I even brought my VA Letter just to make sure there were no hold-ups (I already have Disabled plates for my motorcycles and a Handicap placard for the truck I was ordering the plates for). The DMVNow website stated that they required required either a signed Physician Form (submitted years ago) OR a VA Letter for this order. After a lot of furtive activity on their part, and checking their computers, I was told that I should expect the plates in the next couple of weeks. I asked if they should take a copy of my VA Letter just in case. But they would not accept it because "they don't know what to do with it". The following week, more than a month after I placed my order, I decided to follow up on this by going to a smaller "DMV Select" facility in Madison. Those ladies in this office were so much friendlier and much more helpful. While they could not determine why I have not received my plates, they took my VA Letter and the plate purchase receipt and sent it to the main DMV office anyway. They also offered to re-order my plates if in case it got lost in the mail. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE CHARLOTTESVILLE DMV - go to the Madison DMV Select office if you can. However, the Orange DMV Select is another story entirely.

It is pretty neat to be able to walk the same rooms that the third president walked and see where he spent his time. First we watched an informative movie then took the shuttle up the hill to the house. Had a 10:40 tour time which was on time. Pretty large group. Many reviews stated that the visit through the home was fast and crowded. Totally agree. Maybe they could have the tour last one hour instead of 45 min giving guests a few minutes in each room to take pictures. Cut out a few tours which could help with timing. We also got in the slave tour, garden tour and the talk with Thomas Jefferson. All tours were very educational and well done. Took the shuttle to Jefferson's grave ands walked back to visitor center. Ended in the gift shop which had an array of items.

Have kids and want to go to the Virginia Discovery Museum? You can pick up free passes here. The same is true for Va State Parks. The State Park kit includes a backpack with educational activities for kids. Interested in sewing or embroidery? Northside has maker kits that can be checked out as well. One of the services that I use are their meeting rooms. You can check out meeting spaces for 2 hours at a time. They are enclosed spaces with up to 4 people. They have a great digital library where you don't have to leave your couch. If you want it, Northside has it!

I met with Neighborhood Development Services, specifically Craig Fabio, and I was duly impressed with the exchange. I start in October, at the beginning of the 4th quarter. I was able to easily set up a meeting. I had a conversation about my business and what I'd be selling. All of my options and responsibilities were clearly laid out in paper and in voice. When I left, I had a start date, a vending license, and a home-occupation declaration, making me legitimate in my new home. Customer service is at the forefront of every desk I visited, each with a smile, an answer, and a story. I also talked with Craig about the politic of the vending on the mall, how it is under fire from a few high-rentpayers in brick and mortars, but was thrilled to hear that Charlottesville supports the rights of the less privileged and super-small business owners in town, and that vending is recognized as one of the cultural and common rights in town. This, in small part is what I love about Charlottesville.

It's a rather large facility and it was busy, but the lines were organized by a queue that moved fast. It was beautifully maintained out front, although we did see some "loitering" by the steps. It was clean and tidy on the inside, which was a bright sunny spacious lobby. There was a big greeting card kiosk and plenty of mailing & shipping supplies offered. Also, there a lots of P.O. Boxes available inside. The downside is the parking as you need to park on the street or in the nearby parking deck. The lobby is understandably only open during business hours due to the many people wandering around the mall area to keep it safe and avoid folks "squatting" inside. But perhaps for that reason, it's inconvenient for people who may need to pick up their mail after hours. Hours M-F 8:30-5:00, closed Saturday
