My husband and I were finally able to check this place out. I'm from Brooklyn, NY, so when I asked locally where to go to get a good deli sub, everyone said Vanellis, so I was very excited. The quality of cold cuts is good, but the amount of filling (meat, cheese and veg) to bread is crazy. The bread is probably the best bread we have had in Memphis when it comes to subs, however, it was nothing like the bread back in NY or like any actual Italian bread I've ever had. It's more so a very soft type bread. None of that crunchy outer layer with a soft and pillowy inside that makes us all love deli subs so much up North. If you're looking for a good place for cold cuts, this is one of them. However, you'll be better off just going to Kroger for Boars Head because the prices here are $15-20 per LB for meats and I believe $9-10 per LB for cheeses. Overall, the subs were fine. Nothing special. Definitely not what I expected when being told this was like the deli subs we grew up eating. If you're from up north and are looking for a hero or roll like back home, keep looking. This one is on our "local finds" list. This deli is in the same plaza as the excellent "East Meets West" resto. We were going to go there but decided to check this one out instead. Great deli!!! Popped in for lunch and we were definitely happy with that decision. There is some inside seating and some outside seating, not a lot of either though so it's possible you could end up there with no place to sit but we had a few places from which to choose so, clean living I guess. There were a few people ahead of us in line but the line moved pretty quickly. Employees were friendly and able to answer questions we had. We got an Ami, a spicy roast beef, an Italian sausage grandmama style, and a club. The sandwiches were all very good and there was a good selection of chips as well. So good! They make a great muffaletta, and everything else I've tried has been delicious. Pasta salad is yummy. The place is on the smaller side, and gets a little busy, so I try to eat and scoot so they can turn the table. There is outside seating, but it's still a little chilly right now. We tried the American Hoagie and whatever Italian Sub is #2 on their menus. Both were great the service was also good. If there were any take aways that may be negative was that it was a little cramped, but that's what I expect from a traditional style Italian deli. I wish I could give a better review but I can't. I came here twice for their vaunted meatball sandwich and was both times disappointed. I'm from NJ so flame if you will but here are my thoughts. First, the bread is not very good. It tastes like the bollards from Kroger which have none. Then they slice it all the way through instead of part way to create a pocket which keeps all the sauce (gravy) in. A proper meatball sandwich should have the option of melted mozzarella or provolone cheese on top and be wrapped in aluminum foil for takeout. That would step up their game. An Italian sausage sandwich with peppers and onions would be great. This is like Pete and Sam's Italian. Not even close to what others in the area are doing. You know it took me nearly 3 years to make it here? I guess my only excuse is that sandwiches don't get me all that excited. I feel like I can make a sandwich at home, and I can even pack my own lunch to take with me. When I go out, I want something I can't easily do at home. Boy was I wrong about this place! I just had half of the PI, (I don't even remember what that stands for), and it was unlike any other sandwich I could compare to. It was excellent and I can't wait to have it again. My brother in law and I grabbed dinner here the other night as he was passing through Memphis on his way to a ministry conference in Louisville, KY. I have never been here before so I wanted to give it a try. The place is nice and clean, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We showed up at 6:30 pm (they close at 7:00 pm) and so they were out of a couple of items. We split a FULL baked chicken sandwich and each got a side (he got a side salad and I got a side pasta salad). The sandwich was good, and there is a small canister of Italian seasoning on the table in case you want to give your meal a punch. Good neighborhood sandwich shop in Germantown, TN...I go here probably once a month and have really never been disappointed. I would highly recommend the tuna salad salad....yes over a bed of romaine lettuce not on the bread. Also below are a few other things that make this family owned restaurant worth the visit. 1. The smoked brisket sandwich with homemade mayonnaise ( this is an absolute must and my favorite!) I believe only served on Saturdays 2. Spicy slaw is awesome 3. I stopped in here for lunch last week and had the Italian's chef salad which was filled with smoked turkey, salami,tomatos and cheese. The dressing was great- homemade Italian. The salad would have been a little better with homemade croutons but the salami in the salad was great. Next time I want to try the Italian Bologna with Chow-Chow and some of the take home ravioli. This is a nice neighborhood, family owned deli in the heart of Germantown. I found this restaurant and realized it was local, and I always try to support the local Memphis businesses and I didn't know many good deli restaurants at the time and I got the PI because I love garlic, and that sandwich was very delicious. It had a very good creamy taste from the garlic mayo but you could still taste the meat despite how strong the garlic was. I loved my experience but sadly I'm not in the area enough to eat there often, though if you're nearby I'd recommend this as a place to stop at for sure. 5/5. read more

My third time here and I think it could sadly be my last. I love giving small independent places my business but I felt a bit ripped off. I got a half a sandwich and a bag of chips for 10.50. As you can see from photo the "hot meat" didn't have any au jus to melt the cheese and very little meat to boot. I'm not a huge meat lover but this was skimpy. Had good flavor but didn't really taste like pastrami. It isn't the sandwich that will keep me away as much as the woman making the sandwich, this is the second time she has been rude and abrupt. She gets very annoyed if you ask for a side of mustard or au jus. The nice man at the register apologized for her behavior. Perhaps she shouldn't work in the front of the store. read more
