Stood in an empty post office for 15 minutes on a Thursday morning looking completely baffled at the fact that the lights were on, the door was open, but there was NO ONE BEHIND THE COUNTERS. For fifteen minutes. Should have just taken the holiday card standee and walked out, at least then I would have gotten something for my trouble of waking up at gddamn 7am because of their stupid hours Look at the picture. Lol.

Especially considering its proximity to the bus terminal that resembles the Mos Eisley cantina, the Times Square Station of the U.S. Postal Service is a refreshingly efficient and friendly outpost. Most of the time, there isn't much of a line. The employees have been cordial, helpful and professional, just like they aren't in so many other post offices throughout the city. (I'm looking at you, Brooklyn.) There are at least three working automated postal machines, as well, and within a block, you can catch a bus out of town, a donut at a national chain, coffee at a Canadian-owned franchise or a bite to eat after mailing your entry to the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. Good luck!

Reviews are spot on. Daughter who lives there in NY, can back up the discourteous post office personnel and their conduct.

I think it's time that S. Boskey retired. What an unpleasant and cranky man! Maybe find a job that's not customer service related.

Procrastination usually doesn't win out, but thank goodness for a USPS office open until 7pm on…read moreSundays, even during the holiday season! In fact, the only station in the city open on Sundays and a lifesaver for those who started writing holiday cards on the Friday before Christmas. Peering into the "envelopes" mail slot, thousands of pieces of mail were visibly overflowing the sacks, requiring some gingerly wedging of my small booklet-worth of correspondence in between others. Fingers crossed all made it out ok! Shoutout to one of two staff working the two open counters at 5pm on Sunday December 21, you were friendly, prompt and helpful and put your best foot forward for terrific customer service. Only 2 counters were open and the line was about a dozen people long, steadily moving. For service--a solid 5 stars. Facilities are as expected a bit on the older side, being built in 1912 as part of the original Penn Station complex, though the modern conveniences of tap-to-pay technology and self-service weigh/postage stations are available. Waiting in line, the details on the ceiling caught my attention. Maybe because the darker evening outside accentuated the brighter interior, the simultaneously ornamental, scrolling flourishes fitted in repeating geometric patterns stood out in ways I hadn't noticed before. Come to find after some googling the ceiling is decorated with the country seals of 11 countries including the US, the countries part of the universal postal union at the time of construction, an administrative body now under the purview of the United Nations that handles international shipping policies. Not very fun facts: designated a national historic landmark in 1973 and re-named after James Farley, 53rd U.S. Postmaster General in 1982. Previously generically named the General Post Office. Slightly more fun fact: atop the facade along 8th Avenue the inscription reads, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Some may confuse this to be the creed of the U.S. Postal Service, but it's actually not. Rather, it's tied to the tribute that building architect William Mitchell Kendall paid to major historical figures credited with postal advancements. This is an excerpt out of Herodotus's 'Histories', which described the messenger system established in Persia by Cyrus the Great.

As someone who has regularly used this post office for years given its easy availability, including with a P.O. Box there, it amazes me what has developed, especially since the building now also includes Penn Station's Moynihan Hall. Yes, they do have window service every day, but 98% of the time they're slow as molasses long lines because less than optimal staffing levels. Hey, USPS, this is the city that never sleeps, yet P.O. Boxes and self-serve Automatic Centers are now closed off to the public at night!!! Why? (Note - This is despite the faster than inflation, year-after-year increase in this location's P.O. Box rental rates.) Why is the only ADA access, as far as I could find it, on the almost the. complete opposite side of the building towards 9th Avenue inside Moynihan Hall?

Nevertheless, there are times where I need to visit one, and in those cases this is super convenient. For me, the biggest plus this post office has going for it is their operating hours. They're open from 7:30am to 7pm Monday to Saturday which is way longer than a typical branch. This makes it easy if you need to visit before or after work. This is also a huge location - tons of PO boxes and multiple self-serve kiosk stands in case you don't need to wait on the line for your service. Speaking of the line, it's there - as per usual. Despite having multiple tellers and a long queue area, I've only seen two to three people working them - even at peak times. As such, there's always a line - so just be prepared. Overall, this US Post Office is fine. I will use the self-serve kiosks as much as possible, and their expanded operating hours will make me a repeat patron.

A lot of the smaller locations only have a few customer service windows and limited self-service. Here there are over two dozen windows (though not all of them are staffed). As with many post offices the lines could prob move faster but overall it felt reasonable (a dozen odd people in line) on a Friday evening around 5pm. The overall space appeared to be generally clean and decently maintained. Nice touch to add some sculptures and artwork since mailboxes aren't very intriguing to look at. I think sometimes it's easy to judge post office clerks by their covers, they have to deal with such a wide variety of people so they've seen it all. No use being impatient as there's unfortunately not much motivation to speed things up (so many things are broken systematically in the USPS as an organization ...but that's another discussion) and it'll probably just rub on nerves for all parties. In the meantime better to just plan ahead and account for some extra time when getting in line at the post office. One of the nice things about this location is it's open late weekdays until 7pm, convenient when you don't have time before work or during the day to stop by a post office.
