A week before our trip to Maui I had a question about changing into swimsuits for our scheduled Road to Hana tour and sent an email to the company. I received a reply within 30 minutes. The answer was Yes, one can change into swimsuits during lunch before the black sand beach visit and then change out of them at a stop after the waterfall stop to be dry for the ride back to the hotels. A few days before our tour I received an email confirmation that included other useful information, such as bring along swimwear, towels, water shoes and a light jacket for the air conditioned van. I had not considered the A/C and I'm always cold, so that is a very welcome heads-up. On the day of our tour we received texts that the driver was on his way. Pretty close to the scheduled meeting time the van pulled up to our resort. The van was spacious with huge windows. Our tour was full with all 12 passenger seats occupied. Our driver/guide was Travis. He was born and raised in Hana and was a wealth of knowledge about Hana, Maui, and Hawaii. He seemed to be related to all the locals he passed on the road. There was not dull moment. Among the stops along the way were Maui Tropical Plantation for breakfast, Auntie Sandy's Banana Bread stand for those that wished to purchase, Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach, also with a lava tube and a blow hole), Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside Park (usually calm enough to swim but the falls were roaring due to rain earlier in the day), and Ho'okipa Beach with turtles on the beach. Travis was an excellent driver and guide. We got great value from the cost of the excursion. One minor thing did bother us. We are Jewish and were uncomfortable during the praising Jesus sing-along. Regardless, we recommend this tour and especially Travis as a guide. read more

If you want to go to road to Hana and are afraid to drive yourself this is the perfect tour to go with. Here are some notable reasons I enjoyed it. 1. 12 person max tour but we only had a group of 7. 2. Seats are very comfortable with plenty of leg room. 3. Includes a legit breakfast and lunch. Breakfast was light pastry, fruit and juice. Lunch was chicken/tofu buffet style so it was plentiful. 4. Hits the important spots for pictures. 5. Driver drove with the local etiquette and taught us a lot about the history as well as secret spots. Would I say it's worth it? Absolutely. You save on gas, you can sleep on the long 50 mile+ drive. You are taken care of by a local of the Island. Also you get picked up straight from the hotel. We had Paula as our tour guide, apparently the only female and she was awesome and very knowledgeable. She took care of us and dropped us off safely. What a great way to spend 10 hours. Note I used a travel booking site and got 10% off which is kind of a chunk ($50 or so off for two people). I had a great time on the Road to Hana tour with Travis! This is my second time touring this road, but I would have to say, let someone else drive you so you can enjoy the scenery. I tried to tour this road over 20 years ago, but I will have to say, you'll see and do more when you are driven by a local. Our tour guide, Travis, was knowledgeable, engaging, honest, and fun. He made sure to talk to everyone (we're not getting bored while on the drive), educated us with vast information (culture, history, language, plant identification, and is a very skillful driver since he grew up in the area. I have no complaints about the food. If my young picky eater ate the food, then it was solid. For breakfast, you are provided with coffee, fruit, and light pastry and the Maui Plantation cafe. For lunch, your given huli hula chicken with salad. We were given extra time on our drive back to enjoy a black sand beach and swim in a waterfall. Overall, I recommend this tour! read more

The road to Hana is obviously filled with lots of hairpin turns and one lane bridges. How you get there the best way possible is Valley Isle Tours! Spencer provided insights all along the way, providing safety-minded recommendations at each stopping point, and was very conscious of his passengers' restroom needs throughout the trip. For my husband's 50th birthday, I took him on the Haleakalā Sunrise Tour on September 8th. It was phenomenal! My husband and I took the road to Hana bus tour and let's just say it far exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide Travis was the perfect balance of knowledgeable, humorous, fun, and safe. We were provided food and taken to many wonderful spots to eat food, take pictures, and swim. There were also a few local shops we stopped by, however we were never forced to buy anything. The black sand beach and waterfalls were my favorite. It's always a bit awkward having to interact with strangers for twelve hours straight, but Travis did a great job of breaking the ice between us. Met up with Everet and Kaipo at 2am to start our journey to see the sunrise at Haleakala! You do have time to catch a few z's on both the ride up and back. Anyway these guys get you there early to get the best spot in the house and take care of you like you are their baby! Literally! They bundled each and every one of us up in a parka because it is bone chilling cold up there! Honestly I don't know if I could have been out there the hour and a half that I was without it! We were really excited about our Road to Hana tour with Valley Isle Excursions after seeing so many great reviews, but unfortunately, our experience was nothing like what others seem to describe. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the route itself is incredible, but the entire day was overshadowed by an extremely overbearing guide. From the moment the trip began, the commentary never stopped. It felt less like a guided tour and more like being stuck in a 12-hour monologue. There was very little space to relax, enjoy the views, or simply take in the moment without being talked at or prompted to respond. The guide repeatedly brought up personal struggles and hardships in a way that made the group uncomfortable. It felt more like we were being guilt-tripped than welcomed. The energy quickly became tense and awkward, and unfortunately, it stayed that way for most of the trip. There were also far too many rules, most of which were delivered in a controlling tone. What started as "just a few" quickly turned into a long list of do's and don'ts. No sleeping, no touching certain things, no sitting where you prefer, no opting out of interactions. If you didn't respond with enthusiasm or participate the way the guide wanted, you risked being publicly called out or made to feel uncomfortable. At some point it just became exhausting. The vibe on the bus was more "classroom with a strict substitute teacher" than "enjoyable tour in paradise." Most of us were clearly not into the forced singalongs or the pressure to act impressed. At one point, the guide even mentioned past bad reviews and how they knew who had written them, which was unsettling and honestly discourages honest feedback. It created an environment where it felt safer to stay silent than speak up or express how we were feeling. The Road to Hana is stunning and absolutely worth experiencing, but I would think twice before booking this tour again. I recommend looking for an option that allows more freedom to enjoy the day on your own terms, without feeling like you're being micromanaged from start to finish. read more

Driver/tour guide Travis is AMAZING! Travis grew up in Hana, and was very knowledgable about the area and was phenomenal driving on those curvy roads getting to Hana. I would not under any circumstance recommend anyone trying to drive those roads unless you're experienced on them! We had looked around a few different Maui excursion companies, and spoke to a few and got the best vibes off of Valley Isle- and took into account the Yelp reviews as well. Prices were great for the full day Road to Hana tour - be sure to check Valley Isle's website for any promotions they may be offering at the time! We paid $264.99/per person, which includes pick-up/drop-off from the hotel, a continental breakfast, and hot lunch. My husband and I were picked up by Travis first. Pick-ups start around 7 AM at your hotel. Travis was really nice and welcoming from the time we entered the bus, and then we picked up the rest of the group. We started our tour off Hana Highway at a restaurant for continental breakfast (see photo in my review), which had a few pastries, fruit (most if not all which was grown on site at the restaurant), and also fresh juice and coffee. Coffee beans were also grown on site which was an additional nice cool touch! We had about 15 minutes for breakfast before starting the tour. We stopped at several places for photos along the way, and for periodic restroom breaks because it is a very long tour throughout the day! We also stopped at a few spots for food including the acclaimed Aunty Sandy's for banana bread and also at the Halfway to Hana spot on the way back from Shave Ice. These spots were not paid for by the tour, but all spots were very affordable (all items less than $10). We never felt pressured to buy anything, but we took part in it as you want to make sure to have energy for the whole tour! :) We stopped in Hana at a spot for lunch, which included a green salad, macaroni salad, and Huli Huli chicken. All food was served buffet style and everything was outstanding! On the way back, we stopped at the black sand beach to swim, followed by a swim at a local waterfall. We were dropped back at our hotel I think between 6:30-7, so it is a long day, but you really get to know your driver, and the people on the tour, so you all feel like a family at the end. read more

Had a wonderful experience on the Haleakala tour! They pick you up from the airport and give you a fleece lined poncho at the top! Even with my winter jacket, the poncho was much appreciated. They get you up to the National Park super early so if it's clear, star gazing is incredible and you get a front row view for the sunrise! Breakfast to follow was excellent as well! read more

This was the best part of Maui! I would highly recommend doing a guided tour of the Road to Hana (and NOT drive it yourself). I would also highly recommend this company. Our tour guide, Travis, was AWESOME. I do not think we could have gotten a better guide. Travis is really what made this tour what it is and it would not have been the same without him. You start out with a simple continental breakfast consisting of a couple small pastries and fresh fruit. The box lunch provided (different lunch than usual I believe due to COVID) was not great. Both the turkey and veggie sandwiches were dry and bland. However, we stopped at so many places to eat along the way that I was too full to even eat much of the boxed lunch. We stopped for banana bread (also got a fresh fruit smoothie there), shave ice (multiple times), and huli huli chicken. The huli huli chicken was bomb and possibly one of the best chickens I've had. (Maybe because free range chickens run around the whole island so it can't get much fresher than that). Water activities included the black sand beach and swimming in a waterfall pool. These were the best parts of the tour! You will have time to change into and out of your swimsuit. There is not too much hiking or walking, so you could wear shorts, dress, sandals, etc for the majority of the tour. Also the van was very nice, seemed new and clean. Seats were comfortable. AC was at a good temperature (although I did get a bit cold and wore my cardigan). All in all, if you're in Maui make sure you do this Road to Hana tour and request Travis as your guide! read more

Being in Maui for the first time, I, like many of you, made sure to google all the must do things on the island. I saw the road to hana on several must do lists. After reading up on the travel and all it's curves, bridges and one way lanes, I decided to book a tour as opposed to driving it. I am so glad I did. Our tour guide was Yvonne, and she was super amazing. Right when she picked us up at the hotel, she was bubbly and super friendly. She had flowers ready for me and my mom to place on our ears as we sat back and enjoyed the scenic ride. She was so knowledgeable about the history of Maui, and the history of Hana. Best part was that she was an incredibly safe driver, and feeling that safe over-looking a cliff allowed me to just sit back and take in the beauty and snap lots of pics. I loved all our stops, (waterfalls, black sand beach, delicious local shops), and felt the amount of stops was just right. If you are looking for a fully active day of hiking and swimming at all the falls, then maybe you're better off on another tour, or driving yourself. But in my situation, I was traveling with 2 elderly parents, (mid 60's) who are use to mild city hikes every once in a while, (being from LA). They are not as outdoorsy as others and definitely not use to hiking up or down hills, so for us, this tour was perfect. The van was spacious and comfortable with huge windows to see all the pretty views. Yvonne was the best tour guide ever. She was so lively and informative the whole tour. Wow! What a great excursion company!!! So glad we did this ultimate road to Hana. For those of you who may know, this is a very dangerous road with 54 one road bridges and hundreds of twists and turns, but so worth it. Seeing the natural beauty of the drive and the town of Hana itself was amazing. We got to travel the road and back, shop for plenty of souvenirs, and help support the local businesses in addition to an amazing delicious Hawaiian lunch and some swimming! Our tour guide, Travis, was so amazing! He was a local of Hana and was the best tour guide. Having him share the beautiful cultural aspects of the island was so awesome. You can tell he really knows the roads and make sure we had not only an enjoyable, but safe journey as well! We did the sunrise trip to the crater edge. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I am glad I did not drive myself. Valley Isle gave us a confirmation phone call about a half hour before pickup at our timeshare. Abe and Alex are experienced drivers and made the trip more fun. My family of three had a great time with Valley Isle Excursions and our driver, Paula. Hubby and I have done a tour to Hana, but it was our daughter's first time. Paula treated our 9-year old like a princess. She was an excellent driver and really knew her Hawaiian and Hana history. I learned so much on the trip! She really prides herself on the relationships she builds with the people working at our stops-you can tell she's respected. We started with a yummy breakfast at a gorgeous farm. We, my wife, son, and I, booked the road to Hana tour and we had Travis as our guide. Travis was awesome, he quickly learned the names of every tourist (12) on the trip. He pointed out every waterfall( WaterFall!!, he made us sing every time we passed one) Aside from pointing out every type of plant, flower and fruit on the trip, he also gave the group an amazing oral history lesson regarding the true history of Hawaii and her people. We made stops at the black sand beach, Ho'okipa beach (giant sea turtle beach) and a waterfall that I jumped from, pretty awesome. What I took away from that trip, and what I think Travis wanted us to understand, is that the native Hawaiian people are what make those islands special, we are their guests. A must do day trip. Definitely recommend using a tour bus if you're going to take this drive. Just kick back, relax, and leave the driving to the pros while they drop knowledge on you along the way. Our guide, Charleston, was funny, and knowledgeable of the culture and history of the Islands, and clearly passionate of the Hawaiian people. Charleston picked us up right on time at our hotel. The tour van was a little old and didn't have charging connections for phones, but it had tons of leg room and comfortable seats. As we started out, he ran through the day's itinerary and gave us maps with extra details on what to expect. We kicked off the day with continental breakfast at a cool little farm. Stopped off at a place for banana bread later in the day (delish!). And then topped it off with a quick lunch before making our way back.We saw waterfalls, black sand beaches, and turtles. And loads of gorgeous landscapes. We'd choose this company again if we were to do this trip again. read more

I'm grateful that was the case because he is AMAZING!!! We learned so much about the beautiful island of Maui and its people thanks to him. We also got to try his auntie's famous banana bread! Yvonne grew up in Maui and has a wealth of knowledge and beams with pride for her community and it showed; she was respectful of the landscape the animals and everyone we encountered along the way. Tour: Road to Hana, because why drive it and and not enjoy it with a local that knows their stuff, the terrain and where to stop?! Makes no sense for a first timer in my opinion or even a second time... it's a crazy twisty and windy drive you'll miss so much just trying not to get killed or drive into someone of something Tour guide: Yvonne was super friendly, knowledgeable, fun, professional, accommodating and just an awesome tour guide. She knew so much about so much and she should she grew up here, other than talking story about the island she also shared cool things about herself, really made you feel like ohana! Tour bus: Spacious, no bad seat, if you're on the left or right side it doesn't matter you'll be able to see both sides of the road to Hana going there and coming back. Nice clean seats, windows huge so you don't miss a thing, AC cuz it gets hot, plugs for your phone cuz you'll take lots of photos, seat belts cuz some of us need em. The rest: This was by far the best experience and glad we took a tour, Yvonne was amazing and super sweet you felt like you had a friend talking you down the road, she knew the locals so each stop was like meeting friends of a friend... from the banana bread to the ginger soda, the huge cookies, the black sand beach, to the ponds this was the best tour ever! We will definitely return and request her and recommend the same to all who come and want to experience the road to Hana. The company has excellent service and some parts of the tours are not available due to safety reasons but really nothing short of amazing... the turtles and chocolate farm stop were also nice additions to this trip. The tour bus was fine. The tour was ok. The driver was good. But god damn the other passengers were annoying. Everyone was great except one old lady that sat in the front seat and talked none stop. Even while our guide was talking she'd try to finish his sentence when he wasn't asking anyone for input. Would of been nice if the guide ask people not to talk while he was talking. The stops were ok. But it was obvious the driver stopped at the stands where he k es the people and got free food as we stopped. There were other places I wished we stopped but everywhere we stopped minus the water fall and black sand beach were stops that had something for sale. The worst was the lunch stop. The driver said we could wait on the porch till lunch was ready and talk story with the lady there. So I envisioned a porch with seating and a relaxing break. Nope it was a tiny dirty space that they crammed two buses of people into to shop her "handmade" jewelry. Every stop was basically "exit though a gift shop". The much was disappointing. No options it was packed on the bus apparently and you got what you got. I would of been happier stopping and ordering food for myself. My child ate nothing the whole trip. Disappointed we didn't stop for the botanic garden or more places to walk and explore nature a bit. The guide was ok her was nice enough and informative but my son hated the whole experience because he kept picking on him to answer questions or talk when he's super shy introvert so the more the guide tried to talk to him the more he shut down and tuned out. The bus was hot. The breakfast location was beautiful but the muffin and sone were dry and fruit was meh. Over all we had a decent time, I just don't think it was worth the cost. If it was maybe half the price we paid I'd of loved it and suggest it to others. But at the price point it is I think it's kinda scammy that we really only stoped at shops read more

First of all - Travis made the whole trip! A tour like this is made (or not) by your guide and we truly had THE best one! He IS a local - born and raised IN Hana! I think the entire population of Hana (minus Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson) he is directly related to! With 33 aunts and uncles and hundreds of cousins, we said hi to everyone! He was so knowledgeable and funny!! Everything he showed us was beautiful and so much that was "just on the way" that he took time to point out! Im sure the "haole" drivers learn a lot, but a native from Hana, we'll, he has the best historical, cultural knowledge!! And it just seems to mean more!! Pre-covid, while in Maui, we decided we needed to go to the Haleakala summit and watch the sun rise. Hotel concierge arranged a tour for us through Valley Isle Excursions. Our hotel told us to be ready at 3:30am, because the tour company would pick us up at our hotel at that time. Unfortunately, the actual pick-up time was 2:30am and we had to scramble to get out to the shuttle. Fortunately, the shuttle waited for us. Shuttle takes you to a restaurant for a pre-dawn continental breakfast. Yeah, I wasn't feeling hungry at 3am. Next up, we all boarded the shuttle to make the drive up to the Haleakala summit. We were the second group to arrive at the top and our guide told us to get up front right away to insure we had a view. The only problem with that is the wind will be whipping you being in the front. Sooo thankful for the stadium blankets that the tour provides. It was Very Cold. I pretty much turned into a turtle in my stadium blanket. Was the sunrise beautiful? Absolutely. Amazing. I eventually had to head back to the shuttle a bit early from my teeth chattering and they had Hot Chocolate waiting for us. Score! Now that the sun is up, you can see the sights as you drive down Haleakala National Park and your guide will provide you history lessons with a stop at the visitor center. Once we arrived back to the restaurant, they offered up a buffet brunch. Wasn't interested in that, so that's the only reason for my 4 stars. I would have preferred a cappuccino and freshly baked croissant. read more

We did the Road to Hana tour today with Charleston. The whole day exceeded our expectations. The tour bus was comfortable, the provided drinks and food were a nice touch. The drive on the difficult road was comfortable. We felt safe and were able to enjoy the breathtaking views without thinking about the dangerous road and other drivers. But the best part of the tour was Charleston. He is one of a kind. The young man is full of knowledge about Hawaiian culture, agriculture and the Road to Hana. He is polite, kind and patient with everyone. We were ohana from the moment we stepped on the bus. If you want the best tour on the island, request Charleston. read more

This is for the Haleakalā sunrise tour. We drove to the early breakfast place, Poi By The Pound where we snacked on coffee, fresh cut fruits, and pastries :) Then we went straight to the summit. The drive was comfortable. It wasn't long at all. They got us nice spots to watch the sunset. Brilliant! When we got back to the vehicle there was hot beverages waiting for us. While coming down we stopped at a couple of spots. The surprise one was the echo one ;) Our o'hana now- Tony and Hector- have us lots of trivia and kept us entertained. Very cheerful and warm people. We got our 'aloha' in abundance from these guys. Definitely recommend :) Sunrise photos are on my camera so sharing the twilight ones. read more

We had a wonderful time on our Haleakala sunrise tour. There was great communication from the team about pick up in the days leading up to our tour and the morning of. We enjoyed having Billy as our driver and tour guide. He was very friendly & informative. He gave recommendations on different types of fish to eat while we are on island and happily took pictures for the different groups during one of the stops. He truly enjoys his job. We also appreciate that you provided wind ponchos as it was very windy the morning we went and ginger candy for the windy road trip. The location for breakfast was very beautiful. We definitely would recommend you to others who are planning a visit & want to go to Haleakala. read more

Uncle Joe was top notch! His knowledge about the land and plants, history of Maui and the islands were incomprehensible. He went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. I actually went to do it again so I can make sure I soak it all in. I did the tour with Valley Isle a few years back and again last year (a different company) and Valley Isle is the preferred experience and this one confirmed it. Excellent service all around. We did the Hana road tour and the Haleakala sunrise tour. Super comfortable rides with fun and knowledgeable guides. Hana tour: I was worried they would just rush us from one stop to the next. But they tried to give us as much quality time as possible at each stop - especially the black sand beach - which I really appreciated. Our guide, Junior, was a really funny guy. He kept us entertained throughout the day with fun stories from his life and experiences. Lunch was excellent as well. They also had plenty of drinks on board the bus. Its a 10 hour trip so brace yourselves. We didn't feel bored or tired at all though. If you could do only one tour in Maui, definitely do this one. Sunrise tour: We got an early morning snack before the tour and then a buffet breakfast after the tour as well. They also provided hot chocolate after the sunrise on the bus to warm us up. It gets extremely cold up there, so they even provided blankets for everyone. It's not enough though so definitely bundle up. Tip: For the Hana tour, you can request to be the first ones to be picked up. That way you get to pick the best seats. But all the seats have a pretty good view any way so its not a big deal. Sit on the right of the bus if you want a clear view of the waterfalls. The left side has a nicer view of the valley and rainforest. read more
