After significant research into an issue I was having with my saddle, I went into Velosmith because according to the Selle Italia website they are a dealer participating in the idmatch (a "30 second" fitting procedure) and saddle test experience. The person I spoke with at the shop was friendly and helpful (although he was very quick to mention the $325 fitting that was a very important part of figuring out any type of saddle issue), but suggested that I contact their fitting expert to learn more about the demo program (same thing as the saddle test), so I left and contacted her by email. In that exchange the fitter was very nice, but pointed out immediately that the demo program is only for those who have gone through the $325 fitting experience. While I do believe there can be significant value in having a professional fitting. I just don't think I need one in this scenario because I've already run through most of the troubleshooting steps on my own to narrow down the potential causes (the Internet is a fabulous thing). I had really hoped that Velosmith would be that perfect boutique bike shop in a convenient location, and I would have been happy to pay more for that personalized expertise. But that wasn't the case. Instead of a premium experience, I was treated to a hard "mandatory" up sell (albeit in very friendly terms) for something I didn't want, or need.

It's like a used bookstore of sporting equipment, which feels very comfortable. Yesterday I stopped in looking for a free-standing pull-up bar, on a whim that they might have it, and lo and behold they had a Power Tower that was exactly what I needed. Mike was very can-do and cleared out a space for me to try it out, adjusting the height so it would work for me (I'm 6'7", hence the need for a pull-up higher than a door frame bar), and gave me plenty of space and no pressure to try it out. I bought it on the spot. I knew it probably wouldn't fit in my car and was only there for groceries at the Valli's supermarket in the same shopping center, and asked if I could could pick it up tomorrow (today) and Mike worked out when he'd have it disassembled by in time for me, and then offered to drop it off at my place at the end of the day for free (given I live relatively close in South Evanston), which was amazing and I took him up on it. This morning I woke up and couldn't get the idea of doing pull-ups at home out of my head, and stopped by at 10:30 am just after they opened, and Mike was not at all surprised to see me, was very ready to disassemble the item and try to load it into my car, and sure enough my car was too small. He then, unbelievably, offered to drive it over to my place on the spot. I was incredulous that he'd give me that kind of time during the business day. Besides this exceptional customer service experience (I hope I don't get Mike in trouble with customers asking for home delivery! ), they also have great selection and I've gotten a used skateboard there for my daughter and water bottles. When my daughter gets old enough to play sports, I'm sure I'll be back. And as I'm kitting out my home gym setup, this will be my first stop.

NOTE: I decided some time ago that Anywhere Else are my first, second, third... choices because the owner here at PAIS has *YELLED* at me three times for not pickup up an order that was not really a special order. He's absolutely crazy! He also *YELLED OBSCENITIES" at me for mentioning (as gently as I could) that he didn't cut my son's skates on-center, and "Could we find a way to guarantee a better cut?" But I digress... So I had to buy a piece of branded Evanston hockey gear, and only PIAS-Evanston carried it. All options of buying elsewhere were off the table. So I had no choice but to go into this establishment. I brought my son--thinking surely the owner would not yell at me in front of my son. Luckily the owner wasn't there. So I just introduced my son to the staff--who were tossing around a football (important job, I guess?). Staff Guy #1 said hi and turned to Staff Guy #2 and said "You help him." and then returned to doing nothing. Staff Guy #2 said to my son "There's a pile of those there; help yourself." After about 2-3 minutes of digging through a junky pile my son could not find the item in the size he was looking for, so I asked Guy #2 "Could you please help him?" Guy #2 said: "He should be perfectly capable." and returned to throwing a football to Guy #3. Long story. No help. My son dug and dug and dug amidst the junk and finally found one piece in the right size... no thanks to The PIAS-Evanston Team! So if you are expecting Customer Service here, you will be disappointed. Their excuse: "We're just in high school."

Others may have had better service, but believe the negative reviews they have received because they are true as well. I went here only out of convenience because I work nearby and the previous shop I went to was in Humboldt park. Rather than going far out of my way, I thought I'd give this place a try out of convenience. But suffice it to say the pretentious roadie vibes are very real here and I should've stuck with my old shop. I went in to get my tubeless tires changed. That was it. It turned into sooo much more. When I first went in, I had already previously purchased tires in the fall and didn't bother getting the service done until spring. The tech laughed at me for not bringing in the correct tires for the bike.... I explained, no they are correct, I am not stupid. He then laughed it off... oh you're right, they are just so freaking dusty I couldn't tell(they had been in my basement since winter) This then turned into inspecting my bike and telling me I was going to need new handle bars all of a sudden? A full inspection because "things weren't working", and then the ancillary fees associated" new bar tape, labor, etc.) I reluctantly agreed, which turned into a 2 month process with my bike. They called me saying I needed new forks but could only get the ones they had picked, they couldn't return it to me without doing that work. The back and forth went on for so long I eventually said let me pay you for the work you have done and give me my bike back. It turns out the only work they had done was disassembling my bike. Take the bearings out of the forks, taking the bar tape off. And giving it back in that condition without the tires being done when that was all I wanted in the first place. Then they charged me 40 bucks for their "work". Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. After asking around, there are better shops in Evanston. Save yourself the trouble you might encounter from these guys. Thanks but no thanks Pony.
