Our initial wait (this Friday mid morning) was very brief, about five minutes. We were helped by Jamila Harris. Instantly the customer service was top notch. She was sweet to my girls, friendly and knowledgeable to me. There was an unforeseeable snag that came up w my daughter's documents, which Ms. Harris worked to resolve. She kept us informed of the progress as it unfolded. I'm really glad we finally have a DMV in Ashland and I'm sure to return here for future needs.

I prepared in advance by compiling the required documents, applying online, and scheduling an appointment. There was no one in line to check in on Monday at 3 pm so my documents were reviewed and I was given a number within a minute or so. They called the number out before I could even sit down to wait. I was then informed I was directed to the wrong desk, so that person put my number back in the system and before I could sit down yet again, a different desk number was called out for me. The guy who helped me was pleasant and we engaged in some small talk during the process, which I think is again a first for me at the DMV. I completed the eye test successfully, had my picture taken, paid the fee, and was on my merry way. This all took place within the span of 15 minutes. Enter from the building front center, exit through the side door. So easy.

Anyway, these folks are here to do their job, which is handling the paperwork we don't want to deal with. Do your part. Make an appointment if you can. If you don't, your wait time will increase. If you're in a rush, you're doomed and that's not the DMV's fault. Checked in. Got into the speedy lane because I made an appointment. The woman at that station was strictly business and fast (bless her). When my number was called, the next clerk handled everything else quickly and cleanly. In and out in 25 minutes. It was packed, but the screens were moving, the speaker was calling numbers, and the whole place was in motion. Great job, DMV 610 JW Drive. I arrive at a…read morecrowded office and mumbled number announcements, and if you're not paying attention to the numbers on the board, it's easy to miss your number being called, so don't turn away from the board! As it began to get close to Closing Time, the services sped up, so that the workers could hurry and get off work. They even JOKED about how they were ready to leave, and they laughed as if they were comedians in there...they even started announcing the numbers verbally to speed up the process...someone should have been doing that the whole time. And when I did finally get to the desk, the first thing my person said was that she "was ready to go home" (another laugh with her co-workers), and after 3.5 hours, I was able to leave WITHOUT what I went there for! Totally disappointing...I left, went outside, disgusted and smoked to calm myself down, only to see the guy who was waiting beside me come out DISAPPOINTED AND UNSATISFIED, as well, with the same result..."Come back tomorrow". Awful, Awful Service!!! I'll be going back tomorrow, but at 4:20pm, when the servicing is faster!!! Then, hopefully, it'll be another 10 years before they see me again!

I made the mistake of not making an appointment and was there to apply for a new ID in total for a minimum of 6 hours. I wouldn't still be bitter about this over a year later, but thanks to the red headed woman with a (Russian?) accent who took and accepted the very first rushed photo that I WAS MID BLINK, I now have to explain this very lovely experience to every single person I show my drivers license to. People literally bust out laughing when I show them and insist I go retake my photo. I'm so irritated because I had to, by law, go in person to apply for the real ID but my id is also expiring pretty soon so thanks to this incredible awesome and talented patient woman I have to take another photo only a year later. I wish I was being overdramatic I truly do, but it looks like a mugshot or that I'm on drugs??? Please fire this woman. I don't even live in the area anymore but I still think about this lady with frustration because she couldn't have taken one more minute to ensure there wasn't hair in my face/eyes and that I wasn't BLINKING. I visited the Charlottesville DMV where stood in line and waited for over 40-minutes just to find…read moreout where the Disabled Veteran plates I ordered (3- weeks prior) were. I even brought my VA Letter just to make sure there were no hold-ups (I already have Disabled plates for my motorcycles and a Handicap placard for the truck I was ordering the plates for). The DMVNow website stated that they required required either a signed Physician Form (submitted years ago) OR a VA Letter for this order. After a lot of furtive activity on their part, and checking their computers, I was told that I should expect the plates in the next couple of weeks. I asked if they should take a copy of my VA Letter just in case. But they would not accept it because "they don't know what to do with it". The following week, more than a month after I placed my order, I decided to follow up on this by going to a smaller "DMV Select" facility in Madison. Those ladies in this office were so much friendlier and much more helpful. While they could not determine why I have not received my plates, they took my VA Letter and the plate purchase receipt and sent it to the main DMV office anyway. They also offered to re-order my plates if in case it got lost in the mail. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE CHARLOTTESVILLE DMV - go to the Madison DMV Select office if you can. However, the Orange DMV Select is another story entirely.

Wish us luck !! LATER THAT DAY: well the positivity didn't last long. An hour and 38 minutes after arriving on time for my son's road test, we left empty-handed. I'm just seriously so drained by this DMV experience I can barely bring myself to recount the details. Lemme cut & paste a text I sent in real time: Went to dmv @ 10 this morning for his road test w the effing STACK of docs we were told about. They looked thru & said they needed a bill in his name. Ok he's 16. Anyway we signed him up for the 3 o'clock slot. Got back here at 3 o'clock waited 30 minutes for them to start inventing new requirements. Unfortunately in the docs I included an almost random old letter from the county and this letter brought everything to a hault because it says, as a home ed student, he needs to take the online course, which he DID take, and one of the documents I am including is the certificate of completion. Now, we are in circular logic hell. They have us waiting AGAIN. Its been over ninety minutes since we came back for his appointment. Cant leave cuz the agent disappeared w all our docs. This is dumb.

This location is more like a satellite location rather than an actual location. Some of the reps are extremely friendly and others are robotic and just performing their job. A few smiles and some kindness go a long way. Quite a few of the reps tend to be grumpy. They need to leave their issues in the car before clocking in to work. If they don't want to be here working, then they should look for work elsewhere. If I didn't have to take some things back to the car dealer down the street, I would have NEVER stopped at this location for service. If you come here, pack your patience and expect a very, very, very, very, very, very long wait!!
