I visited the Charlottesville DMV where stood in line and waited for over 40-minutes just to find out where the Disabled Veteran plates I ordered (3- weeks prior) were. I even brought my VA Letter just to make sure there were no hold-ups (I already have Disabled plates for my motorcycles and a Handicap placard for the truck I was ordering the plates for). The DMVNow website stated that they required required either a signed Physician Form (submitted years ago) OR a VA Letter for this order. After a lot of furtive activity on their part, and checking their computers, I was told that I should expect the plates in the next couple of weeks. I asked if they should take a copy of my VA Letter just in case. But they would not accept it because "they don't know what to do with it". The following week, more than a month after I placed my order, I decided to follow up on this by going to a smaller "DMV Select" facility in Madison. Those ladies in this office were so much friendlier and much more helpful. While they could not determine why I have not received my plates, they took my VA Letter and the plate purchase receipt and sent it to the main DMV office anyway. They also offered to re-order my plates if in case it got lost in the mail. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE CHARLOTTESVILLE DMV - go to the Madison DMV Select office if you can. However, the Orange DMV Select is another story entirely. read more

One of the most consistently disorganized and frustrating places I've ever dealt with. The staff seem completely disconnected from what's actually happening in the waiting area, communication is awful, and the entire process feels chaotic from start to finish. There's no sense of urgency, no accountability when mistakes happen, and customers are expected to just accept wasting hours of their day because of poor management and incompetence. Even simple issues somehow turn into unnecessarily long ordeals. I understand DMVs aren't known for being enjoyable, but this place takes it to another level. If there's another location you can go to, save yourself the headache and go there instead. read more

A 5 star review for the DMV? What in the world!? Booked an appointment online last week for 10:00, I rolled up at 9:49, and I left at 9:58. Unheard of, and unbelievable. I had to write about it! I have to change my license every couple of years thanks to how often we move due to work and because I'm on a visa. I've waited 3 hours before for an address change, so you know ya girl brought snacks. But, this time, I booked an appointment online, prefilled the form, printed it out, brought it in with me, and I was out before my appointment time. Crazy! Okay so it's the DMV... if I saw a 5 star review it's probably fake. With that said, I like the new appointment system. Instead of wasting an entire day waiting for your number to be called, now you can sit in line virtually for 2-3 months to even get an appointment at all!! Honestly the DMV staff has always been rude and today was no exception, the guy groaned and rolled his eyes while doing my paperwork despite me remaining completely silent the whole time (sorry you have to do your job??) but to be honest the fact that I was in an out in under 30 minutes exceeded my expectations. Expect the workers to be totally rude but at least you don't have to sit there watching them waste your time all day anymore! read more

I had great service from Mrs. Tamikia Scott-Rush. She was extraordinarily patient and very efficient. I had been to the DMV the two days before, this was my third try to work out a new title and registration. The first time, I lacked all the paper work, but the agent was very helpful. The next day the internet was down, but third time was a charm. Mrs. Scott-Rush was very charming as well as very helpful. Even when I lacked a specific paper, she let me substitute it with another. All the while she smiled and was very pleasant. I thank God for Mrs. Scott-Rush and her assistance in registering our church van and changing the title. read more

Just kill me. They should not let the service reps doing nothing to be visible to those of us waiting for two hours on a simple title transfer. People say it's worth it for people from Charlottesville to make the hour drive to either Madison or Waynesboro and now I believe them. Next time I will go up to Madison. If the goal was to provide the worst customer service possible, then it would be five stars. I was hoping that by having to schedule an appointment and completing the paperwork online that it would be better than the usual atrocious experience. The ladies outside who checked me in were pleasant and so was the Information Desk but the last individual who had to actually work (heaven forbid) was your stereotypical rude unhelpful bitter woman who resented having to work. They must screen candidates for the most miserable unhappy rude people possible. I've worked in the Middle East and my experience in obtaining a Driver's License and an ID there was a vacation in comparison. Thanks DMV for continuing to excel in the providing horrible customer service. Your staff can't possible be overworked which is usually the excuse. Ugh. That's how I feel anytime I have to come here. Every time I've been here, the experience has been pretty poor. Of course there is always a crowd. There is so much going on all the time and so many people to be waited on and way too little people to do the waiting on. I hate to say it, but it always seems like the employees are taking the longest time possible, not in any rush, and sometimes doing nothing at all. There's not really much else to say. What's the point of an appointment time if they take walk-ins before you???? I made an appointment for TSA PreCheck at 2:30 pm. My experience at the DMV was A-OK, which I feel like is the best you can hope for. Note that the parking lot is on the opposite side of the building from where you pull in! I liked the first stop at the info desk where I was able to make sure I had everything I needed. I did have a strange interaction where there was a question of whether or not my (original, signed, not a copy, literally from the county office, issued in the '80s) birth certificate would "count". Luckily they decided it would be OK since it is the only birth certificate I have... There are lots of people waiting for many different things, so don't get too overwhelmed by the crowd. There were twelve lines and about half were open. The employees were friendly enough. There were lots of signs around advising me that I could do things more quickly/cheaply online (except, of course, the thing I needed to do). Definitely something to consider for next time, though! The website has a live-updating estimated wait time. It's definitely quickest around 9am, a little longer in the afternoon, and a disaster around lunch time. My estimated average wait online was 15 minutes, but it actually took 40 minutes, so go figure. Wifi would've made my wait more pleasant, but some online appointment scheduling would've been even better. read more

For many years I have often thought that the DMV is located in the Ninth Circle of Dante's hell. I truly believe this. The customer service line is continuously and impossibly busy. When trying to contact them by phone, sometimes a recorded voice will inform me that "all of our 200+ agents are busy helping...." and that I should call back later. I am invited to "visit our website, 'DMV Now,'" but when I do, trying to wade through these difficult-to-understand "detailed" instructions can be extremely frustrating. I have filled out the forms online, only to be "told" that for this-or-that-reason my information could not be processed. I would say that the DMV is in the Tenth Circle of Hell, but Dante only lists nine. read more

Terrible experience. I was hopeful as there was no line at the door. I get my number to get my license for VA ( have out of state license). The first number they call is only 5 numbers from me and there are maybe 15 other people sitting down. I was initially hopeful, but it has no been 70 minutes since they called someone else from my letter group, but I watch other people come in, sit down, and get called up before me. What communist system do they use here? Should have listened to peers and drove somewhere else, this is ridiculous. I rather get a ticket then come here again. read more

After moving here & making our dmv APPOINTMENT nearly 2 months ago, I was informed that because my husband & I didn't have 2 separate appointments for obtaining Drivers Licenses, vehicle registrations, ect....only 1 of us would be able to get our DriVes License register to vote. (The other was of course able to register OUR vehicles & get theirs) SERIOUSLY tho, how much effort is it to issue a 2nd License when I am standing right here. Where is the human empathy to work something so simple in. Give grace & help your neighbor. Do unto others as you want done to you & members of your own family. This place was the closest to our new home with a 45min drive 1way. Additionally the armed security guard & lack of consideration for people made my experience feel oppressive like something you would experience in a 3rd world socialist country. Horrible place to do business, avoid at all costs. When I first moved into the area, it took me three trips to get my real ID license. After waiting hours, they'd tell me I was missing something, then the next time, same thing. I finally got it on my third try, but I learned my lesson. Since then, I've used the Waynesboro DMV exclusively. Even with a half hour drive each way, I'm still saving a lot of time. One of my friends uses the Orange DMV with similar results. read more

Service representative was incompetent. Had to go home twice for different documents which I find out wasn't necessary. Train your representatives!! Oh, and your service queues don't work. I stood in line for 5 to 10 minutes and sat down to wait to be served. While not being served 3 clerks were sitting around having a chat for at least 15 minutes without serving anyone. These clerks were at windows 4,5 and 6. There were other clerks, specifically V. Gentry who served me, who were working hard, taking care of multiple customers while the lazy 3 clerks were chatting. She gets 5 stars and the 3 lazy clerks get 0 stars. I will go to Waynesboro next time I need to do business with dmv. Shame on dmv for being so careless with my tax dollars. Fire the three clerks on windows 4, 5 and 6. Today is February 3rd 2015 and the time was around 11:00. Do your civic duty and trim the dead wood from your site. Absolute worst. No stars to be given here. Waited three hours for my daughter to take her learner's permit test. Left with probably another hour before we would be taken. There is one worker who seems to know what is going on (Desk 11) and she spends most of her time trying to help the other people working there instead of customers. It was ridiculous. Welllllll it was back to the Cville DMV this morn for another round of state maintained madness. I arrived around 730am it was 13 degrees about 15 people already in line. After the doors opened at 8am and ten minutes later I was at the info desk where I complained to the lady that they only had two out of 12 service windows open and that I had been there numerous times waiting for hours never to have my number called. She told me she would get the manager the manger told me that her second shift arrives at 830am I asked her if she thought that made sense given the line forming outside at 7am and door opening at 8am. She told me they needed more people and gave me the number of District manager (Mervin Brown 434-293 5211) he was not in office but his second in command was she told me that they need people badly when I asked her to characterize the Cville DMV she said it was struggling. When will the state provide us with DMV that can actually serve the community? Best part is after I got my number and sat down the manager announced that their camera system was down state wide so they would not be able to process licenses or license renewals ALL DAY!!!!! Good thing the state has us by the #alls No Way could this place survive as a business Nice Work glad I pay all those state taxes. read more

Absolutely the worst DMV in Virgina. I have lived in many locations and this is the worse one I have ever dealt with. They are just about all rude and condescending. Don't bother looking online and bringing the required documents because when you get there it won't be enough and when you come back with the new required documents the next person you see there will require different ones. The wait is the longest I have seen. I've started going to Richmond or Waynesboro for all my DMV needs including the drive time you will be back home faster going to Waynesboro and be a lot happier because you weren't treated like a piece of trash. read more
