Service was phenomenal, staff was so knowledgeable on the menu and super attentive throughout! We were celebrating and were offered a complimentary toast and dessert. Food came out quick and every last bite was delicious. Definitely get the salsa trio, the macha salsa is oil based with chilis and peanuts and was out of this world. Everything was SO FRESH. Edit: I had one of the best dining experiences at Vecino. Originally I had a bit of an off experience the first time I went. The owner reached out to me personally and invited me back. First, the food was amazing (although that was always true), but it tasted even better than when I had previously been. The highlights were the steak, boy choy, and tres leches. I went with a friend and we both agreed it was one of the best meals we had in a while. What I really appreciated when I went back was the attentive of the waitress. I also noted that the service seemed to be great at the other tables, so I didn't feel like it was something that was just happening to me after being invited back. I am so excited to go back now and really appreciate the personal effort the owner took to make it a great experience! Original: I want to start off by saying there were some really delicious flavors, and I hope this place succeeds. The primary problem I had with Vecino was the service which seems consistent with some other reviews. *I should preface this by saying the restaurant was less 40% full (relevant to the review). Within less than a minute of sitting down, the server was already asking what we wanted to drink, and we told him we needed some time. Every minute or two, he would come back and ask our drink order. So finally, after the third time, we felt pressured and just ordered some random cocktails from the front page of the drink list. He then immediately asks what we want to eat, but we tell him we haven't even had a chance to look at the food menu yet. He comes back again a minute later, and again, we said we needed more time. After that, he doesn't come back for another 20ish minutes. So in the first ten minutes, he came to our table 5 times and then was nowhere be found for the following 20 minutes. When our food came out, we got maybe 5 minutes to enjoy it and then every 2-3 minutes, our waiter and other staff in the restaurant are trying to grab our plates that still had food on them. Keep in mind, the restaurant is over half empty and is hours away from closing, so there was no reason to rush. Cherry on top was that without saying a word, the server just took my cocktail at one point (that I was still drinking), and then a minute later comes back asking if I want another drink??? Vecino has potential but the service made the whole experience feel very substandard. read more

If you are in the Detroit area this restaurant is a HUGE MUST! Some of the best food I've ever eaten. We love Mexican food but this is literally next level. Maricela was our server and not only was she a delight, but also a wealth of knowledge on the food and selections. The ambience and decor add to the incredible experience. Came here to celebrate a birthday during my visit to Michigan. This place is not your typical Mexican restaurant. Their website calls it a "fusion of modern Mexican cuisine". The dishes are meant to be shared. We started with Chips and guacamole. The guacamole had a nice thick chunky texture to it. For our meal, we shared a Snapper. What they do is split it open and they cook each side 2 different ways. It's definitely enough for 2 people, possibly 3 (there was 3 of us). We also ordered the Tlayuda. It's basically the size for 1 person but we shared it. Our meal came with a trio of salsa...all 3 really went well with our meals. We had several of their craft cocktails and I can honestly say that they're as good as it gets. For dessert, the birthday girl had the Pan Del Elote. If you want more details of all the ingredients you can visit their website. The one thing I was hoping for was that the Enchiladas had another option other than duck, like lobster. The vibe in this place is definitely really cool. A great place to go to for a celebration. Our waitress was Marucela. She was a great schmoozer...by the end of the night she became a friend. This was my second visit at Vecino and I will definitely be back for a third. The food is amazing and authentic. The service is even better as well. The waitress helped us with the menu and gave amazing recommendations. The asado del dia has been a solid choice both visits with the meat cooked to perfection with excellent flavor. The blue corn tortillas are also amazing and taste so fresh. This time we had the tres leches for dessert which was also amazing with perfect texture of the cake with more than enough milk... it was amazing. Love love love vecino. read more

I was visiting from out of town with my family, and we found this restaurant online. The drinks: they have an extensive tequila and mezcal list, and your server will be happy to make recommendations. The food: we had the ribeye and the snapper. The steak was very good- honestly, it was one of the better steaks I've had at a restaurant (I don't live in Detroit, but the steak here was beating what are considered some of the best of what my local city offers- Kevin Rathbun, Hal's,...). The snapper was tasty but a tad dry. I would have preferred it to be a bit more buttery. Otherwise, this was a cool spot in a nice neighborhood. read more

Upon walking in you definitely can feel the Mexican authenticity. So I can definitely appreciate the ambiance, feels like Tulum in Detroit. Once we were seated we were struggling with the menu, I think it's the font they use and the size. It makes the menu hard to read so you almost don't want to order. But let me tell you, STAY AND ORDER. Our bartender walked us through the menu. We decided on the Duck Enchilada and Snapper wow amazing!!!!! I went to this place to experience the marketed cuisine. I waited for an hour to be seated when there were clearly many seats available. It was not until I made my reservation on line while I was waiting and then showed it to the host who then agreed to seat me. All the wait was for Naught. Not sure what to make of the experience!! Wonderful restaurant with a colorful menu! We started with the ceviche (octopus, clams & shrimp) the moved to the tuna tostada. The main dish was the duck enchiladas which were fabulous. We ended with the buneulo, a green banana ice cream. Will definitely go back! Well done! read more

We were very excited to try Vecino after reading about the different chefs' training and cocktail experience from Alinea group. Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed. The food was tasty but portions were ridiculously small for the price (I understand the concept of small plates but ONE tostada for $18 was crazy to me) Some of the flavors, like the mushroom dish (also $21 for a side) were bland / lacking texture and cocktails were not as good as some of our other Detroit standbys - Selden standard, she-wolf, grey ghost, Wright and co. I recognize they are brand new and the service was excellent which is why I'm giving it 4 stars but after a $250 bill for 2 people we left hungry and will likely not be back. read more

Vecino is exceptional. Check them out now while you can still get a table because this place will be booked solid very soon. They just opened a few weeks before our visit and for a new operation with a fairly small but ambitious menu, they delivered near perfection. First the ambiance. Trendy without trying too hard. Lovely decor, not too noisy. Great music at appropriate volume. Issac, our server, was friendly and pleasant. He knew the menu inside and out and made very helpful suggestions for a family style meal (the only correct way to dine here IMO). Overall service was outstanding from everyone we interacted with. The cocktails were amazing. Tried the spicy margarita - excellent. Moved on to the July to Me, a frothy raspberry and gin masterpiece. Honestly this is one of the better cocktails I've had in years, rivaling Takoi's Paradise in Vortex. Lastly the food...interesting, surprising, different and altogether incredible. Don't miss the tuna tostadas. Decide how many of these you think you need and then double the order. Load up on the small plates as they are all terrific though not huge portions. Main dishes of whole fish and bone in ribeye were both excellent and perfect for sharing. Just one option for dessert when we visited (a corn based cake with gelato and caramel sauce). It was good but not quite the wow factor of the rest of the meal. The owners are a husband/wife team. Adriana was incredibly welcoming and ever-present in the dining room while her husband was busy in the open kitchen doing his thing. Overall this place is going to be a huge hit in a city already filled with great restaurants. Book it with confidence - you won't be disappointed. read more

Detroit's most expensive restaurant? If not, it's very close. I understand this is not your typical Tex-Mex type restaurant, but $16 for guacamole? You want salsa? That is an extra $8 and then you have to pay for chips on top of that. Yikes. Vecino is the new but long-awaited Latin restaurant that just opened near downtown. The interior is nice. Minimalist and refined, but probably doesn't reflect the price point of their food. We ordered a couple of drinks and then the shrimp aguachile ($19), a sope ($14) , a tlayuda ($20) and charro beans ($8). The aguachile had good flavor but it literally consisted of one shrimp which they cut into tiny pieces. The rest of the food was delicious. Fantastic flavors. This is the real Mexican food which is so hard to find in the US. We didn't even order entrees or vegetables-mainly because the prices are outrageous. A side of asparagus is $19, a side of cabbage $24. The entrees average $64. Like I mentioned, this is likely the most expensive restaurant in Detroit. Despite the high prices, the service was not polished. We received our drinks after the food. Our server never checked on us until we were finishing our last bites. I wish them well. This is probably the finest Latin/Mexican restaurant in Detroit but you pay dearly for the privilege. We won't be regulars. read more

Went here for my birthday and was unfortunately was very disappointed. The food was good but service was horrible. In the beginning of the experience, I was patient when my waiter did not approach me and my boyfriend to take our orders, we literally watched him talk to other staff members and check on other tables... he did not approach us until another staff Member came over and asked if we needed any help. We got our first two entrées and they were pretty good all went downhill when we ordered the steak and realized there was a hair in the dish when I informed the waiter he said he was going to see what he could do and spoke with another staff member and pointed out the hair to one of the chefs. We waited then the waiter delivered the salsa We ordered to go with the steak ( with literally no other food, mind you they took the steak and did not discuss a new one or any other item with us), he mentioned again that they were going to figure out what they can do then came over AGAIN and asked how much of the meal we ate to which I had no answer to because they had taken our plate over five-seven minutes before then. After that, no one said anything to me or my boyfriend and continuously walked past us until another staff member caught eyes with me and asked if I needed something.....That's when a woman my waiter talked to about the hair came up and said that I was already being taken care of and informed us that we were waiting for a manager. Which would've been nice to be informed of before they had us waiting and ignored getting back with us. Literally walking past us not saying ANYTHING. We had to have waited over 15 minutes for someone to come over. Assuming this was a manager, she walked up and just drop a dessert menu on our table and asked us to look it over to order dessert. We both looked at her super confused. No one had said anything about the hair or our meal or even offered to remake the steak because we had a hair in it. After I looked at her, she then said she took the steak off of our bill. I also asked if the salsa can be taken off because we were not given the opportunity to have it with our steak meal. She then tried to walk away and said to let a waiter know if we want dessert to which I replied to her asking for the bill. I've never experienced an issue like this at any restaurant before, it was very obvious we were being pushed out because we weren't even offered the conversation about ordering something new or different as if we were somehow scamming them for having a piece of hair in our food. To not even be asked if we want to order something else is absolutely insane. To have a so-called manager approach the table and just drop down a dessert menu as if we were not in the middle of our dinner before it was ruined with a hair is outrageous and disrespectful.. to ask us how much we ate off of a plate that had hair on...It really gave me the impression that they were treating us like we were scamming them, especially after not offering us the opportunity to order something else. we pay for everything we have (obviously) and we tip well.... never in my life Have I had an experience like this. We would have had a new steak made or ordered something else and paid full price for everything despite their nasty ass hair in our food. And may be still would've ordered dessert as we usually do. This felt really cheap on their end. After talking with some other people who work at establishments in the city, it was very obvious that they just wanted to push us out. Sorry to not leave a positive review but the food prices are crazy high and, frankly, the food was not exceptional. Two of us ordered margaritas, which were great and our bartender was a delight. Service was great, too. But, the scoop of guacamole , while excellent, cost $16. We also ordered the maitake mushrooms which were supposedly wood fired but were kind of soggy and the pork enchiladas, which were good but hardly plentiful (appetizer). Our bill $120. I know food and labor costs are high but I didn't find a lot of reason to come back. Sorry to the Vecino team. read more
