We had a wonderful morning trail ride on our most recent Maui trip. The ranch is really convenient to the Lahaina & Kaanapali area but the minute you get up to the gates, you feel that you're in another world. It's lush and really peaceful at the ranch and on the trails. Our guide Liloa was really fun and interesting - he's a real character and had a lot of fun info about the islands and the ranch. He was especially kind and helpful when my daughter got a bit nauseous toward the end of our ride. This was amazing. My friend and I hadn't ridden in over decades. Our 2 guides were positive and supportive as well as knowledgeable on the Island and it's history and plant life. So impressed. We had a wonderful experience from the moment we called to make the reservation for a trail ride. Everyone was so lovely and very accommodating. They fit us in their schedule with our last minute request and provided excellent customer service from directions to the ranch and throughout the ride. The property itself is gorgeous and offers spectacular views and various terrain. We are very beginner and Willow + Tara explained and showed us everything to make sure we were super comfortable. We went on the sunset ride for our honeymoon on Saturday evening... I'm really torn with how to rate and write this review... So! Me - I'm not a huge rider, I took riding lessons in college for a few months, but have forgotten nearly everything. My husband is an expert rider and was in the British Household Cavalry for 7 years. As you can see - two totally different levels of riding. Upon arrival, you have to read and sign a contract that will scare the living daylights out of you. Yes, contracts are meant to provide you with all the necessary warnings and to 'scare' you, but this one made me want to hop back in the Jeep and drive away. After that, you receive a little booklet to read about some riding tips and do's and don'ts. We were told that our ride was only going to be 90 minutes instead of the 2 hours due to the rain the day before, but that we would be refunded the extra part of the ride. That was nice. So - for the preparation of the ride - yeah - nothing much to say. Gina called off a few horse names (named after celebrities) and paired the riders up. I rode Mike Meyers and my husband had Brad Pitt. There were 8 of us on the ride, so the group was split - four individuals with Alexis and four individuals with Caitlin. We were with Caitlin's group. The ride starts on the early side - we were on top of the horse at about 4:30. With only an hour and a half ride, that meant that we were already back at the ranch before the sun had set. :-/ Not quite what I thought it was going to be. I thought we were going to see the sunset whilst on horseback. The ride itself was OK - we were the third and fourth people on the ride, so our guide spent 90% of the trip chatting with the first girl who was right behind her. A bit annoying on our part but hey- what can you do. The guide was helpful in that she pointed out things and provided history along the ride. Learned a lot of neat stuff about certain plants, flowers, etc. She also stopped to take our pictures at the pretty part of the ride, so we've got some cute photos of us atop horse. I'm honestly thankful the ride was cut down to 90 minutes. We got a bit bored... :-/ It was pretty much the same thing, over and over. My husband would have preferred to ride faster, obviously, but that wasn't possible, as everyone else was a beginner (myself included, remember!) Yes, you do ride along a small cliff, but I didn't feel frightened or anything... All in all, it was OK. As one other person mentioned - as a complete horse lover - my husband was also appalled at the horses' living conditions. There weren't any mats and things looked a bit barren. Considering the money that we paid ($250/2 people, including taxes), we expected to see them a bit better taken care of. read more

Really great location. Drive up is dirt but it is groomed well, so not a bad drive for average rental car. Ranch is nice. Very green and lush. You are pretty high up so it's a whole new climate. Very great day! Bring sunnies and sun block. You can not have backpacks or purses on the ride so just bring what's on their list. Horses are really great. They all look well taken care of there. The guides really care for these animals and it shows. Guides were very nice and made sure we were doing good the whole time. We were told positive when we were doing good. If they say something quick and stern it's for your own good. We really had a great time and appreciated everything. Thank you ladies! ***On our way back to the main roads on our drive back. My wife and I spotted a golden retriever that looked hot and out of place. We stopped and gave it water and noticed no collar. We called the ranch and they came down and took the dog with them to take care out it. Real animal loving people! What a beautiful place to experience more than just a ride. We took a group of three young ladies to ride on an afternoon during thanksgiving week. The weather was perfect as can be (always is on Maui). The ranch's hands were all very personable as was the Hoss..... we got the chat a bit on where folks came from and how they came to be Maui folk. It was all wonderful to hear and see. The fresh fruit growing around the grounds is also very beautiful. We had an absolute amazing time at Ironwood Ranch. They treated us like we were family. I have never ridden a horse before (outside of pony rides as a kid), so I was a bit nervous. The guide put me on Bruno Mars, a very calm and sweet natured horse. He went at a slow steady pace and virtually followed the horses in front of him. The guide checked in with us often to make sure we were doing well and also shared lots of cool facts with us. The views were absolutely stunning! Took a bit of driving on the old pineapple field road, but once we arrived to the office, it was well worth the little journey. This was the last island for my wife and I to ride and we had a wonderful time. Our guides and Wrangler set our stirrups perfectly so our ride was comfortable and our knees, rear, and legs felt great after our ride. It did rain a bit during the ride, but not enough to interfere with our safety, though the clouds did partially instruct our view of the coast line. Tara and Gigi were our guides and they were so easy to chat with and obviously so knowledgeable about the land and the horses! They were very thorough explaining all of the little quirks about our particular horses and how to be successful at having a comfortable ride with them. I rode with David and he was an absolute hilarious guy! He knew I was a push over so he liked to test me by stopping to munch on some grass every few feet! My husband rode with Goliath. My husband and I are visiting Maui for our honeymoon and after reading all the amazing reviews for Ironwood Ranch we decided to check it out. We had such a great time and it was really the highlight of our trip! Dani was our trail guide and she was really pleasant and had a ton of info on the native plants surrounding us and also the local history. Was a really cool experience! Ironwood Ranch is such a beautiful place and all the staff was very welcoming. After our ride we were allowed to greet and pet the other horses in the stable and also walk the grounds and check out all the organic fruit trees. We had such a blast! Dani instructs you on proper positions while riding uphill and downhill as well as general riding alignment while sitting on a horse. This was really important to me because in the past at various other horseback riding tours we've done I have been extremely sore for nearly a week after. But not this time!! We even were allowed to give our horses a treat afterward. How fun! My husband rode Bruno Mars and I rode Carlos Santana. Both horses were mild tempered and overall very easy to ride. They take the time to train their horses here, you can tell! We really enjoyed our experience and highly recommend!!! Mahalo ! read more

This ride was EPIC! Gina was phenomenal! Her knowledge of not only horses but the surrounding plant life made the horse ride fun and educational. From coffee beans growing wild to cinnamon leaves, from wild ginger to passion fruit blossoms, we got to experience nature to the full. My niece and I did a morning ride with Tarra (sp?) and had a wonderful time. Her and the two other ladies that got us setup were all extremely friendly and helpful. They put great thought into which horses to ride and the order in which we rode. Maui law doesn't allow riding on the beach BUT we had amazing views of the ocean and the neighboring islands. Tarra also spoke about the plants and the islands as we rode. She was also great in giving directions to a rider when needed and ensuring we all had a safe and enjoyable ride. I can't say enough about this place. I've been riding all my life and typically stay away from rental stables. SO GLAD I gave this place a try. The horses were exceptionally well cared for - so much so that they look, act and ride like privately owned horses. The guide,Tara, was amazing. We had such a nice trail ride with Ironwood Ranch. We scheduled for my birthday, but tropical storms left us rained out. Gina (or maybe Gail, pardon my memory) was super great about re-booking us at a time that worked for us, and when weather looked questionable, moved us to an earlier ride same day. I admitted to them that I was an experienced rider, and Gina hooked me up with her favorite horse, Vigo, who is an absolute doll. The horses are well mannered and well educated. Not only are they safe for beginners, they are well cared for and happy. There was very little ear-pinning and crankiness, except when two horses who dislike each other were in close proximity, which they mostly avoid by keeping everyone in a specific order. Our trail guide was Dani, who was informative, friendly, and kept everyone comfortable with their horses. When we were done we were offered a second ride because they had openings. Gail gave us the hook-up. I rode a different horse the second time around, Kona, who was also wonderful. Gina took us the second time, and the same ride with a different guide was a whole new experience. Dani provided tons of technical knowledge for the beginner, while Gina provided in-depth knowledge of the medicinal values of the local plant life. While Dani gave us an overview of plant life, as well as tons of info on the horses, Gina gave us a nature tour with our ride. We loved them both, each in their own way. Ironwood is highly recommended for the beginner and experienced rider alike. Also excellent value for the money, as these guys are a class act! Ignore the negative reviews, some people don't understand how to be courteous guests, or aren't aware of the risks of sitting their butts on 1200lb animals with a mind of their own, despite the multiple warnings. read more

Best birthday present! My girlfriend booked a 90min jungle ride after researching all the ranches in Maui. She's been competing for 12 years in horse riding jumps so she knows what to look for. She said that after seeing the pics of the horses on Instagram, she could tell the horses were really well maintained, fed and happy. The price was the deal breaker, it was the best, most affordable deal on the island. Other 4 people had book the same tour, all adults, so the staff took us on this GORGEOUS jungle path which may not be suitable for kids. The visit consisted in a loop around a variety of landscapes, some over the fields that overlook the ocean and Molokai island, some inside the fresh and cool jungle. The horses, mine was called David Beckham and hers Lady Gaga, were gentle, well behaved and professional path walkers. They would take you at a nice pace and you wouldn't have to worry much about directing them so we could enjoy the view, taking pictures and smiling non stop. We saw some of the ancient Hawaiian constructions from the old tribes, rare flowers, a large variety of trees, fresh cinnamon and lime trees. The ranch is beautiful, with picnic areas, hammocks and a field of trees full of fruits that you can pick and take home if you like. The staff was very kind and kept us entertained. At the end we spent 90min on the horse and about 70min on the actual path. Great in all aspects! read more

Ok so this is the one and only ride I have done on Maui so I have nothing to compare it to but it was really nice. Ranch and the horses were great, horse were well trained and easy to ride good listeners. The owner and guide were good at pointing out different vegetation. The week before it had rained so much some of the trails had to be closed but Gina did a great job at giving us a good ride with a spectacular view. Our experience at ironwood ranch with both Tara and Dani was exceptional. We decided to go riding while on our vacation, but as someone who works with horses daily, I had some reservations. I didn't want to go somewhere where the horses weren't well cared for or they threw you on a horse with 20 other people and said go. Ironwood ranch FAR exceeded my expectations. Our group included riders and non riders and everyone was treated kindly and felt very safe. We were able to wander around the farm before the ride meeting the horses and asking questions about them. Everyone was asked to review an informational guide about how to ride, then was helped onto their horse and given some basic instruction before heading out. The actual ride was an amazing ride through the rainforest with impressive views of the ocean, lanai, and Molokai. Tara told us about the vegetation and scenery as we rode, and her knowledge was expansive. Afterward, they allowed us to take some citrus from the trees before leaving. You could tell everyone there truly cared about the horses and loved what they do. I could not recommend them enough. read more
