South Bend Chocolate Factory is big business in South Bend. They sell their chocolate all over the country and have a big store/restaurant in downtown South Bend. This review is in regards to my visit in March 2026. This was my second visit to the SB Chocolate Cafe - my boyfriend and I shared a slice of chocolate cheesecake nearly a year ago. I remember it being very expensive but pretty good and indulgent. I'm a very kind food reviewer, looking past lots of mistakes. But my god, I hated my chicken salad sandwich. The goop inside was so so bad. Everything felt a little too Gordon food service-y. I swear our chicken salad, coleslaw, and mustard potato salad are all from large vats. The overhead must be huge here. For lunch, my bf paid $35 for tax and tip, which is honestly a little expensive for two sandwiches. Don't order lunch here but do check out their actual chocolate store. They make great gifts! And their discounted section is full of cheap treats! read more

We stopped in before a comedy show. Started out empty but ended up packed. They were short staffed for the rush. Place is huge and has everything you could want from soups, sandwiches, coffee, cakes and ice cream. One stop shop for food. I was most amused by the flavored sodas in bottles. They had hot sauce and black olive flavors along with the usually grape and orange. They had creative names like Swamp Juice and Dog Drool too. This place a little confusing... there were two sides with places to order and tables spread throughout. Also, couldn't find any chocolate cake on display... But the reason I wouldn't recommend this place was they microwave their food here. I ordered a grilled chicken salad and after she asked a co-worker how it was made, she proceeded to put chicken (with the bag, but opened to let steam escape) in the microwave. Fortunately, because no one was at the cashier counter, I hadn't paid yet and I immediately said never mind. She asked, "are you sure? I already started it." Yeah, I'm sure. I'm not saying I haven't had my fair share of good tasting reheated chicken.... But couple that with confusing layout, slow service, no chocolate cakes, someone that doesn't know how to make a salad, then microwave chicken in a plastic bag (which can be dry and chewy). My family of four loved this place. There was a little of everything in it: cafe, coffee shop, candy and chocolate shop, bakery, gift store. We ate lunch in the cafe and everyone enjoyed their order. Next we moved into the candy store. My husband, who is not a pumpkin flavor lover, even bought the bag of pumpkin - chocolate covered pretzels. Thank you for making him a believer now! If you want a fast lunch, or a to go lunch, I recommend calling ahead, not sure if they take online orders, or ordering soup in person. The soup is very good especially the Lobster Bisque. I look forward to trying the Broccoli Cheddar. I did take away one star though because when it comes to order sandwiches they're painfully slow. The lobster bisque is very thick and creamy, tastes as good as something you'd get at a fine dining restaurant and I've traveled to both coasts in the USA. We love the one in Indy, it's our holiday tradition to get hot coco and go see downtown Christmas lights every since my hubby and I started dating. Now that we've moved and have two kids, 11 years later, I'm so happy we can continue that tradition. Got here at noon and the palace hadn't been cleaned. Trash can fill in front I'd the jelly beans, every toilet in bathroom full of urine toilet paper and/or blood. All trash cans in the stalls and by the sinks were overflowing. Dining floor still covered in food and spills from day before. Workers wearing gloves from the bathrooms to the kitchen. Did you know their $9 kids Mac n cheese is microwaved? Goldfish are stale. IMO and those whom I know, this place has the worst food in town (aside from the public house). Clearly the dirtiest--shameful disgrace to DTSB. We're done putting money in this guys' pocket. Maybe then he'll start caring about the quality he provides his customers. read more

Cutest little chocolate shop. I read a bunch of reviews before coming in and did not have a bad experience at all, contrary to a few other notes. There were many sale options post holiday, bundle discount options to make more a little less, and I had very friendly service! The manager was working and was a delight to chat with about the city. She was full of suggestions. Even offereing the chocolate shop for hosting events or birthdays! The most important part, you will enjoy anything you get from here too. The chocolate is GREAT! And I pride myself on consuming at least 2 pieces per day. Ha. We bought 3 different specialty chocolates and I had a dark hot chocolate, which isn't an option most places. I would suggest making the hot chocolate a tad hotter, but the flavor was great. Worth the minimal cost and worth visiting if you're in downtown south bend. read more

This is my first visit to the shop, I am NOT impressed. Not impressed with the service recieved. We stopped to try their whole bean coffee and get some truffles and fudge. The lady who "helped"us was just annoyed by us. As in we said "we would like a box of chocolate.. no.. a box... can we have a BOX" as she kept trying to reach for a bag. Big sigh when she had to reach up for a box. In the 10 seconds we looked for our choices she decided we took too long and started folding boxes again (we were literally the only people in queue to buy at the counter). We were going to buy more truffled and get some fudge.. but in that interaction we really just wanted to leave and be done with her without being rude. We asked her what the dome truffle was, she shrugged and said "i really dunno" and didnt even bother to help find out. She was clearly annoyed we had asked. So we left with 4 truffles. Her cohort who came to help her. Informed her she was using the wrong box. The cohort had better customer service skills and personality. Our experience would have been better with cohort I think. The Chocolate Cafe has become an institution in South Bend. I have been coming here for over ten years and every time I stop by, I get quality items. This was a great little place in the middle of many very expensive places to eat! We had started out someplace else but it was $50 for a steak and so we left... we asked if there was a less extravagant place to eat, nearby the Morris center. (We were on our way to see the Newsboys there!) We ended up finding this Chocolate House! It was adorable and there was a great big stuffed Moose in the dining area. It was so cool! The soup that I got was Tomato basil, & it was awesome! Honestly, it was the best soup! My hubby got a very saucey, juicy and yummy pulled pork sandwich on a pretzel roll! Oh My Gosh! My favorite sandwich is the Cuban. If I want a sandwich, it's the first thing I look for on a menu. Here, they had a bit of a unique take on it. The jalapeño coleslaw was simply not for me. While the standard ingredients were all very good, there was too much on the sandwich that ultimately made it a somewhat soggy mess. Okay ya'll. I feel bad giving four stars but I like more malt in my chocolate malt balls than what was given. Otherwise, I had a s'mores hot chocolate from the coffee/chocolate/bar area. I died. It was heavenly. Marshmallowy flavor all the way to the last drop. I know people complain a lot about how unfriendly staff are in their reviews. I just wanna say to the lady who helped me: Sometimes we have bad days and it's gonna be okay. I'm good if you couldn't smile at me. I just hope my smile helped you. I don't know how this place is rated as a 3-star. Is it that hard to please people with coffee, ice cream, and cheesecake? Well, don't count me among those. I was looking for a milkshake in South Bend and this was the closest to my location. Parking is kind of awkward though with the Marriott beside it. South Bend Chocolate Cafe is spacious and has lots of seating like a cafe should. The girl behind the counter was anxious to help me with my milkshake. She allowed me to try some of the ice cream flavors but when it came down to it, chocolate is my favorite. I loved the milkshake! The cherry was embedded in the milkshake and not on top. There were pieces of dark chocolate thrown in it. And the whipped cream on top was flat and layered on top. I had never seen whipped cream like that! And as I was getting my milkshake, I started looking at the different chocolate flavored cheesecakes and started questioning why I did not get a piece of cheesecake. There was even dark chocolate cheesecake on a stick that looked like a small slice of cheesecake on a stick like a popsicle. Go here instead of the Starbucks in the Double Tree hotel!!!! That decision alone will probably be the only thing that brings you back to South Bend! Wow. Any of these characters who rated this haven less than five stars definitely missed a flight the same day or had a one off bad experience with another customer or some other Tiger Woods bogie that doesn't bear on the overall quality of the place. The chocolate cafe is like looking into a smoldering fire, if you're human and you don't like it, you're probably a psychopath, which is okay but just don't lower their yelp score for the whole class. The first day I came in here, I was hungry and asked a guy who was singing along to the radio, maybe Herbie, if breakfast was still available, even though I damn well knew it wasn't from the large sign above my head. He knew so too, and he knew I would just buy something else anyway, but he went ahead and made me an egg sandwich and proclaimed with a jovial smile that it would be the best sandwich I've had. It was wicked good, gooey with real eggs and at a nice price too. I told him I'd be back and I sure was the next morning with my sister. Listen, I'm not toying with you, the second day made the first seem almost normal, though of course it wasn't. When we came in we went straight for the enormous pancake, another egg sandwich without hesitation, two hot chocolates and a blueberry muffin. The muffin made Starbucks look like a Subway in a gas station with no staff (8.5/10, and ask them to heat it up!). The pancake was large as promised, tasty though not as amazing (7.5/10). The egg sandwich was a clean 10/10, even superior to the day before, and I'm confidently saying this EVEN THOUGH these bagels are just okay. Best $4 you ever spent. The nice blond cashier (please give her a raise) said the hot chocolate would be hands down the best we'd ever had. Now child, we've all heard this before, but sweet Lordy was she speaking the truth and more (11/10). We were like two grizzlies dropped in a fish farm pool. And yes we ate and drank ourselves to pain. TLDR: this place is the Shaun White of coffee places, go here for hot cocoa and an egg sandwich even if you don't like either.
