On the morning of our scheduled tour on the Road to Hana, it was pouring rain but we decided to go anyway. We met up with our guide, Mike and from there on we had the most incredible, memorable experience anyone could have on the Road to Hana. As we started on the trip, the rain stopped and we were literally one of the only cars on the road. Mike stopped many times to pick fruit for us to try, was extremely knowledgeable about every part of the trip, knew just about everyone along the way and treated us like royalty as his guests. We learned, we laughed, we joked and we had the time of our life thanks to him. We swam under a beautiful waterfall and had a fantastic meal at Hana followed up with fresh fruit from the land. Booked the waterfall Hike and was not disappointed. My two sons 17 and 16 loved it. The hike was not too difficult especially for them. I did stop when we got to the falls and there was a ladder strapped to a small Cliff you have to navigate, and let them finish. I'm 49 and know my limitations. Over all it was great. Christian does have quite a bit of Hawaiian history in his head and is happy to share. Price is a bit steep but we would never have found that spot without a guide read more

I had a hard time finding many recent reviews for this Epic Maui Hikes, and I would like people to know what they are signing up for. I did the "4 hour jungle Maui waterfall hike" with my partner - $200 per person. The 3 stars don't have much to do with our tour guide, but rather details that didn't go well. I'll start with the good stuff. Our guide was friendly and personable. They were impressively nimble, strong, and knowledgeable about many plants and trees. It was their first time leading this hike, and there's room for improvement, but with a little bit of coaching, I'm sure they can grow into an even more awesome tour guide. Nobody else happened to book the time slot with us, so we essentially got a private tour. The waterfalls we visited were stunning, and not too crowded, but not empty. It's worth noting that the trail seems like the kind of spot where you should be concerned about flash flooding, though our guide didn't mention it. We went all the way to the last big waterfall, which was a gorgeous and thrilling journey, and wouldn't have been able to get as far as we did without our guide. There was a beautiful bamboo forest, swimming, rock climbing, rock scrambling, cliff diving - lots of memorable activities that you'd be hard-pressed to find all in one place like this. Unfortunately, there were a few significant things that made us feel uneasy, or made us feel it wasn't worth the full cost. 1. The entrance of the trail is very clearly marked with a "no trespassing" sign (which other tourists were ignoring). A passerby in a car yelled to us out their window saying that we're trespassing. But we ignored both and entered the trail. This was an uncomfortable start to the hike because we felt like we weren't supposed to be there. Not being from the area and wanting to be a respectful tourist, I would want to understand more about the signage and the interaction. What is the contention? Should we not be hiking here? Is it private property? We couldn't have done our research ahead of time since the tour description doesn't include the trail name. I'm not sure if this company will switch up the trails over time, but we went to the Na'ili'ili Haele trail. After doing some reading online, it sounds like this trail is officially closed, but tourists and guide companies ignore the "no trespassing" signs because there are no real repercussions. Still leaves me with a weird feeling, and I'd want others to know. 2. The instructions email said to meet 15 minutes before start time, and that's when we arrived, yet our guide was about 10 minutes late and didn't give us a heads up about it. Not a professional first impression. 3. The hike is marketed as 4 hours (actually the confirmation email says 4-5), but ours barely ran 3 hours long (~2:45pm-6pm). I would have expected something at least 4 hours, since that's what we paid for. 4. Our guide either didn't know how to use a GoPro, or the one they had was broken, so we didn't get any GoPro footage as marketed. Our guide did their best to take photos using their phone, but it really isn't the same since GoPros are waterproof and phones aren't. I really wish we had just brought our own phones in waterproof cases, but we weren't given any guidance about that. Overall, while the hike itself is certainly memorable and unique, the tour experience just didn't feel worth the full price that we paid, given that these issues are all entirely within the company's control. read more

Giving this a 5-star because of our guide Zak. He was fun, entertaining, had a lot of island knowledge and history. Pros: you get to see crazy jungle, waterfalls, plant life, some wild life... Cons: it's not really a hike. It's more of a 3hr scenic car ride with some nice stops. I was expecting to go on a real hike, but I also understand that the terrain doesn't really lend for that. What an amazing experience! We felt we saw a part of Maui that most do not on the Jungle Waterfall Hike. Stunning scenery and beautiful waterfalls. Noah our guide was fantastic and had huge enthusiasm for his job and the area. My husband, son and I all enjoyed it immensely. Note that it was in the wilderness and mildly strenuous. As my son said - it's not a corporate tour! There was mud and we did a lot of scrambling over rocks and ducking under some fallen bamboo. Prepare to get dirty and wear good shoes - ideally those that can go in water. We went in the afternoon, and Noah told us the water was generally warmer (it was) and we had no bugs. Traffic up and back on the Hana Highway was virtually nonexistent at this time. The reward of seeing this part of Maui, swimming in the pools, and doing some rope swings and low cliff jumping was so worth it! read more

Woooowwww. So much fun. I was never a hiker and dismissed it right away whenever it came up but went on two already in three days! I'm out of shape but the adrenaline had me going throughout the entire hike and I made sure to do all the jumps since I didn't want to have any regrets. To be honest, I would not have been able to do any of these awesome hikes without their help. They were encouraging, knew all the awesome spots where no one knew about, and made sure my clumsy self came back safe. They were also very friendly and funny! Wonderful way to do the Road to Hana without doing the Road to Hana. Met in Paia, drove 20-25 minutes towards Hana. Got a good flavor for the drive without spending the whole day on a winding road with white knuckle turns. Got to the hiking spot. Had everything we needed. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the various plants. Got to see 3 amazing waterfalls. Swam in all 3, jumped off the last one. It was magical. The hike was tricky from a footing perspective. I'm not an incredibly active person and found it pleasant and no problem. They took photos and video of everything from their GoPro and gave us the memory card and adapter at the end of the trip. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to do a last minute adventurous hike. We called around 7pm the evening before and was lucky enough to find Epic Maui Hikes that was able to accommodate us at a very short notice. Amira was extremely pleasant and helpful with the booking. The next morning, we went on the jungle waterfall adventure with Michael, whom was nothing but amazing. He is patient, experienced, energetic, and truly loves what he does. We hiked through 5 waterfalls and learned so much about Maui through our 4 hour experience. My bf is terrified of the water but Michael made the experience so comforting that he even jumped off two waterfalls! At the end of our trip, Michael took us to Hookipa Beach where turtles typically come on shore to sunbathe. Unfortunately, the waves were unusually strong that day and none of the turtles came on shore. Michael went out of his way to drive us up and down the beach to find the turtles knowing that I really wanted to see them! Our experience would not have been the same without Michael. There are moments in your life that truly change you and these hikes did just that. If you're looking to get away from the typical touristy spots and want to see the true beauty of Maui I highly recommend booking a hike with this company. Each of the guides are not only incredibly knowledgeable about the land and ocean but they truly want to share with you why they love the island so much. Don't worry if you aren't super fit, I never hiked, snorkeled or swam much until this trip and I was fine. You just need to want adventure. I went on 5 hikes, its a lot but I wanted to see as much of the island as possible. I had the pleasure of getting to know Sean, Matt, and Christine. They were all so patient with me since all of these hikes were completely out of my comfort zone. Even though I just met them they were so easy to talk to and trust. Christine even got me to jump off a small cliff into the water, after a 10 min freak out at the top (Do it! You won't regret it). If you aren't used to doing any of this then yes, it will be a little challenging but the reward is priceless. I spent 2 weeks on Maui and did a bunch of the group tours but the private hikes were by far the best and most beautiful days I had on the island. This was one of the big highlights of our trip. We had a great hike off the beaten track - the entrance to our hike was unmarked. We ventured on a path I probably wouldn't have started on my own, and we were rewarded with rushing streams and spectacular waterfalls. It was truly paradise. My gf and I booked the Epic Maui Hike tour with Michael. We first called the Epic Maui Hike before booking because we had a few questions. We spoke with Amira whom answered all of our questions. Luckily for us there was a cancellation from another party the next day and they were able to book is the Bamboo Jungle Waterfall Hike with Michael. We met him at a public parking lot before the road to Hana. Tip: make sure you book a early hike so you can enjoy the waterfalls peacefully all by yourselves. Btw, this is a personal hike guide, if you are by yourself I believe there is a solo fee charge. Michael was an awesome guide, he was super laid back, gave us tips along the way, and was always making sure we felt comfortable. He drives you from the parking lot to the top where the entrance to the bamboo jungle, (just off the road). First thing we did was check out the awesome rainbow eucalyptus tree (photo opportunity) then he took us to the grass trampoline (another photo opp). Then your epic hike begins! I warned Michael that I cannot swim, am terrified of water, and no way jumping into the waterfall. He didn't pressure me at all, and just mentioned he brought me a life jacket just in case. He also is a registered nurse, cpr certified, and a life guard for over five years. With that said we journeyed into the bamboo forest. He took us through all five waterfalls. I'm not sure how he did it but he also convinced me to jump not once but two times into the waterfall. I used the life jacket, and he was waiting at the bottom of he jump reassuring that I wouldn't be under water for more than 5 seconds. Because of his patience and some minor convincing I felt comfortable enough to jump! Epic Epic Epic! This was the most memorable part of the trip and we have Michael from Epic Maui Hike to thank for this. Don't miss out on this once in the life time experience. Sean gave the most epic tour of the road to Hana for my friend and I, a day that we will remember forever! We asked for an adventurous experience and he certainly provided. There was no pressure to do something we weren't comfortable with, but we couldn't resist whatever it took to explore the most stunning waterfalls, hidden mermaid pools and jumping off almost anything with a deep water source below! He was a great tour guide that not only knew the secret non-touristy spots but also made us feel safe and and supported on any tricky ground and had all the necessary supplies to keep us hydrated and energized through a long and active day. Best of all everything was captured on Go-pro so we can relive those wonderful memories again and again!
