I think Dr. Kamei is a competent O.D., but his interpersonal skills are severely lacking, and that's the only reason I'm dinging him one star. I think he is the first and only O.D. at this Costco location, and my wife and I have had exams here since the time he started, which was about 30 years ago. Since a large component of any eye exam is the patient's subjective judgement of a series of better/worse images, the patient needs to feel comfortable and at ease. Emotional tension can lead to physical tension which is likely to skew the results if the patient recoils even slightly from the phoropter. Word on the street is Dr. Kamei may be retiring soon. The new Vallejo Costco is likely going to have a new O.D. also. Best wishes Dr. Kamei, but I know many others have the same opinion of your practice. read more

Went to his office to get my contact and eyeglass prescription renewed twice. Very dry and stoic communication style, and doesn't really have a knack for customer service. Made me feel bothersome for asking 1 or 2 questions. He's straightforward and gets his job done, though feels like he just wants to push you out of there. read more

I'm blown away, you literally have the eye machine in your office yet, cant give a proper reading????Shouldn't you be aware that the wrong prescription can cause eye damage as well... An optometrist? Wish there was a zero star option. Paid for a contact exam and tried to pick up my prescription from it. He was so rude and acted like I was bothering him. Then he proceeded to write me a script for ONE day. Meaning the script was only valid for ONE day and was limited to ONE box of contacts. It was very unpleasant feeling, very unwelcoming, did not even introduce himself- did'nt even say hi! ...had to ask the desk if that was the doctor!. Looks like he is not happy with what he is doing. The receptionist seemed very nervous and afraid that I would get too close to her in that little tiny room. I really wish I went somewhere else, it was really awkward and annoying. Didn't introduce himself or asked me if I had any issues with my sight, didn't go over my information or ask questions it was awkward silence and straight to the board. At the end of the exam we only exchanged a few words, didn't bother to tell me anything about my vision or compare the changes. Didn't even hand me a copy of my prescription so I can order my contacts or start looking for glasses. Very unprofessional and bland, I truly regret not going out of town to see my other doctor. If I could give 0 stars I would, don't go here if you need information on your vision or new glasses. Got an eye exam awhile back and thought Costcos eye center seemed like a good place to go to! The receptionist was kind but they gave me the last appointment of the day so they were rushing. The doctor didn't even greet me just asked me the usual questions if I can see 1 or 2 , 3 or 4 better . I mentioned I was pregnant and my eye vision was getting a bit worse and he said to come back after pregnancy so I can see if my vision is still bad . Gave me the lowest prescription and told me I could look at some frames outside . But I don't think it's the correct prescription cause I can't see up close nor faraway but I got a really low prescription! My fault for not speaking up more but he seemed like he was rushing and didn't want to answer my questions . read more

Straight to the point! It was my first time coming here and The filipino girl sitting in the front, Janelle, was the worst receptionist ever! She gave off a very negative vibe full of attitude which left a very bad taste in my mouth. She is unprofessional on the phone and in person. Maybe it's because she is young and inexperienced, but either way, she needs an attitude adjustment. Dr kamei doesn't know what he's doing! I saw Dr. Kamei in 2012 and 2013 for my yearly exam. Both times, I had very positive experiences. Dr. Kamei does not appear to over book, so it was easy to schedule an appointment and I was seen promptly when I arrived. My old optometrist left me waiting approximately 30 minutes past my appointment time every single year from 1995 to 2011, which drove me nuts. Dr. Kamei is also a very mellow guy-- friendly without being excessively chatty-- and is very thorough about addressing concerns. This year, I walked out with three new contact solutions to try after I complained that my contacts were drying out and I could only wear them for a few hours at a time, after Dr. Kamei ruled out some other potential causes. His prices are great and he is in the Costco optometry department, which is also staffed with wonderful people and filled with great bargains ($50 Oscar de la Renta frames? Yes, please!). In short, Dr. Kamei is great and I recommend his practice to anyone who values efficient yet thorough treatment at a more than fair price. read more

I can't believe he has all these positive reviews. Thought I came on a bad day but I guess his personally is just depressing all the time. When I came in no one said hi to me, and I don't even think he even make eye contact with me during the whole visit. There was another man there before me who was trying to sell him some equipment and he was just super rude about it. When asked how he was doing he said "not great", and when told "I hope your day gets better", he responded with "it won't". JESUS. At least pretend like you enjoy your job like the rest of us. How freaking depressing. When I checked out all he said was "do you want to pay with cash or credit?" No mention of insurance or anything. Here's the deal, I started going to Costco opto about 6 years back and decided 2 years ago to try San Francisco Costco opto service. The optometrist out there was very friendly, personable but incompetent. He had me buy a set of contacts despite complaining to him that my right eye (I have astigmatism) felt very uncomfortable. He changed me up to another brand and it was still slightly uncomfortable. Being a first timer with contact lenses, I thought it was normal. Fast forward to present day (summer of 2015) I decided to try and come back to Vallejo Costco and I was reminded that Dr Kamei is not as friendly and personable as the previous optometrist that I had. However, he was very efficient, doesn't take shortcuts and it was obvious that he does his job in a by the book manner. He told me to come back a week after to get my trial contacts and holy sh*t, it was a whole new world. The contacts that he prescribed was so nice and comfy and even after telling him about this, he still had me sit down and checked my eyes with his apparatus. Yes, he still performed the Snellen chart! Needless to say, he does his job as an optometrist and if you're expecting proper customer service, humor, etc, just chop it up with his very personable assistants instead. I dinged a star from this review only because I do acknowledge that he does need a little bit of humor. But hey, nobody's perfect and he does his job real well. read more

I went there for my eye exam and I could not be happier with the service they provided. Dr Kamei was very polite and patient. Since English isn't my first language and I couldn't understand some of the terms he explained everything to me. I haven't had my eyes examined for more than 5 years. I'm very happy with my new contacts and I'm very happy with finding this place and great knowledgeable Doctor Kamei. My eyes are in good hands and care thanks to him! The front desk lady was nice but when i walked in i got a kind of weird vibe. The Dr was very nonchalant. Usually when i go to other eye places the Dr is usually very happy and welcoming and stuff like that. But here it was weird. I also did not like how i was slapped in the face with a $89 price when i specifically told the lady that i want just a General eye exam for eyeglasses which i was told that it costs $49. But i guess the doctor had felt the need to still check my eye sight for contacts i'm assuming. You should always clarify with your patient SMH. read more

This was the most bazaar eye exam I've ever had! I'd made appt's for myself & 18 yr old daughter, to both get new glasses & contact lens RX's. She went in 1st, & came out w/a very strange look on her face, & I got the why, as soon as my exam began. He was the most "non-verbal", & unprofessional Dr I've ever seen! I wasn't trying to make small talk, I just asked a few relevant questions about the exam, which he completely ignored, & refused to answer. He'd scroll down to letters that I couldn't read, & he'd refused to change it, he just kept repeating "BLINK DON'T SQUINT"! I'd eventually start guessing, & when I'd finally get the 1st three letters right, & he was fine with that. Uh, how exact can an exam be, where you have to keep guessing until you get it right? After leaving the office wearing the disposable trial lenses, I could feel one lens was damaged, & had began to really hurt my eye, so I went back for another lens, since I was supposed to wear them for 2 weeks. As I took the defective lens out of my eye, & was holding it up to the light, trying to see if it was ripped, he came out w/the replacement lens, & set it down on the counter. As I reached for it, he quickly snatched it away, like I was trying to "get over" on him, & keep the torn lens too! I kind of lost it, & said, "Do you really think I'm trying to "steal" this damaged lens, or what"? He kind of stammered, & said, "Uh, no", then he instantly changed his demeanor, & started chatting away, but I wasn't in the mood to listen to, or talk to him, after his refusal to answer even basic questions during my exam, looking at his exasperated expressions, or having dealt with his smug, rude, condescending demeanor. Short and simple. I haven't been able to wear contacts for about 10 years when the contact technology had not yet improved to treat astigmatism and nearsightedness. Since I am both a Kaiser member and Costco member and have had bad experiences at Kaiser optical services, I decided to try Dr. Kamei. I was not disappointed. The receptionist was kind and attentive. Many people have stated that the doctor had "personality flaws" by not being "friendly". I found him to do a thorough exam and I haven't seen this well in years! This may sound like a simple endorsement but it's much more than that. All I have to say about this doctor is he apparently hates his job and probably entire existence. I have never experienced such a rude doctor in my life besides this miserable guy. About 3-4 weeks ago I ordered contacts to be delivered to my house and was told they would take between 1-2 weeks to get in the mail. Two weeks into waiting I go back to Costco to check on the status of my order only to find out Costco had not even recieved my contacts at the store and was told they would likely take at least another full week to come in. I then cancelled my order and was refunded, only to have the ORIGINAL contact order arrive to the Vallejo store very few days later. After getting a notification that they were delivered, I went back and asked if I could still purchase the two boxes of contacts (which I had been refunded for) they had recieved, to which the DOCTOR REFUSED TO SELL THEM, stating I was "no longer his patient". Just to be clear, throughout the entire process the receptionists and others working the main desk did nothing wrong and were simply doing their job as best they could given the crazy circumstances. But this doctor is seriously on another level of douchebaggery, I will absolutely NEVER return for an eye exam or anything at all from him. read more

Horrible experience! I had a similar experience to a negative review previously written. I had gone to Dr. Kamei he was fine when I first saw him...stoic and professional but not rude like the second time I saw him. He was very unprofessional, uncouth, apathetic and impatient. When having to make a choice between which lens were clearer, I took my time with a few because it looked similar. He seemed irritated and was rushing me. I felt uncomfortable and then just started to make choices quickly so he wouldn't snap at me again. When he compared my old prescription to the new one he said it was off and the last person that examined me diagnosed or wrote the prescription wrong. I told him that he was the person that wrote it. He then blamed it on me; well maybe if he didn't rush me then I probably would have the correct choices for my eyes. The office that day wasn't busy so I don't know what crawled up his butt that day to make him Dr. Super Jerk but never again and I tell everyone I know not to go to him. I had been to another doctor since and she was pleasant, warm, patient, caring and informative. She told me I had astigmatism which Dr. Kamei apparently didn't catch. I go to that Costco all the time and I am always reminded of my bad experience with Dr. Kamei. read more

I recently went to the optometrist at the Fairfield Costco and had a great experience and did not have to deal with filling out a reimbursement form, only paid a $10 copay. Dr. Nguyen was very kind and patient and she answered my questions thoroughly. Tried to book an appt for my dad in Fairfield but the office was closed temporarily, so I figure Vallejo Costco optometrist can't be that much different. WRONG My dad had the misfortune of seeing this doctor. He and his secretary/assistant did not have very pleasant attitudes, appeared bored out of their minds, and did not offer much help regarding VSP. We were the only people there at the time with no one after my dad, so I didn't understand why they didn't want to help us. I asked Dr. Kamei what the mailing address was to send the VSP reimbursement form and was answered by a blank stare. I understand that you do not deal with VSP directly, but it would be nice if you could offer some guidance as to what the procedure is. Or at least direct us to someone who does have a clue. Both costco's offer eye examinations for $49, but if you have the chance I recommend the Fairfield branch over this one. You will have a better experience, and their optical centers have very similar selections of frames. read more
