I might say, just a typical store that you can count on. Good thing no tax! Who can beat that! My one note is, location is not precise, especially in my GPS. It's confusing. My suggestion to my new fellow travelers, set it in the gasoline nearby to get into the store location. Compare to the other commissary, this location is small and the supply is limited. Hopefully the store management can mend on that. Parking is good, but no EV charging port yet. read more

Nice clean store with friendly staff however there is a major issue with regards to expired items on the shelves. As a retired Public Health worker it concerns me because many shoppers don't know this is happening and therefore does not check the dates before purchase. Consuming expired items can be especially dangerous for children and elderly persons. I almost always check the dates when I'm there but my last visit there which was a couple of weeks ago I failed to check a bag of walnuts and last week I decided to open the bag and I looked at the expiration date and sure enough it expired 6 weeks ago so it will be going in the garbage. They need to come up with a solution to this either in their inventory list on the computer or have staff look at the expiration dates when they are stocking the shelves with new supply. Other than this issue I love to shop there. read more

By now, you all know I will shine the spotlight on military facilities. Today is a commissary (grocery store) at Vandenberg (now Space Force) Base. This is a very large military installation; they get a nice large commissary to match the base population. Price used to be a huge advantage but not so much anymore. Most items are still less expensive but the gap between them and the commercial market is much smaller. A huge benefit for anyone living on base is location because it's a long drive to a grocery store off-base. Another nice feature is the deli where you can stop in to grab a bite for lunch instead of the fast food close by and there's really not enough time to drive somewhere and make it back in a short period of time. They have plenty of check-out lanes to keep the flow moving. Baggers work for tips. read more

The commissary is more of a convenience if you live on base. Unfortunately the vegetables are rarely fresh, on more than a few occasions getting broccoli the head of the broccoli was off colored upon breaking it to cut up. Along with that every bag of potatoes I have ever bought has had at least 4-5 bad potatoes. I have had bad experiences with the dairy picking up moldy cheese on 3 separate occasions. Speaking of mold I have seen a bag of beef jerky sticks in the snack isle that were solid white from mold I'm only upset about it because the bad sat on the shelf for 3 days after saying something about it. The meat is ok at best I usually try to get my meat elsewhere due to the freshness and the way the cut looks. Other than these flaws the commissary has had trouble restocking shelves on certain items that have been gone for quite some time. I do appreciate the commissary as a place to grab basic essentials from and for it being a more private place to shop but I can't get past some of the things that me and my family have witnessed. The staff are very kind and polite and usually always brighten my day. read more

VAFB commissary is solid. Pretty good produce, a nice deli, and the facility is clean. Mostly positive experiences w/ staff: 1) patient and friendly cashier helping my "forgive me, my wife normally does this" ass navigate self-checkout; 2) the stocker up to her elbows in Yoplait, cheerfully taking time out to direct my myopic ass to the pot stickers I had unknowingly stared at for 30 seconds w/out realizing it. However, I find the quality of the meat section to be marginal, and choose to buy my steaks and tri-tips (aka Central Coast ambrosia) off base. Also, there is one cashier that I understand has been on site for a lot of years, and her willingness to be pleasant to the customer must directly relate to the alignment of Jupiter to Mars, which ain't often . . . just so rude and dour. Regrettable. I've been a life-long commissary shopper, and even did my duty as an AF Brat, making a few bucks as a bagger. Huge fan of what the commissary system offers our nation's military, and keeping my fingers crossed the Congress does not remove this wonderful benefit. Cheers! RS read more

I find this commissary hit or miss. It's incredibly convenient for the simple fact we don't have to 15 Minutes to Lompoc or 25 min to Santa Maria to shop. Before you buy items like fruit cups and meat, try a membership at Costco for bulk item price deals. The produce is off and on. Definitely has improved over the past year. Overall prices just depend on what your regular items are. It does have a Boars Head Deli where you can purchase quality deli meats and it's a convenient location for a quick lunch option. Sushi is sold at the ready made sushi bar right at the front of the store. Great staff that works here too! read more

Fair. Selection of foods was alright. They need to hire more workers though. The bakery and the deli workers are one and the same and it wouldn't be so bad if the deli and bakery we're in the same area but they aren't. You have to ring a bell at the bakery to get a person from the deli to come over and most of the time they don't come to the bakery and you have to walk halfway through the store to tell the deli workers to assist you at the bakery. read more

Nice big commissary! I stopped by to grab a sandwich for lunch which was cheap and affordable. We went around 1130 so there wasn't much of a line at the deli when we arrived. It started picking up as it got closer to noon so go early to beat the rush. There was not much of a line to check out at that hour so we got through the line fast! Quick and convenient place to grab lunch. read more
