TLDR; went in to swap my saddle, willing to pay extra for a premium experience, they attempted to up sell a $325 fitting service and were unwilling to assist otherwise. After significant research into an issue I was having with my saddle, I went into Velosmith because according to the Selle Italia website they are a dealer participating in the idmatch (a "30 second" fitting procedure) and saddle test experience. The person I spoke with at the shop was friendly and helpful (although he was very quick to mention the $325 fitting that was a very important part of figuring out any type of saddle issue), but suggested that I contact their fitting expert to learn more about the demo program (same thing as the saddle test), so I left and contacted her by email. In that exchange the fitter was very nice, but pointed out immediately that the demo program is only for those who have gone through the $325 fitting experience. While I do believe there can be significant value in having a professional fitting. I just don't think I need one in this scenario because I've already run through most of the troubleshooting steps on my own to narrow down the potential causes (the Internet is a fabulous thing). I had really hoped that Velosmith would be that perfect boutique bike shop in a convenient location, and I would have been happy to pay more for that personalized expertise. But that wasn't the case. Bike tune up and replaced some parts, including tires. Extremely happy and satisfied. This shop is recommended. I have had tuneups in other venues throughout the NShore and Chicago over many years. This is THE FIRST time I've actually noticed a difference in my ride. Actually feels smoother, shifts much better, really stops now when brakes are hit, the new bar tape is comfortable and responds to touch. Happy with the new tires too... More comfortable. Update on my review- this is my go to shop for all needs! Bobby and Elliott have been terrific helpers with my bikes and keeping them on the road/groad. I don't pretend to be a master mechanic- I take the rides in whenever they need love. Always come back in perfect working order and very pleased with the work. Went back a year later to borrow a tool to tighten my seat & got treated like a fat old lady that had no place at a high end bike store. Guess I don't bike fast enough so my money isn't good enough. But don't blame Velosmith too much. Age & weight discrimination is a problem with many the high end bike businesses all over the USA. It comes more from the clients that the stores. But still, I wish they had been nicer. It made me feel awfully silly. Even though I do own a Seven and bought one for my niece, next time I'll go to the local neighborhood bike store. read more

I am very surprised this place hasn't been reviewed yet. It's a gem. This isn't a Huffy dealer, so get ready to spend your money! They carry the cream of the crop, and that's a good thing for those that know the names Parlee, Colnago, Seven, Mosaic, and Campagnolo. If those names don't strike desire, just go to Wal-Mart and buy that Huffy! If you ride a lot, these folks can help you out. The maintenance and fit departments are staffed with originators, not imitators. When you need a serious bike, they will work with you to get you geared up, geared right and looking your best. It's a small place, so they will carry a limited selection. What they do carry will be the correct version of that specific product. You won't find a cheap pump, but the one they have will last and fit both Schraeder and Presta valves. Before you buy, give them a try. They've got the knowledge and patience to help you out. I'll stop here everytime I'm in the area just to make sure my salivary glands are working properly! read more

I recently had a mishap with my 2007 Moots Vamoots that required me to bring the bike in for a crash check. Since Alberto's closed in Higland Park and I bought the bike at the late Turin I decided to go with Velosmith Bicycle Studio in Wilmette. How could I go wrong with Alberto's son Tony who owns the shop? Cycling runs in their DNA. So one thing lead to another as so often happens with these things and it was decided that we should replace the original carbon fork, stem and handle bar. That development caused me to decide to do a long-needed fitting to get the bike to where I thought it needed to be for my challenging group rides. The fitting that was performed with Rachel seemed to go well and there was good interaction that really helped direct my decisions. In the end we went with a much more aggressive positioning on the bike and picked out the appropriate components to make it happen. I've ridden the bike a few times now and could not be happier with the results. It's as if I'm riding a new machine! I'm definitely able to squeeze more power out of the bike and the bike seems much more responsive. The ride is very comfortable which is important since I'm not as young as I wish I were. The decision to go with a carbon fiber handle bar (previously aluminum) was the right decision since Rachel said I'd experience less fatigue in my upper body--she was right. My only regret is that I didn't make these changes sooner. I really was pleased with the professionalism and sound advice that I received while helping me to maximize my riding experience. My cervical spine is totally fused from C1 to T1, and my head movement is extremely limited in all directions. I've been riding for 40 years and didn't want to give up the sport, so I went to Velosmith to check out a custom frame that would keep me upright, but still have a road bike feel. Tony Bustamante did a very comprehensive fitting, and brought in a physical therapist who could address my physical issues to fine tune the fit. We ordered a custom Seven Evergreen S frame, and after some back and forth on handlebars, settled on a Jones Bar which has been fantastic. I can't say enough about everyone's professionalism, skill level, and level of compassion with the goal of keeping me on the road as we created the perfect bike to address my needs. Thanks to Tony, Andrew, and the crew at Velosmith, my road cycling continues. This is truly a custom shop and you can expect to come close to maxing out your credit card.
