I don't know where to start with Tacos Lupita, for starters they have the kindest staff, the service there was clean and quick. The food was excellent! I ordered a carne asada burrito and it truly felt like I was in México. The first bite was filled with flavor, their horchata was homemade and I felt the same feeling when my mother makes it. God bless her. The experience was amazing. Definitely recommend to anyone who wants to sit, have a nice bite to eat, and feel like loved and cared for. They have two locations, one in Lawrence and the other in Haverhill. I always get the burrito with chicken and sometimes the steak. The reason for the 3 stars is the food is average not much flavor on the meat but when you add guac, sour cream, cilantro, salsa, rice, black beans or brown, and cheese than that blend tastes a lot better. Whenever I review Mexican food, I always like to preface my review with the fact that I was born and raised in SoCal, so if there is any one type of food that I have had a LOT of, it's authentic Mexican. I usually open up this way to explain why I am so critical, and why I am knocking off stars... well my friends, Tacos Lupita deserves nothing fewer than five of them; we may as well be on the Mexican border. Few places serve beef tongue (lengua), so a jumped at the chance at a giant beef tongue burrito for under $6. Beef tongue is generally chewy, as it is easy to cook wrong, but this was perfect. Wonderfully seasoned and married with rice, beans, some pico, and guacamole. Awesome! My wife had the three tacos plate which was equally delicious. We both made equal notice of how wonderfully fresh the tortillas tasted. They quickly steam them, something that separates the men from the boys in mexican cuisine. They DO take cards, but they make you run the machine yourself, which was kind of different. They don't speak much english, so you will either have to point to things, or say the order in spanish (the menu is in both spanish and English). No worries. My only regret is not having come here sooner. We have lived in Lawrence for almost eight months and this was our first visit. We will definitely be back. Many, MANY times. Well paint me white and call me Gringo! Who knew that Mexican food (heck, any food!) could be awesome, inexpensive and quickly prepared... all at the same time and place? I'm a veteran (and major fan) of the Lynn branch of the Tacos Lupita, but this place in Lawrence is a different experience. In Lynn, at least when I've been there, it's a hustle bustle mix of dine in and take out orders; there's a line to order, a pretty good wait for the food, and there is more of a real dining room feel to the eating area. The staff brings the food to your table, and the dining area, though not elegant, is adequate and has a variety of table sizes. The Lawrence Lupita's has more of an old McDonald's feel, or a local pizza shop where you walk in through the seating area, you get your own drink from the stand up display, order at the counter, and take it back to your seat. But, SO WHAT??? The food here - a Chorizo torta, 3 tacos (chicken, carne asada, and beef) and a Horchata were all fantastic. I won't go into detail as to the make up and sublime wonderfulness of a Chorizo Torta or Lupita's chorizo in general. I did that in my Lynn review, so go read it if you're curious. Anyways, if I spend any more time thinking about it I'm going to stop writing and go get another; I'm getting hungry thinking about it, and getting cranky that I don't have one. And, it doesn't matter what anyone says, not even an eloquent scribe such as I, you just gotta taste it to get it. What blew me away about the Lawrence location was the way the guy made my tacos. He deftly assembled 3 sets of soft corn tortillas in a Styrofoam box (each taco actually has two tortillas) and then, in a flash, dropped in a spoonful of each of the different meats, bang, bang, bang, asked "with everything," answer "oh, yeah," bang, bang, bang a spoonful of premixed lettuce, tomato, etc., in each, asked "Hot?" answer "oh, yeah!") bang, bang, bang, flip the lid and out we go. Tacos Lupita is an example of one of the most SoCal burritos I have found since I moved here. I was recommended to this place by my roommate. It's fantastic. The chicken is juicy, the burritos are big, and this place is very cheap. I also LOVE the chorico burritos. Oh, and the staff is VERY friendly and helpful. I recommend the verde sauce over the rojo sauce. Their default is rojo, so shout verde before they make an irreversible decision. For the City of Lawrence, the food is unmatched. As a guy who grew up with Mexican food I can honestly say that this place does it right. It's funny because I had to move all the way out to Lawrence from Back Bay to finally find a yummy Mexican food place. The 5 stars is for the food, I want to make that clear. The environment and setting in general isn't upscale but it doesn't really matter for the food. Sure my friends and I, who were dressed in shirt and ties, were a bit out of place when we came in to eat after a conference pulling a few tables together but no one gave us a hard time. Being vegan there aren't a lot of quick options for me so I tend to stick to Mexican if I don't feel like dining out. I like this place a whole lot better than Chipotle. I find that it is more fresh especially the tortilla itself. It's also a plus the people who work here actually know how to wrap a burrito so that the contents don't fall out everywhere lol. I'm not a fan of their guacamole but the pico de gallo is good. I wish they had more veggie friendly options for protein but overall I don't have any complaints. Tacos Lupita is my favorite Mexican spot, and arguably the best mexican spot in the North Shore aside from Casa Vallarta when you factor in value. Great flavor, problem is it is dry and sometimes old. 3 star for chicken. Bland. I can't eat pork so no comment on that, and I don't love the idea of lengua because I'm soft. Quesadilla, tacos, or huaraches are your best bet imo. If you're getting a burrito you're a novice. Quesadilla is a burrito but 10x better. Only complaints I can see people having is their guacamole is diluted with something. I don't mind because it doesn't cost extra. The sign of authentic mexican. Additionally some may find it dirty.
