Very intimate 8 seater omakase restaurant in the center of Alameda. It is very low-key compared to other places which makes it special. Love that we can see everything the chef is doing. The fish is so fresh and each piece is curated beautifully. Simple but very impactful on the taste buds. You can tell that the chefs take their time and treats each piece with care. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

The small unassuming entry way will make you think you're breaking into someone's house but it's perfect for that intimate feeling as well. Once you find the right door it's a super chill vibe in a small space. The chef was preparing everything as we walked in and the server sat us down. The food was super fresh and the chef was very kind. There were 13 different sashimis served along with 6 additional courses of non sashimi items. Very nice service and amazing meal, left full and happy!

I've been wanting to try this omakase place for the longest time. Finally found someone to go with to enjoy this delicious meal with me. This omakase came with many dishes, almost 20. The price was great, especially for someone who isn't sure whether they'll enjoy omakase style meals. The fish tasted amazing. The staff and the chef were incredibly friendly. Our seating was late at 8pm and it was only me and another friend, which was kind of awkward for us, as we felt all the attention were towards us. The place was smaller than I expected inside but it was comfortable. The place is a bit difficult to find. It goes through a small door and leads upstairs to the restaurant. Parking was not too difficult to find either during that time. It's probably not my most favorite omakase spot but for the price, you can't beat it.

I came here with my boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary, and it was such a special experience. The space is small and cozy, with seating for only about 10 people. We booked online, and it ended up being just the two of us for the tasting so it felt very intimate. We enjoyed a 13-course menu featuring incredible fish like barracuda, golden eye snapper, fatty tuna, and uni. The standout for me was the A5 wagyu nigiri - slightly seared and melted in our mouths. To top it off, they surprised us with a little jelly dessert to celebrate our anniversary, which was such a thoughtful touch. The food was excellent, the service was attentive, and the overall experience was memorable. It was such a perfect way to celebrate for a couple of sushi lovers!

Been wanting to check Utzutzu out for a while. Finally went with friends and it was a great experience because we had the whole place to ourselves. The chef was very informative and super fun to watch as he rolled up our sushi bites. I was a bit worried about our seating arrangement as I was sitting super far from the person I was sharing a sake bottle with. HOWEVER, the waiters had us covered and refilled our cups as soon as it was looking low. Great experience.

My bf took me here for my bday. This place is a hidden gem for sure (literally). They have an unmarked stair case leading to their restaurant. Reserve online - they have two seating services of 8 people at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm. Cost is $145 per person. Everything was so delightful and well put together. Loved every bite and there was a lot of them. The chef described every piece wonderfully so you know what you are eating. I was very full and happy leaving the restaurant. I would definitely come back for celebrations!

Intimate little sushi spot in alameda that only seats 8 people at a time. We came for friday night dinner and took us maybe 5 minutes to find a decently close parking spot. The entrance is kind of hidden in that you need to walk up an unmarked set of stairs to get to the entrance. Highlights: Kanpachi, All the tuna (akami, chutoro, otoro), Botan Ebi, Toro handroll Misses: I felt like some of the bites could have used a bit more salt/flavor or some more vinegar/sweetness in the rice to contrast the fish a bit more. Especially for the wagyu piece, the meat was quite fatty but needed a bit more salt to really make the fattiness shine.

Little bit of some nostalgic decoration.

Alameda is a little island that has so many hidden gems my friend who was born and raised here brought me. She frequented this place when it had the original owners and was a take out place as well. This is an omakase I would do again and dream of the day I can go again. It's small and only has sushi bar seating so make sure you make reservations. I loved the selection of fish as they were very unique or fish I haven't tried before and executed perfectly the uni chawamushi is something I wish I could have a whole pot of. Looking for this restaurant is easy to miss as it's almost unmarked and on the 2nd floor.

Favs were the sweet shrimp, uni, waygu and toro nigiri! Wish there were more desserts. IG: @sierra_notnevada

A fair-valued okimari (like omakase, but with more than just sushi) counter in a very-hidden (unmarked and up a flight of steep stairs) location that is substantially cheaper than similar-quality spots in San Francisco. Nothing stood out as extraordinary, and the fish selection was exactly what you'd expect (shima aji, hotate, uni, different types of tuna, and wagyu). The chef is friendly and attentive to the guests; he's working solo, with two servers working mostly on water/alcohol, and bringing out the non-nigiri dishes. It's a wonderful restaurant that doesn't necessarily surprise, but if solid sushi at an affordable price is what you're craving, and you don't want to deal with the nightmare that is parking in San Francisco, this is a great option.

What is the corkage fee?

$67

Hi, how do I make reservations?

Resy.com

Does anyone want my Resy for tomorrow night 12/9 at 5:30?I have a work conflict and can't reach anyone at the restaurant?

Is it still available?

Is proof of the 'vax' still required in October '22?

No, it wasn't requested when my wife and I were there.

How can I make reservation? I am trying to reserve through Resy for two people and it's always no available seats for an entire month

I called and they said they only take reservations on Resy which open at midnight everyday for each day they add

How much is the set menu now?

$145 plus tip and tax. Drinks separate.

How much is it per person now?

$145 as of Jan 2024 plus tip and tax

Is this establishment still open?

Yes

Is it still Chef Joji?

No it is Chef Hiroto now.

How can we contact them if we have questions?

Either call using the listed number or send an inquiry through the Delage (sister restaurant) website.

How do I make a reservation?

Through Resy

Has it reopened yet?

Yes. Just reopened this week

How do you book a table?

Utzutzu takes reservations through Resy

Is this the same owners as Yume Sushi?

No it's not, past owner has retired.

Are babies and strollers allowed in the restaurant?

I don't think they restrict kids, but you need to walk up a flight of stairs to the dining room, and seating for dinner is around a bar so the baby would need to be parked behind in the lounge area. For the price, I really wouldn't recommend…

How long is the meal?

The whole dinner will be around 2-2.5 hr

Have an upcoming reservation, can we bring a bottle of wine? If so, how much is the corkage fee?

On their menu, they list corkage fee as $30, magnum bottles are $50.

How many courses (items) are included?

About 8 courses (2 of those courses is the chef's sushi selection)

When: Weekday dinner What: Pork Belly Don, and Beef Udon…read moreExperience: Find the food here being a mix of Japanese and Chinese food. I did not have any sushi so I won't be able to comment on that. Pork Belly Don was on the fatty side for my preference so end up needing to cut fat portions out before eating. Which is fine with me since I know there may be people who would like it. However, the taste was a little too salty and it did taste a little towards soy sauce pork belly, with the only difference that theirs is also very garlicky. Beef udon had reasonable udon though the beef was lacking in flavor. The beef meat could use some light seasoning before cooking so that it's more appealing vs being bland. Good customer service. Granted we were the only one eating in, while there were people doing take outs, they had good customer service. We left an item and didn't even notice, but they called us from our reservation info to get the item back to us - which I appreciate a lot. Due to being the only people eating in, it was on the quieter side with music playing in the background.

Normally I don't like to mention a language barrier and to be honest I don't even know if that's the issue or the server is just incredibly forgetful but we had to explain thing on multiple occasions and ask for the same thing many times over. We ordered many items from both the kitchen and the sushi bar. Mind you we were 1 of 3 tables and one of those tables have already been served and the sushi orders (2 rolls and nigiri) took FOREVER. The waitress was nice and all but many errors were made. The restaurant was nice and spacious above been here many times when it was a different place. This place has changed hands many times. Maybe the rent is high? Or maybe this location is just cursed as it's been 4 different restaurants as far as I can remember in the last several years. Lots of operational improvements can be made here.

It's a cute little spot and aesthetically pleasing. I believe it's a kitchen hall where multiple restaurants are combined into one? You're able to order curry, dim sum, Japanese sandwiches, bento boxes, etc in one spot. Theres indoor and outdoor seating. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were seated where the cushion chairs were. Then we scanned a QR code on the table and started a group order/tab. I was looking for some comfort food during these gloomy days so I ordered the Japanese curry with katsu which came with miso soup. Our food was served through a robot was pretty cool! The curry was good! My total for two curries with katsu, including tax and tip came out to be about $50. I'm rating this place a 3.5 due to our table not being wiped down prior to being seated, there were crumbs on it and our server just picked some of it up but did not wipe down the table. Other cushion seat tables were also not wiped down and the cushion seats had crumbs and stains on them. A family came in and their high top table was wiped down . We also didn't have any napkins in our holder so I did have to get up and grab it from another table. But I would come back and try this place again, maybe during the weekend.

My friend didn't realize I texted her back that we would come so they didn't set the table to include use but there was a bit space for us to sit then later the table next to us opened so we were able to have more table room by then. They are very pricey to begin with and I know that with big groups they would add a so called service charge which is pretty much the tip to all customers point of view so don't expect more than that. Yet their bill still gives a suggestion for more tip. I did add a little more because they made it work for us to be with my friend's group but the suggestion for extra tip is definitely ridiculous to be honest. The service was ok, our server seems to have a lot of table inside and food was delivered later than expected. So again to service fee us makes it like it is just to expensive to eat out when the place is very simple. The area we sat was nice and private for us because we took up all the seats in the patio area but they moved the table setting away from the ocean view that ended up being open space. Their patio is indoors so it wasn't cold there. It seemed like guest wanted to sit inside even though there was an extra table available by us after we took the other big groups table. The bill looked crazy and I'm glad the server made a separate bill for my group. It's not like she didn't make much from us nor did she do so much. She did get everyone's order right. The timing was a bit much for some but I planned it to where we could share a bit with my girls. Food was delicious leftovers were ok Their restroom is located by the kitchen area so you might feel like your in the wrong place but it's there Parking is usually full but it's an outdoor mall area with tons of parking...walking a bit isn't bad.

Cafeteria style - pick what you want - and customize with sauces and green onions and tempura flakes. Big signs around the dining room instruct you on how to eat and what to do. Unique drink option from Japan - soda - with glass ball lid - made for a take home souvenir and will be a future vase. Tempura and noodles that are 50' long in length. No kidding. You will get this great big bowl of noodles - but I have this theory there was just one noodle in the bowl. We tried to share and there was no beginning and no end to any given noodle. We were fishing around for this noodle and it reminded me of this scene from Mrs Doubtfire where they were trying to get teeth out of a beverage.... a tricky task indeed. Fresh from scratch - made in house Udon noodles and Tempura foods are the star. Outstanding value and casual dining as a result of cutting out the servers. These days I think we will see more and more of that. Cut the fat. Cut the middleman. A server - or anybody in the service industry should add value with a smile and good manners - ever since the pandemic you don't see that. Typically the servers are rude, bad mannered and simply just there to spread germs. To this day the only people in the service industry I enjoy being around are bar tenders. I suppose they were hired in the first place for personality alone. The one thing I really liked about Panera was how they only hired top tier helpers. They never hired less than the best. The people working here seemed equally as good - they had passion for noodles and all the little details were there. I particularly liked how they warmed the bowls with hot water before adding food in. A great place to eat solo or in big groups. Push some tables together and spend the evening there with your besties or simply by yourself on a lunch break and be in and out in a flash.

The prices were inexpensive, the udon tasted great, the service was great, and it would always be bustling inside. Now, the udon tastes stiff, prices have gone up, and it feels like a ghost town inside every time we go during dinner or lunch. Once in August, they were even closed during business hours due to, if I remember correctly, difficulties with their equipment and were unable to make udon until after 12/1pm. A situation like this is understandable for any restaurant. However, like mentioned above, it feels like the quality has gone downhill. The tempura stations are never full (sign says you can ask them to make a fresh one for you on the spot, though); there would be 4 people behind the counter but only 1 person putting together our bowls and tending to the udon on the side at the same time; the cashier sighs impatiently when a person in my party is still down the line grabbing their green onions / tempura flakes (they used to do this for you, but now we scoop them ourselves). I appreciate that they're always pushing a new dish to try to get new blood flowing. A few months ago it was a butter clam miso (?) udon, today it's a stir fry teppanyaki udon. Some days, they have curry and some days they don't. And the kicker is now for 2 regular size bowls, no side dish or drink, comes out to more than $30. We will continue to come here as I love their soup for the kake udon - it's always the best after a stomach discomfort or after a plane ride - but hoping their quality improves.

So admittedly I came here twice by accident because I forgot being here the first time. My wife and I will come into town there and again to hang out in Alameda and when we do, this is one of the better restaurants in town. Seems to me its a family operation, service is warm and friendly. Ambiance is laid back, cafe style. The menu has all the typical fare, I got the teryaki salmon meal both times and it was pretty good. Could use a little more sauce but you can always ask and I'm sure they'd be happy to provide at no charge. Also got the salmon collar which was particularly good. Prices are a little high for the area, but I would expect that given there's not a lot of sushi around, so they deserve the bump. 10$/nigiri though on some salmon is a *sconch* too high, they should do this a bit smarter. Only big things for me is just keep the hot sake HOT, it was mildly warm when I got mine, but this a common gripe I say about tons of places so not really gonna make a big deal about it. I'm on a mission to get house hot sake hotter across these lands. All in all, comparatively its great for Alameda, but would not stack up at these prices anywhere in Oakland, or SF. An excellent option of convenience if you don't feel like traveling.
