I love the vintage wood entrance and counter of the diminutive govt facility. You can cross the lobby in about four steps! The post master, a young lady, was super nice and friendly! I loved this one! It suited me to the letter! Bremo Bluff was established in1636 and Robert E. Lee's family considered this quiet area a haven during the Civil War. The actual bluff is quite a site! There's a stately plantation of the same name here, dubbed by the owners from the ancestral home Braemore in the UK. Now populated with about 700 people, it has a rich history. If you ever come to this are in Fluvanna County, be sure to see the bluff and go to the post office! It needs a lick of paint and some landscaping to make it 5 stars!! Hours M-F 12:00-4:00, Sat. 10-12, no passport services.

The town is old fashioned, with a homey pharmacy up the street, a couple of local red, and a few businesses and home to the military school Fork Union Military Academy. One business was right on time! The $ General came in handy when my phone died and I had to buy a car charger! Thanks Fork Union! Back to the post office, there are some local newsstands outside, inside there's a greeting card kiosk and plenty of mailing and shipping supplies. A big messy bulletin board is covered with local news, business cards, and flyers. The people here are friendly and helpful. The exterior is fabulous! The cream and rust colored paint, the tree trunk columns, the wrought iron- all add the the charm and allure of this post office, which used to be a general store. I love when government post offices are unique and have so much character! Inside is an incredible museum of the post office, with antiques, old photos, and lots of wood and brass fixtures, even a wood stove! Cameron, the postmaster, was kind enough to give us a mini history of the area and welcomed us like we were old friends! They sold the elephant stamps which I hadn't seen before! The population has fluctuated sometimes as high as 100, but the number tends to dwindle. Yes, the history of this tiny unincorporated place on the map has some cool history: this was the location of the Rassawek, a Monacan Indian Nation settlement. English settlers occupied the area and it was used as an arsenal for awhile. In 1788 the town became incorporated, and was a shipping stop for the tobacco trade. Then by the 1950's due to the decline of the railroad and natural disasters many homes and buildings were either destroyed, flooded or abandoned. The mayor proposed to disincorporate the town in 2014 and eventually passed in 2016 as money couldn't be raised to save the historic town. Main Street now looks like a ghost town, with dilapidated buildings, the haunting remains of the railroad, and just a corner market and the post office hidden down a side street. The post office is charming and well cared for despite its rundown neighbors. Inside it's clean and bright. It's a shame this place couldn't make it because the St. Joseph's church is beautiful and has some remarkable statuary and a popular shrine, also many of the houses in the neighborhood are stately and elegant. It's tucked aways back off the main road with a few parking spots, and a flagpole out front proudly waving the ol' red, white and blue. Inside is bright and clean, well stocked packaging center, post office boxes for rent. Anthony Trollope, prominent writer of the Victorian Era, mid-1800's, is given credit to the widespread of neighborhood mailboxes at the corners of the London streets. This creative idea then spread to America! In London, the boxes were originally green but they blended in with the scenery too well, so the "pillar boxes" were then painted bright red so they can be seen from afar. Here in the states, street boxes were also painted an olive drab green, but in 1955, the colors were changed to red, white & blue. Then, in 1971, the US Postal Service, decided to change them to the deep royal blue we see today! Anthony Trollope is a man of letter for sure!! Lobby hours are 9:30-4:30 M-F, and 9:00-12:00 Sat. Staff here is always friendly. Super, southern friendly! Lol. For the most part, I've never seen more than two other customers here. But I've also never been here around rush hour.

My regular mailman had the day off and I just happened to be grabbing the mail and saw that the package was not delivered. We tracked it and saw it was being sent back the the sender, so we rushed to the post office. The person behind the counter got the tracking info from us and decided to check for it and found it right away. Another time recently my mailman saw me near the mailbox and gave me a shout because he had a package that was too big for my mailbox and would've had to be picked up from the post office otherwise. This location does get really busy, there are a lot of apartments nearby in walking distance. Sometimes they are understaffed, but that is the case almost everywhere. Everyone I have worked with here has been professional.

It is now Feb 9 and all 4 pieces are sitting in a USPS "transfer point" undelivered. That's more than $40 paid the USPS wasted. Granted there was a major snow storm in this area on Jan 24 (9 days after I mailed the 4 pieces), but roads (and runways) have been cleared for days. I was warned about government inefficiencies in this part of VA before I moved here. Now I've experienced it first hand. The question I ask is, why do people here put up with it?
