My husband and I have been a fan of the original Elkhart location since it opened. We even had their ice cream truck cater our wedding! We finally made it to the Granger location, where they offer the same delicious products. They have the best ice cream in the world, with a huge variety of flavors and a creaminess you can only get from fresh dairy. The store always smells like fresh-made waffle cones, and is extremely cute inside. I would give them 100 stars if I could. We don't live in town, and my son has a few ingredients he has to avoid, and it makes any kind of restaurant pretty difficult. I try to contact places ahead of time so I can check things without backing up a line in person, or stressing out a server. I'd emailed the store a week or so before going, and they got back to me super quick, answered all my questions, and even sent me a full ingredient list for the flavors I was inquiring about. They could not have been *more* helpful (I did not have the same experience with other ice cream shops in town). We went this week, my son enjoyed both flavors he got, and we will definitely be back. On a recent trip to the South Bend area, I discovered this delightful local ice cream shop. Vanilla Bean is owned and operated by a mother/daughter team. The original location is in Elkhart, with this second location in Granger within Heritage Square. The ice cream here is all homemade, and you can tell. It is some of the most delicious and creamy ice cream I've ever had. Flavors include Strawberry Brownie Cheesecake, Elk Tracks, Amish Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Cream Pie, Blueberry Cheesecake and many more. On Tuesdays, they have "Taco Tuesdays" - a waffle cone in the shape of a taco with ice cream scoops and toppings. Yum! They also have a stocked refrigerator with hand-packed cartons to take home. This location has a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating so you can enjoy your dessert on location. Highly recommend visiting this spot in Granger or Elkhart for your ice cream fix! read more

I'm also a huge fan of The Chief, but I might have to split my time between the two. Flavor selection is great as well - maybe 20-30 total? I tasted a number of them and they were all equally high quality. Whoever is creating these really deeply cares about how their ice cream tastes. Homemade waffle cones = delish. I had a key lime pie cheesecake waffle cone, and I did not see any room for improvement from a flavor and texture standpoint. My favorite ice cream place ever and I'm definitely an ice cream enthusiast. The banana pudding has real pudding chunks. I like to get a double with banana pudding on top and either blueberry cheesecake or strawberry brownie cheesecake on bottom. The blueberry has real local blueberries and the strawberry has homemade brownie chunks. You can just TASTE the quality and it's cheaper than other places like Paddyshack. 10/10 read more

Have always had really good ice cream here until our last visit. Our son who is autistic and can't always tell us what's wrong, has a dairy allergy. We ordered the non dairy salted caramel for him and he refused to eat it. When we finally tasted it, we realized it was totally spoiled and rancid. If he had eaten it, it could have made him really sick. When we told the young girls at the counter, they said they were sorry, but not offer of a refund, and it didn't look like they were removing it from the cooler. Not good. read more

Their main location is in Elkhart, but we found a second location around the corner from our hotel. It is not in a busy area on a Saturday night, but there were a good number of customers and it is completely understood when tasting their ice cream.
