After reading the reviews of Vaqueros Carne Asada my wife and I decided to give it a try after spending the night near by. It is a typical Medican restaurant which apparently does more take out business than sit down. We had to place our order before being seated and pick our order up when it was ready, get our plastic forks, knives, spoons and napkins ourselves, and when the food was ready, it was served on, plastic plates. The place has recently been remodeled and is really clean. Fortunately, the food made up for the lack of atmosphere and service. I had ordered the huevos rancheros and my wife ordered a torta. The torta was huge and delicious according to my wife. My huevos rancheros was likewise delicious. The rancheros sauce was a thin sauce with just enough spice to know it was there, but not overwhelming. The frijoles were freshly cooked, but bland, which made for a good contrast with the ranchero sauce. They also have a salsa bar with 2 reds and 1 green along with pickled carrots and jalapeños, as well as tortilla chips. So bottom line would return for the food, if in the vicinity. read more

Realized it was Taco Tuesday and decided to come here to satisfy my craving. Saw a sign that said "$1.25- Beef Tacos and $1.85 Street Tacos" so I ordered a bean and cheese burrito with 2 beef tacos. She says, "Okay. $12.??" I pull up to the window and she quickly takes my card, hands me my food and hands me back the card before I could ask how much she charged me for the tacos. I look at my receipt and they charged me $6.50 for TWO TACOS!!! The shell better have been made out of gold. So I ask about the charge and she got annoyed with me and had a manager come to the window. I explain that I ordered 2 beef tacos because they had a sign for $1.25. The manager tells me, "Those are different." I'm like, "How are they different? It says beef tacos, I ordered beef tacos." She told me those tacos are smaller which is why they're $1.25 so I ordered wrong!!! Seriously?!? Then she had me hand back my food so she can take the tacos out and get me the correct one. I just want to get out of there but she recharges me, as well then hands me my food. I get home, the tacos have like 2 strands of cheese on them and are 80% lettuce. I understand for $1.25, I'm not going to get much, but if I wanted a head of deep fried lettuce I could've done that myself. Beans stated burnt and although they charged $3.90 for a plain bean burrito, then charged me $1.05 to put cheese on it, it like the taco, had next to NO cheese. Disappointed and still hungry. Was on my way home, wanted to see if this one was as good or better than the vaqueros on 17th ave. Now first things first, this store is about $1.50 more expensive, prolly because of Tempe but still must be mentioned. 2nd, the burrito wasn't as big, though it was still bigger than most places. I mention this because if you saw the review on the other location, the burritos were like babies in blankets. This wasnt half that size but it was notably smaller in size and weight. On the plus side, it did have a little more flavor, but that could be time of day. I go to the other location late at night, this was dinner time. It's still a good deal, just not as good. I had a breakfast burrito and I thought it would be different than the typical filibertos type burrito but the egg is always over cooked for me. The over cooked brown egg is good for some but I like mine cooked to where it's not runny and it's yellow in color. read more

So that was the end of my diner, I thought I would share some thoughts about the food and service, First. the Staff are very nice in the drive through I just wish they could keep the order straight, simple order Carne Asada burrito no Guac no Sour Cream just Pico with Extra Carne Asada for another $2.49. Was a little much but alot of food and almost the size for a 1996 - 2006 Carne Asada. Seems all over there shrinking the size and raising the price. With an order of fries, with a drink ( Half Orange / Half Sierra Mist... DaBomb!!) added at the window. I had to remind them about the fries even though she repeated it. And for the love of God. what is the flavor of the carne asada that is so finely chopped if looks and tastes like marinated venison? So the green sauce was really good and lord help you if you use the red...WOW.. The Point, I have tried the Carne Asada Plate, Carne Asada Tacos, Fish Tacos, AND THE Rolled Tacos.... Vaqueros serves monster sized burritos. 1 burrito is big enough for 2 people. And the burritos are always served super piping hot. Let it cool down for 5-10 minutes or you'll burn all your taste buds off and won't be able to taste all of the deliciousness. I recommend the ham & egg, the bacon, egg, potatoe n cheese, and the shredded beef burritos. The food is good, cheap, and plentiful. The service however really sucks. Tip- grab a large horchata. I could not leave Tempe without trying Mexican food. I made sure to come here on my last day, looking forward to really enjoying this. Did, I? Yes I did. I tried the Fish TORTAS which is a sandwich (best bread I had in a long time) with beer battered tilapia fresh avocado, tomato, onions, lettuce. Holy Moley! It was huge, ate half and saved the rest for the plane home. My boyfriend had the beef taco, he devoured that in seconds. Also got the fish taco for a friend, very fresh and highly enjoyable. Ton of food for the price, the woman behind the counter was so sweet and very friendly. The restaurant itself was very clean and I loved the picture of Our lady of Guadalupe. There seems to be a lack of decent Mexican food here (I'm from Texas) but I think our of all the lousy Mexican places I've tried, this might be the worst. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and a carne Asada street taco. The enchiladas were made of bland boiled chicken inside of a corn tortilla, drenched in seemingly canned flavorless enchilada sauce and topped with cheese/lettuce. The only part that had any flavor was the cheese. The taco was also lacking flavor, so I put the green salsa on it hoping that would help , but the salsa also had no flavor. This place might be good if you are allergic to spices/seasonings or maybe if you don't have taste buds. It should be illegal for places to sell food this terrible. read more

I've always been a fan of Vaqueros because I find their food much better tasting than most other fast food Mexican food places. The food tends to be not as great when you have bad service. The past two times I've gone the cashiers just have had bad attitudes. Today was probably the worst Yoana who helped me said one word which was the total for my food. Then when it was ready she shoved it out the window and immediately closed it. I couldn't even say Thank you if I wanted to. Then I got home to try and enjoy my food and they didn't even put the cheese I paid $1.05 extra for on my tacos. I drove back and went inside to let them know and showed her the tacos. She proceeded to ask me if I got the side of cheese in the bag cause we charged you for? Duhh and No hence why I'm back here. I said no, I ordered 2 carne asada quesadillas and responded by saying unless they put the extra cheese on them. I don't know why they would since I said add cheese to the tacos. Clearly bothered by me just trying to get them to correct my order she gets me a side of cheese and turn back to what she was doing but before doing so she places my receipt at the register. I said that's my receipt I'd like that. She's responds with attitude she has to keep it, confused I'm ask why? She said something that made no sense as to why she needed it. She rudely asked do you want a copy. I'm like yes. Mind you she's taking drive thru orders this whole time clearly trying to avoid talking to me at all costs. She rudely says give me second. Again clearly upset she goes thru the computer to reprint my receipt once she finds it and then places it on the counter as says nothing more and again turning her back to me to ignore me and clearly not being helpful in correcting their error. I don't know about you but bad service really makes a meal unenjoyable and this experience did just that. I'm not sure if this review will go any further but I highly recommend you provide your staff with some Customer Service training so they are not rude to ppl when a mistake is made and one is simply trying to get it fixed. I have been coming here for lunch a few times a month for at least 6 years, the food was always decent, but nothing special, just close to work. I hadn't been there since March due to the Pandemic, and I don't know what changed in that time span, but wow, they really went downhill fast!! Went there on Thursday, May 28th 2020, and I got my standard two beef tacos, both of which had shells that were so water wet and soggy on the bottom that I couldn't even eat them like a taco, the bottoms just dissolved as I tried to pick them up, the shredded cheese was dissolving like it had been soaking in water all day as well. Chalked it up to a bad day, and gave them another chance today, Friday, June 5th 2020. Same order, two beef tacos. I decided to pull over next door to check out the tacos this time, and found that I was given two enchiladas. Walked back over to the window, just as they were giving my tacos to a lady that had ordered the enchiladas, so we swapped. Got back to the office with my tacos, and yep, one was a little less water soggy than last week, but the other was the same as last time, maybe worse, and the meat was really cold in both !! I'm kicking myself for coming here knowing they're normally not the cleanest. But after this trip I'm sure I'll never be back to this location. When I finished placing my order I just so happened to look down and see a small but dead baby rat decaying right under the menu. I started to get out to take a pic but sure enough a car was right behind and I had to pull forward. Upon examination there was also old food scatted in the same area(bait?). I still payed for it and I tried to eat my food, but I noticed how watery and warm the sour cream was, that mixed with the cheese that never melted I had to just throw it away in the trash. I used to love this place but now I see why my mom would never order food with me. They are so dirty!! Now that I remember I actually stopped coming here after I seen the workers let their kids sit on the counter while they were filling salsa for to go orders!!! This is probably the closest place I have near me if I am craving some mexican food. I usually get the adobada burrito. Its really good and the staff is good too. I never had a complaint there at all. They are open most of the time too, sometimes even 24 hours. I've only been to this place for breakfast, but boy let me tell you, If you're hungry for a breakfast burrito this is the place to go! I usually get a bacon egg and cheese burrito, the burrito is huge you can easily split between two people. The bacon is cooked perfectly and the cheese is gooey and delicious. Throw some of their green sauce on there and their home made chips and salsa and this is easily my favorite mexican place for breakfast. I love how you can always see the chefs hard at work in the morning prepping, you can tell they use quality ingredients. They also remodeled the inside and it looks much nicer now. It has been a tough place to find. Living in Phoenix there are plenty of Mexican restaurants to go to. All serve the same thing- tacos, Tortas, burritos, quesadillas, and so on. It's nothing new. So what sets this place apart is the taste of their food and the diversity of the items available. Their portions are large. So what do I mean by diversity in food. Well, Gorditas, pozole, tamales, menudo, sopes, flautas, and all of the other stuff offered in both corn or flower tortillas.
