The Road to Hana, while absolutely GORGEOUS is definitely not worth the price it will cost you to be rescued if you get stuck on the wrong side of the road. Our Jeep rental car company even told us when we picked up our car, that beyond a certain point on the road, they absolve themselves from coming to get you and the cost of getting the car back from the treacherous road is at your own expense (not cheap). There are also tons of one lane bridges and treacherous overhangs on the Road to Hana, so if you do the drive, you need to be alert of what other cars are doing if you come to one lane roads/bridges. Now with all that said, there are a lot of beautiful things to see in the first few miles of the road, the rainbow eucalyptus trees, breathtaking mountain views, and pristine beaches galore. We also visited the Twin Falls and Twin Falls trail, which had nice calming water you could splash in to cool down. There are also a few snack stands in these first few miles of the Road to Hana, but not much else further in (so definitely pack snacks and food if you're going farther down the road!) I'd say that with the dangerous roads, and inaccessibility or expensive extraction if something happens, doing the full Road to Hana drive is not worth it. Just do the first few miles that are easily accessible (still with lots of gorgeous sights), and head back to town!
Unparalleled views of nature and wildlife in a stunning rainforest. Many nail biting spots where the road narrows to single car only - especially at just about every bridge crossing. A few times we got stuck waiting for road construction do to fallen rocks or broken down car. Plan for this to be an all day journey. Well worth it to do once when in Maui. Oh -- be sure to reserve a spot at the black sand beach and picnic area in Hana a few days in advance or you will be sorely disappointed after your multi hour drive. We also loved the lava tube in Hana although $80 for a family of 5 to spend 30 minutes seemed a little steep. With that price tag it was no surprise the owner has two cybertruck parked in his drive way.
I've done it twice now, once in December and once in October, definitely better to go after the rainy season at least my December trip the waterfalls were a lot more abundant. In October this year it was very dry and the waterfall and pools out past Hana were barely flowing at all and was more of a dried up pool brown and dirty not even getting to the ocean. The time I came in December all the waterfalls were flowing strong. If you're going to view waterfalls and pools then wetter is better, if you're going to dip in a pool then drier is safer. Either way the drive is like my childhood one lane mountain roads with cliffs on either side. Not as many vista points it is all jungle on one half so it's good to stop along the way to look at pools and get ocean views. Definitely plan on spending an entire day with the drive. Start after 9am though so you aren't effecting locals commutes. Pull over if local people are following you so they can get where they need to go more quickly. I'd probably take a tour if I did it again just to see where all the stops are. Do your research before you drive and if you go past Hana there is a great little fruit stand near the end of the nicer paved road. Also just past Hana is Huli Huli Chicken on the beach great views of Hawaii from there and awesome food. I stopped at a pull out and went to try a little trail and someone had pooped on it so watch out for that since there's no bathrooms for quite lot of the road there may be some desperate people using the jungle as a bathroom. After driving the whole thing twice I'd say next time I may just go to the Twin Falls and explore that area and up to that point a little and then go back. Maybe break up trips to Hana with specific stops and then go home rather than try to do the whole thing with stops and end up out on the road for 12 hours.

What makes it worth it are the stops along the way -- waterfalls, hidden beaches, local stands, and breathtaking lookouts. Some waterfalls you can see right from the car, but most of the best ones require getting out and doing a short hike. I'd recommend doing a little research ahead of time and picking the stops that interest you most, otherwise you'll run out of time trying to do it all in one day. My personal favorites: Keanae Lookout (gorgeous views and taro fields), East Maui Chocolate Tour, the Lava Tube Cave (super cool and unique), and of course the Black Sand Beach and cave at Waiʻānapanapa State Park -- even more beautiful in person than the pictures. Don't miss the roadside Hawaiian BBQ either -- best meal of the day. Overall, it's a long day but worth it if you love exploring, don't mind driving, and want to see a wilder, more untouched side of Maui. Just start early, pack snacks, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination!
The Road to Hana is all over the internet as a "must-do" bucket list experience, but after spending an entire day navigating its so called 64 miles hairpin turns and single lane bridges , I found it significantly underwhelming. The reality of the famous drive is that you got stuck in the car and spent hours crawling through narrow, winding roads and one-lane bridges, and the payoff is minimal: some ocean views and some average waterfalls . Met a local who lives in Maui for her entire life and she suggested not to waste time for Road to Hāna, I wish I had taken her advice. Unless you are a die-hard fan of slow, technical driving through dense rainforest, the Road to Hana might leave you feeling unimpressed.
Words to describe the drive along this exotic mountain road: lush nature history views waterfalls hiking loose dogs stopping traffic! wild mongoose! fresh hot banana bread Don't go here if you can't handle not having cell phone service or long drives with over 600 turns, including many hairpin turns. Highly recommend downloading one of the apps guiding you along the road to Hana, as you may need it when cell phone service becomes spotty. This is an all day excursion, I loved every bit of it. Bring snacks, drinks, (most importantly) don't forget to bring: bug spray, layer your clothing, take your trash with you! Respect the journey, the land, the history, and the people of this beautifully preserved part of old Hawaii.

The Road to Hanna was beautiful we there you are surrounded by nature. Every single glance is beauty. The road is curvy and in some areas one one road you have to wait for incoming traffic to pass. It is a definitely worth the drive for so much beauty fit into one trip. We went from Kihei towards Waimoku and Wailua Falls toward Hanna then Hanawi and Twin Falls. We basically did a circle around Maui. It is definitely worth is so much to see.
The road to Hana was beautiful but daunting and for us perhaps a bit too long for a day trip. The narrow winding mountain road is relentless with over 600 curves and over 50 one-lane bridges over 60 to 80 miles depending on your starting point. However, it is also relentlessly beautiful. I would recommend the road if staying overnight in Hana but although we made it there and back to Kihei in a day, it is a long haul queasy adventure. It is also certainly not for those prone to motion-sickness so be prepared. My recommendation for a shorter trip but still experience "The Road to Hana" is to go to Twin Falls. It is actually 3 waterfalls with swimming areas to visit. It is one of the first stops along The Road to Hana and a great opportunity to hike, enjoy the water and have a picnic with out travelling the full length of the infamous road.
"Boring!" "Underwhelming!" A derp. Ever notice people that leave negative reviews always say the same thing? They don't really give legit reasons either. There wasn't just a little waterfall on this road either, I saw many waterfalls. You can even park on the side of the road (you'll see other cars do it so park behind them) and you can swim in there. One of the pictures I uploaded was when I took it in the water. You just have to use common sense. We split the road to Hana in two days so that we can take our time exploring. We filled up with gas prior to starting it. It's mostly a one way road and you should exit the area before it gets dark. With the one way's and the turns, it can be difficult to see at night. Also download the self guided map app because your gps won't help much. I recommend stopping at these points: -Twin Falls -Garden of Eden -Halfway to Hana - really good banana bread -Hanawi Falls -Nahiku Marketplace -Hana Lava Tube -Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach) -Wailua Falls Pipiwai Trail Bonus: if you're brave you can make a stop at the red sand beach. I posted a review on there but please be careful of the ledge. It's easy to fall and get severely injured if you're not paying attention.
A very curvy road for comfortable drivers. This 34-mile road has about 600 turns and it is a two-way road. Be careful and mindful when driving. Locals use this road for their daily commute and you may see them driving faster than you, pull over and let them pass. We started from the airport, which was a 30-minute drive to Mile Marker 0, once we got to Hana which we were not that impressed with what it had to offer the drive straight back on the road took 2 hours. There are restrooms available along the drive, and the halfway to hana stop along with other stops beyond the halfway spot had food carts available. We pulled off at stopped at Coconut Glens for coconut ice cream and a coconut and we happy we did. If you have several days in Maui and aren't restricted to driving this road on a specific day, try to do it on a day when cruise boats are not docked in port, less crowds and people on the roads. There is minimal cellular service on this road. We predownloaded the Shaka app tour for $20 which was a live saver. It pointed out all the mile markers, gave some history to each stop and facts. Best part is we didn't need cell service as it tracked us via GPS which was great because we had no cell service the whole day!
With 59 narrow one-lane bridges and 620 curves, some of them hair-pin turns, this adventure is not for the faint of heart. But if you're like me and seek new adventures while on vacation, it is definitely a trip worth making. Start early though, and keep track of time because no one should be on this road after dark. You will be rewarded with some of most beautiful waterfalls and scenery on the island of Maui. It is a dangerous and unpredictable road. On our first try, we had to turn around and go back because a giant bolder fell and the road was blocked. So this might not be the adventure you want to save for the last day. We found the guided tours to be a little too pricey, but we did buy the Shaka Guide app and downloaded the Road to Hana tour. It was the best decision of the entire vacation. The app is great and does not lose connectivity like Google Maps would. It also does a great job of telling you where to stop and what you will find when you stop, and then picking right back up when you start going again. There is a reason for those "I Survived the Road to Hana" t-shirts, though, so this is not the adventure for everyone!!

Road to Hana is a unique experience that involves driving down a long road (most likely from the north side of Maui) down to the town of Hana. Along the way there are a variety of attractions like lush rainforests, waterfalls, hiking areas, and beaches. There are many so you'll have to do your research to find the ones you want to stop at. You will usually drive down the road, stop briefly for the attractions, then get back on the road to the next one. There were many windy and narrow roads and the driving isn't for the faint of heart. Some of the bridges are one lane so you'll have to constantly keep an eye out for cars around corners. I personally wouldn't drive at night and you really have to ensure you don't veer onto the other lane. Driving at slow speeds is a must and requires a lot of concentration. One of the other notable attractions that the road has to offer are the plentiful banana bread shops. We went to Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread which was delicious. It was pretty cool and I'm glad I got to check it out but I wouldn't do it again. read more

I recommend Dramamine if you get motion or car sickness. The road is windy. There are a lot of beautiful foliage and places to stop. If you go too early, you may not be able to get Auntie Sandy's banana bread. It's hard having to make a U-turn on the road especially if other cars are coming in the opposite direction. I don't recommend doing all the stops in one day. You will get tired. If you're going with family, I recommend the Lava Tubes, the kids will have a blast! Drive safe! read more

If you want a good tour to Hana while in Maui, book this group. They leave early but you miss a lot of the crowd. We had Lepa as our guide. Being a native, she shared the culture of the area with us. We experienced the sites and flavors of Maui. read more

Road to Hana? That's the heart of the island right there. Easily 5 stars. Lush, wild, and unreal beautiful--every turn got something special. Waterfalls, jungle vibes, little fruit stands, coffee shacks, and hidden beaches all the way through. It's a full-day cruise, but worth every second. read more

We used the Shaka Guide-Road to Hana. I"m glad we took the trip (7+ hours) to Hana and back (we were warned not to do the full trip as it is not safe). The views are spectacular (and it's real!!-ha ha to that Seinfeld reference). The only negative is that drivers are encouraged to leave early. We did (around 7:30 am). The only drag is that we paid $20/person to enter the arboreteum and couldn't visit their gift shop as they don't open until later in the morning (Grrrr #1). Also, I heard that you just have to try Sandy's famous banana bread and just as we were driving up, the Shaka narrator says, "Oh, they're closed on Sundays" (which is the day we went). (Grrrrr #2). Hana is a tiny town and only has a few eateries. Lucky the Shaka guide mentioned the food truck pod at the end of town (when you leave the Hana Bay park, turn left on the highway and the food truck pod is about 1/4 mile on the left). Remember, the joy is in the journey and not the destination. So if you focus on seeing/stopping at sights along the way, do it because when you get to Hana town itself, it's only meh. Oh, not sure it this was normal but the weathe was great in Paia, but as you climb the hill, then head down to Hana, it became overcast, then started to rain intermittantly for that part of the ride to Hana. Then on our return trip, the overcast turned to blue skies again as we lowered our elevation.....Overall, it was a fun and full day and most of all it was all totally safe (for driving). read more
I "Barely" Survived The Road To Hana No visit to Maui is complete without a scenic ride on Highway 36 aka "Road to Hana." We started out early so we can beat the traffic and the crowd. Most people who make the drive to Hana start sometime between 7:00am - 10:30am. Of course on a Wednesday the roads were not extremely busy. We were lucky! Prepare for many curves and one-lane bridges. The road has 617 curves and 56 one-lane bridges. Yup! If you're prone to motion sickness you may feel the effects as you head up to or down Hana. I didn't have any problems with the drive. My issue was that my hubby (who is a more experienced driver than me) is always tempted to look around and point out to me the scenic views. It's only safe if he can keep his eyes on the road. Aye-yai-yai!! It's almost always raining somewhere on Maui on a given day and some parts of the road were wet. We encountered some spots where it rained lightly but did not last long. The rest of the drive was beautiful and scenic and we were able to find pullout's and parking at lookout points to capture some panoramic views and take our photos. We did not have a 4x4 rental car. We stopped at some of the waterfalls along the road. Some of them have little space to park but wasn't too bad finding a spot since it was still early in the day. The trick is to get a guidebook and pay attention to the Mike markers. There is no internet a available on the road to Hana. This road is one of Maui's two most famous sights so don't miss it. Also, this scenic road is famous for its curves and one-lane bridges (da wait your turn kine). When you arrive in Hana make sure you stop at a local market or gift shop and buy a "I Survived the Road to Hana" Tee. Best souvenir! Review #2705 read more
The first leg on our Maui vacation. We took a tour with Dynamic Tour Maui. Our guide was a nice young guy, who drove us through magnificent rainforests and valleys straight out of a movie (sometimes, quite literally). There are lots of places to stop, including a watering hole, a black sand beach, several restaurants and food stands and many, many waterfalls. All of the eateries are family-owned and use locally-grown ingredients. Be warned: Unless you're a highly-skilled driver, you would be unwise to test this tropical gauntlet without a tour. There's a reason it's nicknamed "Divorce Highway." The roads are, quite simply, horrific. Not only is this journey FILLED with windy, blind turns down single lanes with no guard rails, but the last 25% will have you bouncing up and down in your seat more than a broken hayride. I narrowly avoided getting car sick. Whether you opt for the safe route or decide to go it solo, be prepared to wake up before dawn. At a minimum, pack water, snacks, Dramamine (for motion sickness) and a bathing suit. And have fun! read more

This is great trip, a must see when on Maui.... But it's a long day! We booked a tour in a small van (9 people). The tour option has its positives and its negatives. The good part... you don't have have to navigate the hairpin turns with a cliff on one side of you and the wall of a mountain on the other! The bad part... having preset stops with time limits at each. If you can handle (and that's a big if) the driving option, I would highly recommend taking your time and doing it on your own. I believe there are many downloadable apps that will help you with the navigation and point out all the points of interest. Our tour director jokingly called the Road to Hana "the Road to Divorce" because of the stress it can cause on a marriage when you drive a rental car on this trek! It is a "white knuckle" experience! Along the way you will find beauty in all forms. Rainforests, landscapes, waterfalls, beaches, gardens, food and parks are all part of this adventure. Make sure to bring a swimsuit and some type of shoe to wear in the water, so you can enjoy the waterfalls, streams and of course the black and red sand beaches. There are many little fruit, flower and jewelry stands along the way, but there are very few actual restaurants (and they seem to have strange hours), so I would recommend packing a cooler with some food just in case. Leave early, and plan on a whole day's adventure. The earlier the better because it can get kinda busy. And the more traffic means more navigation stress! read more
Tips: make sure to fill up your gas tank, pack tons of snacks, extra bag if you have to empty your stomach from the windy turns, take tons of pictures, and ensure you have time for a whole day. Also, be mindful of locals traveling through and work trucks. Pull over to the side wherever possible and let them pass. To celebrate our first anniversary, I booked our trip to the beautiful island of Maui. While our activities were jam packed on our itinerary, Road to Hana was necessary! It was my husbands first time on this journey and probably my 8th time to make the trip. But since I was young, I did not know to turn around once we reached Hana town.. We went all the way through. By the time we reached Hana, we were left on a quarter tank of gas but somehow managed to make it across! The path once the road ends begins on a dirt path. It can be very dangerous if you reach a deep valley because if it were to rain, you probably would not make it across. read more
This is the one thing you hear about on all the lists and stuff that the Road to Hana is the "must do" on the island. We were on the fence about it because you hear about all the dangerous hairpin turns, one lane bridges, and the tailgaters but we figured how often would we get the chance so we decided to go. We started our drive to the start of the Road to Hana at around 6 AM because we were able to grab the only reservation type left at Waiānapanapa State Park (Morning I, 7:00-10:00AM). The views from the car are beautiful but there are a lot of stops on the way. The bridges, turns, and the locals we're really overstated. As long as you pull to the side for any one going fast behind you, you follow the yields, and go at a decent speed you will definitely be fine. The stops we made were Waiānapanapa State Park, 'Ohe'o Gulch, the Garden of Eden Arboretum, Huli Huli Chicken, Nahiku Cafe, and Auntie Sandy's Banana Bread. Sadly Auntie Sandy's was closed so be sure to get there early if you don't want to miss it. Some tips would be to get reservations early for Waiānapanapa, pack food if you want to save time, and download a guide app to help you navigate (we downloaded the GyPSy Guide app) especially because you don't get great service in a lot of areas. We're glad we did it but I don't think I would do it again. It did take out most our day even though we didn't do a lot of the stops so keep that in mind. The Road to Hana is probably the drive of a lifetime. It runs 64+ miles & has 617 hairpin turns. Keep in mind that once you get to Hana, you have to drive the same road back to where you started !! If you are subject to motion sickness, mark this OFF your things to do on Maui. read more
Over 600 curves in 50 miles, mostly narrow one lane roads, some up-kept better than others? No wonder it took my fourth trip to Maui to even consider this drive. It's quite the commitment. We downloaded the Maui Road to Hana Shaka guide for $15. He basically told us to pass the first half! I will just have to trust that we didn't miss anything because we did not stop when he told us to skip it. - We added on the Nahiku Rd detour (45 minutes round trip). Nice view, but not worth the extra time. - Wai'anapanapa State Park: Must have reservations to enter! You can book up to 14 days in advance on the website, and there are no same day reservations. One of the few black sand beaches in Maui that have black rocks, black pebbles and black sand. Super cool black lava tube that leads into the water too. They close at 6pm and hunt you down to leave half an hour before with a bullhorn! - Pipiwai trail in Haleakala NP: Cool bamboo forest. The first waterfall wasn't even flowing. The gates close at 5pm and they stop letting people in well before that. Pro tips: - Bring insect repellent! - There is only one gas station in Hana. Fill that tank ahead of time! - A few food trucks on the second half of Road to Hana. They close early too (last one maybe 4pm). - If you get car sick, make sure you're either the driver or sitting in the front. I felt pretty green on the return. I loved the local honor system fruit stands. I was able to pick up some passionfruit and starfruit, both of which were nowhere to be found in supermarkets in early November. read more
The best way to see the road to Hana is on a tour!! There are over 600 twists and turns on a 1 car road that has traffic going both ways! It can be nerve racking especially when you are up in the cliffs and there is no where to go! It is scenic and flat out BEAUTIFUL! But the tour guys know where to stop to get those truly great photos. They know where to go to show you the waterfalls, where to stop to get fresh coconut or banana bread, they know the history, the story's... it is also the much more relaxing way to take in the sights then driving it yourself! I know we did it both ways! It is a 10 hour ride... so prepare lots of snacks and drinks, make sure you have plenty of room for the fantastic photo ops, and get set for the beauty of Maui to unfold! The first town or village is Paia, a small quaint downtown that's a quick drive through. Started our trek on the Hana highway. It is about 48 miles of road along the highway to Hana. No gas station after you start this drive. The drive took us about 2.5 hours on this stretch of road and that's with no stops. There are several spots to take pics of waterfalls, but where you can park is usually not close to the waterfalls at all. It's a 2 lane road. There are mile markers along the way. We ended up talking the Hana highway to the Wai'anapanapa state park. So many parks and beaches to stop off along the highway, random spots to get a bite or drink or two and the waterfalls too. The first leg to Hana from the airport road or by the old sugar refinery is very windy and has a ton of sharp turns and lots of one lane bridges to yield to oncoming traffic to as well. The other side of Hana back around the east side of the island was less winding and had less sharp turns, but the road was really rough and patched up. It was definitely an experience to drive on both sides of the Hana highway. Glad we got it out it done and off our bucket list, as it wasn't a most pleasant ride for me and rather nerve wrecking when there's a lot of traffic around the sharp turns and you are on the outside of the turn and further from the mountain and by the cliff with no guard rails in many parts of the mountain too. Gayle, Jim, Erin, and I took a day-long drive on the Road to Hana, with help from our "Shaka Guy" app. Our ride was long, windy, very rainy in spots, and gorgeous throughout. We stopped at Coconut Glen's along the way and at the Hana Ranch restaurant for Lunch, before returning home. The 7 Sacred Pools (and maybe completing the loop around the Island) will have to wait for another time. So will the various places that remain closed during the present Pandemic. Some say that the Road to Hana changes you. I'm not sure about that, but did find that my caution on this road did not endear me to local drivers who normalized this risk long ago. read more
