Came in on a sunny Saturday, had an amazing latte. I'm not a big coffee drinker but I was able to order a normal latte without any of the usual bitterness I've come to expect. Friendly baristas, too. Only thing was, no iced drinks until April 1st! read more

These were the rudest employees I have come across in a long time. We had a nice meal across the street and I noticed this coffee shop and thought it would be nice to purchase a pound of coffee and maybe make it a tradition if the coffee was good. It was obvious from the moment we stepped in the shop that we were not wanted there. They made it completely uncomfortable because we obviously were not a part of their "click" crowd. As new customers we asked some questions about the coffee and they were anoid to answer anything. We did end up purchasing some coffee, but will never be back and I will let my friends know to not go there. Such disrespect. My husband opened the door for an employee as she was taking out the garbage and she rudely said "I don't need you to open the door for me"....totally uncalled for. read more

Like Valhalla's owner, I, once upon a time worked for Starbucks when it was micro (17 locations!). Since its quest for total world domination and along with the buy local movement, I keep to smaller establishments. Bar none, Valhalla serves the best espresso drinks I have ever had during my forty plus years of world-wide coffee drinking. Every cup is moan-producing. Every barista a true artist. Coffee was fine, but the selection of syrups and sauces to accompany it is sad. You'd think with high quality beans, they'd want to offer high quality coco powder or caramel sauce, but they just have Davinci syrups. The baristas were semi-friendly. Valhalla makes the best coffee in Tacoma, period. I have mixed feelings about being exposed to Valhalla. On one hand they have made the absolute best espresso I have ever had, and on the other hand it makes me incredibly disappointed if I ever have to get coffee anywhere else. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, they know their roasts and espresso techniques backwards and forwards. I have recently switched to buying their whole bean coffee due to cuts in my budget, but I have not been disappointed. Their regular coffee is just as good as their espresso. My only wish for the cafe is to have more seating room, this is not a place where you can bunker down and get work done while drinking great coffee, it is definitely more of a get your coffee and go type of place. read more

The actual coffee shop may not be ideal (because its too small, and sometimes I don't want the intensity of smelling the roaster which is literally 10ft away) but wins for my all around favorite in town anyways. Also, fancy coffee machine and baristas who are well trained and work under a picky roaster boss means very low chance of bad shots. read more

What an incredible cup of coffee. I had a large Americano in a mug with room, and it was perfection. They are pretty much a 'roaster tasting room', if that's a thing. Meaning that they don't have a lot of stuff like muffins and whatnot. They pretty much specialize in fresh roasted whole beans and well prepared coffee from top-notch baristas. Very comparable to the best coffee places in Seattle like Vivace, Lighthouse or C&P Coffee. read more

Been here my last time, after probably 20+ visits in the last 12 months. They often make good coffee, but 1. they don't know the difference between a latte and cappuccino, 2. they argue about it every time I order a cappuccino. Normally, they do a pretty good 8oz cappuccino. However, they refuse to make a 4 shot cappuccino in a 16oz cup because they say that it's a latte. So, today, they corrected me (again) in front of other customers to tell me that "actually, since you want 2 8oz cappuccinos [to keep the proportions correct because they won't make a 16oz cappuccino] what you actually want is a 16oz latte." Sorry, ladies, a cappuccino has double the foam, ergo half the milk, as a latte. The cappuccino, because it has half the milk, allows the flavor of the coffee to come through. The larger size is because I want more of it, with all the milk it tastes like warm sour milk, as the drink I just bought from you and threw away. Some people like 16oz lattes with 4 shots, I however don't, and that's why I didn't order it that way. But hey, it's your show. If you go here, just have them make you something and pay for it after you get it, if you end up liking it. read more

Since leaving my days of drinking "Evilbucks" behind me I have been searching all over Seattle and Tacoma for a new coffee spot. Wanted to go local this time and find a spot with great coffee, I mean really great coffee, a good vibe and freindly folks. I feel like I won the lottery today after finding Valhalla! Pulling up I could smell the tempting aroma wafing in through my open window. They have a roaster right there on site. Heaven. The selection of whole bean coffees is top notch. The drink I had was very hand crafted and made with pride. (and even pretty!) The service was professional, prompt and personal. And the drink, let's go back to that. YUM and the capital letters so intentional! The milk is frothed to perfection. It's a vailla latte I am still sitting here and savoring. The kind I want again. And again. And again. I am from out of town so not knowing what to expect but assuming Seattle area was home of great coffee. First morning I went to Bluebeard which has poor coffee and mediocre pastries. Valhalla has pretty good coffee - but not great. They do a pour over with fresh beans. Limited selection of beans, but good. Bought some to drink back at our rental for the weekend. They have no food and there is limited seating. Nice vibe and friendly folks. Would have given 3.5 if I could. Adding just one or two good pastries - one scone and one croissant would make a difference. read more
