I put a down payment of $150 on a bike and was told by the red head guy we dealt with that they would hold the bike indefinitely since we couldn't take it home right then. Thats was his exact word, "indefinitely". My husband received a call from the bike shop 3 weeks ago and told the bike shop we would pick up the bike within a month. We went to pick up the bike today and was told the bike is no longer there. I understand it took us a long time to actually pick up the bike, it was due to my health issues. But the same person who told us the bike is no longer there is the same person who told us we could leave it there indefinitely when we put the deposit down. And today he was spiteful and pissy about it. He didn't acknowledge it was him that said they would hold the bike. I'm not upset they no longer have the bike because i know it was a year but he was dismissive and rude and there was no need for it especially since we would've considered purchasing another bike. I love my neighborhood bike shop! Every time I stop in the staff are excellent. They have ordered a specialty item they didn't have in stock and called me when it came in, they repaired a bike at a very reasonable price/time frame (an encounter with a plastic bag did a crazy amount of damage), and are always accommodating when I stop in to buy a piece of gear. With covid and bike parts shipping slowly Blue City Cycles has always been up front and communicates well when things are expected to be in. Happy to be a customer here! read more

I bought a new tricycle I'm very disabled. First they promised me would be ready in a few days. Turns out it wasn't turns out it was a couple weeks even though it's already built. I asked them to fix a master link on the chain, im VERY SPEECH IMPAIRED. They realize this and I need to text as I have lots of pain when I speak this place discriminates because they stopped answering on the text when I asked if they fix the one thing I bought to their attention . They refused to answer which is DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION!!!! Go to irvs for much better service. They don't work on trikes. The said this place does, so i went. I'm sorry but I cannot and will not recommend this place to anybody. I brought my bike in on a Saturday afternoon and was told I need all these repairs and new parts to my bike like a new star and chain and tires. They even tried selling me the most expensive lock they had. I originally believed them because I don't know much about bike repairs. I was told it would take 5 days to finish the job. On the 5th day I called to check up on my bike and was advised it's going to take another 2 weeks to repair. I was not comfortable waiting that long so I took my back and found another bike repair shop in Pilson and they fixed my bike in 1 day and I was told my bike was fine and no need for any new parts other than a new break line. My bike just needed a tuneup. My bill went from almost $300 to just $90. I'm so happy I took my business elsewhere. Also my bike rides perfect. Shame on you Blue City Cycles. I wanted to support the local bike shop but not if you're going to scam innocent naïve customers. read more

I had to replace a tube in my back tire and do a quick seat adjustment on my Giant bike, and these guys took care of me in less than 10 minutes. Everyone in the shop was super friendly, and they acknowledged me right away. A new tube and labor for my rear 25 was $16. Great service! read more

For a new rider, I don't know how to change my flat... My BF searched this place up since it is also nearby. We had an inner tube replacement for two tires so the bill rounded to $30. It took about 10-15 minutes for both bikes to be fixed. I'm not sure if this place will be friendly to people with allergies. There are two store cats. If you're a biker in the city, you need a home base bike shop. I don't bike too often so I always need to repair my bike when the winter ends. This is my go to place in Bridgeport. Everyone I've interacted with has been delightful, they're reasonably priced, and never taken long for simple repairs/maintenance. Also last time I went they had a cat, so take that however you want. Their location on Halsted is prime, right around the corner from damn good coffee and in a building with beautiful historic tile floors and copper ceilings, fun to imagine all the living those walls must have held. When I first noticed that the art shop in this spot closed, I kept my fingers crossed that something useful would open up here, I was thrilled when I noticed it was a bike shop. My poor bike was out of order for dammed near a full season last year, and with no bike shop within a reasonable distance from house it was just left to sit in our pantry. I have heard way too many horror stores about the bike racks on buses to risk putting my baby on one. Now this little shop opens up about four blocks from where I live? Of course I'm going to check it out. First thing walking in I see that they have an awesome selection even though they are in a small space. Second thing, the lady that was there was super friendly and helpful. The first thing I said was "Do you fix broken bikes?" She said "We sure do, Is that bike broken?" She took a very quick, very through look at it, Within view, which was awesome because I could see exactly what was happening to it. A lot places take it away and so stuff in the back and you don't even know if they are even looking at the problem! She told me exactly what was wrong with and my options to fix it, One of which was just to find another gear and see if that solves things. Which it did. I also was not charged for air and for a look-see. Which a lot shops do. I also saw the pricing list for repairs, very reasonable indeed! I am so glad they are here, Bridgeport needs this place! Atmosphere is laid back, honest, and approachable and by the time you've made your purchase you'll wanna take at least one owner out for a beer. Why? Everyone behind the counter is patient and straightforward. The prices are fair and there's not a question Clare, Charlie or Owen can't answer. I respect that there's nothing pretentious about the place and that they'll get you exactly what you need after you put them through some hellaciously long description of what you think you want. I've purchased one bike from the place and multiple accessories to date. There are shop cats. I trust a shop with shop cats. This is my local bike shop, even tho local for me is 20 miles away. It's everything a local bike shop should be: fast, often on the spot repair for those easy fixes, knowledgable (like, framebuilder knowledgable) mechanics for harder stuff, super fair prices... and honestly, they talk me out of buying crap I really don't need (and will gently, kindly, convince me of it - 5 stars for honesty). It's not a very big storefront, but they manage to carry a small line of new bikes, usually have some used bikes too. I've bought both here. They offer classes if you want to learn more about bike repair for yourself. They have a lot of hip stuff and a lot of practical stuff, from PDW racks to Seagull bags to VO vintage goodness to Brooks to lights to locks to grips to pedals to tires to tools to etc. I've gotten a little bit of everything here. My favorite ride is 100% Blue City. If you're browsing online and see something you like, drop Blue City a line and they'll order if for you. They're great with special orders. Stop in and hang out for a bit, it's a great place to soak up bike culture. All sorts of people walk through the doors, from messengers to neighborhood regulars. Everyone is treated fairly - something I appreciate, as I don't always know as much about bikes as I wish I did. They've never made me feel like an idiot... that's saying a lot for a bike shop these days. They offer Active Trans discount. They support the bike community and are super generous with their time. I haven't had a lot of experience in bike shops. I did try to buy a bike in the middle of the summer and encountered some bad customer service at other shops. Didn't feel that way about BCC and I've been in a few times. Pros: -Both owners were patient in showing me bikes on 2 separate occasions. They even were honest enough to say that Working Bikes might suit my needs better (I didn't want to spend a lot). -Had a flat repaired and my wheel trued for a decent price (about on par with Rapid Transit which is also close by, I think wheel truing was $5 cheaper at BCC, but like an auto mechanics, you're really at their mercy). -Bought fenders here and had it installed pretty quickly. Cons: I did buy a used bike that I loved there. I also gave them a used bike I came in with, but didn't get a discount on the bike I purchased. Later, I found out this is common practice. The second time I went in to shop, the owner even mentioned not having a lot of used bikes at the time because people usually turn them in for a discount on a new bike. Although if it was my shop and a customer didn't ask for a discount, I wouldn't have just freely offered up that information either. Bottom line: Definitely come in for repairs, they're at a fair price and get quickly done. For bike shopping, do your homework so you make an informed purchase! read more

This place has an amazing, friendly, extremely talented staff that is very efficient, and even nice enough show you how to better take care of your ride if you have the time to learn a few things. A single speed bike I purchased off of craigslist had an extremely creaky crank and a few other goofy things going on with it--probably as a result of some modding gone wrong. I took the bike in and after 5-10 minutes it was given a quick diagnosis (bottom bracket issues) along with an estimate. The estimate was spot-on and I picked the bike up after leaving work. I read a lot of the reviews before I came here and decided to give Blue City Cycles a try as I was in the market for a bike. This was going to be my first bike since I was about 10 years old, so I had a lot of questions. Molly, one of the bike experts there, was EXTREMELY patient with me. She answered all my questions, even the really dumb ones. She made sure I had everything I wanted for the bike, without being "sales-y." She suggested that I test try a few bikes in order to decide what I wanted. VERY HELPFUL. I was also helped by someone else (didn't get her name) the next day when I came back to actually buy the bike, and she was also very helpful. I left feeling very happy with my purchase. I will have a year of free labor, and that, for someone who doesn't know that much about bikes yet, is a BIG deal! read more

I've had good experiences with Blue City but a while back I asked my husband to drop my bike off to have a specific issue looked at. In addition to what I asked for the person who served him told him my bike needed a whole slew of expensive repairs, totaling more than the original cost I paid for the (used and in decent condition) bike. When I went to pick it up I asked about this and was told they were suggestions. The person I spoke with was understanding when I explained my needs and budget but still seemed to be pushing hard for more on the bike. This encounter changed my thoughts on the shop and made me feel like they were trying to hard upsell my husband for additional business and like they are less sensitive to the needs of the regular bike owner. read more

The guys are here to fix your bike problem and assess your bike needs. I needed a rear bike rack. A guy showed me my options and offered to install it for me. They were closing in 25 minutes and didn't mind installing it right before closing. Tried to upsell me on some Chrome bags but then realized I wasn't in the market for that so talked to me about bungee cords. I like supporting local businesses so will come back. Blue City has been my go-to bike shop since it opened some years ago. Owen is a bike god, and the rest of the people there are super friendly, knowledgeable, and downright cool. I just got got a custom build from the shop a few weeks ago, and it's completely flawless. Some years ago, I bought a bike form Cozy's, and most components ended up coming loose after a few dozen miles. I've yet to have any issues after any repairs or builds bluecity has done for me. My hope is that blue city remains a neighborhood fixture, and that their business continues to be successful. Also, they have cats if that is something that you're into. read more

So, when you buy a bike or bike accessories from a bike shop rather than a department store or an individual you might pay a little more. But by the time you factor in all the extras that come with it, I honestly think it is worth it. While waiting in the shop for an adjustment a guy came in who was about to spend $70 on a couple parts and labor on a $100 bike. The folks at Blue City were honest with him and told him he would be better off buying another $100 bike at Target. As I was making my decisions they were straightforward with me about what I would or would not like, and what would be safe and smart to add. I have been taking my old beach cruiser there for years for the (frequent) tire repairs expected when one lives in Chicago, and know I will be able to trust this crew with the new bike. My only complaint is that Iggy refuses to play with my dog, but then most cats do. read more

I was so excited to hear that a bike shop had moved in to Bridgeport. After visiting the shop a couple times I have not been disappointed. The first thing I noticed when walking in was the openness of the shop. You walk in the door and there is a group of new bikes available for sale and on the other wall is various bike parts and accessories. With an open mechanic area behind the counter. There are no walls between the sales floor and shop which allows for you to catch a glimpse at how the 'pros' do bike repair. The in store selection might not be as extensive as some of the larger north side stores but they have a great mix of common parts and accessories. If by chance you need a part that they don't have in store they will be happy to order it for you. Another factor of a good bike shop is quality mechanic work and the Blue City crew has this locked down. I went in there to get a new set of brake levers installed on my trusty steed. Not only did they do a great job but they also were quick to install them. What really helps set this bike shop above the others in my mind is its great charm. When you walk up to the counter you notice a chalk board listing the flat rates for most mechanic work and part installs. This helps make sure you don't get any surprises when the service bill comes. The whole crew at Blue City is extremely helpful with any questions. Also keep an eye out and try to catch a glimpse of their shop cat protecting the store. read more

I went to Blue City Cycles to try out a new bike shop near enough to where I live. Owen, one of the owners, was very helpful in helping me pick out a rack to go over my back wheel. After that, I asked if I could put it on in the shop, and not only did he say yes, but he quickly provided me with the tools I needed to perform the operation. After about fifteen minutes of feeling slightly inept and painting my fingers black, he came over to check on me after the store cleared out of customers a bit. Apparently, I had done well, but the anatomy of my bike wasn't working with the screw the manufacturer of the rack provided. Owen promptly found a screw that was more compatible and gave it to me with advice on how to put it on. Yeah, these guys are great. read more
