We have now bought 3 e-bikes from this store! We would have bought a 4th but they didn't have any in stock of the one we wanted but they did look up the closest place that did have that bike which we appreciated. All the salesmen are very knowledgeable - we have worked with Ryan in particular but they all take the time to listen to what we want and explain in detail about the bike. We even found out the best bike rack to buy that is geared to if your bike has a fender or not. It costs a bit more but it is also lighter weight and has rollers so more mobile. My at-home workouts have gotten stale during our stay-at-home. There are only so many times you can walk around the neighborhood or follow along to a YouTube video. Knowing that I wanted some fresh air and a change of exercise modality, my husband surprised me with a bike. And, of course, when you buy a bike you need a helmet! After trying to order from another local store and being told the helmet wouldn't arrive until mid-September, I located a better helmet at the same price point from George Garner Cyclery and placed an order for curbside pickup. Grateful to have this bike shop in my neighborhood! I brought my bike in for a simple repair knowing that it could be resolved with either a quick adjustment or a few parts and labor. Jeff ended up assessing that new parts were required and completed the device that evening at a great rate! I was glad to see that Jeff also left the previous parts for me to inspect - this gives reassurance that work wasn't done by the mechanic simply to gain income from a job that wasn't necessary. I have always tried to use local businesses and when I moved to Northbrook start taking my bike to Garner Cyclery. These last few weeks I have never been treated so rudely. I was told I would need to leave my bike for a month to have a tune-up. Make appointments! Who is going to give up their bike during the summer a month? I have had thee flat tires in two weeks and when I brought it it yesterday, they told me it would take 5 days to get my bike back. It takes ten minutes to change a tire. I don't know where to start, EVERYTHING IS GREAT! My family has been loyal for almost 40 years and I would never go anywhere else!!! I have no idea where one would get such wonderful service elsewhere! So knowledgeable, so friendly, so helpful! Not to mention that they tend to match competitors prices, and more importantly they have some of the best labor prices for work done on your bike in the area (as long as they don't take this as an excuse to make them higher, LOL!) They have also been very helpful with outfitting my bike in anyway I wish even when it seems kind of crazy... I have to thank them for the great service! They're always willing to talk on the phone to help me as well and never have an ill word to say against me... They're just great give them a try and then you'll find out how great they really are! I always try to shop local and this is my first summer in Northbrook. I need a new tire and inner tube so I went to the shop, which clearly indicates open on Saturday at 9:00 AM on both front and back doors. They also have a sign at each door, indicating temporary hours through April 2020, opening at 10 AM on Saturdays. Since this is August, I arrived early and tried to enter at 9 AM. Even though there was a gentleman in the store and heard me knocking, he didn't even have the courtesy to look up and acknowledge me. It would take them less than five minutes to post the correct, current hours on the doors. If this is the manner in which they treat local clients, I'll take my business to the bike shop in Glenview. read more

This past weekend my husband and I went to a couple bike places so I could check out bikes. The first store we visited the salesperson did not seem very knowledgeable or enthusiastic about the bikes. Since the hubby had bought his current bike from George Garner Cyclery a few years back we decided to drive a bit further and see what they had to offer. I knew nothing about bikes going into the store but Paul, after hearing what we were looking for in a new bike, immediately started pointing out the pros and cons of the bikes in the store. We settled on a couple Treks and Paul explained everything there was to know about the women's line of Trek bikes and how they were designed differently from other brands. He really knew what he was talking about and never once made me feel pressured. He may have been working there but he really loved what he did. Bikes were more than just a job to him. We were there for almost two hours as Paul explained about the different bikes and got a couple ready for me to test ride. I never felt rushed throughout the experience. I left with a new Trek bike and some new accessories, completely happy about my purchase and about the entire experience. My husband and I have been searching for a new bike for our son (which is even more challenging during the pandemic since bike shops everywhere are sold out) and George Garner was of great service. They gave me lots of information and advice on what to look for/how to choose the right bike over the phone and even held a specific bike for us with just a $50 REFUNDABLE deposit while we continued to research it and others. The bike was assembled and ready to go when we picked it up two weeks later and their 7-day return policy (which we didn't need) gave us peace of mind in case our son didn't like it or it was the wrong size. I got my Schwinn Scrambler here in 1982 and I still have it! This is a classic old cycle shop that was one of the first Schwinn dealers in the area. They carry the latest in all sorts of bikes (now not a Schwinn endorsed operation) and have a full bike repair service. Yo, this is a great place to get your bike worked on and buy a bike. This joint is a Northbrook landmark. I got my first bike here back in the early 70's. My sister worked there when she was a youngster and I grew up with George. Great people, great customer service and selection. It's great to still have these kinds of "old-school" places still in operation. Wheels is another good place. Smaller selection, focused more on mtn bikes, and that's a good thing. I guess the dude below doesn't realize that most family owned bike shops work with a skeleton crew during the winter months and also have very flexible unset hours of operation during this down time. So, if you like a place where they remember you when walking in, like helping to support the local family owned and operated businessman and great service ... this is your place. read more

Been riding for many years and after a 4 year break needed advice on a new ride to suit my aging body. I really like the staff and the way they operate, awesome selection of high end bikes and solid advice on product, even shipping in inventory from their other locations to let me test ride 6 bikes before final decision. I decided to buy a Tarmac S-Works from their old stock, great price and could not be happier. When there was a problem with the frame George and his crew organized a free rental for my trip to France and while I was away replaced the frame and rebuilt the bike on warranty - awesome service. I have since rented bike from them for friends in town - great ride, Madone, Ultegra - new condition even kitted out with spare tube and air. Highly recommend their rental bikes. This is possibly the best LBS I have ever frequented, and that is saying something. read more

We visited this weekend to get our son fitted for a new bike and were fortunate enough to work with Davelon, she really knows her stuff and helped us find the perfect bike and fit for our son. Within a day they called to tell me it was ready. The price they charged was very reasonable and they were professional. When I called them last night with the back tire which now needed some attention, I told them I was about 5 minutes out even though they were about to close at 7 p.m. They said it would be no problem to wait for me which I thought was flexible and cooperative which you don't see alot anymore. I found the same guy I spoke to in the parking lot unloading some items and he greeted me in a friendly manner and looked at the tire right there and then. He didn't think it would take much fixing and that it probably only needed some air so he took it inside and brought it back in less than 2 minutes. He didn't hear any leaks so he didn't even charge me and only instructed me to bring it back if it leaked air overnight. This business is top-notch in customer service, efficiency and pricing and I highly recommend them for bike repairs and sales. read more

Been to Garner for small things in the past, accessories, etc. The staff is always friendly and helpful. My last visit really impressed me. They did a custom build for me and did a really great job. Labor charges are super reasonable and they complete the work much faster than my neighborhood shop. Received calls and email over the week my bike was with them letting me know the status. They stuck with the original quote, too. They also adjusted a headache brake problem on my other bike in no time -- after I'd wasted at least 1.5 hours making it worse. Wow! I ordered a custom Trek Domane to replace a road bike that I bought at George Garner Cyclery in 2003. Yesterday was almost 60 degrees, which is very odd in February; so I went on my maiden voyage. Even though the wind gusts hit 70 miles per hour on occasion, it was an amazing ride. I even managed to exceed the speed limit on a stretch with the wind at my back. The Experience: After 13 years, my old road bike was pretty dialed in, so the fit was really important. A few medical issues (back) meant that comfort was an important consideration that needed to be addressed on the new bike. The store manager, Jim spent almost 3 hours measuring the specs and settings of my custom order. His attention to detail here was spot on. It was an amazing process that addressed movement, comfort, performance, power, efficiency, etc. While I learned a lot, the real objective was getting the new bike to fit ME as comfortably as possible. All the measurements and fuss that took place 3 weeks ago really don't mean squat. It's that first time you sit on your new bike. The first impression when you throw a leg over, grab the handle bars, shove off, click into the pedals and take those first few strokes. That's when you know if your fit specialist is a Hero or a Zero. My ear-to ear grin kind of said it all. I already knew Jim wore a superhero cape so I really wasn't surprised. The Bike: I ordered a 58cm Trek Domane 6 Project One. To keep this from becoming too geeky, I'll just say it was pretty high end with Dura Ace electronic group (Di2), carbon wheels, etc. With pedals, 2 bottle cages and bottles, DuoTrap (sensor thingy) and a Garmin 1000 bike computer, it weighed just over 16 lbs. I chose a dark navy blue with silver stripe and light blue Trek logo. Matching light blue on the wheelset logos. Looks great- not to blingy, just professional, high tech and unique. Perhaps the best feature is the isospeed decoupler at the junction of the top tube and seat tube. I know they're putting this on many of their bikes now, and with good reason. It is nothing short of a miracle. It works exactly as advertised, which is rare in this business. It absorbs the bumps and road chatter making your ride amazingly smooth. Now it's not full suspension like a mountain bike, so huge potholes aren't going to go well, but regular road issues that cause pain, loss of focus, and ultimately slow you down are removed by this sweet little piece of technology. So long rides suddenly don't seem so long and that is a beautiful thing. The best part is that it does it's thing without creating a "dead" feel that some endurance bikes end up with when their solution doesn't work as well. The bottom line is I love, love, love this bike. Oh yeah, did I mention that I love this bike. The Shop: I've known these guys for a long time and always return when it's time to buy. Sure I'll look around on the Internet and occasionally sneak into a competitive shop under the cloak of darkness, but I always return to George Garner when it's time to buy. Sure I get a good price. Not an amazing price but a good one. The reason I always come back is the package of benefits. Good pricing; Very high quality service; A deep knowledge of the industry; Great brands combined with good inventory on hand; An unyielding commitment to the customer - if something's wrong, they stand behind their products and service and do what it takes to make things right; Two year service with new bike purchase - I originally bought from them because they include that generous 2 year service window, which is nice if you're mechanically challenged (like me). I guess it comes down to a genuine passion for cycling and their commitment to serve all levels of cyclists. I made a mental note of who came in the door during my original fitting. It was an extremely broad group: A couple of like minded "bike geeks" came in for their pre-season tune-ups; A mom and her teenage son looking for a new bike "and an alternative to Xbox," according to the mom; A college guy was looking to revive his old bike to use for transportation between classes; and a middle-aged lady who said she hadn't ridden in 40 years and was looking to increase her activity level. I guess what impressed me most was that they met each customer at their level. I saw another employee help one of the Geeks and "talk shop" as us geeks like to do, and then he turned and helped the lady with her son. The lady/son was a very different customer from the geek and needed an introduction to the options and greatly appreciated the no pressure education they were receiving. It looked like this was a first visit so I think they were starting to collect facts and get a better understanding of the options - but it was obvious they felt welcome and will return with more questions. Not surprising, this experience reinforces my long held belief that the smart cyclist finds a good shop and then helps them help you. read more

The best of the best. I brought in my 1972 Schwinn tandem that had just been wrecked. Jim straightened the fork and replaced several of the heavy duty spokes. It came out like new. We also bought a Specialized racing bike. The price was competitive and I get the horsepower of George Garner to keep it going forever.
