I've lived in Chelsea for over 30 years, so I've been coming to this post office for a long time. Unfortunately, the service here is consistently unpleasant. The employees often seem rude, dismissive, and uninterested in helping customers--eye rolling, avoiding eye contact, and acting like you're a burden. I actually prefer to walk an extra 10 minutes to the 34th Street and 8th Avenue location, where the staff are much friendlier and provide genuinely good service. It's disappointing that the Chelsea branch, serving such a large neighborhood, can't offer the same courtesy and professionalism. read more

The woman processing my package (older lady with very short gray hair, it says Clerk 12 on my receipt) was extremely condescending and rude. She gave me attitude for checking the address on my phone instead of on the package (even though she hadn't clarified where I should check it and she had also turned the address on the package away from me so I couldn't see it). Instead of offering clear instructions she would say nothing so as to create an opportunity to chastise me for doing something "wrong". And later when I glanced at my phone again because I have a baby at home as well as elderly parents and need to sometimes check it, she chastised me ("there you go looking at your phone again!"). This employee shouldn't be allowed to interact with customers, she's incredibly unprofessional and condescending. She needs to either be relocated to a position without customer interaction or she needs some sort of basic manners and consideration training. I'm updating my review because of three positive items: [1] the USPS now list the closing time as 5:30p, in line with their actual closing. [2] when I was back in NYC and registered online for a redelivery, my heavy package was actually re-delivered on the early evening of the day I had requested, by a friendly, polite, competent professional. Yes! and [3] dealings with two local carriers, one taking a letter to mail for me and one accepting is-delivered packages, again professional and friendly. THE WORST experience. Some lady with glasses and blonde fade haircut was a massive (insert rude word) for no reason. I was kind and simply wanted to mail something. I looked at my phone to check an address since she got it wrong and she gave me nothing but rudeness telling me my "phone wasn't traveling" as another worker snickered and laughed. Actual bullies. The employees here are really rude and not helpful. It's a governmental job so maybe they don't have to be friendly but i just used the self service kiosk to mail priority mail and with no one in line, I asked if I could get a drop off receipt. I was just pointed to the giant open, not secure cart in the middle of the lobby as the employee played on her phone and said you already have a receipt. The receipt only works once it is scanned into the system and considering the location, it is entirely possible someone takes a package out of the giant open, not secure cart. I will try to avoid this one for mailing due to this process. I'd rather walk to Penn Station where at least the drop off bin is behind the counter. What a rude experience! read more

i come in here all the time to use the self service so typically i don't have to have the displeasure of speaking to the employees here. i go in today july 3rd to ship something and the self service isnt working- okay. lots of time the people working at usps have declined scanning a prepaid QR code, but i wanted to ask just to make sure. i have never been met with such attitude ever in my life. btw i am always very nice to employees anywhere. i maintained being nice but wow this woman should get penalized for how she was speaking to me. read more

I just had to mail a package to the UK. I got a very rude person who rattled off the details of the form I had to fill out, then she complained that I hadn't filled it out correctly. The right way to tell a person how to fill out a form is NEVER to treat the person as irresponsible, careless or stupid. The right way is to explain, slowly, just how to fill out the form, and be ready to answer any questions with a smile. The person intimidated me, was very accusing, when I couldn't understand what she was asking for. She kept saying I'd done it all wrong, but it would have been right if she'd taken the time to go over it slowly (I couldn't understand a lot of what she said), make sure the person understands, be patient. She'd have saved a lot of time that way. Instead, she was in too much of a hurry, and then treated me like a fool and a Jerk. She said I was holding up other customers in line and she was about to close, and I'd have to come back tomorrow, and I said no, and she very impatiently filled out the form on her end, and asked about things I had left blank (because I didn't understand what was needed) in a very rude voice. She finally finished the form after I insisted I wasn't coming back, and got it done, but I really was angry at this hostile clerk. It would have been better if she'd been patient, answered any questions without a judgmental attitude, and we'd have gotten it all done with no fuss or muss. Went to the post office on a Friday. No line. Got an African American lady who was blind as a bat and she wore glasses. Despite having a simple address on the package that was in Manhattan, she sent the package to Nyack, NY. She entered the address wrong twice. I corrected her twice. She finally said to press the button that said the address was incorrect. I finally got my package back after a week and a half. I have to send the package out again but will refuse to have her assist me. It's a wonder she has a job. read more

This place sometimes doesn't deliver mail and sometimes doesn't deliver packages :-(. When they don't deliver a package, they mark the package as "Delivery Attempted - No Access to Delivery Location", even when delivering to offices that have a front desk person there! If you call them, they say they'll redeliver but won't actually redeliver and you'll have to pick it up at the post office. I wouldn't mind too much if they'd just say they're not going to deliver it, but saying they're going to redeliver and then just holding onto the package is obnoxious. If you're unlucky, they'll deliver the package to some random location (see attached photo where a package that didn't get delivered to NYC gets tagged for re-delivery and then gets shipped to Kentucky). read more

I have come several times while preparing to mail my wedding invitations (weighing, buying postage, mailing them, etc.). Each time there is never a line on a Saturday morning. The ladies who work here have always been very friendly and helpful, making sure we got enough postage on each invite with coordinating stamps, then they processed the invites by hand to minimize damage in transit, and wished me congratulations. I took time from work to go to the post office last week on West 18th Street. I need to stop the mail for my deceased mother. No line. A very, very nasty older brown woman with glasses behind the counter did not accept the documents I presented (which were the ones on the USP website). She went in the back to speak with someone and came back tossing my ID and the documentation at me saying this is no good. Then she said unprompted that her supervisor was not there and did not know when she would return. I felt so disrespected and upset. She must have job security to act this way without consequences. I was continually harassed by an older woman behind one of the counters - to the point where another employee apologized to me for the behavior. The angry woman made a point of yelling at me for not filling in the correct form (I had just been given the form by another employee and filled it out carefully), then while I returned to the line and waited to see someone - anyone - else, she shouted across the room at me for "sitting on" a glass case which I was in fact nowhere near, and am too short to have been able to sit on, even if I had considered doing so. I lost twenty minutes of my life waiting on this long bread line at Old Chelsea post office for postage stamps!! With only three measly window clerks working at turtle pace I was aging as I stood moving one inch forward for a simple measly transaction purchase. When it became my turn at the window, the postal clerk handed me two wrinkled sheets of Chinese Lunar New Year Forever stamps at $5.52 each. How do postage workers treat merchandise as unused postage stamps that customers want to purchase? I am a avid Philatelist for years and always been fascinated by postage stamps. This one star review is for the people (or the same person) who deliver packages in the area. He or she constantly leaves packages for other addresses. I am at 223 W 19th Street, and they have been leaving packages for 233, 235 and 219 W. 19th Street, and sometimes for W 20th Street. It's either the person has a really bad eyesight or extremely lazy. This has been happening too many times; average 2-3 times a week. I wonder what happens to my packages. read more

I am a neighbor for many years, the location is very convenient, but I am done with it. Why should I put up with it anymore? Today, one of the clerks had an inappropriate aggressive behavior to say the least. Right after taking my envelope, she yelled at me that taking pictures are not allowed in a government building. I replied that I was just using my phone to show her the return label she needed to scan. She kept on screaming: "You should have told me before it was for a scan, I don't have time to waste". Then, she nervously threw me the enveloppe back, asking me to move on the side and to come back when I'll be ready (I was ready). I understood the situation did not make any sense at all, so I left and went to another clerk. All this within 30 sec. Why did it have to be this way? When are they going to train the employees to acquire a minimum of customer service mind? I was so upset I thought I would talk to the manager and report the nasty behavior, but then what? What will change anyway? I've already done it in the past. Instead, I will avoid going to that post office from now on. read more

On 4/28/23 I got a USPS tracking notice telling me that a package (containing jewelry) "was delivered to your mailbox". I never got it. I visited Old Chelsea Staition twice and submitted two Service Requests and one Missing Package Search with no result. The carrier at my PO told me "a tool" indicated that the carrier delivered it to the wrong block, and to an undisclosed address on that block. Today, 6/13 I called USPS "customer service". They told me a ) "security protocols" prohibit their telling me exactly where the package went and b) it was the SELLER'S FAULT because the seller never purchased insurance. Take the time to go to the Madison Square (149 E. 23rd St) instead of Old Chelsea. Old Chelsea has RUDE window clerks. Kathleen, an older woman clerk, was cranky, unfriendly, and uncaring. I wanted to send a military care package to a battalion in Iran. I wanted an inexpensive standard rate package. When I explained it was for men serving our country, she rolled her eyes at me and gave me an "I don't care" attitude. I went in today to send a 9" x 11" envelope with some papers in it to France today. I have sent this type of envelope many times before and it usually costs around $6.50. Today, the price initially came up at $6.47 but the woman serving me pushed something and then announced that my envelope had to be sent as a package and woud cost me $42! I said that was ridiculous. I went to the self-service machine and followed the steps for an international large envelope and sure enough, it cost me $6.47. The is the second time that particular worker has tried to overcharge me. I don't understand. Watch out for the heavy-set middle-aged woman with very short hair and very long nails. read more

Since our regular delivery person is on leave (since 10/2018 and probably not coming back- life has been a hell. My mail is not being delivered, all the neighbors magazines and various mail is tossed all over. It's not being put in the mail boxes. The substitutes are so uninterested that if there is or isn't an apt # they either send it back or leave it dumped in the lobby. This holiday season they have been arriving 9PM to deliver the mail. It's unheard of. There are several different people coming to deliver. It's a nightmare. I tried to call the Chelsea Station and of course, no one answers. I made a complaint at the Inquiry Window and was told it would be reported. Some serious training and attitude adjustments needs to be improved for the life of these workers. There must be something so deeply broken in the system and in the people that many of them seem to be suffering, in pain and callus. I wonder what drive people to become this miserable. The USPS has been, at least in this City, so crass and unpleasant. It seems to be the norm. It is with only a small minority and exceptionally few that are polite. The majority are unfortunately the problem makers and not the problem solvers. read more

If this establishment were -anything- other than a governmental institution, I can only imagine that it would have shuttered ages ago. This is the epitome of inefficiency and exceptionally poor customer experience. My (seemingly) simple mission of sending off a few letters by certified mail turned into a frustrating ordeal consisting of one fail after another: - Each of the counters offers a handy chart for which form goes along with which service; finding the certified mail form design was easy. Finding the physical forms themselves were not. Turns out that across all three counters, only the one in the far back corner had a stack. Why not distribute them amongst each counter? - None of the counters had working pens. The ballpoint pens chained to the desks were all dry. It's anyone's guess as to how long that's been the case. Fortunately, a gentleman employee was nice enough to obtain a working pen for me. - I get in the service queue to turn in my letters and forms for processing and the same helpful fellow directs me to the self-service kiosks. Great... to start with. The system is more challenging to navigate than the Global Entry ones for immigration. And... it turns out that by using the self-serve kiosks, I didn't even need to fill out the certified mail forms anyhow. Glad I went through -that- experience. - When completed with printing out my tags for each letter, the kiosk informs me to drop off my mail in the receptacle "behind the kiosk." Only... you guessed it... there's no receptacle there. And all of the obvious bins are clearly labeled "No letters." So... where am I supposed to drop my mail, exactly? - Back into the service queue I go, so I can simply hand over my fully processed and rip-roarin' ready-to-go mail with someone who can drop it into the mysteriously absent letter bin. And I wait. And wait. And... wait. - After the line doesn't move for about ten minutes, I finally do a final sweep of the entire establishment and find some mail slots for standard letters. I can only cross my fingers and hope that by dropping my certified mail in there, it'll end up getting to the right place. Walking out of the post office, I definitely regretted my poor decision of -not- paying an arm and a leg ($10 plus postage per letter) to just get it taken care of at the UPS Store. Sure, I saved myself $30 bucks, but at the cost of a portion of my sanity. read more

Old Chelsea Post Office makes one believe that there is a Newman from The Seinfeld Show and when the show went off the air he was transferred to the Old Chelsea Post Office. I have lived in the 10011 zip code since 1974 and every year I have the fantasy that Old Chelsea will improve - alas I am a dreamer. This was the worst year in history. I live in a building with over 50 apartments and not only didn't we receive mail for three days before the Christmas holiday but our mail on days that it was delivered was incomplete with one or maybe two pieces. Don't believe that you could call and get anyone to help you. The telephone call went something like this "Hi, I live at ....giving the address....and we are a building over fifty residence and we did not receive mail yesterday and the day before it was delivered at 7:30 P.M. and it only had one piece for each apartment. It is now 5:30 P.M. are we going to get mail?" Reply "Oh, hold on please" With a speaker phone you can hold on and twenty minutes, thirty minutes go by and nothing. When you call back you repeat you little speech and again you are put on hold and again no one picks up and again there is no information. So you hit the computer! You google "make a complaint about the Post Office" and no matter where you go they want a "tracking number". But, I finally got past that and put in my complaint - stressing that it was for the entire building. I finally got a call back and who called me the same person that put me on hold twice. I explained the situation again and before she said to hold on I said to her "and you put me on hold not once but twice for more that forty minutes" and she said well I will have the Manager of the Station call you. That was over five days ago and today I received three pieces of mail after 5:00 P.M. and the Manager of the Station has not called. But, the best part was the survey that I received today from the Post Office that I was most anxious to answer. I answered every question giving the worst review possible and fortunately there was a little area that you could explain your answer. Now, I am savvy enough to realize that this Survey will not be read by anyone but it made me feel a lot better giving them a bad review. There are several Post Offices in the area, including the main Post Office at 34th Street and 8th Avenue were the staff are actually happy to see you, have a smile on their face, and are helpful. Now of course I don't know how they deliver the mail from these post offices but at least they have smiles and maybe there are Newman clones at each of these Post Offices but I will settle for the smile instead of the snarls that one receives at the Old Chelsea Station. read more

I always use the self-service package machines. They are always working, there's at least 3 of them (I think), and the packaging and tape are always available for you to use and pack your packages. It's a small office, but they do have people walking around to help you. I even had a lady help mail my packages with me instead of using the machines because she said she was faster, and she was! Service itself is really nice! I hate that the hours are terrible and that it's real old and gunky inside, but this may all be out of their control. read more

The manager that works there on Thursdays Afternoons clearly did not have a drop of training. She is EXTREMELY RUDE and NASTY. I did not see a name tag but you will spot her by her curly brown messed up wig. I asked her for clarification nicely and she immediately raised her voice, caught an attitude, shook her hands disrespectfully at me, and yelled for me to leave. This post office has one of the worst per customer transaction times in the whole city. All of the workers are apathetic and seem to take pride in moving as slowly as possible. You will spend 30 to 40 minutes to perform the simplest transaction and expect to spend 2 to 3 hours for their passport services. Avoid at all costs. read more

I am so fed up with this post office. Not only are the employee rude, but every package in the last few months I had delivered to my P.O. Box is delayed or could not be found for one ridiculous reason or another. Packages that were scheduled to arrived in 3 days disappears for at least a week with the same notice robot message, "UPS SurePost tried to deliver your package No one could sign for it, so please look for a note from UPS SurePost or contact them for the next steps" How is this possible when all that needs to be done is an employee sign for it, log it in to the system and put it in the P.O. Box. On 2 separate occasions I had to contact the Post Master General about my missing packages. Of course, after my complaint was filed my packages would "miraculously" appear. read more

Super annoyed that I ordered cookies for an event meant to be sent by priority mail and arrive the next day for an event and that the company chose to ship my delivery by lame usps, which never delivers anything on time. Despite the fact the the tracking information stated my order would arrive today, and I received another package from usps from amazon schedule to arrive today, it is nowhere to be found. Right now (11:30pm) it says my package is still out for delivery - which is the status that was showing since 1pm today. Calling usps on the phone is a joke - you can't reach the actual office. I tried to get someone on the phone to find out where my package was and was given an estimated 50 minute wait time as well as informed by the vm that they had the same information that I was seeing on the tracking page. Called back in the evening and they were closed. Tell me why a package being shipped to brooklyn from manhattan has to journey all the way to new jersey first? This company is incredibly inefficient unless it has to do with their cash cow (amazon) and I wish all the vendors (including amazon) would just go with fed ex or usps instead so usps would be forced to get their crap together. read more

The Asian/Indian guy who works there is a *!**#!* asshole . The line was looped twice; 2 windows and the passport window was only open. The attitude there is to do as least amount of work as possible. The manual Parcel bins are always blocked. You have Es no point because it's probably faketo get in line to hand over pre-paid, pre- printed labels. The staff seem very secure with their jobs. Management needs to go in there and see the level of work/activity. Yet another rude, lazy service from this location. I was given a name for me to complain but it is probably fake.
