Unique. Tasty. Efficient. Been going to Barrio for years now since they opened their other location…read morein Portsmouth NH years ago and so I can confidently say this is the place to go for scrumptious tacos unlike anything you'll taste elsewhere. Barrio also leveraged a unique ordering system split between predefined tasty tacos or fully customizable, BYO tacos of all forms and flavors. Mason jar margs are equally generous and delicious, with many flavors and options to choose from. If you're an apoplectic steak lover I highly recommend giving the La Tierra a taste - an unlikely yet truly delicious intersection of Coca Cola, bacon, steak, and secret sauce that makes this taco tantalize your taste buds like Boston's own Keytar Bear tearing it up on any given Tuesday night. Add to that a unique , if bustling, ambiance, with more decor flair than vintage Jennifer Aniston on a TGIF work night and you've got a recipe for a great dining experience that will not feel like every other Mexican restaurant with Americanized quesadillas, hard shell tacos, and $50 sugary marg pitchers.

Started off with some chip and guac which also came with salsa. I loooooved the guac! The salsa was ok but I'm also not the biggest fan of guac. Ordered the cajun fuego bowl which came with cilantro lime rice, black beans, shrimp, and tostones. Absolutely delish and 10/10. Portions were big so we also had a lot to take home. Prices were fair.

It's very clean and the prices are very reasonable. As far as the menu goes it's tex-mex style with mexican items on the menu as well as burgers and fish. Monthly specials are always creative and tasty. There are also secret menu items like nachos suprema which i do highly recommend. The french fries are top notch btw, try them with melted cheese, bacon and green onion.

If you tell me you're going to a taco spot two days in a row on a short trip to Portsmouth, I'll…read moreusually tell you to branch out, the local food scene is way too competitive to burn two lunches in the same building. But then there's Barrio. My wife and I stepped into Barrio on day one looking for a quick, solid lunch, and walked out so completely sold that by noon the next day, we were back. We kicked things off both days with the salsa and guac flight, guacamole, pineapple salsa, salsa verde, and salsa roja. Usually, a salsa flight has one clear standout while the rest just play backup, but everything here holds its own. The pineapple salsa brings a bright, tropical sweetness that cuts right through the richness of the guac, while the salsa verde delivers that crisp, tangy tomatiillo kick. The salsa roja had a deep, smoky heat. Every bowl was fresh, bold, and vanished fast. For the main event, my wife took the "build your own taco" route. She loaded one up with crisp-tender tofu and another with perfectly cooked fish, then stacked them high with a colorful mix of veggies and a tailored blend of sauces and salsas. Customizable menus can be a gamble, but every element on her plate tasted distinct, fresh, and carefully prepared. I stuck to the signature side of the menu and ran through three distinct offerings, the Crunchy Chipotle Chicken, El Jefe Loco, and A La Tierra. They were all fantastic, but El Jefe Loco stole the show. Let's talk about the "Stoner Shell" / "Dub Shell" setup for a second, a soft flour tortilla bonded to a hard corn shell with warm, melted queso. You get that satisfying, classic crunch without the taco completely disintegrating into your lap after the first bite, backed by a warm layer of cheese that ties the whole taco together. It's ridiculous in the absolute best way possible. Barrio nails the sweet spot, fantastic vibe, incredibly fresh ingredients, and flavor combinations that keep you thinking about them long after you've left. If you find yourself anywhere near Portsmouth, I highly suggest them.

Zero out of five stars if I could…read more I genuinely cannot tell you the last time we placed an online order with Barrio and actually received everything we paid for. Missing items have become such a routine occurrence that both DoorDash and Uber Eats have flagged our account because of how frequently we've had to report multiple items missing from our orders. Tonight, we decided to give Barrio another chance after a friend mentioned having a great experience dining in. We even ordered directly through Barrio's website, thinking perhaps that would eliminate some of the issues we've had with third-party delivery services. Somehow, HALF of our order was missing. To make matters worse, trying to contact the restaurant is an exercise in futility. There is quite literally no way to reach a human being. Whether you select the option for the host stand or online orders, you're prompted to leave a voicemail, only for the system to immediately disconnect the call. The amount of money we've wasted on food that we've paid for and never received is frankly appalling. What's particularly frustrating is that we actually enjoy the food and would happily order from Barrio regularly if we could count on receiving what we paid for. At this point, it's not an occasional mistake. It's a consistent failure to fulfill orders correctly, compounded by a complete lack of accessible customer service to resolve the issues. I cannot recommend Barrio for takeout or delivery under any circumstances. We have given them more chances than we should have, and tonight was absolutely the last time.

Okay, so this is one of those places that IS as cool as it seems on social media!…read more Lots of seating options, but we chose to sit at the bar overlooking Main St. It's a narrow counter top and there's nowhere to put your bag, so just a heads-up there if you like a little more space. The staff was fantastic! So patient, great recommendations (I doubted something she suggested, and what she suggested ended up being way better then what I wanted), was available to us when we needed and also did a great job just leaving us alone to chat. Really couldn't have asked for better service! The vibes are fun! It's somehow both family friendly and trendy? The drinks are great! I had a specialty banana rum punch and the Pink Dragon (mezcal, lime, dragon fruit, agave, black salt). I'm not a tequila girlie, but the person next to us had one and it was such an attractive beverage. My only regret? I didn't have two! The food was amazing! Bless these restaurants that are out here serving up quality vegan food. We had the specialty guacamole (it was topped with mango and chile lime seasoning, I believe) and it was a SOLID portion for the price point. I also got: 1) the BBQ jackfruit taco (with coco pineapple BBQ sauce, slaw, picked onions) and while it was filling, it was pretty underwhelming. When I look back at my pics, I'm wondering if they forgot to add the sauce? 2) the Impossible Taco (pico de gallo, vegan chipotle crema, cabbage) was stupid good. GET THIS. I wish I had gotten two of these. It was savory, and satisfying, and dangerously crushable (I'm convinced I could eat four). 3) the Treehouse Slaw (broccoli, kale, kohlrabi, brussels with an avocado crema), which I could eat every single day. Crunchy, perfectly dressed, a contrasting and complimentary side to the Impossible Taco. This. Is. A. Must. Visit.

I'm honestly surprised by all the good reviews, do y'all not have tastebuds?…read more I love tacos. Love is an understatement. This was so off putting I refused to finish a taco out of my 3 taco meal. Played it safe, got the ground beef. The taco was greasy despite having the double tortilla layer which it had soaked through. The taco meat was very bland and there was a funky sweet taste to it, maybe because of the chipotle aioli? No cheese. No hot sauce. Between the texture and the taste, there was no way I was able to get past a couple bites. I thought the chips and salsa would be my saving grace, however there was zero salt on the chips and the salsa was just their pico de gallo. The pico was super watery and tasted like bland tomato water. No salt or flavor in there either. In addition, you can get a pretty good idea about a place's cleanliness based off what you can see going on in the kitchen. The cook was wearing gloves while scrolling on his/a phone and didn't change those gloves to make our food. Additionally, he went to the restroom with the gloves on and while he wasn't wearing by them when he came out, but it wasn't long enough thoroughly wash your hands. The staff were sitting on the stainless steel counters where meal prep is done. Just not a place I feel comfortable eating.

A lot of places double up on the tortillas for this reason, but no need here. We ordered the birria, carnitas, and cabeza tacos, chicken sopes, beans, rice, sweet plantains, sweet rice pudding and horchata. Standouts were the carnitas and cabeza for me - very delicious in their simplicity, the meat is seasoned and cooked to perfection. Birria was also very good but overhyped IMO (novelty factor). The chicken sopes were way bigger than expected, could easily be a meal on its own and the masa tart was pretty good. Our table liked the green sauce to add zip to the food. It was very sunny when we went, so it was blinding and hot to be sitting inside, hope they install a shade at some point. They seem to only serve in takeout containers, so eating at a table requires getting a bit creative for a "plate" etc. There's a small lot behind the building and street parking is pretty easy. I will definitely be returning to try the lengua and more things next time!
