This Jefferson-Madison Regional Library located on Market Street in downtown is the first known…read morelibrary in Charlottesville The library was created in 1823 by a group of citizens that included Thomas Jefferson. For many years, this library was located in a building around the corner, where the Albemarle County Historical Society sits now. Charlottesville and Albemarle County purchased the old Post Office building in 1977 and after renovations and moving more than 90,000 books, the building became the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on Market Street. I found the library's unique history interesting and visited last year. Although I did not check anything out they have an amazing collection. I would encourage a visit.

Also, they are part of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library system, so you can always request books from one of the surrounding libraries and pick it up from here if they don't have a specific book you're wanting. And of course, their online OverDrive collection is fantastic and so easy to use. Everyone who works here is so nice and helpful, which really makes for a great readers' community. Repeater... the grounds on the UVA Campus are amazing…read more Walking around the grounds, I was impressed at how clean, how natural, and how tranquil the fields were. I was certainly thinking of hyping this campus to my freshman niece. While I was there for a course I took notice of how folks congregated on the lawn, and the various lawn chairs, but the grounds provided both open and covered areas for study and social gatherings. The Rotunda itself is a beautiful centerpiece surrounded by pillars and paths floored by brick. Gardens everywhere. There's a small statue dedicated to the first president of the United States. It is centrally located, with academic buildings on one side, and mix of commercial buildings (food, snacks, banks, bookstores, UVA gear... ), it's all there. If you're a student you have quick access to everything. It's very convenient. Very impressed.

Wow! Monticello is amazing, and worth a visit for literally anyone and everyone. My husband and I…read morewere in the area for a wedding, and had a few hours to kill before the ceremony. We decided to explore Monticello, and booked the 45 minute Highlights Tour. If you read through the website, they'll let you know that you could spend all day here. They are correct! There are several guided tours of different lengths and prices, and the grounds, gift shop, and self-guided exhibits are expensive too. They mean it when they say you need to be on-site 30 minutes before your tour begins, because it takes time to get up to the house from the visitors center! Lauren was our guide for the Highlights Tour, and she was great. A solid mix of informative and engaging. This quick tour was just enough to get a taste of history, and definitely leaves you wanting more. I especially appreciate the steps they've taken in recent years to educate and address slavery at Monticello, including the addition of the Burial Ground for Enslaved People. Instead of taking the shuttle back to the visitors center, we walked through the garden and it was just lovely. We also passed the gravesite of Thomas Jefferson himself, which is a great spot for reflection. The gift shop had a wide variety of books, home decor, and collectible trinkets, and we found everything to be pretty reasonably priced. Monticello is operated by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which is a 501c3 non-profit.

Or the ocean. Or animals. Or their parents and loved ones seeing their faces as they graduate from such a prestigious university. UVA is beautiful though, and, with perfect weather, the ceremonies made for a lovely day of celebrations. And trash. Water bottles, programs, balloons...........all littered on the grounds as if a mini wave of Coachella had blown through. Mr. Jefferson shed a tiny tear for the trash, but smiled upon the graduates who will go forth and Wahoowa!

The advantage of bookstores that aren't Barnes and Nobles is the better pricing and atmosphere (at least in my opinion)-- and New Dominion just didn't have either advantage on a typical B&N! The prices were more expensive than most bookstores, excluding B&N of course. Further, they didn't have a sale, clearance, or just any special sections. They did have a good selection of classics. When I asked the sales associate about a book price, which was damaged, she acted offended and gave me a shrug saying that that's just how it is. I didn't mention it being damaged, I just asked to make sure that the hardback was indeed the price listed on the cover. Many of the books they had were not in mint condition and there were not multiple copies of titles so you couldn't just select another one. Might as well save the bad parking and cramped store and head to a Barnes and Noble. I try to support small business whenever I can, but this store just didn't have any perks (that I could find) above a normal big manufacturer like Amazon or B&N. I will try to visit again one day and give it another shot.

Bottom Line: Great toy brands and tons of variety…read more My husband and I went into Shenanigans because it has such high ratings, was located a 1/2 mile walk from out hotel and its holiday shopping season. I was impressed with the size of this toy store and excited to see that they carry many of my favorite toy brands like Folkmantis, Calico Critters and Ravensberger puzzles. They had a lot of fun sounding games I hadn't heard of as well. Aside from high quality toys and puzzles Shenanigans also had some really nice seasonal stuff like Advent calendars. My husband and I explored for quite awhile and finally landed on a Jellycat branded stuffed animal for a friend. For such a lovely store I would have expected there to be a little bit more in the way of service. For the fifteen minutes we spent in there the only acknowledgement we received was three words when we checked out - twenty-three seventeen. Maybe the employee was just having a hard day.
