I'm not sure what all the positive reviews are about. Food ranged from mediocre to bad. Way too expensive for what you get. Never again.

I absolutely love Vegin Out! Their food is delicious and the fact that the food is vegan and has no oil (unless otherwise stated) is so incredible! There is a lot of variety in the menu each week and the quantity is just perfect! The price is good too, especially if you get their special deals. As I'm sitting here forcing myself to eat another Vegin Out meal so as not to throw out a hundred bucks, I felt compelled to write a review. Of course if you go to the site the reviews they post are glowing ones, why would they post otherwise. The reality is that the food is at best bland and at worst nauseating. I merrily complied at first and as the days wore one I could barely muster a nibble of the horrible blackened tofu and god awful barley mushroom "pilaf". The names for the dishes sounded delicious but I found them to be abritrary because the actual dishes didn't resemble their descriptions in the least. I started ordering from Vegin Out a month ago, so I've had 4 deliveries by now. I came across their service when I was browsing the net for a healthy and affordable meal delivery service. Why was I looking for such a service you ask? Well, this is how it came about. I like to think that I enjoy a relatively healthy life-style, but I'm by no means a "health nut", nor am I a vegan. I'm pretty active; I ride my bike 12 miles every day, do martial arts and hit the gym on a regular basis. I was also on a serious roll with cooking healthy meals at home with lots of veggies. But then... *blammo* knee injury! *healthy lifestyle screeches to a halt* I had to rest for 4 weeks, which meant no exercise whatsoever for me for 4 weeks. Argh! And being the all or nothing kinda gal that I am, if one healthy thing goes out the window... so will the rest. Cut to me eating pie, fries and all kinds of tasty, tasty unhealthy food for 4 weeks straight. So good... but so not good for me. Once I was ready to get back to working out, I felt like a complete slob. I was unable to motivate myself to cook healthy foods anymore. It just wasn't happening. I considered eating those so-called healthy frozen meals, like Lean Cuisine, but I know those contain way too much salt, sugar, and/or other bad things. That's why I started looking for a healthy meal delivery service, just to get me back on track. Most of the services were way too expensive for me, but with $117 for a week's worth of food, Vegin Out fit my budget. As I mentioned before, I'm not a vegan, or even a vegetarian, but I've always enjoyed eating vegan and vegetarian meals. I could easily live a vegetarian lifestyle (and I probably do without even thinking about it most days), but vegan is a little trickier, since I have no idea which food items are vegan half the time. The meals that Vegin Out provides are mostly quite tasty and they appear to be extremely healthy, so you can feel good about eating them. They use ingredients that I would never think to use, or know how to use. I eat their meals for lunch and dinner now. To make the food stretch far enough for 7 days (at 2 meals a day), I usually order one more entree with the order for an extra 13 dollars. With some good planning, this gets me through the week. I usually also order an extra bag of cookies, to satisfy my inner cookie monster. They are so tasty! I realize even vegan cookies are probably not super good for you, but hey, you gotta indulge sometimes, right? I usually freeze part of the food, to make sure it won't go bad towards the end of the week. I try to pick whatever I feel will be the easiest to defrost, and freeze that, then eat the things that I think could go bad first. That seems to be working very well. Overall I am very satisfied with Vegin Out. They send a little survey every week, in which you can give your opinion about the dishes. So they seem to have their finger on the pulse of out taste-buds. I like the variety as well. It's always exciting to see what they will be serving up next. I started with Vegin Out as a temporary solution, to get me back on track, but I think I might stick with it. It saves me so much time to not have to cook for myself and I feel like I am eating very healthy, nutritious meals, which makes me happy :) read more

My background: I have been vegan for several years and make my own vegan food as well as eat out a lot at different vegan restaurants. I was a first time vegin out customer as of last week. I read through reviews on their website and noticed that most of them were from famous and/or successful people that probably had a lot of money (to waste). I am not a millionaire, but I thought I would give this a shot. I read through reviews and thought the low rating were the outliers. So I sent the company an email and asked them about their shipping policies. They informed me that due to my location: Santa Clarita area, they would ship fedex and transit time would be over 24 hours in an insulated package. I was a bit concerned about it, but they insisted it would be OK. I decided to take their word for it. It turned out that they did a good job packing the food and I was at home to receive the package. I opened it up immediately and saw a lot of packing peanuts as well as an air sealed bag inside. Upon opening the bag, the air rushed out and I looked inside to see frozen gel packs with some small plastic food packages. Everything was still cold but there was barely any food inside! The first meal: Later that evening, I decided to try the a meal made of "ceaser greens", lasagna, potatoes and a cookie for dessert. The greens came with a type of hummus dressing, that I globbed over it. The first taste of the greens and salad, I was surprised that the taste wasn't very good. It wasn't "off" because of shipping; it was just made bad. The lasagna had a bit of red pepper that was the strongest smell, and upon eating it, was mostly tofu with pasta sheets. I didn't care for it much. The potatoes were actually good with some kind of onion/garlic pieces that were so burned, you couldn't really tell what they were. I didn't mind so much that they were burnt, because they did taste good. I heated up the peanut butter cookie for a few seconds in the microwave and it was soft and warm. I wouldn't say it was amazing, but it was good. The next meal: I decided to take the chow mein and potatoes in for lunch. I knew the potatoes were good, but hadn't tried the chow mein. I heated it up in a microwave and followed the instructions on the box except that it was heated on a plate, not in the plastic container (that is post consumer recycled plastic). The chow mein was pretty much mostly noodles with a few veggies and no sauce. It was sub par and not very tasty. I also had the soup that evening which turned out to be one of the worst dishes. I think they used dried peas without soaking them, because they were hard and I had to chew and crunch them with my teeth. There were also visible burnt pieces in the soup and a burnt flavor that was undeniable. It was very bland and gross, so I threw it out, much to my dismay ($$$). The final meal: The last meal was actually OK, but it wasn't just heat and eat. I sauteed some onions and spices first, then added the pesto dish into a saucepan and stirred it up. It turned out OK with the extra flavor but it wasn't worth the price. I could have bought something that I really wanted for the same price, and more of it from a vegan restaurant as takeout. I wonder if the chefs are even vegan at vegin out or really care about a vegan lifestyle. The chickpeas were completely horrible. Bulgar, was bitter and had no flavor, but then again, Im not sure if it is supposed to. I believe that was every dish which wasn't a whole lot. Overall: I like the concept and convenience of vegan food being delivered to my home, but for it to be worth it, it should be convenient (I shouldn't have to waste any time to re-engineer the food to make it edible), be something I like to eat (taste good), and give me value for money. Unfortunately, Vegin Out fell short on all accounts. I completed a survey they sent out informing them of my dissatisfaction. I haven't heard a peep back from them. I would not recommend them to another vegan or anyone else that wants to know what vegan food tastes like. ***EDIT*** Soon after this review, I was sent the following email body from Vegin Out: "Once again I apologize for your bad experience with Vegin' Out. We hope that our food appeals to everyone, but we understand that sometimes that is not the case. We would really appreciate it if you could amend your review on Yelp. I'm not asking you in any way to remove it or even change the rating, but if you could just mention that we were willing and did work with you to resolve the issue it would really help us out. We do understand that not everyone is happy with our product, but we try to give good customer service and keep everyone happy. It is a regular practice of ours to refund for certain items or add on others for free when customers are unhappy. Thank you for your time. Have a wonderful day." I've ordered once so far and was very happy with the flavor, amount, and variety. Two of us shared the package, which in total was about 12 meals worth though I did steam veggies as an add-on. What a difference it makes to have good and healthy meals ready in the fridge, and the cookies were an indulgent treat. read more

Vegin' Out is awesome! Friendly service and great food. What an amazing thing to have a week's worth of fresh VMRE's (vegan meals ready to eat!) waiting in the fridge. Really takes the pressure off as far as having to cook all the time. (Attn: Vegan newbies). If you're a label reader like I am, you can actually click on the individual dishes on their website and see the nutritional content. It helps to keep track of the menu cycle, so you can watch for your favorites. But they have a cycle of 12 menus or so, so you won't get a repeat too often. Soups and cookies are to die for. If the the bar-b-q lentil loaf was an opiode, I'd be in trouble. Also, they do need a place to drop the food in case you aren't home, so it's helpful to think of a convenient spot in advance of placing your first order to avoid last minute confusion. (The food is comes in an insulated bag with ice packs. Very cool, no pun intended.) Good people, great food. Nuff said. read more

Wow! i am so thrilled with this service. As you may notice, I don't cook (even though I know how and am pretty good, but anyway....) Since I became a vegetarian I get so bored with the usual stuff. I found this service and the food is FABULOUS and CREATIVE. I have been using them now for a couple of months, every week. The food shows up at my door, I pop it in the fridge and I am good for the whole week!!! I actually share it with my assistant who is not vegetarian and she adores it - especially the soups. Customer Services is personal, attentive and real. They are soooooo nice. I have set myself up on auto-order, so I pay a month at a time. I just finished my second week of Vegin' Out and I'm so happy I gave them a try! The food is really delicious and the portions are very generous, so overall there's a lot of bang for your buck. ($117 for a single delivery of 3 entrees, 4 sides, 1 soup and cookies). My boyfriend and I split the food, and it gives us dinner for two through Friday, with a lunch or two of leftovers thrown in . The tamale pie is excellent and I'm in LOVE with the cookies. I found the tufu curry to be a bit bland, but every other dish has been quite good. The service has been reliable and the customer service is friendly and efficient. I also like that Vegin' Out is not a membership service, so i don't have to worry about cancelling my weekly delivery or food going to waste if I'm out of town or something. I have been WFPBNO for over a year. In an ideal world I would batch cook, but between work and my family spread all over the world (thus a lot of travel), I do not have time to batch cook. With the first WFPBNO meal delivery service that I had tried I never ordered a second one. I did not like the packaging and the meals had no flavor. Then I found Vegin Out, and it has been such a relief. The meals are flavorful. The packaging is user friendly. It is also very easy to communicate with the owner. My partner is not vegan, so one shipment lasts for 2 weeks for me. I freeze most, leave out one main dish and one side dish - eat those for 2-3 days (everything is 3 servings except for the soup that is 4 - though I might have it in two meals). I am not picky about leftovers. I make my gigantic salad every day for another main dish, and have my own breakfast regime. I do not eat processed food, so I swap the cookies for another order of side dish. Vegin Out has fixed my anxiety about finding WFPBNO ready made dish. Delicious... Healthy... Ends up being about the same price as grabbing something at Astroburger on the way home. I'm sold. I was eating like crap (or not eating at all) because I've been so strapped for time and so unmotivated to cook. But now, I have healthy food at all times in the house and I feel great! Never have I been more impressed with a delivery service than I am with Vegin out. I recently moved into the LA area and noticed I've been eating a lot of not so healthy take out because of the craziness with the move-- in comes Vegin out. From the call to the delivery, the whole process was all so seamless. A sweet lady answered the phone & answered any questions/concerns I had with the menu. After putting in the order, the delivery arrived exactly before 12 pm the next day, as promised!! I only tried a couple dishes so far but the flavors are so good and complex, you do not even miss meat/seafood no matter how big of a carnivore you are. Will definitely order again. I wasn't too wild about the food, but that's not really my complaint - it's about the quantity. They claim it's 9-10 meals worth of food and some reviewer even said 15 meals. I'm a relatively modest eater. I would say for two adults, the quantity is about right for 3-4 meals. At that point, it seems pretty hard to justify the price in my opinion. read more

I tried 4 different meal delivery services during a two month stay in SF and this was my favourite. While I would have preferred 1-2 more entree options per week, the quantities do last into the start of the weekend and is worth it for the fresh (never frozen), high quality and super tasty meals that I've really been enjoying. I have been wanting to switch over to a healthier lifestyle, but working full time puts the kibosh on that in many ways. Enter Vegin Out! I randomly signed up for one week of delivery on a Saturday morning using a $20 off coupon code they so graciously provided newcomers on their Twitter page. A personalized email welcomed me to the service, but also let me know that orders must be placed at 5pm on Friday evenings to ensure delivery on Monday. Good to know! They let me know they would try to accommodate my order, but no guarantees. If the order could not be met, they would be happy to refund me with a meal credit or just back on my credit card. I thought this was great customer service that they were even willing to consider taking my order even though I hadn't placed it on time. Long story short they were able to accommodate me, and I am so glad they did! I received a call from the sweetheart delivery driver at 12:30 pm (perfectly on time within the 12-4pm window) letting me know she was leaving the goods outside my apartment. I arrived home to a little green cooler waiting for me. I was honestly shocked with how much food you're given for the price. I am going to have to recruit a few friends to help me eat it all! (Not that they'd be bothered by my healthy choices) I tasted a little of everything, and it's all so good! In regards to the items lacking flavor, you may be used to the crap they're calling food these days, (hey, I was!) but I can assure you this is real food. Nutritious and flavorful! You cannot go wrong with Vegin Out. I love how they list all of the ingredients and you can actually pronounce each item on the list. That is a real rarity these days! Thanks again Vegin Out. The food is excellent.... everything arrived on time... packed well.. and cool. My only complaint is the amount of food one gets for $145 (the ice packs in the box took up more space than the food). It said I was buying nine single meals... I only got four single meals out of it (one will be tomorrow)... so $145 for four meals ($38 each), is not good. I received eight containers... four of them were small sized.... and one of those four was kale and tomatoes. Again, the food was excellent... it's just really hard to justify the price for the quantity... the food was good... but not $38 a meal great. They would have to double the food quantity for it to be reasonable. I think I will just go to my local vegetarian restaurant and order food to go, and it will be 1/3 the price and fresh that day. I'm out driving around anyway.... or there are also ordering services that will deliver the food for a few dollars. I don't mind paying $145 a week... but it has to be a reasonable amount of food I get for that $145. Oh, and the cookies were basically crumbles... they didn't even look like cookies. In response to Vegin Out's response: I'm well aware of the cost for doing business... however restaurants have similar level costs... the retail location, staff, waiters, cleanup people, etc., etc. And I wouldn't mind paying more just for the convenience of having the food shipped to me... but not double the price on what a restaurant might charge. And yes, I know that each container is three servings... I can read the label. Still, I only got fours meals out of what you call nine meals. My family's been getting the weekly orders for the last four months or so and it's been very convenient. The portions are small, which is probably not a bad thing for my waistline, but the menu items start to go into "reruns" fairly quickly. I agree with other reviewers that the food is mighty bland (especially curries, typically not known for blandness!), but I get that they have to cater to the lowest common spice denominator. That just happens to be the opposite end of the spectrum for me. All in all, a handy service for busy people, but I have to skip weeks for a while to avoid getting bogged down in repetitious menu items. read more

The price is perfect. I normally eat whole foods, not faux meats and what not but my boyfriend prefers vegan junk food. We live together. He pays the rent, I pay for groceries, and cook since he's 'afraid' of the stove. I pay more for groceries in a month than he does for rent! This service saves me a bit of money and the stress of planning out meals, cooking and clean up. We are both busy artists in production deadlines means wacky hours and no time to take care of ourselves. The food is fabulous too! I know someone said it was downright awful but I don't see how. I am a bit of a vegan foodie and my boyfriend has an impossible palate. He loves everything they send us, including the Kale salad! I can't get him to eat anything green and he loved it! The portions are great too. I feel satisfied and it helps me control my serving sizes. We have such a skewed idea of what a serving size is and this puts it into perspective. I've never had trouble with delivery either. Monday is a happy day because I know I've got a week's worth of quality food ready to eat when I get home. I had a groupon for this, so it was an exceptionally good deal. I absolutely loved the food and loved that it was vegan. I had some really innovative soups, salads, and pastas that were all filling and healthy. The cookies are phenomenal too. My husband, who is not typically fan of vegetarian food, also really loved the meals. My particular favorites were the shephard's pie, the buffalo cauliflower (though it started to taste a little off later on in the week) and the lemon sugar cookie. Yum! The only drawback is that after a few days, you start to get a little tired of eating the same meals. But the great thing is that they give you plenty of food! Vegin Out is the best prepared food delivery service in LA. The food is fresh, flavorful and creative. It just happens to be vegan, which is good for the environment and a statement in favor of animal welfare. I like the balance of ingredients and the diversity of spices and preparation methods used in each dish. I've been eating this food sporadically for the last three months and the service has been flawless. They have delivered it on time and the food is always fresh and well packed. From my experience the food tastes better when you reheat it using a traditional pan since it enhances the flavors even more. I really enjoyed this food delivery company. The food was always fresh and the portions were really large. My only complaint is the delivery process. They provide you so much food that it lasts way longer than my 5 weekday lunches. Also, the food usually arrives on Mondays. Thus, it only helps me for 4 workdays during the week. I typically prepare my own dinners and cook on the weekends. If you can find a coupon online I would definitely give them a try. You'll love the dishes. However, if you're like me and especially need your Monday meals and prefer not the eat the food for lunch and dinner all week it's too much for one person before you get tired of that week's menu. I have been eating vegin out for over a year now and absolutely love it! I am a total omnivore but feel great about limiting the amount of animal products I ingest and I don't miss them at all with this food! Although, occasionally, I add a bit of cheese to some of the dishes if I'm feeling decadent. Each week I get excited to hear about the next menu. They always seem to keep it fresh (pun intended) and great new dishes are constantly being added to the amazing repertoire. Some of the dishes that make me wish I had another order are the curried chickpeas (so addictive, I have to be careful not to polish off the whole container in one sitting), roasted veggies of any kind, chickpea salad (I can't believe it's not tuna salad!) and southwest potato salad. The soups are always amazing and don't get me started on the cookies. I work multiple jobs and am often away from home for 14 hours a day so this food is pretty much a lifesaver. I bring it to work for lunch and it's waiting for me when I get home, exhausted. In the few minutes it takes me to heat up a main dish, I'm already relaxing and munching on a side dish! I will even admit to eating it cold right from the container for breakfast. Who says sweet potatoes and tofu isn't breakfast food? With the generous portions of each dish, I can get much more than the advertised 10 meals. They use some ingredients that I had barely heard of, let alone attempted to make like quinoa and seitan. I understand that they have to season the food to appeal to the masses and most of the food needs no assistance but it's easy to throw in some fresh cracked pepper in the soup or some sea salt on the pasta if you like. As my mom always said, it's easier to add seasoning than it is to take it away. I like some heat so I add cayenne to some dishes like the thai peanut noodle salad to give it a little kick. There's great variety in the dishes and I'm pretty sure they offer other customization options like using rice pasta or omitting certain ingredients if they can. I just love it all the way it is! I ordered the 4-week delivery service. I love to cook and am very familiar with vegan cuisine, and decided to give this a try based on my current schedule and inability to shop for fresh ingredients at the moment. Last week was week 1 and the delivery was efficient. No complaints there. Of the 3 entrees, 2 were amazing (pesto tofu and morrocan chickpea stew) and I would order them again, but the 3rd pasta dish lacked any flavor and was really like a cold old deli pasta I would not order or pay for it. gave that one away. As far as the side dishes, the roasted veggies (broccoli, sugar snap peas) were fresh and good, the kale salad that seems to reappear every week, was yummy chiefly due to the dressing, and the roasted potatoes were fine. The lemon thyme cookies were the best, not to sweet, and unique. This week's delivery includes a seitan stew which I typically enjoy when I make it but this one had an odd sour taste. The veggie tofu curry was good but needed more coconut milk, as it was a bit dry; the wild mushroom penne was good but lacking in flavor (garlic perhaps) and could use more "wild" mushrooms. Side dishes: roasted reds had a lot of giant chunks of red onion, but potato part was excellent; garden bulgar was light and fluffy, but lacking in acid (could use more lemon and less bell pepper); roasted cauliflower carrots were amazing. the maple pecan cookie was ok. they have a nice maple taste but the texture is too soft and borders on cookie dough. no comparison to the lemon thyme cookie. soups are great but need more flavor and less liquid. on a side note, at first, the entree looks like one hefty portion rather than 3 separate, but once you dig in the amount of food is quite satisfying. I ended up sharing meals with others and freezing the soup. bottom line: these people know how to roast veggies, deliver promptly and efficiently, create great salad dressing, use fresh ingredients with hints of herbs here and there, and overall create a satsifying menu that nearly anyone could enjoy. you may end up eating the 3 or 4 dishes that you enjoy most and sharing the others, as i did. I realize they offer substitutes as well but I want to give each creation a try. In the end, with the groupon deal - it's definitely worth giving it a try and certainly provides a huge convenience. read more

DO NOT BELIEVE THE "5 STAR" REVIEWS! As a first time customer, I had high hopes after reading the reviews. Much to my disappointment, the food was so bland and tasteless that I ended up throwing half of it out. The entire quart of pea soup had burnt black chunks floating around, and the peas were chalky and hard. The chow mein was mostly noodles (hardly and veggies) and like everything else, was completely devoid of spices and flavor. The chickpea salad was so aweful that it was thrown out after the first bite. And don't get me started on the lasagna...now, being vegan for quite some time, I have learned to make a killer veggie lasagna, but this didn't even come close! Where were the veggies? The sauce? It was a pile of unflavored mushy tofu and soggy noodles. Yuck! What a WASTE, especially considering how much money I paid ($135). To make it worse, the portions were extremely small, but ultimately that didn't matter because the food was just so so bad. Bottom line, Vegin Out = POOR QUALITY AND POOR QUANTITY. The food is wonderful! I love having fresh, healthy food delivered right to my door so I have one less thing to stress about. They even appreciate feedback on their foods to improve future service. I've purchased from them off and on for a while (during finals weeks), and I've loved almost everything they've sent. The food arrives chilled, but fresh; I usually put a couple dishes in the freezer though to make sure they keep til the end of the week. The deliveries are for a week of food, but for me it lasts a little beyond. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I wish it was a little cheaper. Thanks to a Living Social deal, I was able to try Vegin Out for much less than the regular cost....and am so impressed that I'm planning on ordering again once every couple months or so as a treat when I don't feel like cooking. Especially on weeks like this where I'm overwhelmed with work and other such things that need to be taken care of, nutrition tends to fall by the wayside, and this makes it really easy to get healthy, nutritious meals when I can't muster the energy to make them myself. They gave me a delivery window of 12:00 to 3:00 and arrived around 2:00 with a grocery bag full of yummy food, each with preparation instructions and an ingredient list. The tofu & broccoli, cauliflower soup, pasta primavera, spring succotash, sour cream & chive mashed potatoes, and black bean tamale pie are all definite wins. The kale with rice & chickpeas = bleh. Oh well...can't win 'em all! Their blueberry muffin cookies make up for it - some of the best cookies I've ever had! I was a lapsed vegan and Vegin Out kickstarted my vegan quest once again - hoorah! Tried my first delivery with Vegin' Out this week (1/27/14). I have to admit, I was a little skeptical. They proved me wrong. What a great experience! I've already placed my order for next week. Very high quality meals. The quantity of the food is perfect for me. For me the level of seasoning is great. Over seasoning can't be undone, if I need a little more, I can add it for myself. I'm digging this service. Yes, the food can be a bit bland, but nothing that a little sea salt won't fix. Mostly, it's the convenience that I love, especially with a new baby at home and a husband who commutes an hour each way to work. Having pre-made healthy vegan dinners is so much better than having the hubby stop and pick up drive-through food on his way home, and definitely better than trying to cook dinner while already juggling a full-time career with caring for an 11-week-old infant. I am not vegan, but I am a working student, wife, and mother of two that does not have time to prepare super healthy meals every night (I've even made Hamburger Helper on school nights - GASP). Vegin Out has great fresh vegi dishes that I serve as sides, eat for lunches or mix in with some eggs or protein. My kids are already used to eating a lot of vegetables, so my kids love it and I don't have to chop and prepare tons of vegetables AND figure out how to get my 10 page term paper done! read more

The nice thing about this, rather than, say, take-out, is that you know what you're eating: They send a list along with all the ingredients, it's mostly organic, there are no animal products, and there tends to be little sodium. The meals, in the interest of health, can be a bit bland. But this is nothing a little sea salt, hot sauce, etc won't fix. Occasionally I'll do something else creative with the side dishes to turn them into a main dish: like the garlic greens I chopped up and cooked into rice. I've been a double order customer of Vegin-Out for years. But around the beginning of this year, things began to change, ?new owners?. The quality of the produce was the first to decline, then vegetable salads were mushy bland. The Tuscan Potato Salad was bland and 1/2 of the potatoes were very hard and undercooked. Good stuff, like those great olives that used to be in the Mediterranean Spaghetti were gone. And this week both bags were delivered with shattered soup containers, all the food awash in peanut squash soup, the result of a penny pinching shift to thinner plastic. I'm sadly over it. At $250 a week, I think I can do better. I will miss the convenience and really miss the very tasty food they USED to have.
