I checked in easily and quickly at the front reception desk. Had a mild wait while I scribbled out some paperwork and and then after a few more minutes, went to get my eye exam I saw Quan Dao for my exam. I've seen her twice before. The last two times were quite interesting. I had a routine eye exam and then I suggested if the prescription was simple enough that I could get it fulfilled at Costco. Oh, that was not the right decision for me. My prescription IS simple but Costco had to cut my lenses four times and they still failed. They sent me back for another eye exam to make sure my prescription was "correct". If there was a "mistake" in the prescription then I was allowed a free redo. There was no mistake in my prescription, but there was some room for a fudge factor. Which changed the prescription enough to get me a free redo at Costco. That was the whole point of the exercise. Well, the exam this time went smoothly. I suspected there was some very minor change to my prescription which showed up mostly in my nearsightedness. I felt I might benefit from some extra power in the lens there. Bingo. That was the exact result of my new exam. This was such a minor change to my prescription that Quan Dao and I debated if it was worth it to get another pair of glasses. In the end, we decided the problem could be solved with a minor upgrade in a pair of cheap readers. These cost anywhere from two bucks to 20. Then we both recalled the Costco experience and shuddered. We both agreed it was not worth going through anything like that again not for this minor prescription change. Checking out was a breeze. I just needed to pick up the printout for my new prescription and it was done.

They do a good job at explaining things and talk about preventative things since the eyes can show some signs of things that might not be doing well in the body. Dr. Moussa spent the time to explain the prescription options to me that she felt I would benefit from, based on my day to day. She was also very enthusiastic about doing so. Jeff spent a good 45 min to an hour with me, to ensure that my multiple eyeglass order was exactly what I wanted, as inexpensive as it could be (leveraging my insurance) and was pleasant to work with at the same time. I did not feel rushed. The only recommendation I would make would be to have more variety of frames. In the past, selecting frames was a time consuming, fun affair, as there were SO many different styles to choose from. Now the frames are, for the most part, functional pieces rather than extensions of anyone's particular personality. I still found frames that I am very happy about but not so many that I had to buy two because I couldn't decide. All in all, great experience. I appreciate their care and time spent with me.

I think he is the first and only O.D. at this Costco location, and my wife and I have had exams here since the time he started, which was about 30 years ago. Since a large component of any eye exam is the patient's subjective judgement of a series of better/worse images, the patient needs to feel comfortable and at ease. Emotional tension can lead to physical tension which is likely to skew the results if the patient recoils even slightly from the phoropter. Word on the street is Dr. Kamei may be retiring soon. The new Vallejo Costco is likely going to have a new O.D. also. Best wishes Dr. Kamei, but I know many others have the same opinion of your practice.
