I brought my scooter in for a simple tire change. I even provided the new tire and tube. I waited 2 weeks for the repair. Apparently they have one guy who does scooters, but he's on his own schedule. lol. Anyways. I picked up my "fixed" scooter, and two days later the tire was flat again. I was then frustrated and unwilling to go from north Evanston to Roger's park again, I decided to just sell the scooter. It was a waste of 2 weeks, and $50 for a simple tire change. Never again. I want to support a local bike shop and like the guys here. However, I brought my bike in for tune up. Pretty much every basic thing had not been done properly. The rear derailleur hadn't been adjusted properly, causing the chain to come off into the wheel. The disc brakes squeal unbearably--meaning that they probably dropped brake fluid or some other impurity on the brake pads. This tune-up cost me $125, and they clearly didn't test ride the bike before they returned it to me. Very very sloppy work. I won't be going back. read more

I stopped in to get some lube, as it was starting to rain and I wanted to take care of my chain when I finished my ride. I didn't catch the name of the guy who was helping me (maybe Richard? I'm going to call him Richard, but it was the guy running the shop at like 10:30 am on Tuesday 9/24/24) made me feel super welcome within an instant (which, we all know, isn't the vibe you find in a lot of local bike shops), and when asking him some questions about proper cleaning and oiling my bike after riding in the rain, he asks me to point out my bike outside, and from a distance he immediately could tell by the angle I'd positioned my seat that my handlebars weren't high enough for me. He asks me to wheel it in (mind you, he didn't charge me a dime for any of his time and expertise), and starts doing some measurements, gets me up on the bike, and his first instinct was suggesting things I could try that would AVOID spending money on anything (like "move the seat forward about half an inch and down about 3/4 of an inch, try to grab more towards the center, and extend your fingers so you can sit up", things of that nature), and then tells me to bring it by around the end of the month if those changes don't fix the issues I'd been having (I'm very tall, a bit overweight, probably could stand to gain a bit of core strength, and so the only way I'd avoided getting a really sore back was having my seat super high and at a crazy forward angle). It's worth noting that Richard (I really hope I'm using the correct name) has at least 50 years experience, and I don't think he could stop himself from sharing his hard earned wisdom even if he wanted to. The entire time we're doing this, he's also talking about how bike frames have evolved over the decades, things to be careful about at other bike stores, modifications he's done on other bikes that might be cool on mine, maintenance tips I can do to help me save money and keep my bike in good shape - it reminded me of times I've gone fishing with an old timer who has memorized everything there is to know about a specific lake and all of the fish in in the lake, where if you're smart enough to shut up and listen you'll never have a more educational experience in your life. Even though I knew I needed to get to work, I knew that this was a special opportunity, so I shut up and listened and it was fantastic! And while doing so, he had to answer a number of phone calls from other customers, and without eavesdropping too much, it was clear that he maintains excellent relationships with his customers and has a deep personal investment in their satisfaction and well-being long after the actual transaction is complete. I'm planning on bringing my bike to him tomorrow - the changes improved my speed a whole bunch, but he was right that I need to add a few inches to the height of my handlebars, and Richard runs one of those special local bike shops where it's clearly better than buying on Amazon and doing it yourself (obviously, we should always try to patronize our local bike shops over Amazon, but sadly a lot of them fail to make themselves a more attractive option beyond simply the principle of the matter). You won't have this problem at Roberts Cycle - it's a bargain at twice the price (especially since they're not gonna send you to one of those people who are like "give me $1,000 and I'll tell you how you should have your seat adjusted and if your back still hurts that's your problem"). I'm already in the process of recommending this place to every cyclist I know, regardless of their proximity to Rogers Park, and I'm going to continue to do so from here on out. Just truly incredible service, extremely helpful, and they seem to have no interest in getting me to spend any more money than I absolutely need to there. There'd be a lot more cyclists if more local bike shops were like Roberts. I'd give this place 50 stars if Yelp would let me. read more

Rogers Parkers live in a neighborhood which, in my experience of 5 years living here, is said to value quirky eccentricity, locally-owned mom-and-pop type small businesses, and good value for the money. Patronize Robert's Cycle Shop, and this will "put your money where your mouth is". Today I had two bikes serviced there, my second visit to the shop. I had emailed a couple days ago without response, so I called today to follow up. I had what I would call a gruff, short conversation, in which I felt like I was a bit of a problem, but owing to my good experience there last time, I went anyway, needing the service done without delay. At the shop I understood the gruffness on the phone, which deserves explanation. I'm over 50 years old, and this shop is what I remember from bike shops in the 70s. A little dirty, crowded, a small business that is struggling to maintain itself in a world of shiny, corporate convenience and over-priced consumerism. These fellas are the "real deal". Maybe not the overly nice and squeaky-clean conversationalists you find in young, hip bike shops, but they are experienced, professional, and because I had let them know about my needs beforehand, they took care of my quick brake adjustments while I waited. (I did not expect this, and you shouldn't either-I was prepared to leave the bikes overnight, but doing this work right away served us both, as the shop is swamped with repairs, because in the pandemic, everyone is getting back on their bikes.) There was opportunity for a little conversation, which helped me understand the gruffness of the phone call. In the pandemic, if you want to be a community-minded Rogers Park biker, keep in mind the following: 1) Supply chain issues are not the fault of the bike shop. Things take forever to be shipped, if you can get them at all. You know this to be true, with things from other companies you've had shipped to your home. 2) Since bikes are so much more important now than before the coronavirus, you have to wait a little more. There is a backlog of repairs that they are doing their best to accommodate. Practice some patience, where do you have to get to so fast these days anyway? The days of rolling into the shop and getting out in a jiffy are gone. I lucked out on this one. 3) These gentlemen really care about what they do, and keeping you rolling on your properly-working bike. I saw a sign about a 50-day warranty on their work, which means they are invested in the quality of what they do. If you value people over convenience, and good, solid work over advertising promises, this is your shop. The way of the world is to crush these kinds of businesses. Great place to get a quick fix for bike! I had a crank arm I needed replaced on my road bike and the replacement was done in about 15 minutes. I was expecting to have to drop my bike off, but there are a few mechanics working in the shop to speed things up. I won't be returning to Roberts Cycle. I initially called inquiring in regards to a timeline for replacing flat tires with new tubes. I was told over the phone it would be same day or 1 day latest. I dropped my bike off the same day (Monday). At the store I was then told it wouldn't be ready until Thursday. I was given a ticket with pricing. I never received a call on Thursday. I called multiple times on Friday after being told "they couldn't find my bike and weren't sure if it would be finished". After following up several times; they changed their tune and said it would be ready by end of day. I picked up the bike on Friday afternoon and the man wearing suspenders changed the price from original ticket - upcharging the price! I was told $9 for bike tape on initial ticket and he changed the price to $16. My tires aren't even full either! Customer service is garbage! Man, I am a TOTAL n00b when it comes to biking. I'm from LA, and that shit don't fly there. But, here...ah one of the many reasons I have the hots for this town...anyways. My tiny needed a straight up overhaul on his 80's rode bike he found broken on the side of the road in Santa Barbara and shipped all the way here. We rolled (literally, he couldn't ride his bike) into Robert's and it clearly had been there for awhile (ask the owner about its story) and we were helped right away. I wish I remembered her name, but this super tuff chick helped us immediately and gave us this fantastic Bicycle Mechanics 101 lesson, hooking us up with free repairs and free advice. They did a ton of work, including a new tire and inner tube, and all kinds of other stuff for like $30. (See you know I'm a n00b when I can't even tell you what he had done). They also gave us some good bike routes to check out. The kicker, though, they have this totally bitchin ad from the 1980 Moscow Olympics hanging up that I'm in the works of stealing. I messaged Roberts Cycle on Yelp about an issue with my breaks and they messaged back right away. They told me about their free bike check-up and their special deal on bike tune-ups. I did a little research and their tune-up deal was comparable if not more reasonable that other places both near me and in Skokie. Since they are in my neighborhood I went over, dropped off my bike and they gave me an estimate. They got in touch with me exactly when they said they would, gave me a solid estimate and before I knew it they had texted me letting me know that the service for my bike had been completed. The owner, Richard, and his staff were super-friendly and extremely helpful. Aside from the final price being a little less than the estimate they also guaranteed all work for 60 days and said if I have any problem I should bring the bike back. These guys have been in business for years and I can tell why they are still around. They are honest and extremely helpful. read more

I came in today and had such a great experience. The back tire was stolen off of my friend's bike, and I decided to surprise him and get it fixed. At first they quoted me $160, and I was freaking out a bit because that is a lot more then I expected (I don't know a lot about bikes and apparently I had to buy so many different pieces for the back tire/wheel since it is a 7speed bike). They knew I was in a sticky situation (especially since the bike would just be used for leisurely activities like riding on the lakefront) so the associates must have talked to the owner, and he dropped the price down to $100. He was running around the shop finding used parts for me to make it work at that price! It was so nice of him, and that price was more reasonable to me and a little closer to what I had expected. In addition to price, they were very patient and understanding with me, and all of the associates were very knowledgeable and were more than willing to teach me more about bikes and the parts I was purchasing. Even though this place is a hole in the wall and the associates don't look like what you'd would expect walking into a bike shop, it is certainly a gem and a great place to go if you need a fixing. read more

I'm an unemployed soul whose 11 year old Trek in excellent condition was literally lifted out of a locked (and pretty invisible) backyard. While I've done what I can to get her back, I just got depressed all over again looking for a new one (Mom wants to chip in for it for my birthday...yay Mom!). Everything now is either too flowery, has a weird shape, or just costs a hell of a lot. And oh hey, my experience with the people in the big bike shops ranged from pissy when I didn't immediately glom on to their suggestions to condescending, to oblivious to the fact that I wanted to BUY something from them; i.e., put money in their pockets...during a RECESSION. Just got home from my last stop of today (the first was the Maxwell Street Market to see if I could be lucky enough to purchase the bike back from the criminals who took it). Robert's Cycle is waaaaay up on Clark, and yes, has bars in its windows to discourage aforementioned criminals. But it is an easy walk from the Red Line Morse stop -- west on Morse about five blocks to Clark, north on Clark two blocks. [And no Chads or Trixies to be seen.] This place made me feel like all the time cruising through multiple bike shops was worth it. Someone asked me within one minute if I needed any help, then proceeded to show me what they had that matched my criteria (trying to duplicate my old bike). They even had a few '08 models left, unlike any other store I went to, one of which I almost went with. The reason I went here was to look at Raleighs, which are not carried by that many area dealers, as far as I can tell. In Raleigh I found a nice compromise between my old bike and all the things I hate about most newer bikes (see above). They allowed me to take my two finalists out for a spin, and helped me adjust the seat, etc. beforehand. Everyone in the shop -- three people -- helped in some way with my purchase. And, though it was closing time, they were patient with a mother and two kids who needed air in their tires, but didn't make that easily understood. (They got their air.) Very kind and utterly unpretentious souls here. I rated them moderately priced. What I mean is that from glancing at prices this week, they are lower priced than the big bike stores (Village Cycle and Kozy's) and probably even lower than a lot of other small shops. But an "inexpensive" rating makes it sound like they are giving them away, which wouldn't make good business sense. And they had some good markdowns on prior year models (but there are not that many of those this time of year). The bike also comes with a complimentary 90 day tuneup and some other maintenance that I am not remembering right now. From what I saw, the other posters who liked these guys for repairs and maintenance are undoubtedly right on target...quite a few bikes in there waiting for owners to come back for them. All in all, I am so very pleased to have bought a bike I'm not just settling for, but really like -- from a mom and pop type operation that truly deserves the business.
