I have been going to this Ace Hardware location for the past 15+ years, and when I pass through Tracy. However, I have noticed that in the last five or six years or so, that the customer service level has somewhat diminished. And I went to this location earlier in the week, and after spending about 25 minutes finding all of the parts that I needed, I made my way to the register. And now, I consider myself a patriot, and I am a US military combat veteran, but when I saw the sign in the aisle that stated "running the world since 1776", I placed my $120 worth of items down on an end, and left the location. Needless to say, if I see items displayed in a store that are mainly found on far right wing websites, (and that's putting it mildly), they don't deserve my business. I will no longer patronize this location. read more

What a terrible service. I specifically asked for a chord to use with electric lawn mower. But the lady seemed to not care too much about the detail of the query and simply sent me to "16". I ended up picking a chord that was NOT compatible with electric mower. Waste of time... gonna go back and return. If only you folks listen to customers' query and then help them find the right part, the experience would be a lot more smoother. Drove out of way just to get this fire pit which is 29$ on sale from 39.99$. Went out to garden area gentleman who helped us was quite pleasant even mentioned what a good deal it was and found one and put it in our cart... This is where the good part ends, went to the register our sales rep says ok 43$ I said no this is on ad, she says I dunno asks other register person who says I dunno maybe it's online only where did you see that it's on sale my wife said that it was on the ad that was sent to our house then she says "do you have the ad with you?" Umm no but we can show you the ad on the phone, she calls the manager who hmms and haws for a bit and says I dunno maybe you can buy it online? They will ship it to us and you can pick it up? Wth this was such a runaround that wasted my time and they did not even offer to sell it to us for the price that is mentioned they do not have any customer service whatsoever. Only one star for the garden employee who put in our cart to the alabaster crew upfront learn to help your customer. There is a Harbor freight tools just down the street and they are cheaper to boot will visit that store for all future purchases. I would rather go to lowes or Home Depot even. Ugh what a horrible experience. Head to your chain home development store and let relics who don't care for you see the money also goes to stores who take care of customer service. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! My husband is a contractor who visits Ace Hardware in Tracy quite often to support local business. Yesterday, he rented a pressure washer to do a job in El Sobrante for today. When he tried to start it up this morning, it would not turn on even after he added gas (that should have been there in the first place) When he got back into town today he took the machine back and requested a refund. He was denied because he didn't call to report the problem within the two hour window allowed, after renting (per their procedure) making it impossible because he didn't need it until the following day. The manager on duty informed him that their procedure also includes adding gas to the machine (never happened) and starting it up to ensure it worked properly (this also, never happened) My husband had a crew (on the clock) while he had to make the executive decision to just purchase a new power washer and get the job done. It would have take about three hours to drive the machine back to Tracy and get a new one (if even available) After speaking to a second manager requesting our $80 refund, we were told the same thing. PROCEDURE! ACE, if you want to implement your "procedure", you should follow them on your end too. read more

Lousy. I came to Van's to return a U-haul. I arrived...'round 4:50 and had my hustle on because I saw on the paperwork they closed at 5 (the Uhaul part, the rest of the store is presumably open later). There was no signage directing me where to go, so I got in line at the check out. 5 minutes wasted, although the cashier was nice enough when it was my turn to direct me to the appropriate counter. I ran to the counter only to find it empty. There was not an employee to be found anywhere. Eventually a woman went behind the counter, did something on a computer, never even looked at me and then hollered at someone that there were customers at the counter. A second employee came over only to learn that I wanted to return a truck (and he was apparently not authorized to take care of this). He called to a third employee who, without even giving me the courtesy of looking at me, said the computers for uhaul turn off at five and "she" isnt here anymore. I looked at my watch, it wasnt 5. I asked what happened now. I thought the third employee was talking to the second employee when he said that he would show him where the truck goes after hours, but apparently he was talking to me and became impatient when I did not hop to it. I didnt know he was talking to me because again, he was not looking at me. We walked me out back waved his hand in the general direction of a small box where I was to deposit my truck stuff. When I asked about confirming the mileage and fuel level (since they charge 30 bucks plus a per gallon fee you know Im following up on that!), AGAIN without looking at me he said something about calling at 8 and then walked off. If this is the level of customer service I can expect at Vans, no thanks! Im not particularly peeved about the whole 5pm deal--that persons shift is up, they want to go home, I get it. But for the love of pete, look at your dang customers...granted I had been moving crap all day, Im sure I didnt look great, but I wouldnt have turned you to stone either! Having just moved into my new abode, you better believe there are home improvement and garden items I need to purchase, and I will be purchasing them somewhere else. read more

This is my first stop hardware store in Tracy. Ace has decent prices and a very adequate neighborhood hardware store inventory. By that I mean that Ace has the stuff you typically go to a hardware store for ... stuff like & bolts, fertilizer, and sprinkler heads. You will not find 200 hanging lamps to choose from or a lumber yard out back. Where Ace leaves the big box hardware stores in the dust is in customer service. There are, typically, lots of people working in the red, Ace aprons. They'll help you find what you need and give you pointers on how to use the products. Van's also has very good paint at fair prices. They're happy to help color the paint to match a sample you might bring. I've used their paints for all of our home painting projects over the last decade. There is a nice garden section where I've found strawberry plants, landscaping plants, groundcover, and some great deals on soil conditioner. The clerk even insisted on helping me load the sacks of soil conditioner into my car. That is something that just doesn't happen at a Home Depot or a Lowe's If you like buying local and appreciate friendly service, Ace is the Place. And, if you get an Ace card, you'll get coupons in the mail and periodically a credit for $5 or $10. read more

I was looking for a particular kind of paint and Ace Hardware was the only store that had the two colors I needed and with the best price. I bought online to pickup in store. I received my email and headed over, but the store was super busy. Not only were the cashiers all attentive but we're helpful in finding my order as it some how got lost in the shuffle in the back. We needed a wheelbarrow, and failing to get anything resembling customer service at OSH went to Van's. We were shocked and amazed at the difference between the two. Let me tell you about it. The wheelbarrows were outside. They were well assembled but the tires were flat on them. I'm sure they had been sitting in the sun a while so I guess that can happen. We selected the one we liked and went inside to request one thinking they would bring one out from the back. The cashier called someone on the store communication system (cool ear bud thingies) and two guys showed up IMMEDIATELY and started unlocking the one we wanted from outside the store. The cashier was nice, friendly and polite. When they brought the wheelbarrow in the wheels were squeaking (it has 2) and the tire was flat. He looked very embarrassed and said he would air up the tire and put some WD40 on the axel for us and be right back. Less than 5 minutes later he was back with a silent and well aired up wheelbarrow. We went to take it and put it in my little Toyota ECHO, I had all 4 doors open and hadn't been staring at it for even 5 minutes when he (the same person who aired it up) ran out and asked if we wanted it delivered he said his delivery person could bring it by in 2 hours when he arrived for work if we weren't in to big of a hurry. We stated we didn't think we could fit it in the car and that would be great. He replied he didn't see a truck in the lot when he went to get the wheelbarrow and wasn't sure how we were getting it home, and that he didn't think it would fit in the car. We went inside and filled out a delivery slip with our address, name, phone number, and some directions. They didn't try to charge us and it was their PLEASURE to see that we had what we needed not an annoyance or a hardship. WOW!! We went to leave and I was just SO stunned I went back in, thanked the cashier (the gentleman that helped us was already off doing a different task) and explained to her how horrible an experience we had at OSH. She was delighted and said anything we need ANYTHING just let them know and they would make it happen. She said if she didn't have something in the store she could order it. I'm going here first from now on. They may not have a HUGE selection but they have most of what they need and there are few things I can't wait a few days for, I want to give my money to someone who understands customer service and cares about me. He wasn't he's a neighbor apparently. He went in to pick up a rototiller and the guy from the store asked him to bring it by our house. I purchased a Green Mountain Grill less than a year ago from this Ace Hardware store. The unit has been defective from the second time I tried using it. I have replaced MULTIPLE parts sent to me by Green Mountain. I've replaced the igniter 3 times and the control board which I was told would fix all of the smokers issues. I was told by Green Mountain the last time I contacted them that they would contact ACE because I was clearly sold a lemon. ACE Hardware told them they would not replace my grill or return the $879 I paid for this piece of crap smoker. Nearly Every-time I go out to use it it has an issue and Green Mountain has to send me another part. Do not buy smokers from ACE Hardware. They won't take care of me, they won't take care of you either. This is the worst purchase I have ever made and I will never shop ACE Hardware again because of their lack of compassion for the products they sell. I hope nobody has the same issues I have had with this purchase. Look elsewhere when purchasing big ticket items from this store. They don't take care of their customers. First issue was a few months in. If there were zero stars that's what they'd be getting. I will not stop until the right thing is done. read more

I've been going to this store since they were in a small Quonset hut building on East Grantline. The customer service here has always been stellar, but today was better than ever. There's a reason why True value went from two to one to no stores, while Van's moved to a larger store. Today I bought three electric sprinkler valves. I installed them and turned the water on only to find that the solenoid plunger was missing on one. I went back, receipt and empty box in-hand, and explained what happened. The gentleman pulled one off the shelf, and gave me the plunger from another unit. He asked to show the receipt to a manager, who looked at it and said "well, we're just going to toss the rest, would you like to keep the whole solenoid?" There is a reason why I go to locally owned stores vs. chains whenever possible. I live around the corner from an OSH store, but still prefer driving a little further for the service I get here. This store is like walking into a morgue! The only reason why I have continue to shop at this location for the past 3 years is because I live around the corner and have difficulty getting around. There used to be a very friendly blonde lady that worked there, but I haven't seen her in the store for almost a month. "Ace is the Place" for friendly knowledgeable staff and just about everything you need for your home, tool shed or garden. No, it's not as big as Home Depot but unless you are a contractor, you probably don't need 25lbs of nails or 2 tons of Sheetrock. Ace has what you need for your household...and easy to find. For example, Home Depot doesn't carry the 22x17.5x4inch air cleaners that all new home on the south side of Valpico need (you'd think they'd figure that out by now). Ace employees still wear the headsets so they don't have to give you the, "I don't know let me ask" only to never return because they get lost in the wear house or another lost costumer tracks down their orange vests. Ace employees simply radio in, get an answer and direct you to the right isle, part, tool, etc. I once took a napkin sketch diagram of a sprinkler project to Ace. The employee (I think his name is Kyle) basically did my shopping for me and showed me a few ways to save some money. Where else do you get this service. Visit the back half of the store where you can rent tools and machines...for cheap. If there is a line, grab a bag of FREE popcorn (made in an old fashion popper). Again, where else can you get this kind of service!?! Ace is and will always be my first choice. PS: if you're looking for something specific in the garden area, just ask! Good selection and fair prices however customer service is sadly non-existent. Went in with my sweet wife and son to pick up a couple of items and browsed around and picked up a couple. Got to the register and was told by Leeann we were at the wrong register although we had approached the register she was at! Got to the "correct register" and began our transaction. My wife said, "Hello," to her with a smile but NOTHING in return? Finished transaction but Leeann the says, "Oh, did you want this?" and held up one of our items sitting right on the counter! She then adds, "I didn't see it." ! She had to re-ring us and while she is doing that she looks at the guy behind us in line and says "I feel you, Bro," giving him a big smile! Outrageous! Hopefully, mgmt. will see this and start training their staff in some basics on how to respect people who are PAYING YOUR LIVELIHOOD! read more

We go to Van's often for random bits and bobs and every spring, for everything our garden needs. This year, we're reclaiming at least part of the back patio from Dad's outdoor man cave, for a nice summer retreat. To do that, we needed dirt, and lots of it! Because of the current drought, we're doing container gardening to better control water usage. We have the containers, we just needed potting soil...lots of it. I went into Van's this morning, knowing what I wanted and where to get it. Tim (pretty sure his name is Tim) who was working in gardening this morning, greeted me and asked if he could help me out. I told him what I was looking for and roughly how much of it I was going to need. Tim leads me over to a pallet full of drastically reduced bags of potting soil, explaining that because the bags were slightly torn or damaged, they couldn't sell them at regular price. I checked the bags and they were not leaking bad or anything. Tim and I proceeded to load up my cart. I grabbed a couple of other things I needed and went in to pay for the lot...which thanks to Tim's great customer service, was a fraction of what I was prepared and expecting to pay. Our summer retreat is going to be full of drought tolerant flowers. And we're still going to enjoy harvesting our own tomatoes and herbs as well. I have never been disappointed with the service and selection at Van's, and today it felt like I hit the jackpot! Thanks Van's and keep up the good work! read more

I had purchased a Craftsman 3 piece combo kit that was missing an item. When an employee informed me that a piece was missing, the employee informed me that the flashlight was missing on the set. As a result I decided to purchase the item since I would be getting an Drill and an Impact Drill, thinking I was getting a good deal. When I checked the item at home, I was actually missing a drill, not the flashlight. I immediately returned to the store, and talked to the manager but since the item was on clearance, I was not able to make a return. I wish that they would have issued a return since I purchased the item on incorrect information. My experience with the customer service has been poor. read more

I needed to refill my propane tanks for a trip, the stores webpage states that they close at 6:00. I got inside Ace at 5:46 and was RUDELY told that they wouldn't fill them because they stopped filling tanks at 5:45. The clerk had seen me pulling up, unloading the tanks at the curb, looking for a cart to obviously pull the tanks inside BEFORE the 5:45 mysterious deadline that is not stated on the webpage and never once offered to help, assist, or even tell me to hurry. Her only apparent job was to wipe an already clean door for 20 minutes and be rude to people going inside with her curt "we are closing soon". Honestly I hope the close permanently soon. We are too small of a town to have such RUDE clerks and lack of customer service at a business. I will take my propane and other business elsewhere, I think Nohrs RV refills tanks too. Stores this small should take pride in their customer service since they obviously have little else to compete with big box stores. read more

This review is for the truck rental department of the store. I reserved a truck rental online and tried to go pick up the truck using the app. They ask for me to take a photo and submit through the app to verify that it matched my ID photo. Which they didn't feel the photos matched... which I do know I have gained a little weight.. so I get it. So I was told I had to go into the location so they could see me in Person with my license to verify it is in fact me. So I did. The rude ass person behind the counter was so rude and refused to even look at my ID and instead just told me I'm SOL because that's not my id. I tried to give her my entire wallet to see all the cards had my name on it and I am in there system because I have rented trucks from them for YEARS. But she wouldn't even try to help and then told the rep on the phone that was trying to help me that I am not the person in the License photo so that they would permanently red flag me in the entire system so now I am unable to rent a uhaul truck any where! This is unbelievable! She was so rude and unprofessional.... not who I would want to be the face of my company for sure!!! This is not the last time they are going to here about this. I will not stop until this is made right. I have offered to provide other proof of my identification but she refused! You can't refuse service to someone because they gained a few pounds BRENDA!!!! Funny how I have NEVER had any problems with someone looking at my license and not being able to see that it was me!!!NEVER!!! read more

Everyone is always so helpful. Although they are a little pricey, the advice is well worth it. Their equipment rental department is great if your plan ahead. They also rent U-Haul trucks. I usually start in the plant department. I suggest the discount plant section first. With a little love you're discounted plants will be amazing in no time. read more

If your doing anything short of building a house, van's should have it for you. They still have business accounts there which is great. You simply can get in and out of there in about a third of the time it takes to get out of home depot. Nice, helpful staff as well, the older staff members can help you out with just about anything you can come up with. read more
