While I have visited the historic US Post Office Downtown on many occasions, the building is unique as it is also home to Arizona State University's Downtown Campus at the same time. I will review both at the same time along with the surrounding area. First, U.S. Post Office itself also known as the "Federal Building-U.S. Post Office" was built in the 1930s and was intentionally designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. I find all of the staff who have helped me at the post office portion of the building on the first floor have been very friendly and helpful though there is often a queue during the day. The line usually goes fast, and the post office area is kept rather clean. When Arizona State University opened the Downtown Phoenix Campus in 2006, ASU took over the upper floor, basement level, and part of the first floor. ASU has the Student Center @ the Post Office on the first floor and then additional offices and conference rooms on all three levels. I have spent a lot of time on the upper floor where the Dean of Students office is as well as offices for Counseling Services, Student Connection & Community, Student Accessibility & Inclusive Learning Services, TRIO programs, ASU Police, Human Resources, and Career Services. On the first floor is the Student Center @ the Post Office (including the Undergraduate Student Government offices for and Changemaker Central) along with Facilities Management. On the basement is a space for ASU clubs and organizations, the Program & Activities Board offices, classrooms, and additional ASU academic services and offices. While the building is open from 8 AM to 9 PM on weekdays when classes are in session and 8 AM to 5 PM during breaks including the Summer. ASU offices are closed during weekends and university holidays. The only negative to the U.S. Post Office building is the challenge with security as there seem to have been a number of situations nearby right outside the north side of the building or even in the Civic Space Park on the south side of the building. Otherwise, the safety within the building is just fine, and the students, faculty, and staff at ASU still frequent the building. With a long history already between the post office itself and now ASU being there, I look forward to seeing what comes up next in the historic building! read more

It is downtown Phoenix right in the heart of downtown next to ASU's Downtown campus. I love this building because it looks like a historical post office on the outside. I feel it is one of the sites of downtown just from the aesthetics. The Customer Service is always above standards. They're very nice and patient And also for those of you who are looking they do take walk-ins for passports. It's only Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:30. I would suggest arriving around 8 AM because they only take eight people during that hour. read more

Only the epigraph on the front of the building indicates it's a post office - although the signage (and the street signs directing unsuspecting customers to the building) are deceiving. If you're not fortunate enough to visit the building during their bankers' hours, you won't have access to any postal amenities -- even though the walls are lined with PO Boxes, there's not a single person available to assist, there's not a single stamp vending machine in the building, nor even a scale to weigh your packages. And in a post office for which the US taxpayers spent a million bucks! You would think that in GOP-leaning state like Arizona, the US Post Office would try to justify their existence, especially among the elderly voters who still use the US mail, but apparently they're able to visit the post office during the handful of hours the windows are actually manned by living humans. Is it any wonder the younger generation is using emails and attachments to transmit documents, and the private sector to deliver packages? read more

This post office doesn't sell anything but stamps and tape. The employees are nice but you'll need to go elsewhere to send anything other than a letter pretty much. It's a bummer because they have enough space to have some supplies. read more

We're new to the city and noticed our mail had stopped being delivered. In addition several of my packages were being held at the post office. This was the nearest post office to our home so I showed up around 10am to sort this out. Thanks to COVID-19 it was quite empty and I didn't have to wait. The employees behind the counter wore masks and so did I, so it felt pretty safe. I met Chuck, who's mentioned in several of the reviews and he was FANTASTIC help, explaining to me that they are a retail-only location and don't hold residential mail. He told me where my mail would be and even gave me directions. What a great guy! Super committed to his job and excellent customer service in this difficult time. I have a box here....When I have been able to catch the window open, the employees have always been friendly and helpful. The hours here still bewilder me. I have had a package waiting for almost 2 weeks and either I get there too early or I am late and last night I got here about 10 till 6 and the doors were locked. The perceived convenience of this location between work and home is what will keep me renting a box here but I wish I knew the hours. 2/6/2020 And the issues with this location continue. They're supposed to be open at 9. I arrived at 9:15 to several people waiting in the lobby. No note, nothing to imply that they would be opening late. Yet the gate remained closed I left at 9:30 I had an appointment scheduled for passport last at 2:15pm. I arrived at 2:00pm with all of my document in hand and the application completely filled out. I walk up to the counter and met Chuck and another female. Both greeted me very nicely and asked what they could do to help me. I told them I had an appointment to passports today. As soon as the words came out of my mouth who ever it was that was doing passports that day yelled out "you better tell them to come back another day because I'm going to lunch". I was completely caught off guard with how rude and unprofessional this employee was. Although Chuck and the other employee made accommodations for me to go to another facility after work that same day; I was still a bit upset at how rude this person was, especially since I'm a civil servant and take great pride in making sure our citizens feel like we care about them. read more

Slowest post office ever. Both clerks are intentionally delaying with each customer. Over 10 mins in line and not one person in line has moved forward. This location is an embarrassment to the USPS and needs new management Update Jan 3, 2020 - EVEN SLOWER TODAY with only one clerk at the counter. The majority of posts cite good customer service which is accurate. (Hale & Smitty) but the hours of operation (Most are 24/7 access) and non-functioning use of the street address which all PO Boxes from USPS are allowing now. The primary reasoning for the lack of 24/7 hour access is that ASU purchased the building. ASU wanted to end the lease of the USPS after purchasing the building. A former Arizona Attorney General has a PO Box there and the constituents of a Congressman and councilman raised hell which stop ASU desire to end the Post Office as a tenant. read more

HUGE! Friendly service. Peaceful atmosphere. I wish I could remember the name of the gentleman that took care of me. Such a delightful experience. I think I recall him saying that this wasn't his regular station or something to that affect. He's white, about 6'1, white bushy hair, heavy rich voice and an angelic personality. Kind of like a grandpa or something. I don't blame the post office, but Phoenix would do well to get parking meters in their city that permit the use of credit/debit cards. I've never enjoyed going to the Post Office until I found this location. It's in a beautiful historic building and the staff is top notch. About 10 years ago, I opened a PO Box here and have been going regularly ever since. I've even opened a 2nd PO Box recently. We all have other options to send and receive mail, but I have been inspired to support the US Post Office and this location in particular because of the one of a kind service by Chuck. Chuck makes light of the expected transactional drudgery of the US Post Office. He genuinely aims to help, is absolutely delightful, knows about every quirky thing about everything and represents the essence of hospitality that we have lost in our society by and large. read more

I can't stand this post office. They deliver crap that isn't mine even tho there's a note on my box that says "Smith only". When I've complained to them, I literally was told, "Not much we can do other than the sign on the box". They send back mail that should actually come to me and now the very important delivery I was expecting today.. per the tracking # that says it would be today.. they are saying probably won't be there until tomoro. Oh but There's no access on weekends so now I can't get it til Monday. I'm so fcking done with this place! Canceling my box! read more

this post office has been a favorite of mine for many a year. but since they started routing my undeliverable packages to the fucking Van Buren Post Office i have been pissed off. i do not know why i need to go so god damn far just to find out i got a new chotchkey from Camel that was too big to fit in my mail box. waste my time. i want a refund..maybe even a complimentary roll of stamps. probably one of the cooler post offices to get a PO Box at..except you will have no access to your mail after 6pm. i have to rate it 2 stars simply on the fact it USED to be better. now it's only Meh! read more

I am Chuck and I have worked at this office for 14 years. This is not a review, but a clarification. Our retail counter hours have always been 9-5 Monday thru Friday. For security, our lobby for PO Box access has always been closed at 6PM, re-opening at 6AM every day of the year. Passport hours are 11-4 weekdays, by appt thru our website and can be booked up to 2AM the day of. The parking meters have accepted credit cards for a couple years now.
