About a month ago, I brought my dad's bike in for one simple reason: to fix the brakes for his birthday. Instead, when I came back, they told me they repaired a crank that they claimed was "bent and unrepairable" -- something I never asked them to diagnose or fix. You shouldn't perform extra work and charge a customer for it without approval, especially when it wasn't the reason the bike was brought in. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I came back to address this, Dusty (one of the mechanics) was very reasonable and genuinely helpful. He understood the situation, and worked with me to reduce the bill from $140 to $40, which I appreciated.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Honestly, if the bike actually needed that repair, I can live with the charge. The real issue was the attitude and handling of the situation by the owner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I waited about 20 minutes for the owner to come speak with me, even though I had to be at work and had to ask Dusty to grab him again.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]When he finally came out, he was dismissive and rude, repeatedly fixating on the $40 price instead of addressing the real problem -- that the wrong repair was done in the first place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Even after calmly explaining that I wasn't blaming him and simply wanted some accountability, he kept responding with, "I wouldn't have done this for $40," completely missing the point.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When I politely asked if there was anything he could do to make it right after a month of inconvenience, he flatly said no. This could have been handled professionally and respectfully, but instead it turned into an unnecessarily uncomfortable interaction. My husband and I both have had issues with repairs from this shop, so I would not recommend it. It's unfortunate because I would love to support small local businesses, but in this case we've had better repairs at other shops in the area. I had a full tri bike clean and re-build (over $500), and the crank bolt loosens with every ride and my brake quick release won't close. They didn't tighten my saddle bolt and it shifted me off my bike mid-ride. My husband has taken flats here 4 TIMES in 2 months, and they keep busting due to improper tube installation. Took it to Trek and it hasn't given him a problem in a year. We would recommend you look elsewhere for repairs. I can't speak to their bike sales. read more

Just walked out with my first non-huffy (kid) bike! Wanting to get serious about fitness and enjoying the great outdoors, I trekked over to Deerfield Cyclery to get a REAL bike. The salesperson took the time to make sure I found a good bike that fit my needs. No question was too silly. He made sure the bike fit well and had me take it for a spin. He told me to take all the time I need. He could have suggested pricier bikes and taken more of my money but he was genuinely all about finding the bike that would be perfect for me. They even adjusted my new bike helmet for me. I've passed by this store a lot and always wondered what it looked inside. And now that I had a good reason to shop there I am glad I came by. My daughter was ready for a "big girl" bike with 20 inch wheels Unfortunately, most of the frames for 20 in bikes were too big for her. We found one brand that worked at another bike store, but she refused to buy it because it only came in "boy colors." God forbid we get a bike that I could actually pass down to her 2 little brothers. It was a busy Sunday for Deerfield Cyclery, but we were greeted with a very friendly smile from one of their newer sales associates, Henry, within minutes. I explained we were looking for 20" wheels with a smaller frame in girl colors. Henry pointed us in the direction of a bike he thought would work. He lowered the seat so far down that we actually had to remove the light reflector (no chance of her riding this bike at night anyway) and it was the perfect fit. It's blue with pink so I may even get away with painting the pink writing for her little brothers. We added a flower basket and confetti and then she "rode" her new two-wheeler out to the car (before heading to Menchies for a "we found a bike" ice cream celebration) They were so speedy and Henry could not have been more patient with us. In 2016 my wife bought me some very expensive Mavik/Cosmic wheels. Earlier in 2020 (during Pandemic) my rear Mavik/Cosmic wheel had a catastrophic failure. I contacted the owner, Greg to see what he or Mavik could do to warranty or guarantee. Add to the fact that at the time (June) Mavik was in bankruptcy/receivership. So, Greg said he would follow up, but keep my expectations very low. By September I had given up any hope of a remedy and I purchased a comparable wheel. To my surprise and delight I got a call from Greg in early November saying that he had kept following up with his Mavik rep and he told me they had found a 'demo' pair of exact replacement wheels that I could have. I brought my wife's bike to be built at the store and they did it in a timely manner. I asked if they rode the bike to make sure everything was working. They said they did...however, the brakes were insanely loud. Not sure how a bike mechanic misses this detail. Fast forward after trying to resolve the issue myself. I brought the bike back to get new rims installed, because it turns out that the original rims had a coating of paint which causes brakes to squeak. I again asked if they test rode it to make sure everything is how it should be, they again assured me that they did. My wife leaves the store and the rear tire is rubbing against the frame. Once again, I'm not sure how a bike mechanic misses this. They ended up addressing the issue before we left the store. I ended up asking how this was the case and the mechanic I spoke to said that it has gone through different hands. I'm not sure if I will be back. I can see that the store has a strong score on Yelp, my suggestion is to make sure everything seems right to you before you leave the store. DO NOT COME HERE FOR ANY LEVEL OF BIKE SERVICE. THEY ARE COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT. When I got started with cycling I came to this shop exclusively because they were local. Not knowing what good or even average bike service looks like. On July 10th, 2022 I got in to a bad crash that crushed my Rear Derailleur. I brought the bike in to the guys at Deerfield Cyclery to have it fixed in time for my next event which was July 30th, 2022. I was told I would have the bike back in a weeks time. Well two weeks had past and it was now race week. I called Monday "oh yea we should have it done by the end of the day, we'll call you". No Call. Call again Tuesday "oh our main mechanic isn't in today, so we won't be able to do anything for you" same thing Wednesday. Finally, on Thursday they tell me they're missing a part that wouldn't come in time. Ok, frustrating when we are on week 3 of a 1 week project, but not the end of the world. I called all over and found a shop that had the missing part. I brought the bike to them and within 30minutes of working on it, they discovered cracks in the carbon on both seat stays and chainstays. If DEERFIELD CYCLERY had any level of competence they would've told me on the spot, and I would've had enough time to get a replacement frame prior to my Half iron that I had been training all year for. Fast forward to September 21, I reluctantly bring my new bike to the shop due to the fact that I purchased life long bike fitting from the Owner Gregg. I needed this fit adjustment for my make up half iron on October 2(I told them this). I should point out that Gregg is the sole reason that I remained loyal to the shop. He is a genuine guy and if you're looking for a decent fit for a great deal that is the only reason I would step back into the shop. That being said, I had an appointment scheduled with him for the 26th which was the Monday before the race. He called me to cancel because he decided to leave a day early for his vacation, I had asked to reschedule for any day before he left which he would not do despite him being in the shop all week. Anyway, I needed a hanger adjustment and had a few screws that were deadlocked in my cockpit which made it so I couldn't adjust the aero bars for my fit. They told me on multiple times that they would have to dremel the screws out, but it would be ready to be picked up Friday night. Fast forward to today(Saturday morning) I get a call that they adjusted the hanger, but couldn't get the screws out. They then attempted to charge me for the full service. I protested and they let me leave with my bike. I took it 10min down the road to the Trek store in Highland park and they were able to unscrew it with a ratchet within seconds free of charge. Just another example of DEERFIELD CYCLERY's incompetence when it comes to Servicing bicycles. They have lost what had been a loyal customer who exclusively worked with them. Recently, I needed some help with a new bike. There are many bike shops in the area. Having used Deerfield Cyclery before, choosing them was an easy decision. I brought my bike into the shop and Greg, the owner, was extremely helpful, suggesting all of the right things, which tire size would be best, which seat to use and which other equipment would be best for a rider at my skill level. I left my bike at the shop and it was ready for pick up, even earlier than I was quoted. I was also pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the cost was. AVOID DEERFIELD CYCLERY!! They charged me a "discounted price" of $120 to assemble 2 tiny Big Wheel bikes for my 2 and 4 year old grandkids. The bikes weigh about 5-7 lbs each. A friend told me they didn't charge her to assemble a comparable bike but I assumed I wouldn't be charged more than $30 each. I questioned the cost when I picked them up and they essentially said take it or leave it. I should have asked for a quote beforehand but I mistakenly didn't. Lesson be learned. They don't value their customers, are short sighted and will gauge you. This is an awful operation and the worst customer service ever. No wonder retail is dying. read more

Greg and his crew are Awesome! I am new to Deerfield Cyclery. I have been riding in the North Shore area for years. I lost my previous shop, so I was in search for a new home. Not a pit stop, but one that I can develop a relationship with them for years to come. I feel that possibility with Deerfield Cyclery. The shops is clearly organized and set up in an efficient manner. The staff is friendly and attentive. They are very helpful. One thing I appreciate is that they aren't pushy..as we all have experienced at some point in time from one place or another. I detest that. No vibe of that here. Whew! There is plenty of parking in the back of the store. One thing is that they now offer options of classes indoors. Check it out on their website. Forgot to post my glowing review. Dropped off my commuter bike, sort of a hybrid between a mountain and road bike. Got a full tune up due to a miscommunication with the cashier. The owner didn't even hesitate to offered it up for what was quoted, which I thought was incredibly generous since that was basically giving away a free $100+ tune up. Split the difference with him since he was already backlogged and snuck my job in. Dropped off, quoted, fixed, picked up, rectified price inside of a day and a half. Perfect. DC represents a small-town, know-your-customer business style that seems to be going out of fashion these days, but when you experience it firsthand it's hard to see why. So I go and drop my bike off on a Thursday, about a week and a half ago. It is really a 10 minute job for someone who knows what they are doing (put new pedals (mine are cracked) and put the chain back on (mine broke). I mentioned that I think one of the gears is bent and the man at the repair stand said they all look fine to him and he'll just put on a new chain. I ask them how soon I can get it, they said Monday. So I call on the following Monday to see what their hours are and if the bike is ready. I tell them I'll pick it up in a week as I won't be able to make their hours. Fast forward to yesterday when I go pick up the bike. I pay and they hand me the bike. I am walking it out of the store when I notice that the pedals are still the same broken ones I came in with and the tires are not filled up. As I am returning the bike so they can do the service that I paid for, I found another issue. They did NOT put a chain on the bike. Thats right folks. I paid them money for a service, called to ensure the bike was ready for me to pick up, and when I pick it up they didn't do anything. Well they say it will take 10 minutes to do it all (as opposed to when I brought it in and they said it will take them 4 days (Thursday afternoon to Monday afternoon). Then the guy said he sees that the chail falls off at the lowest gear and needs to make an adjustment. For this he charges me an extra $10. 10 minutes later he said he cannot do this fix and that he can block that gear. I did not get my $10 back that he charged me to fix the fact that it falls off the gear. Next time I need service I'll have to think long and hard if I want to come here or not. The only reason this gets 2 stars is that I finally have a working bike again and once they did the work it seems like a good job. edit: I spelled some words wrong.... sorry folks read more

Since my childhood bike came from Northbrook Schwinn, I had initially stopped there a couple times to look at purchasing a bike, but was solidly extremely dissatisfied with the rigidness, coldness and lack of personalized care. Huge difference when I walked into Deerfield Cyclery. Greg from Deerfield Cyclery took the time to go through my options and I had a comfortable feeling that he cared about getting me the right bicycle and not just trying to make a sale. I absolutely LOVE the Trek bike I purchased from them, along with all the little gadgets. Recently I picked up a cool odometer, side mirror and bags - which they all installed quickly and at no charge. Deerfield Cyclery truly demonstrated to me their outstanding service a month after I purchased my new Trek bike and asked for a special request and rather than the typical response along the lines of "Too bad, so sad, that's how the bike comes" or "that will be an additional charge", Greg the owner said with caring positiveness, "I'll take care of it, no problem". I was stunned and so happy, and to this day I appreciate that favor. I've since been in the store several times, and every time, the service has always been genuinely warm and personal, where they care about doing what's best for you, and not just ringing up sales. Went to the store on June 21, I wanted to buy a kids bike. I called to check inventory and to make sure they had what I wanted to buy. The gentleman on the phone told me they had 3 girls pink Cannondale for $289. I've asked if they could put on training wheels since my daughter never been on a bike before. The gentleman told me no problem, we can take care of it. I went down to the store to see the bike in person, the bike was perfect! I asked the sale associate if they could put on the training wheels so that my daughter could ride the bike. The sales associate told me that they could not do it because they are busy. He told me that his manager told him not to put them on. I was confused since they do sell them and I also asked them before coming in. The sales associate told me he could ask the manager again to see if he would change his mind. The manager told him that they don't put on training wheels on bike because it would modify the bike. I told the associate that I called and I was told a different story, he says that his manager wanted me to pay before he would even put them on. The manager refused to help us buy a bike. Not a good way to run a business. I would not come back to this store or recommend this bike store. We took our business to the Trek Bicycle Store in Highland Park. The quality of sales associate is not even close. The employees at the Trek store are really nice and friendly. They seem to care about helping anyone out. read more
