Usually when the kids bike with my…read morehusband I get stuff done around the house, but yesterday we thought a family bike ride would be fun. The dishes, laundry and cleaning could wait since it's not like anyone is coming into our house soon. ' I hopped on my trusty bike purchased from Green Bay Cycles in 2013. To be honest it's probably been used a dozen times since then so while old it's still in pretty good condition. However, we immediately realized that I had a flat tire so the kids set off for bike riding fun with their dad. I saw Green Bay Cycles is closed on Sundays right now, so I enjoyed a rare moment of peace and silence while unloading the dishwasher. They reopened today (Monday) and my husband brought in my bike in his typical quarantine uniform (comfortable clothes, mask and gloves). They took the bike for him, fixed my tire, tuned it up and sprayed it with disinfectant spray. It didn't take them long at all and they were super sweet not to charge us for it either. My husband said he felt completely safe with the experience and will continue to go there for our biking needs during quarantine...and of course after.

Almost unreal how great this place is…read more First off, just on vibes, this is an amazing bike shop. You're effectively rolling your bike into someone's living room and they just jack it up and make it all right again. Kelly also fiercely believes in being part of the local community and takes every opportunity to show it. So on those bases alone, it's an amazing community bike shop. What puts it over the top is the quality and mechanical skill. I had a tune up gone bad at another highly rated bike shop in town this year. Nothing too drastic but persistent nagging problems that their best mechanics couldn't resolve despite repeated visits over multiple months and several multi-week stays in their shop. Eventually I just lost faith and brought it into Mack's. They politely pointed out several of the immediate issues (which the other shop had somehow entirely missed), but were reasonably conservative about their ability to diagnose the deeper and more intermittent issues I was experiencing. They quoted me two weeks. Two *hours* later I got a call. They had rebuilt all of the major systems. Everything was fixed, and it was less than a tenth the price of the other shop. I can't think of any higher proof of the quality of the work they do and their true attention to detail. Don't even think about going anywhere else!

Others may have had better service, but believe the negative reviews they have received because they are true as well. I went here only out of convenience because I work nearby and the previous shop I went to was in Humboldt park. Rather than going far out of my way, I thought I'd give this place a try out of convenience. But suffice it to say the pretentious roadie vibes are very real here and I should've stuck with my old shop. I went in to get my tubeless tires changed. That was it. It turned into sooo much more. When I first went in, I had already previously purchased tires in the fall and didn't bother getting the service done until spring. The tech laughed at me for not bringing in the correct tires for the bike.... I explained, no they are correct, I am not stupid. He then laughed it off... oh you're right, they are just so freaking dusty I couldn't tell(they had been in my basement since winter) This then turned into inspecting my bike and telling me I was going to need new handle bars all of a sudden? A full inspection because "things weren't working", and then the ancillary fees associated" new bar tape, labor, etc.) I reluctantly agreed, which turned into a 2 month process with my bike. They called me saying I needed new forks but could only get the ones they had picked, they couldn't return it to me without doing that work. The back and forth went on for so long I eventually said let me pay you for the work you have done and give me my bike back. It turns out the only work they had done was disassembling my bike. Take the bearings out of the forks, taking the bar tape off. And giving it back in that condition without the tires being done when that was all I wanted in the first place. Then they charged me 40 bucks for their "work". Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. After asking around, there are better shops in Evanston. Save yourself the trouble you might encounter from these guys. Thanks but no thanks Pony.
