    Entrance

Friday late afternoon, 2 windows were opened. Very weak AC, and long customer lines. Customers were frustrated from weak AC...... Entrance was nice one slope for wheel chairs or baby carriage customers and stairs. Self-service is available Selling greeting cards. Non judgmental vibes. I'd come back :) I've attached pictures.

Radio City Station. This U.S. Post Office sits in the Theater District intersecting 9th Avenue and 8th Avenues at West 52nd Street of Midtown West. Currently this location is undergoing "unexpected maintenance issue" for derelict appearance which appears disheveled. There are two (2) postal clerks behind the counter working robotically and methodically past exhaustion. It is also a shipping center for sending and receiving packages. This post office location appears rather modern of a retail environment, but not traditional booth narrow counter glass window with a curved bank slot to slip cash or letters. I always prefer the traditional booth narrow counter glass window with a curved bank slot to slip cash or transactions for its history and charm. This counter glass window also serves as safety and security for postal employees in prevention of thief and thwart assailants/perpetrators from "going postal." With two (2) postal clerks there is a long queue of anxious and eager customers waiting to be serviced. Both postal clerks appear dispirited, disgruntled and very burnt out. I was able to attain a postal money order and certified mail without intransigent to be contentious. It was an accomplished and productive visit.

In fact, the only station in the city open on Sundays and a lifesaver for those who started writing holiday cards on the Friday before Christmas. Peering into the "envelopes" mail slot, thousands of pieces of mail were visibly overflowing the sacks, requiring some gingerly wedging of my small booklet-worth of correspondence in between others. Fingers crossed all made it out ok! Shoutout to one of two staff working the two open counters at 5pm on Sunday December 21, you were friendly, prompt and helpful and put your best foot forward for terrific customer service. Only 2 counters were open and the line was about a dozen people long, steadily moving. For service--a solid 5 stars. Facilities are as expected a bit on the older side, being built in 1912 as part of the original Penn Station complex, though the modern conveniences of tap-to-pay technology and self-service weigh/postage stations are available. Waiting in line, the details on the ceiling caught my attention. Maybe because the darker evening outside accentuated the brighter interior, the simultaneously ornamental, scrolling flourishes fitted in repeating geometric patterns stood out in ways I hadn't noticed before. Come to find after some googling the ceiling is decorated with the country seals of 11 countries including the US, the countries part of the universal postal union at the time of construction, an administrative body now under the purview of the United Nations that handles international shipping policies. Not very fun facts: designated a national historic landmark in 1973 and re-named after James Farley, 53rd U.S. Postmaster General in 1982. Previously generically named the General Post Office. Slightly more fun fact: atop the facade along 8th Avenue the inscription reads, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Some may confuse this to be the creed of the U.S. Postal Service, but it's actually not. Rather, it's tied to the tribute that building architect William Mitchell Kendall paid to major historical figures credited with postal advancements. This is an excerpt out of Herodotus's 'Histories', which described the messenger system established in Persia by Cyrus the Great.

As someone who has regularly used this post office for years given its easy availability, including with a P.O. Box there, it amazes me what has developed, especially since the building now also includes Penn Station's Moynihan Hall. Yes, they do have window service every day, but 98% of the time they're slow as molasses long lines because less than optimal staffing levels. Hey, USPS, this is the city that never sleeps, yet P.O. Boxes and self-serve Automatic Centers are now closed off to the public at night!!! Why? (Note - This is despite the faster than inflation, year-after-year increase in this location's P.O. Box rental rates.) Why is the only ADA access, as far as I could find it, on the almost the. complete opposite side of the building towards 9th Avenue inside Moynihan Hall?

They actually laughed in her face when she said she had an appointment, and she overheard them making fun of her in the back about how young she looked/her size. She actually heard them say, "This b*tch looks like a fourth-grader, there's no way she has an appointment." It was extremely rude, unkind, unprofessional, and when she got upset with them for continuing to question whether she was an adult (she had already showed them proof at this point), they flipped it around on her and told her there was "no need" for her to be upset. These women should know better. They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, and to whoever is in charge of managing them, you need to look into who was working this afternoon and make sure that kind of behavior never happens again towards a customer. That was beyond awful to do to another person, and a complete embarrassment coming from two grown women. The fact that they felt it was okay to behave that way at their job is horrendous. Please do better.

Nevertheless, there are times where I need to visit one, and in those cases this is super convenient. For me, the biggest plus this post office has going for it is their operating hours. They're open from 7:30am to 7pm Monday to Saturday which is way longer than a typical branch. This makes it easy if you need to visit before or after work. This is also a huge location - tons of PO boxes and multiple self-serve kiosk stands in case you don't need to wait on the line for your service. Speaking of the line, it's there - as per usual. Despite having multiple tellers and a long queue area, I've only seen two to three people working them - even at peak times. As such, there's always a line - so just be prepared. Overall, this US Post Office is fine. I will use the self-serve kiosks as much as possible, and their expanded operating hours will make me a repeat patron.

A lot of the smaller locations only have a few customer service windows and limited self-service. Here there are over two dozen windows (though not all of them are staffed). As with many post offices the lines could prob move faster but overall it felt reasonable (a dozen odd people in line) on a Friday evening around 5pm. The overall space appeared to be generally clean and decently maintained. Nice touch to add some sculptures and artwork since mailboxes aren't very intriguing to look at. I think sometimes it's easy to judge post office clerks by their covers, they have to deal with such a wide variety of people so they've seen it all. No use being impatient as there's unfortunately not much motivation to speed things up (so many things are broken systematically in the USPS as an organization ...but that's another discussion) and it'll probably just rub on nerves for all parties. In the meantime better to just plan ahead and account for some extra time when getting in line at the post office. One of the nice things about this location is it's open late weekdays until 7pm, convenient when you don't have time before work or during the day to stop by a post office.
