Jan was a gracious host and your guide, expert driver and the views were stunning, well worth the cost.

I want to start with the disclaimer that everyone is on their own journey in life, and because of that, experiences are personal and may be seen differently by others. I also want to apologize for revising this review twice; my first attempt was rushed and full of misspellings, and the second was a quick fix of those errors. However, after being home and having the time to relax and reflect, I realized there were details gnawing at my soul that I needed to share. While I could have justified the $250 price tag if the experience had met my expectations of what was included, I simply cannot justify it for the experience we actually had. I am left with a soured, bitter aftertaste in my heart for an experience that I wanted with my family. It is hard for me to give a five-star rating just because someone "tried"; I believe a top-tier rating must be earned through the experience one had, and Jan lacked in presentation, friendliness, and overall value. For our party of four, we paid $1,000, and in hindsight, we could have had a significantly better experience by using our own rental car and buying a high-quality telescope for half the cost. Don't get me wrong, the views were amazing, but Jan expected the National Park (which she did not create) to carry the entire value of the tour. There was no historical context shared about the land; she simply relied on the scenery to do the work. The lack of consideration for her guests was most apparent in how she rushed us. Both of my parents have medical limitations--my mother is a brain surgery survivor and my stepfather was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's. Both were medically cleared by their doctors for this visit, so while their conditions were not life-threatening, they naturally move at a slower pace, or what some would refer to as "Hawaii time." At the stop at the top of the mountain, Jan initially told us we would have an hour to look around, then suddenly changed it to 15 minutes. This was incredibly insensitive; 15 minutes is a rush for someone physically fit, let alone for people managing mobility issues. The actual stargazing was equally frustrating and felt hypocritical. Jan would complain if someone accidentally turned on a phone screen, claiming it affected her dilated pupils, yet she had no problem using a high-powered laser pointer against rocks instead of the sky, refracting the light directly into our eyes. Furthermore, none of us got long at the telescope because she insisted on refocusing it after every two people, all while a personal friend of hers joined for free and took up our paid telescope time. To put the lack of value in perspective, we recently paid $165 for a snorkeling tour on a catamaran that included a crew of five, two full meals, and equipment. Here, we had to bring our own snacks and water, and Jan even requested to use our personal National Park passes to get the group through the gate. Between the conspiracy theories playing loudly on the radio, her robotic and demanding attitude, and the underwhelming equipment, we felt massively overcharged. You can find better value elsewhere or by driving yourself at your own pace. read more

Jan communicated with us early that there was a chance of cloud cover. She remained in communication with us throughout the day and ultimately we decided to take a chance and go up. The clouds cleared and we had an amazing time. Jan was very informative, she spent time giving us historical and cultural information about Haleakala. We got to the peak with time to get a 360 degree view. Afterwards we set up for viewing. Many in our group got their first experience with a telescope. Jan provided valuable information and was very patient. I lost count of the stars, galaxies and nebula we saw. Everyone had a good time, I really enjoyed our group. I never heard of this tour until a colleague mentioned it. My husband and I were lucky enough to join this tour and I was absolutely amazed. The drive up to the summit had many switchbacks and am glad Jan was well versed in this terrain. She provided history and scenery information on the drive up. Once the sunset and it was time to view the stars, Jan lit up! She was so knowledgeable about all the galaxies, nebulae and clusters. You can feel her passion for what she does. We were well prepared with the email and notification texts. She was mindful of the time; if the group wanted to see more she gave it to us! Jan was hands down my favorite tour guide in Hawaii. She really checks in on her guests in advance, can offer better star gazing on alternate dates depending on weather. She'll tell you if she believes there is a better night for your tour and advocates for you to have the best night sky available in your vacation time. She also sends a nice itinerary for dinner that works with the tour time. Jan is also friendly, easy going, and charismatic. Her bus is extremely clean, the coffee was excellent, and she has clean warm clothes for your family. She can navigate the sky's on a dime, finding each celestial object with ease. I was really impressed with the quality of star gazing and I nearly teared up a few times being blown away by the visuals in the night sky. Jan is the owner of this tour and is the rudest tour guide I have met. I was up on Haleakala with my family and she seemed to think she owns the park. She takes up several parking spaces. She sets up chairs and has no care for anyone that is not on her tour. When confronted, she claims she has a permit and can do what she wants. She pays for it. (We had to pay to get in also so whatever) these are not the type of people we need here. NO ALOHA. I will filing a complaint with the park also. read more

A completely unique experience and a fun way to see Haleakala without needing to get up before sunrise. Would highly recommend for those looking to enjoy a beautiful sunset, a little walk around the summit, and some education around the stars. Jan made her tour super accessible to those new to stargazing and kept things in order so we were able to zip around the sky and see as much as possible in the time we had together. She also kindly waited with us back at Kula Marketplace when our Uber back was on its way, so we weren't left alone. Jan is so passionate about her work, so it was fun to connect with her and learn from her expertise while on vacation. Jan made this a wonderful experience during our visit to Maui. We would highly recommend.

I surprised my husband and close friend with this excursion to Maui Stargazing and it certainly lived up to and surpassed our excitement and expectation. All week, we were so concerned about the weather on the peak of Haleakala and on the day of the trip, Jan, the astronomer and tour guide, was in close contact with me about the weather forecast, her expertise mixed with her expectation, and her transparency about Haleakala's rapid changing climate. Obviously, weather is mostly unpredictable and we decided to gamble on Jan's experience. She gave us an overview of how some of the previous nights had gone and what she did to accommodate her guests. She also texted me pics of the peak as the day went on and satellite images that reassured us. What a PAYOFF. What was expected to be 29% coverage was actually a perfectly clear oasis of stars, planets, constellations and everything else. Jan expertly operates her 12" Dobsonian telescope and gave a clearly thoughtful opening speech after the sun sets and around dinner time. We were able to access what Jan called her "favorite spot for stars" and we got to stay there as long as we pleased. Jan was very clear on meeting times and very clear in her emails and texts about how to prepare with food, clothing, driving, and where to go and how to park SO DO NOT MISS HER EMAILS OR TEXTS! We had originally counted on the Kula Market (where the meeting place is) to have dinner options, but this was more a gift shop. Before we got to the meet, there was a really nice local market where we could pick up dinner. We ultimately set out with an arrival goal of 30 mins before meet time to be able to pick up our food. I would suggest this too, unless you have a cooler. During pandemic times, Jan is not providing rides. This is explicitly clear on her website and confirmation emails. So bring a driver who is okay with driving to a peak of the volcano. It was STUNNING to drive. Jan also escorts you up in her sprinter. She took us to multiple points on the peak where we could spend 20-30 mins looking all around Maui from the top and into the crater of Haleakala. I am still amazed. When we got to our destination, she has a short speech about important things the tour will do with her and then we are given an expert guide to the stars with her telescope, laser pointer, ipad with imagery about what you're looking for and the relevance of the stars to the season in which you're viewing them. She was phenomenal with how quickly she could orient to the celestial bodies and made viewing nebulae even more exciting by switching through her filters to give us different examples of the view. We saw FIVE galaxies! We got in all the goal celestial bodies and even a handful of others that were Jan's favorites. After that we stayed longer to just enjoy a night of the stars and the milky way. Jan, herself, was friendly, knowledgeable, caring, and deeply passionate about her job. It is crystal clear that she cares about your experience as a customer, too. Well done. This became, easily, the biggest highlight of our 9 days in Maui. MUCH RECOMMENDATION. By the time we got back to our hotel, Jan had written a thank-you email that had the names of everything we saw, links to the peak cams and so much more additional information. read more

Jan has developed a fantastic stargazing adventure. It was well planned to the smallest detail. She is knowledgeable and her passion and joy of astronomy permeates the evening. She strives for everyone to enjoy learning about heavenly bodies viewed from the phenomenal location of Haleakala. I live in rater dark sky Midwest but I had never seen so many stars. The 12 inch telescope was great for viewing stellar objects but what impressed me the most was the one used for photographing nebulae, constellations and galaxies. Itlayered images together and used WiFi connections to an app on our phones so we could each view to telescopic image on our phones. She also had tablets mounted on her van so we could view larger images and we downloaded these images to our phones. Maui Stargazing was an awesome experience. My review is delayed. We were there in October 2023. Jan provided information in advance to help us make the most of the experience. We grabbed dinner from the food trucks, relaxed and enjoyed the view and conversation traveling to the top of Haleakala, making a couple of stops along the way. Our final stop was less populated where we sat comfortably and enjoyed spectacular views of the sunset and finally, stargazing. Not only was Jan a wonderful tour guide, host and teacher; We lucked out with an amazing group of 7 diverse people who shared an interest in Hawaii, Nature and Stargazing. The group dynamic really made this one of my favorite experiences in Maui. And having warm, clean clothes provided for this one night of cold temperatures was a huge benefit. I highly recommend this tour. And if you're in Maui on the Pride of America Cruise, it's easy to rent a car or UBER to the pickup spot and then back to the ship. This is not listed on the ship's list of excursions, so you just need to make your own arrangements. read more

Went on the stargazing experience while on a family vacation in Maui and it was easily the most disappointing and expensive activity of the trip. Our guide, Jan, while knowledgeable about astronomy she was rude and unprofessional, ultimately ruining the experience for us. Even before the trip began, we were told to check in at 12 and after multiple calls, we never received any confirmation that she received our check in attempts which we found super unprofessional. After arriving at 315, the entire trip felt rushed. We had ten minutes at each stop on the mountain to check the views. Given how early we arrived for the sunset/stargazing it seemed ridiculous. I honestly would have enjoyed it far more if we had gone ourselves instead of on this tour. Once we started setting up for the star gazing portion, Jan made far too many snarky comments about how to precisely roll up the winter pants so they wouldn't drag on the ground, even at a point physically checking (and touching without permission!) people's pants while they were attempting to look through the telescope. Following in the theme of rushing, we were constantly reminded to have two people constantly at the telescope to move things along. This was exceedingly odd as between objects she spent 10 minutes pointing out the same stars over and over again. Lastly, the purchase information said the experience was supposed to go until 915 and we got back 45 minutes early. I honestly wouldn't recommend this tour with this guide to anyone. While the experience was cool, the guide really ruined it for everyone in our party and we didn't feel like it was at all a good value for the money. read more

Our group had an amazing tour of Observatory and star gazing activities at the summit of the 10,000 ft. Haleakala Volcano in Maui. Our guide and astronomer "Extroardinare" was an incredible woman named Jan who has made over 1,600 trips to the summit of the Haleakala Volcano. The tour was well planned, with a number of stops to enjoy the views, stretch our legs, etc. Her large Mercedes Sprinter was well equipped with comfortable folding chairs to sit in, a supply of snow gear (pants & jackets) in all sizes. It can get cold and quite windy on the summit and she was prepared and even served us hot coffee! Her depth of knowledge and understanding of the cosmos we all live in was beyond impressive. The beautiful sunset, stargazing through a very large telescope provided clear and distinct images of the planets, stars, and moons while Jan provided commentary of the astrological calendar of the movement of these entities over time. Being able to view the Milky Way was the icing on the cake, and I confidently checked this bucket list item off my list. I highly recommend Jan's Stargazing Tours and look forward to going again on my next visit to Maui! read more

If you already know a lot about astronomy or *really* want to look into a telescope in an amazing spot -- one of the best in the world to do so -- then you'll love this. I didn't. I loved looking at the stars, and I'd definitely recommend staying until after the sun goes down to stargaze. But for the money for the tour, I had hoped for more than a quick 10min explanation at the beginning and a quick shuffle by the telescope. It felt kind of like checking off a list - 'let's move the telescope here and look at this," and our group quickly got up, looked, and then passed to the next person. When I asked questions, I felt like I was intruding, and I left with more questions than when I showed up. For more information we were told to look at the iPad. When she used the pointer to show the constellations, that was also just super quick. There was such an opportunity to help attendees share the wonder of the people who imagined those constellations, but that wasn't part of the evening. Basically, it's an expensive tour to stay warm (which is helpful, it's nice to have warm clothing) and quickly look through a powerful telescope multiple times. If that's what you want, you'll love it. I personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't already a knowledgeable astronomy buff, and certainly not to most kids; I don't think there's enough explanation/guiding to keep younger people (or even me) engaged. That said, it's an absolutely gorgeous spot, and the night sky is amazing, so go there! Go during the day and walk around; if you can stay for sunset then that, too, because it's magnificent; if you have time and can stay and marvel at the stars and planets and the milky way, definitely do so. read more

If you love the stars, moon and celestial objects, this tour is perfect for you! It's a bit of a long tour starting at 3pm and ending at 10pm. Plan ahead and bring snacks and light dinner. Jan provides ski jackets and pants (gloves and hats also) as it does get chilly at 10,000+ elevation. We were able to see great views of the moon, Saturn, many star clusters, and a super bright falling star (meteor). Communication was excellent from the beginning after booking tour to day prior reminder, day of information and after tour information on all objects seen! This is one of the reasons I traveled to Maui. This tour is absolutely amazing~in awe! After getting picked up at the Kula Lodge, Jan drives us up to the first stop for viewing (and a bathroom stop). The second stop has jaw dropping views and is also home to Haleakalā Observatories. The views on the way to the summit will have your eyes glued to the windows. Jan sets up as soon as we arrive and hands out chairs and cold weather gear. She remembers every ones name and explains in detail while you are viewing, the galaxies, stars and planets. The mountain and stars are lovely. Our guide picked a very good, quiet spot. The telescopes were adequate to enjoy seeing some deep sky images. This tour requires you to drive your own vehicle and pay park fees. The tour was very expensive. There was coffee and cocoa, but no food. We brought our own food. Bottom line, you drive yourself and feed yourself. For the price of your family on this tour, you could buy a telescope and go yourself, or just admire the stars with a chair and binoculars after sunset. There is no assistance with getting off the volcano at night safely. The main reason I would not recommend this tour is if you have a family. Jan does not connect well with kids. She has many criticisms, quirky rules and reprimands, mostly to kids, but adults are not immune. The dog whistle to hurry up was really rude, especially since we had an injured person in our party, Also, there was no constellation story part of this tour. Jan did show all the constellations with the laser, but it was clinical. I guess I look for a little more imagination, legend and wonder on an astronomy program. My advice to this tour would be: Be more pleasant or at least less rude Wait with guests to make sure all are safely off the mountain Add some local legends and culture Offer transportation on and off mountain Offer some food. One of our favorite nights on Maui! Maui Stargazing is so much more than just a night of watching the stars. The tour starts at the Kula Lodge, a convenient location where the Kula Market offers snack/dinner options and water to bring on the ride up to the summit. It's also here where you meet Jan, the tour operator and owner of the company. Jan starts her tours off by offering constant communication, updating you via text as to the weather conditions and important reminders. She is exactly why Maui Stargazing is such a great experience. She is friendly, attentive, and so knowledgeable! We were slightly concerned about the ride up to the summit as well as the altitude sickness, but had no issues at all. Jan's van is super comfy, even in the very back. She is a careful, professional driver. She has a tv that plays a documentary about Haleakala. The first part of the drive is only 25 minutes to the first stop. The next part is about the same to the summit. Jan is careful and mindful of conditions and finds just the right places to explore and observe. As we setup for sunset she made sure to find just the right place. It was here we enjoyed the food we brought. She also offered coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks. After the gorgeous sunset we found just the right place for stargazing. Jan has a powerful laser she uses to point out planets, stars and constellations. Her telescope is amazing. We especially loved Saturn's rings and the craters on the moon. Jan answers all questions and makes the presentation friendly and inviting. We were all comfy in our heavy coats, pants, hats and gloves all provided. She also had great chairs for resting in between sights. All in all we had an amazing night with Jan. We especially loved her follow up email detailing the sights of the night and a "presentation" she includes with professional photos of the sights. We highly recommend Jan's tour and know you'll love it. read more

I was surprised by how disappointed I felt after this. I know I'm going to cringe when I see the charge on my credit card statement. I love love love stargazing, as my husband says, it's my catnip. Soooooo I was pretty excited to find this. What I didn't enjoy so much: Most of the trip was spent driving to the stops in the Haleakala National Park. We had been there just the day before, so this felt like deja vu. Sunset was nice, but that's something you can do on your own and don't need to join a tour group for. Stargazing time was minimal and we had to cycle through quickly when looking through the telescope. I thought we would hear more about the constellations and be able to hangout and scope out the sky with our naked eye, but that didn't happen either. Our guide came prepared with all the equipment, which was handy, so it was curious that we didn't hangout longer since we were all dressed and ready for an intense night of stargazing. It may have have lived up to the pricetag more if we could cut out the "sightseeing" and push the time back to just catch the quick sunset and roll into more of the stargazing. You need to bring your own dinner also, so that could've changed the game if dinner were provided. read more

For a city dweller like me, seeing the stars and nebulae and binary galaxies was out of this world. You have an incredibly clear view of the Milky Way with the naked eye and seeing the celestial objects through Jan's telescope = wow moment after wow moment. Jan provides gloves, winter jackets, fleeces, and ski pants WHICH ARE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. It quickly goes from perfectly pleasant to super cold after the sun sets. Jan brings hot chocolate and Maui onion chips, which were cherries on top of the sundae. The drive up Haleakala is beautiful but kind of nerve wracking for someone who isn't used to twisty turns on the edge of a mountain. Oh and be on the look out for the endangered nene birds! You may spot them in pairs because they mate for life. read more

The driver of this tour parked and took up 3 parking spots while also having all 6 customers put their chairs right in front of us with no respect. The customers had lunches and let litter fly through the parking lot and didn't care. The driver said, "I have a permit and I pay a lot to park here and set up my telescope." Sad. Business like this ruin our islands. Please do not spend your money taking advantage of ancestral land. read more

The setting was spectacular, and Jan had thought of every detail, from complementary coffee and hot chocolate, to comfortable chairs and warm clothing, to a step ladder so that children could look through the enormous telescope. We went on a full moon in December. Stars were hard to see given the full moon (of course), but that was the only date available so we took it. Was very COVID safe, driving in separate cars. Jan was knowledgable; her focus is mostly about pointing out where the constellations are (less of a focus on the science and astronomy, where we had hoped to learn a bit more). She has warm ski suits which are great for the cold weather. No hot cocoa due to COVID. It was a nice experience, but a bit over priced for what is was. Doing it again we might just drive there ourselves and look at the stars after sunset. read more

Jan is an excellent host, and teacher. She is very passionate about what she does and you can tell when she is giving her tour of the night sky. She is respectful of your time and money, my boy friend and I had planned to do our tour on a Tuesday, but because of weather conditions Jan let us know we would have to reschedule. The night we rescheduled for was a little cloudy, but Jan was still able to show us 12-15 objects! She was funny, knowledgeable, and made sure everyone got ample amount of time on the telescope. She even provided a small step ladder for children and short people like myself. At the end she asked if there was anything we would like to re-visit or try to see. We went on a sort of rainy evening and were worried the skies would not cooperate. But we actually were above the rain. Saw Jupiter and its four moons, Venus, Mars, Saturn with the rings, 4 galaxies, and too many other things to list. We even saw three meteors and dozens of satellites visible to the naked eye. If you love great views and have some interest in Astronomy, this is a must! We headed to Haleakala before sunset and were able to take some breathtaking photos of the crater. The drive to Haleakala is also a sight to see! Once the sun sets that's when the tour really begins. Jan, our tour guide, is really friendly and passionate about astronomy. It gets REALLY cold once the sun goes down. Jan does provide clothing and hot chocolate but our group still was freezing. The lowest temp was 44 degrees Fahrenheit. Dress in layers. Loved the views we got of different objects through her telescope. Overall, it was an experience I won't forget. Highly recommend. read more
