We were running errands in Mineral today, and dropped into the post office to pick up some Christmas-themed stamps. The USPS employee was friendly, parking was easy and sufficient, BUT they had already sold all of their Christmas-themed stamps (more than two weeks before Christmas!) So, our Christmas cards will be going out with dahlia-themed stamps!

The small town of Mineral was founded in 1890, and as you might have guessed, was named for the…read moremining industry which supported the community. Gold, zinc and lead were all mined in the area. This post office isn't much to look at... the long brick building houses dozens and dozens of post office boxes for mail delivery in this rural town. With a population of under 600 folks, you won't find this mail center very busy. The mail carriers use regular vehicles to deliver mail, rather than official USPS mail trucks. The interior is shabby, peeling walls, dingy counters and dirty floors. Shipping and mailing supplies were low, and the racks were disorganized with several boxes just strewn on the floor. There was a greeting card display which I doubt gets much action. The clerks are friendly and efficient, and seem to know most of the neighbors around town. You won't be in a gold rush here! There are a few drop off mail boxes on the side of the building. The hours are 8:30-1:00, 2:00-4:30 M-F, and Saturday 9-11. No passport services, but the usual small town services are provided. If the workers here get the "lead" out, spruce up this government building and take some pride in this place, I "zinc" they could earn some extra gold stars! But perhaps, bureaucracy is under"mining" its progress!

Additionally, the city is lovingly referred to as C'ville but if I lived here I would absolutely not say that. I really enjoyed the Historic Downtown Mall area too. Trust*…read more Charlottesville is a beautiful and historic old city that now is the focal point of the University of Virginia, started by Thomas Jefferson. It has a lot of wonderful elements and aspects to it, and is in a gorgeous setting. There are mountains surrounding the region especially in the direction of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Harrisonburg. There are some pretty delicious food treats hidden away in this town as well such as Bodo's Bagels and the amazing Tortas at Al Carbon. Not to mention the delicious burger at Riverside Grill. There's also a KFT location (get the Lemon Black Tea, or try Honey Oolong, or Winter Melon/Very Berry, both with Black Tea if they'll do it). And there's plenty more if you explore. The population has fluctuated sometimes as high as 100, but the number tends to dwindle. Yes, the history of this tiny unincorporated place on the map has some cool history: this was the location of the Rassawek, a Monacan Indian Nation settlement. English settlers occupied the area and it was used as an arsenal for awhile. In 1788 the town became incorporated, and was a shipping stop for the tobacco trade. Then by the 1950's due to the decline of the railroad and natural disasters many homes and buildings were either destroyed, flooded or abandoned. The mayor proposed to disincorporate the town in 2014 and eventually passed in 2016 as money couldn't be raised to save the historic town. Main Street now looks like a ghost town, with dilapidated buildings, the haunting remains of the railroad, and just a corner market and the post office hidden down a side street. The post office is charming and well cared for despite its rundown neighbors. Inside it's clean and bright. It's a shame this place couldn't make it because the St. Joseph's church is beautiful and has some remarkable statuary and a popular shrine, also many of the houses in the neighborhood are stately and elegant. I met with Neighborhood Development Services, specifically Craig Fabio, and I was duly impressed with the exchange. I start in October, at the beginning of the 4th quarter. I was able to easily set up a meeting. I had a conversation about my business and what I'd be selling. All of my options and responsibilities were clearly laid out in paper and in voice. When I left, I had a start date, a vending license, and a home-occupation declaration, making me legitimate in my new home. Customer service is at the forefront of every desk I visited, each with a smile, an answer, and a story. I also talked with Craig about the politic of the vending on the mall, how it is under fire from a few high-rentpayers in brick and mortars, but was thrilled to hear that Charlottesville supports the rights of the less privileged and super-small business owners in town, and that vending is recognized as one of the cultural and common rights in town. This, in small part is what I love about Charlottesville.

Here in FU (oops!) proper, there are about 900 residents with the zip code 23055. The town is old fashioned, with a homey pharmacy up the street, a couple of local red, and a few businesses and home to the military school Fork Union Military Academy. One business was right on time! The $ General came in handy when my phone died and I had to buy a car charger! Thanks Fork Union! Back to the post office, there are some local newsstands outside, inside there's a greeting card kiosk and plenty of mailing and shipping supplies. A big messy bulletin board is covered with local news, business cards, and flyers. The people here are friendly and helpful. Bumpass is French for bon pass which means good passage or good step, and this town was named after its 1st postmaster, John Bumpass. It was pretty drab inside with beige everywhere but there were some cool brass mailboxes so it got a bit of redemption from its boring interior. I know that the Bumpass branch is over whelmed with deliveries. Now saying that i received a…read moredelivery yesterday. It was left on the side of the road, at the mail box in the rain and mud. The box was in a condition from being rain on, that i got my clothes muddy, the box fail apart. If you have a delivery just call and i will be glad to come out of my house, in the rain and i walk with a cane, by the way. But i would come to get it at the road side. Even though that it would probably take me 5 minutes to come to the road I would do that. I am handicap and that is the reason i have things delivered. This is the second time this has happened. I dont go out much so deliveries are the way i get things. Please i dont normally write reviews but maybe you all need to hire more people because its apparent that your driver can not make a simple delivery. So thank you, for a wet muddy box, that you all left on the side of the road, for someone to steal.

I love the vintage wood entrance and counter of the diminutive govt facility. You can cross the lobby in about four steps! The post master, a young lady, was super nice and friendly! I loved this one! It suited me to the letter! Bremo Bluff was established in1636 and Robert E. Lee's family considered this quiet area a haven during the Civil War. The actual bluff is quite a site! There's a stately plantation of the same name here, dubbed by the owners from the ancestral home Braemore in the UK. Now populated with about 700 people, it has a rich history. If you ever come to this are in Fluvanna County, be sure to see the bluff and go to the post office! It needs a lick of paint and some landscaping to make it 5 stars!! Hours M-F 12:00-4:00, Sat. 10-12, no passport services.

That's the house you see. Now they do have an outline of the foundation of the house that was once here. So, there is that. Then the new(er) house is full of exhibits on Monroe. Honestly, I am glad I went but if you are pressed for time, it's one you can skip.
