In response to the (mostly) positive reviews to this place, I trusted them to provide quality service. My rating is due to bike service issues, not personnel. The workers were what you'd expect as far as being nice - but the mechanics are amateur at best. After my first disappointment with their routine "maintenance service", I wanted to give them another shot with my brakes. After all, I yearn to have a good relationship with a local bike shop. And sadly, it's a bigger disappointment than my first visit. I asked for them to bleed both brakes. I received a call saying they're "fine" and suggested NOT bleeding brakes; but the pads and rotors were caked in oil and other residue (I cleaned them both 3 days ago). But I figured you gotta trust the pros, right? Wrong. I figured they'd replace the pads, clean the rotors and call it a day. After all, I hadn't sanded the pads this past time and they are getting old (10 months). Nope, just VERY poorly sanded the existing brake pads, cleaned the rotor below my normal standard and was charged nearly $50. For that. To sand 4 little brake pads and (presumably) apply some rubbing alcohol to the rotors. $50. Look at the picture of the brake pads after they serviced them. Lmao. I could have done that for $2 at home since all I need is a little more rough sand paper. Ha. And no, it didn't help my brakes at all. They produced very little friction, we're extremely loud and there was even a clicking noise from my drivetrain on my ride home I haven't even diagnosed yet. I just had to write this review. Ha. Should have just told them to screw off and bleed the damn brakes. To me, it's simple. This is a classic big city bike shop that is money hungry. $50 for that is LAUGHABLE. I could take this to my hometown bike shop and for that money they'd do a bleed, drivetrain clean, fork pressurization, frame clean, etc. And after all that, I still need my brakes bled. After waiting all summer to get my hands on a bike, JS had the one i wanted in stock! My friend referred me here as he had an excellent experience. They called me a day after I called them to check stock and said they just had received one! I appreciate that! Pick up experience was less than thrilling and my overall experience was alright. I understand bikes are sold out and one may be tired saying "sold out", but don't show your annoyance. Update: having my bike for a week i needed some adjustments. I took it in and it was quick, but quality of service is subpar. Corrected one issue with shifting and now other gears are shifting rough. I brought it back and now some gears don't shift at all or it's a long delay before it decides to shift so back for a third time I'll go. Third time's the charm at the Clark St A-ville location! Go to drop it off on said day and they then don't take it and say I need to drop it off in advance which they didn't say on the phone. I've dealt with Manny and he was nothing but accommodating the entire process. I have a slight disorder where I'm the most difficult high maintenance customer someone has to deal with. It's not bad it's just gotta be MY WAY. yes. I have issues. So when it came to working with Manny I don't think he knew what he was getting into. I purchased a fat bike from them and they made the entire process painless. I bought the bike unassembled. I then HAD to make it "mine." Once it was all repainted it went for assembly. These dudes killed it!! One of the best bicycle shop experiences I've ever had. Today I had to change the tires. Why? Because I NEEDED to have GREEN tires instead of the black ones that came stock. I stopped by today and Brent was beyond helpful. Literally took the bike as soon as I walked in and had it done in no time flat. These dudes are awesome. They know their stuff. I brought my trail bike in for repair after I blew the axel on my rear wheel. I knew that they couldn't fix it, but they looked to see if it could be saved. Ultimately, they determined that they needed to replace the wheel. They told me the cost of the new wheel and said that since I was a new customer, the cost of labor was cut in half. :0 I just picked it up after a couple of days and the bike is in great shape. I did not tell them that I was experiencing some shifting problems and that the brakes needed to be adjusted. But when I jumped on the bike the brakes were tight and the shifters had been calibrated so that my bike rides like new. I have ridden the crap out of this trail bike on rough and smooth track and it is great to have it function so smoothly. I highly recommend this place. They are bike junkies, and will treat you right at an incredibly reasonable price for the city. read more

If you come here to buy a bike, you should be fine. I bought my lilac specialized bike a year ago, and received great service. However, the tune up process is a hassle. 1. If you are a woman, bring your boyfriend, or any man, because if you have a concern, you will be rushed away and not taken seriously. 2. make sure to check your tune up before leaving the store 3. make your tune up appointment in person. do NOT do it over the phone. 4. write down names of the people who help you, and what you are told. Every single worker told me a different story about tune up policy, and how long it would take. When I finally got my bike back, the chain was not connected properly and the pedals would not move backwards. I brought it back immediately with my BF and the guy who helped us tried to say that it wasn't working because we changed the gear. My boyfriend had to literally stand over him and watch him fix it again. I cannot tell you if the bike was even tuned up or not. Never again. read more

Johnny Sprockets is my go to place when it comes to anything cycling related. Johnny Sprockets is a little further from my house but it is definitely worth the extra walking. I love the store layout and all of the workers that I have encountered have been extremely pleasant. I've visited Johnny Sprockets for a wide range of things like purchasing bike accessories to even getting the screws on my spinning spins tightened. I bought my Specialized performance road bike from them in 2014 and I love it. In 2016 or so, I found a large dent in the down tube of the aluminum frame after it sitting on a bike rack for a few hours. I tried to find out if there was anything I could do, and I found out through a completely different retailer that JS does crash repairs for a discounted rate if you purchased the bike through them. They offered to get a replacement frameset and sell it to me at a discount, but the frameset was no longer available. They did virtually nothing to help me resolve this and I had to keep pinging them via email and phone. I still have the dent. When I'm in the market for a new bike I'll go elsewhere and I won't shop at any JS location for anything. read more

Great bike store. Every time I walk in they are super nice and on occasion offer me a beer. When I walked in looking for a bike a few years back they were very attentive of my needs and wants. Knowing that I was a cash strapped post college buyer they were very supportive of my price point and tried to get me the best deal for my buck. A few weeks later I brought my friend who was a more seasoned cyclist to look at bikes. At the time there was a sale. Being that my my friend was a weird size they offered to order it at the sales price. A year after that my girlfriend was in the market for a bike, she was looking to get into cycling for fun but nothing competitive. I really appreciate these guys. I am buying my second bike from them in three years, it is an obsession, have made them my only bike shop. Since the first time I walked in they have been very friendly and have taken time to get to know me. My first bike I bought from them took me 6 months to make up my mind on what I wanted, it was a large investment. Plus I like to do a ton of research on what I want. These guys total spent time with me every time I walked in and just looked at tested bikes. They never got frustrated with me taking so long to buy something. It was more about getting to know my needs/wants and letting the bike sell itself. They have always guided me and not let me purchase an item that was not right for me or my bike. With that relationship I have never felt like purchase anything I did not need or want. While purchasing my first bike, I visited a ton of shops in the city. I was surprised at how many shops were willing to speak bad about other shops or brands. Johnny Sprockets not once did that, in fact they did the opposite. I always respected that. I hope others find this review helpful and that you definitely give Johnny Sprockets a look if you are buying a new bike. Further their mechanics do awesome work and other then myself are the only people I would let touch my bike. This was my go-to bike shop for years. They have a great inventory of bikes and gear. I regularly bought new bike gear here and had all my tune ups done here, but I gotta say....very disappointed with my last experience. Maybe they were just busy and cut some corners with my bike, but I paid over $165 for a tune up + parts, and was given what I considered "half of a tune up." I was told they didn't have the right tools to cut down my new seatpost so I left with a bike that was too big and too tall for me to even put my feet on the ground. There weren't any other options given to me. I was also told that they couldn't fix one of my gear shifts. I ended up getting my bike re-tuned up at a different location where they easily cut my seatpost, fixed my gear shift AND told me that the wrong tire tube (a mountain bike tube) had been put in my hybrid tire--an extremely elementary and dangerous mistake. I won't be coming back to Johnny Sprockets due to the high prices that just don't match up with the quality of service you get. read more

Rude, Surly Staff, and too $$... As a lakeview resident since 1999 I have been to Johnny Sprockets many times. I've found over the past few years though that the only reason I visit them anymore was due to proximity/location. They have a staff member (Female) who is surly, rude, and just plain unpleasant. Why would I want to give my money to be treated this way? Their prices are no longer competitive and while I have no issues with their work, I do take issues with their excessively high prices for routine items. I feel like every time I go to this place, I get wildly different results depending on who is working there. Ultimately though, today they lost my trust. To be fair, I still think they're a good bike shop, especially if you're in the market for a new ride, but my experiences with their mechanics hasn't been as pleasant. In May they changed out my cassette after I had replaced my chain myself and was still experiencing some issues with the drive train. They seemed reasonably sure that my cassette was the problem, and they quickly squeezed me in and got me back on the road again. Overall, I was pretty pleased, but it wasn't long before I was once again having issues changing gears. Fast forward to August, and the gear changing issue has gone from an occasional problem to a daily quirk. Decided to bring it in, and they suggested a cable replacement. Opted to just go ahead and get a tuneup as well, but it'd take an extra day to get me in. No biggie, come in the next day, drop off my bike, and then they recommend changing a brake cable as well, alright again, no biggie. Then today, while working on my bike they recommend that I replace the cassette and chain *again* despite only having about 600 miles on the pair. They also recommended replacing the rear wheel on top of that. Now, it's totally possible that this is all true, but they did a really poor job of explaining why, outside of just saying they need to be replaced. Trusting a bike mechanic, just like a car mechanic, is tough, because they carry a lot more knowledge about the objects they maintain than the rest of us do, so you're never quite sure when you're getting taken advantage of. They could totally be in the right, and I'll never know, but me not knowing I see as a failure on their part. They could do more to explain *why* these things need to be replaced, and what I can do to avoid such problems in the future. Tonight when picking up my bike, they couldn't offer me much more as a reason other than "because", which heck, maybe that's all that can be offered up. If it was something I did, or something I've been neglecting, I'd love to know that though. Personally, I feel like with any sort of maintenance that is anything but routine, that I should leave that experience a wee bit smarter, but I can't say that's the case. All I can say now is that sometimes, in any amount of mileage, a chain and cassette can go bad and it's nobody's fault and maybe nothing caused it. So, in closing, having to replace parts they just replaced 3 months ago bugs me, but it's not the reason I'm upset. I'm upset that they seem so uninterested in explaining to me why they're having to redo work they just did. If I wouldn't have asked the guy ringing me up tonight, I don't think he would have even discussed it with me. In this case, I felt like they just wanted me to pay and get out of their store. (Note: I don't think the employees of this shop are being malicious necessarily by trying to rack up extra charges, but there is a lack of customer service/care.) read more

I only have experience with the service department, and it is top notch. You don't get any of the "I'm a pretentious biker, and you suck if you are asking questions" attitude that you get at other places. During the summer when it is super busy, you have to call ahead to get an appointment, but in the early spring or late summer you can get in right away. Once you're in, the turnaround is quick and the prices are reasonable. For minor things like flat fixes, they will usually do right away. Also, there is a free air hose outside that anyone can use- way to support the community. read more

I'm not sure what happened to this place. I've lived nearby for years and used to feel welcome and really liked the owners who always said were super friendly and just added a very "neighborhoody" feel. I'm not sure if they still own the place bc I haven't seen them around in awhile. As I get more into cycling, I have had an increase need to visit the store. The service is okay, very perfunctory, but has definitely started to have that elitist bike shop feel instead of the friendly neighborhood shop I used to love. And I've seen some almost rude treatment of other customers while in there. I was motivated to write this review as I was a little annoyed about my experience there yesterday. I took the wheel in suspecting that the spokes might be getting through and they instantly tried to sell me a new tire without looking at the rim. Then when they put the new tire on, said that liner needed replacing (like I thought). I should have insisted they look at the tire first. Plus, they just charged me for a flat tire change (which I can easily do myself) when they put on a new tire for me. Wouldn't you need to deflate the tube anyway to put on a new tire. I understand charging me for the tube, but a flat change? Just makes me disappointed bc I want to support my local bike shop, but have lost the motivation to spend my money here. read more

I got another flat biking on the Lakefront Trail on my way to work this afternoon. That's my second flat on the same wheel in three days. I just picked my bike up at Uptown Bikes yesterday. GEEEEEZ. I was in walking distance (sort of) of Johnny Sprockets when I got the flat. So, I walked the bike underneath the Outer Drive at Diversey Harbor, then walked it over there to Sprockets on Broadway, and they fixed it for me in under 15 minutes. While I waited the really nice, knowledgeable woman who took my bike upstairs to the shop, came down and volunteered that my tires, while in fine shape, are not so puncture-proof. She showed me a highly puncture-proof tire, explained the difference, and suggested I ride a bit more and see if I have any more trouble, or whether it was just bad odds conspiring against me. She was not hard sell at all; just totally helpful. I was on my way back to work within 30 minutes of getting the flat and getting it fixed. Not bad. The little tire lesson I got was more than worth the $14 bucks to fix the flat. One nit (still worth the $14 bucks): they left the valve cap off!! read more

I went here recently to have my seat fixed and they claimed to fix it but it is still broken. I appreciate the effort but if it's broken just tell me that and I'd rather have to fork over $$$ for a new seat then have the false hopes that its fixed and ride home with a broken seat. I lived down the street from Johnny Sprockets for nearly five years, and went to them many times for parts, accessories, tune ups, new chains... every time the staff was friendly and professional, and got what I need done as quickly and effectively as one could ask for. They did a phenomenal tuneup on my bike last fall, which had it riding as good as when I bought the bike. Unfortunately, winter set in and kicked the crap out of it again. But then a chain change by their mechanics, and it's back to nearly as good a shape as before the winter :) read more

I love this store for two reasons. 1. They're the only bike store that I know of in Chicago to carry Chrome for girls (most just carry the dude clothes which are way too big for most gals I know). 2. They will tell you exactly why you want a product, or why you don't. They're very knowledgeable and carry a good selection of high-end bike stuff. I have just arrived home on my new Long Haul Trucker bought from Newt at this Johnny Sprockets location. I've been looking for a new bike all spring, and don't know why I didn't go to this store sooner (I'm pretty sure that I went to every single bike shop in the Chicagoland area except here and Boulevard Bikes). I had a check list that I wanted to adhere to with my new purchase: 1. American made or at least an American based company. (I would love a hand built US bike, but my budget just wasn't that high). 2. Family owned bike shop. 3. Didn't want to "order it in". I wanted to ride the bike I was about to purchase. 4. The person selling it to me could not be what I like to call a "shitfonzie" aka hipster, aka look like a character from Breaking Away. Fuck those guys and their shitty attitudes - you will all rot in skinny little biker boy hell. But I digress... Based on these four items, I found my place - Johnny Sprockets in Lakeview. Newt had to of been the most calm, knowledgeable, helpful person out of every store I went to. At one point, when I asked a question that was beyond his scope on this particular model, he didn't hesitate to ask someone else in the store (who ended up giving me tons of helpful information as well). Every other store I would get lame answers and just didn't feel confident with my purchase there. The store itself is very nice and has a huge selection (pretty much every size of every bike I was looking for, which was oh so helpful when taking them for a spin). I also get 15% off all my accessories (when I decide what I want) which is very cool , and also two free tune ups. Along w/ this comes a lifetime warranty on the frame and a year on the bike - I don't know if this is Surly's policy or JS's, but I like it either way. When I went to ride the first bike, what struck me instantly is how they took the damn tag off before I went out the door. They have a system where the tags come on and off the bikes quickly, and I can't tell you how much I love this! I hate nothing more than one, two or three tags blowing around while trying to take a test ride. Once again a very simple idea, but I loved it. I have yet to see what accessories they can offer me, but I'm confident they'll have what I'm looking for. If I feel as though 4 stars come into play after my first tune up, etc I'll be sure to update my review. read more

"Thank you for protecting my precious bike from those that would spirit her away from me," I said to the lock as I slid it into my r.e.load fanny pack, "and thank you to the staff at Johnny Sprockets for making such astute and informed recommendations. I recently moved from Chicago to NYC, and took my road bike to this shop to have it disassembled and boxed up for the move. I wasn't able to get them the bike until closing time on the day before the truck came to pick up all my stuff, but they were very friendly and agreed to have it ready by the next morning, which they did (even earlier than promised). When I picked up my bike from the shop in NYC that reassembled it, they felt compelled to tell me that Johnny Sprockets had done a great job boxing it up, and had been "very thoughtful" in the way they packaged it. Bottom line: They helped me out in a pinch during a stressful time, were very friendly and accommodating, and did a quality job for which I am thankful. read more

I came in here last summer when I was in the market for a new road bike. I had narrowed my search down to two brands, both of which were carried by Johnny Sprockets. I walked into the store on a rainy weekday and explained what I was looking for and what my price range was. Not once did I ever feel pressured to spend more than my budget and the two bikes I test rode were within what I could afford. The salesperson working with me even encouraged me to buy the cheaper bike after I said it felt more comfortable than the more expensive, tricked out bike. I also liked that they let me take both bikes out for multiple, longer rides. I tend to ride 20+ miles in a single bike trip so a spin around the block wasn't going to be quite enough to give me a good feel for the bike. Fast forward to last week when I was at Johnny's ogling bikes with my fiancee. I mentioned that I bought my bike there last year and asked if I could still bring it in for a free tune up (within the first year of your bike purchase you are entitled to 2 free tune-ups- normally $75 each!) as my brakes were a little off. They said sure, even though more than a year had gone by since I bought it, and they fixed the brakes and trued the wheels the next day- free of charge. The guys that work here are extremely knowledgeable about all types of bikes and are a great resource for figuring out the best bike for you. They don't make you feel like an a-hole if you don't want to spend out of your price range or don't wear skinny jeans. I never felt like I was being looked down upon by the hipster or spandex mafia in this joint, I wish I could say the same thing of some of the other local bike shops. read more

This is one of my two favorite places in Chicago to get my bike serviced (the other being Village Cycle). The folks at Johnny Sprockets are friendly, they do a good job, and they don't charge an arm and a leg. I appreciate that. Here's a little story that illustrates why I like this place so much. This would have been sometime around the middle of September. I had to get a new chain and rear cassette for my bike. I initially took it to Johnny Sprocket's, but the part I needed wasn't going to be in until the next day. I got a quote from them for the parts and labor ($55), which seemed perfectly reasonable, and I headed home. On the way home, out of curiosity, I stopped by Kozy's on Halsted, and I asked them for a quote for the same repair. They were willing to do the repair and they had the part. "How much?" I asked. "Oh," the repair guy said, "probably around $110-$120." 'Okay, thanks," said I leaving the store. I went back to Johnny Sprocket's the next day, told them I needed the repair done in a really short amount of time hoping they could accommodate my wacky schedule, and they said, "Sure, come back in half an hour and it'll be ready." It didn't even take them that long; they called me 25 minutes later letting me know the bike was ready. And they charged me the reasonable amount they had quoted me the day before (less than HALF of what Kozy's asked). THAT'S the kind of high-end customer service I've come to expect from Johnny Sprockets. I used to live just a few blocks away from the Broadway store, so that's where I had all of my repairs done, and they were ALWAYS really nice that way. I have no qualms whatsoever about giving this place 5 stars. They've always really come through for me, even when I'm in a bit of a time crunch or when I need something a little out of the ordinary. read more

I got my bike here about a year ago. I walked in and told them that I needed something cheap and decent. They were super helpful even though I wasn't going to spend tons of money on my new bike. I also got to test ride my new bike around the block. I brought my bike in earlier this summer for the free-within-one-year tune up and to buy a new seat and post (some a-hole stole mine). I wanted to have my seat put on permanently, because I am lazy and don't want to carry it all over the place when my bike is outside. They convinced me to get this super special lock that makes my quick-release seat and wheels not so quick to release. This contraption is kind of a pain in the bum, but no one has been able to steal my bike seat this year. Overall, this place has great service. Not as pretentious as many of the other bike shops I've been to. read more

Mixed experience here. I had some service work done on a brake line and it was affordable, but took a while. The price was good, but it's no better or worse than any other bike shop. Second experience was not as pleasant. I went it for a flat fix on a slow leak which at other shops usually takes 15 minutes, but was told it would take 45. That is a little long, but once you are at a shop you don't really have a choice. So I do a little shopping in the area, come back and instead of being $15 it's $45 or exactly triple the quoted price. I was told that the tire was full of glass and that he tried putting two tubes in, but each went flat. I have no way of confirming this after the fact. They have a free pressurized air hose outside for free. Other stores (that shall remain nameless have pumps you can us. Wow, if I wanted to pump it myself I'd do it at home. I'm lazy AND want to exercise! They are always a nice staff and the only guys I trust to put my kid seat on the bike. read more

What a bunch of nice people !! I have been going in a few times lately due to several flat tires which turned out to be caused by different things. Last night I left work and had a flat and it was almost 6pm. They close at 7pm. I had to walk 2.5 miles to get there and made it just before 7. They stayed late to fix the flat and also to adjust my front tire and front brakes and then charged me a very low price for the whole experience. They had also stayed late once before for me when I barely got there by 7pm I want to preface that I did not ask them to stay late to fix it on the spot. I was willing to pick my bike up the next day. They offered and that means a lot to me. There are closer bike shops to where I work, but I'd rather take it to Johnny Sprockets. read more

I'm pretty sure it's my fault that I look like a girl and, usually, I'm okay with that. In addition, I like light bikes that don't make me want to cry carrying them up and down stairs and, yes, an extra two pounds when I'm NOT riding makes a difference to me. I've grown accustomed to being someone who actually spends money on bikes and gets treated like a neophyte for wanting bike parts for all the wrong reasons... then I went to Johnny Sprockets. This is a lovely little store, nowhere near my neighborhood, that has changed my mind about conducting all my bike purchases on the internet. They have a huge selection (LeMond, Specialized, Jamis, Surly, and other utter happiness) and don't mind that sometimes I like to go in just to touch all the pretties. Test rides and informed purchasing is encouraged. They also carry shoes and clothes and saddlebags and other toys in addition to the standard lights and locks fare. Like any neighborhood shop, this isn't The Gap and they may give you an estimate that is a few dollars off or need some time to look around for your ticket. If you don't like that, Kmart sells bikes with bar codes and and pre-printed price tags. Honestly, even if I wasn't that impressed with their toys and trinkets, I would patronize them just because of their staff. Not to name drop but, if bike shops make ya nervous, talk to Brittany. Her bike smarts and super-nice-helpful-I'll-apologize-even-if-it's-not-really-anyone's-fault-and-remember-you-from-the-vague-interaction-we-had-three-months-ago customer service puts other bike shops to shame. This is the best bike shop I've found in Chicago! I brought my bike in to get some air in the tires and learn how to fix a flat tire (just in case). Sam offered me a free lesson on how to fix a flat tire. He was so knowledgable, helpful and patient as I tried it myself. I ended up getting new tires and left a very happy customer. I scheduled a follow up appointment to get a new chain as well! read more
