey sandwich/dinner hybrid. All white meat, lumpy home-made mashed pot. Fresh butternut squash stuffing rolls/butter and cran sauce. We were charged lunch prices yet the meals were dinner portions. I didn't finish mine but my famished wife did hers. Waitress was old-school great with charm and service. The menu is extensive with Italian dishes (antipasto looked mouthwatering). Based on this experience and my wife's prior visit when she had swordfish I give it a solid rating. Add the modest prices and great service you can't go wrong. read more

The staff here sucks, I'm sitting in the restaurant currently... after two hours I finally received my food it is ice cold, they kept having to substitute things (5 times) for people in my party because they kept running out. This is the worst restaurant experience I've ever encountered. Seriously should have saved my money and gotten take out from a different restaurant. This restaurant is older than me so in all fairness, someone must enjoy it... but that someone isn't me. I went there tonight for the fifth or sixth time in my life and was not only disappointed but am sitting here six hours later sick! The rolls were stale and hard in the corners. The dinner salad consisted of the "core" part of the lettuce, which was yellow and otherwise gross. The cucumber slices were about three inches thick and too solid to cut. The marinara sauce for the mozzarella sticks was too tangy... maybe rotten tangy?? The mozzarella sticks were under cooked and cold in the middle. My husband had the seafood casserole (most expensive seafood on the menu) and it was hard and the outside of the meat was crusty instead of being soft...and it was served with crabmeat stuffing that was dry and looked as if it hadn't seen any crabmeat. It was served without butter to top it all off. My stuffed shells did not taste very good at all.. and what little I ate is literally still making me sick to my stomach!! On a good note, all of the staff we encountered were very friendly and our waitress was extremely attentive. read more

I haven't eaten here in over a year, due to such a heavily lackluster meal the last time I was there. Tonight, I thought I'd give it another shot. Nope, same as it was. I ordered the lobster bisque and 4 piece fried chicken dinner. The bisque was SO SALTY, I couldn't eat it. Then the fried chicken (which was $15) looked like a wing, drum, thigh and breast from possibly a canary (no joke, VERY tiny), loaded with a ton of fries. No good. I took a group of three friends for lunch having read the reviews and thinking that perhaps a few folks had a bad day, because there were several reviews liking the place and it's been there forever. Alas, we all had a bad day. The place is dark, the chairs were alarmingly close to the ground, and the banquettes had torn covers. Smallish prints of old movie ads were what passed for decor. The ambience was supplemented by a few barflies at the bar and several houseflies buzzing our table. I immediately thought about "Restaurant Impossible," seeing Chef Robert taking a crowbar to the place, but thought, well, I hear the food is ok here, and we were having a good conversation, so I was willing to see. Two of us had the fried fish plate, said the fish was bland and tasteless. Their squash was watery and unseasoned, the mashed potatoes right out of the box. Another had a burger, arrived barely warm and her mashed potatoes were stone cold. My Alfredo had four or five of those freezer-burned shrimp, overlooked mushy broccoli, and a sauce that came straight from a can, with a curious off-taste that seemed to have lost its way before finding the cheese aisle. Ok, so we can at least have coffe and dessert, right? The cream puff sounded divine, what with the description of bourbon Madagascar vanilla bean cream, dark chocolate, and such. Alas, right out of the freezer, with condensation forming on the old chocolate shell, pastry so leathery I got out my pocketknife to cut it, gooey filling an odd combo of sickly sweet and nearly tasteless, and all surrounded by gobs of America's favorite, Cool-Whip. Disgusting. The lemon cake was a bit better, but nobody at the table wanted more than a few bites. And just to top it off, the coffee (both regular and decaf) was tepid and watery. We beat a hasty retreat and regretted spending more that twenty bucks apiece for this awful stuff. As Casey Stengel (I think) once said, "Doesn't anybody know how to play this game?" I think the only reason this place stays open at all is because nobody who's a regular knows any better. We surely won't ever darken their door again. read more

We didn't even get to the food, customer service was horrible. We walked with our feet, The main dining room only had one other couple when we were seated. Waitress never stated her name, ok fine, but was surly and seemed to be rushed in an empty dining room. Placed drink orders, received the but for some reason the waitress never met our eyes or acknowledged our thank you's. We tried to make eye contact but sadly she never even looked at us. Placed our orders, me-lobster bisque with clams casino. I specified i would be having two apps for dinner. My boyfriend blue cheese burger. We had a sip of our drinks and low and behold out comes my lobster bisque---what? I specified i wanted the two apps for dinner.. When that was pointed out to her she argued that i would have the clams, when he was eating his dinner. Really that wasn't what was ordered and now you are challengling me. She took it back to the kitchen but she was complaining to the kitchen staff about me. Really you placed the order wrong and know your complaining about me We put money down for drinks and left.. I hope she had to pay for the dinners because she was awful. We have been there in the past and the food has always been good. She just sucked. I don't get to Wareham often, but this had been one of my regular stops. It's definitely going downhill... The decor hasn't been touched in decades; that could be overlooked if the food was great, but it's not. The lobster bisque used to be loaded with meat and now there's hardly any lobster and it has an overwhelming sherry taste. Out of a party of 8, half had an underwhelming experience. Great local place. Best French fries in Wareham easily. Great and ample fried seafood, good kale soup, pizza, steak tips. Lots of cape restaurants have basically the same menus but vels is consistently good and cheaper. Great mixed drinks by friendly bartenders. Stopped by on a recommendation, last night. Fettucini was not creamy nor cheesy, bread was stale and marsala was watered down. Pointed out that this was not a traditional fettucini to Donna the waitress, who was less than pleased. After that, she never stopped by to see if how we were doing or if we wanted anything else i.e. coffee, dessert etc. Also, beverages were not itemized on the bill, so we were unaware how much a glass of wine actually costs. The interior could use some updating and restroom was dirty. Will not be returning any time soon. read more
