This place is literally the worst. I've run out of propane four times with our 500 gallon tank. And each time they assured me I am on a service plan. I recently switched to van unen miersma propane after having East Bay Propane(Suburban) for several years. After East Bay Propane was acquired by Suburban they went downhill on service and most importantly on price. Suburban jacked up my price from $2.99 to $5.00 /gallon. I neighbor recommended VM and their prices were competitive and I switched along with buying a new larger propane tank from them. Both of their service technicians I have met were professional, wore masks, and did excellent work. I was happy to switch to a local family owned business. read more

I often buy bulk propane for my motorhome. I've bought it locally at Flying J (usually a traffic hassle getting in and out) and at Van Unen Miersma Propane which in the past was at least competitively priced, as I recall. However, this day I pulled in to Van Unen Miersma Propane to fill up and was surprised at their outrageous price! They measure it by the gallon at their propane pump, but sell it by the size of the container. Mine is a large 25 gallon tank, built into the motorhome. They pumped on 12.4 gallons according to their gauge at the pump. At Flying J, that would have cost me $3.20 per gallon. But Van Unen Miersma Propane now charges by the container, so their crazy receipt read "20# bottle fill $18, and 30 gallon bottle fill $25". Huh? I was charged $43 for their absurd way of charging for the 12.4 gallons I bought. I finally figured out, later, that I paid Van Unen Miersma Propane $3.47 per gallon! Had I gone to Flying J, I would have paid $3.20 per gallon and avoided the bass-ackwards way Van Unen Miersma sells propane. I should have checked prices before leaving to fill up the tank, which I usually do, buy how would I compare these days when Van Unen Miersma Propane sells by the container and not the gallon?! When I asked the attendant what that equals per gallon, he said it comes to about $3 per gallon plus tax. It seems they wound their way pretty tightly around the English language to avoid simply telling me their per gallon price. I usually learn my lessons the hard way, and too often I learn them the hard way twice, but eventually I do learn. I now have learned that I won't be visiting Van Unen Miersma Propane again as long as they sell their propane in such a convoluted way! read more

We purchased a home that already had a propane tank on site serviced by Van Unen Miersma Propane. We are new to the country and had little knowledge of propane use, prices etc. This company automatically refills your tank when it gets low which we thought was great....only problem is, what if they fill it with so much your bill is $500+ a month? Well that was the case with us. Okay, so I call to make a payment and the rude girl ( she sounded Latina) on the phone asks me if I will be paying all of it and I tell her I can only pay half right now. It's the holidays, things are tight for everyone, I wasn't expecting a $500+ bill. She asks me when I will pay the rest and I tell her I will pay more in a week. She asks how much will I pay in a week...I tell her I'm not sure ( I'm at work and not trying to have all my business put on blast) she rudely tells me if I don't pay the balance by Friday they will come and put a lock on my tank. What? They have always been really nice... something has changed in their customer service. I was quite shocked at how she came at me. All of a sudden it seems corporate. First of all...it's not like I'm not paying you anything. Stop trying to threaten me. Put a lock on it. Better yet, why don't you come pick up your tank and I will find a company with better customer service. RUDE ASS. I will be looking for another propane company ASAP. read more

I am so sad to have to write this review but I am beyond frustrated with this company. Back at the end of December, I woke up in the middle of the night to a freezing house because the heater wasn't working. We checked batteries, reset, etc. Then my husband thought let me check the propane he came back and said it was empty, weird since they are supposed to be monitoring my tank. I call the after-hours number, it is 2:00 a.m., and a driver calls me and says well it's going to take really long for me to get there so I will just send your regular driver first thing tomorrow morning. Ok fine, get some extra blankets and deal for the next 4-5 hours. The driver comes out, he's great, says the monitor isn't working and installs a new one. I am left with a $728 invoice since the tank was empty. At this time, I did not have any amount due, my account was paid in full. Fast forward to today, I log in to make a payment on that $700 because I knew it was past due and then checked the meter online, it said it was being monitored but said I was only at 7%. I called the office immediately and informed them I was only at 7% and needed a delivery ASAP and she says sorry about that we usually schedule delivery when you reach 30%. I was told they wouldn't be in the area until Monday so if I run out, call the after-hour number. I called back and asked for a manager, I was told I was being transferred to dispatch manager, someone picked the phone up and hung up on me. I called back and was told now the call wasn't going through but she would have him call me back. I have been a customer since 2015. My tank ran out on a cold December night due to their equipment failure. Once again, I am now about to run out of propane. I wonder if this is because I had a past due balance? If so, good customer service would be to call me at 30% and say you need a delivery but you have a past due balance, can you make payment? I am not monitoring my tank, that is their job, I pay for the little monitor. For a business that represents on their website, they are "Customer Focused, Committed to Excellence" I certainly didn't experience that today. read more

We've been offered a payment plan or an extension on our bill in the past even though we did not need it because of an error on their end that left us without heat or gas in freezing temperatures. Had a family member pass so we called this time around to try and take advantage of that because our money was a little tied up. Was met by the rudest snobbiest woman who says she's in charge now under new ownership and that that's never been a thing lol. This tyrant made it seem as if we were problematic and couldn't afford our living expenses although our history of payments tells a different story. We paid that balance off in full even after being threatened to come home and find a lock on our tank if we didn't pay it off lol. This time around we noticed our tank is running low so we called to ask what was up. Come to find out now we have to call to have it serviced and we have to pay beforehand, under no foundation of this decision. We've never missed a payment. Have called once to see what our options could be lol. Was never told about this choice. So you mean to tell me that you were just gonna let the tank run out so we could find out about this? You were just gonna wait until then and have us scramble to get it serviced? Now this woman whom you can tell her family hates is being dodgy and won't get on the phone. Her underlings sound stressed out and as if they're running out of excuses and explanations for her avoidance. Say that that's probably all she's going to say without any rational explanation. Negative 10. DON'T Do It!! Because of all the fees they have. Don't let them give you a sales pitch at the beginning it sounded great but in the long run I have never had to pay so much. They charge for the regulator. Other companies don't. They charge to pick up the tank. I've been using propane for over 20 years and have never had the fees these guys charge. We are at fault in that we signed the papers. READ the CONTRACT!!!!!! I went back to the company I had before. I'd mention it but you'd think I was working for them. After 3 bad experiences at Kamps propane. I stopped at this place. The young ladys at the front desk were very helpful. they called for a tech to help me. the tech (Arturo) was extremely helpful. he explained to me that my old tanks were not safe and offered me a great deal for replacement tanks. I need to have one more tank replaced and they are getting my business from today on. Everyone there was very helpful and smart. I highly recommend this place to anyone that likes good helpful people working there. 5 stars plus. P.S. I have been a customer of Van Unen Miersma Propane for 17 years. About a year ago, one of their managers called me and asked me to switch out my 500 gallon tank with a 250 gallon tank because the 500 was a commercial tank and they could use it more effectively with a bigger customer. I had had the 500 gallon tank from the beginning of my service with them. I only filled up once a year because that amount of propane would get me through the entire year. Before agreeing to switch tanks I asked if they would guarantee that I would not run out of propane and I was told that they had remote monitors on the tanks and would make sure that I didn't run out of gas. It turned out that the owners son Ross, is the person who sets up and monitors the transmitters on the tanks. Because I was a once a year buyer, he decided that my monitor didn't need to be turned on. This resulted in our tank running out on a Friday night two weeks ago. I'm 78 years old and my lady friend is 69 years old. We don't DO cold weather very well because of our age and arthritis conditions. I called them and was able to get a delivery on Sunday by a very professional driver who filled the tank Sunday afternoon. When I called the company on Monday to find out why we ran out of gas, Ross admitted that he had dropped the ball, but gave me some lame excuses for why this happened. We had a natural gas line installed several years ago (at no charge) and when I told Ross that I would get it hooked up if they couldn't appropriately monitor our tank and keep us from running out of fuel. His response was to tell me that I should hook up to natural gas if it was available, so I did. They picked up my full tank and charged me $134.50 to get their tank off my property, and I learned that there is no prorated refund on the annual tank rental fee. Which I think is complete BS. The fees they charge for service or lack thereof are not in line with my definition of customer service, especially after 17 years of being a customer. I WOULD NOT recommend Van Unen Miersma Propane company to ANYONE after this experience with them. Customer loyalty should count for something, but it seems to only go one way. Avoid this company if you can. read more

This company has the absolute worst customer service. I had their propane service with no issues for 5 years. In October, my family was going through a lot with the health of my dad and I was traveling a lot and some of my bills had gone to the way side. My tank was filled at the end of November 2018 and I had received a bill in December which I didn't get until I was back from a holiday trip at the end of December. I had surgery on the 4th of January and that evening when I returned home I had no hot water and no heat from the heater. As it was the evening Van Unen was closed. I called the after hours and they informed me my account was "on-hold" and that they did not fill my tank due to this. They left me after just having surgery with two young kids in the house with no hot water and no heater in January for the whole weekend. And told me that I cannot pay until Monday as their offices are closed. They never called at any time to let me know that my account was on hold because it was 30 days past due. When Jerry called that following Monday, 1/7 he was not helpful at all and was very rude and informed me there was nothing he can do that day to get my tanked filled. Today the very rude receptionist called to collect my balance and let me know that they charge $134.50 to pick up their tank as I have now gone with another company. This company has no compassion and will leave you with no heat and no hot water without even a courtesy call to say "Did you forget to pay your bill?" I was more than willing to pay the balance on the 4th and now I can careless if they send me to collections as I do not want to give them a dime of my money. Horrible customer service! P.S. After their monitoring system failed on my propane tank & we replaced a water heater unnecessarily.. he took zero accountability, offered no apology or solution & instead called the plumber who replaced the water heater incompetent. Van Unen Propane Will fill your tank at the peak of winter (even if you don't need it and have asked them not to) then lock off your tank if you can't immediately pay their $1000 bill. They showed up to my house today to collect $850 for a fill they did 60 days ago and wouldn't take a $600 payment to avoid a lock off. Turned out, all of their gas was still in the tank unused from that last top off (so I didn't even really need that fill in the middle of winter when prices were $.50/gallon more than they are today). They said that they would be happy to take my $600 payment but they would still have to lock off the tank. That means they would have effectively prevented me from using gas that I paid for. No way! I told them to come get their tank off my property. They owe me now for the $70 annual tank lease I just paid them on. My advice, take your business elsewhere, Van Unen couldn't care less about their customers. After making a few calls to get a new tank elsewhere I found out I could get a new tank with the same amount of gas for less than half what they were trying to get from me. We have just recently switched to Natural Gas from Propane. We informed the Company that we would no longer need their service. It took them over 2 weeks to finally come and pick up the tank and then they charged me to pick up their OWN equipment. I was never told that there was going to be a charge and the original owners are the ones to set it up we just continued with the service. I had asked if a new customer wanted to have their service and I was told that they would waive the fee to install the tank, but I was charged to have them pick up THEIR equipment. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. No one has the authority to help and no one is ever around to talk with. Everyone from the front desk staff, to sales, to techs, to delivery drivers...its always a pleasure talking to them. Everyone is extremely helpful, extremely prompt l, and they simply get things done! Every person I have come in contact with goes above and beyond to not only address my concern but to show they care about me and my family. Their rates are reasonable, first year tank rental is free, and their fill service is top notch. I used to have horror stories with my last propane company. With Van Unen, I dont ever have to think about the level of my tank. They take care of that for me! I'm truly glad I switched. So far I have worked with Tonya, Ryan, a hand full of delivery and service guys and they have all been awesome. Some how Van Unen Miersma built an awesome team with truly amazing people. At first, they will almost bend over backwards, but don't. Only had them for a couple of years and I'm glad to be moving and not have to deal with them. That is if you can ever talk to anybody. I have left messages with their call service and never received a call back, days later even. They say they will send someone out and they never show. Van Unen Propane.... buyer beware. There are rental tank fees that you must pay yearly. Should you have your tank removed, there is a fee they are going to charge you to remove the tank! So lets say you decide to switch to someone who is cheaper or switch to natural gas..... beware, you are going to have to pay to have the tank removed. God forbid the rental fee take care of that... Having worked for other propane companies in the area.... it is just ridiculous. I hope that this may help someone take a good look at ANY gas provider before switching or considering their services. They have a great budget plan, they monitor your tank remotely and provide timely service, and they keep their prices competitive. We have never had an equipment or service issue.
