Vallier Bistro is a very nice restaurant that punches above its weight. It's beautiful inside and, weather permitting, would be great outside too. We chose to be inside and were seated immediately at one of the windows without reservation for this late lunch. Our concierge recommended Vallier and she was on point with the rec. I ordered their cucumber margarita and encourage Vallier to incorporate mezcal into their offerings for an even better margarita. The tequila marg was still very good and quite refreshing. Our server, Max, was doing his best to respond to all our questions and requests. I ordered the poutine with duck confit. We split a great Caesars salad, punctuated with anchovies and grated cheese. It was fresh and very good! This was my first time having poutine and I was not disappointed. For $46 CAD, this was a great value and perhaps the best value of anything I experienced in Montreal while attending the Jazz Fest. I can well imagine this would be best during the cold of winter, because this will stick to your ribs and you will not need to eat for another eighteen hours. The components were good individually: crispy fries with fluffy interior, savory gravy, rich cheese curds, and crisp duck leg that pops with savory flavor matching the gravy. You will be challenged to eat it all in one seating. That confit remains in my culinary memory. It all comes together nicely and the ensemble of flavors and textures is very satisfying and many would find this great comfort food. At $85 CAD and change, this was a great value and leaves one with great satisfaction in a beautiful bistro. It is one of those places that delivers above its weight and will have you return. We had dinner here our last night in Montreal and it was an excellent end to our visit. We started with some cocktails and the salmon tartare. I had Le Saint Vallier which was sweeter than what I usually order but excellent and also beautiful.The salmon was delicious and a nice shareable starter. For my entree I had the Coquille Saint Laurent which was delicious. The scallops, shrimp and clams were all cooked perfectly and very flavorful. The potatoes were creamy and perfect and the presentation of the dish was beautiful. For dessert, I had the maple pudding which was similar to a really good sticky toffee pudding; it was delicious. Service was excellent and the courses were served at a leisurely pace giving time to relax and enjoy each course. The dining room is nicely decorated and feels classy but casual. It was so good, I enjoyed my food so much I failed to take any pictures. The room is so cozy with lots of plants all around. I had the escargot which was so cheesy! Different than I've had it anywhere else. It would have been nice to have more bread than the two little pieces but at least there were the two pieces. My main was seafood risotto, so divine. Close to old Montreal with the same street repairs and the lack of parking, we decided anyway to go to Vallier. My first visit actualy. The decor is warm and the atmosphere was great when we entred but it got very loud when it got full and when the DJ, yes a DJ in the restaurant started to crank the music up. We sat at the bar. always nice to sit where you can see the action and interact with the bartender who also serves you food. Admittedly our second choice, Vallier ended up being a solid option for a spontaneous dinner for 10 people. They were quickly able to accommodate us around 19:30 on a Sunday night. The menu was short, but there was something for everyone. The winners at the table were the salmon and burger, though the fries were a bit soggy. A small bite of the poutine was also tasty but a little soggier than I expected. The gnocchi was ok, a bit more dense than I usually like it. I was there around 13h with a colleague of mine. We ordered a bacon & guinness cheddar cheeseburger sriracha fried onions & horseradish aioli, and a beef tartare, that was average. So, the mushroom soup du jour was fan-freakin-tastic. It was topped with nuts. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Seriously? The atmosphere was trendy, but not pretentious. I ordered the seared white tuna entree... which was not in fact, seared but rather well done. It was accompanied by toasted sesame seeds, pomegranite seeds, orange and many unidentifiable Canadian veggies...something I was told was similar to spinach and a rhubarb-like item, as well. Our server was slow and unable to translate some of the items on the menu...but I feel she meant well. Many items on the table had an antique feel, but not in a good way. The glasses were the same I grew up with in the 80's -- quite ugly actually. The steak knife had a wooden handle and looked as if it quite possibly held bacteria for as long as the glass had been around. My favourite thing on their menu is their sheppard's pie with duck meat and their soup is always very fresh and rich. The restaurant is nicely decorated and has an antique modern vibe which we love. It's been over a year since my last visit to Montreal, and my visit to Vallier. My husband and I were staying in the area again and decided to try it again. This time, we decided to avoid the burgers. I had the duck confit shepherd's pie, which was quite good -- served in a little cast iron skillet, it comes fresh out of the oven. The duck was a little bit dry, but on the whole the dish was really good. My husband's strip loin was also quite good: well-marinated in lime and smoky spices. The restaurant was also happy to sub the potatoes for extra salad since he's keeping on the Paleo diet these days; the salad was nice and lightly dressed. Service was pretty good. I still find the prices to be quite high for the quality of food -- there are other restaurants in the area that are better in the price range -- but for casual comfort food, Vallier does the trick pretty well. read more

I came here in the beginning of January, wandering the empty evening streets of Montreal when most restaurants shut down after the holiday busyness. Vallier was quite alluring given that it was the only lit up venue in the area - you can imagine how warming the sight of the glow in the crisp cold air would be. The menu isn't huge and there weren't too many adventurous items, so my choices were basically made for me - bone marrow appetizer and braised lamb shoulder stew for my main. They were good enough although the bone marrow had an odd smell to it and I'm not sure if I was even eating it right (probably one of those things where there's not a right way to eat it). I was actually surprised that the waiter didn't check up very often and did not try to offer me a dessert. I had to basically beg for a coffee after the meal before I got my check.
