I love the staff at the post office. They work hard, and are dealing with constant and sometimes unreasonable demands and bad attitudes. They do their best to set clear boundaries that customers do not bother to follow. If you are kind and respectful to them, they will be kind and respectful to you. I was surprised to see this USPS's rating since I had the nicest time here; the lady helping everyone out was so incredibly friendly!

By far, the WORST POST OFFICE. This place seems to have a policy of receiving an item and waiting NO LESS than one full day before "delivering" it to the PO Box. Doesn't matter what the tracking says, because they will simply say, "it's not ready for pick up yet." From there, the person who is receiving the package gets to walk back to house in the snow and wait...and wait until he/she gets a notification AT CLOSING TIME or even the following morning that the package has been delivered (if you're lucky)...again. Zero accountability there also. Don't waste your time trying to complain to the "manager" just shut up and take it. Save your money parents and do not send student "Priority Mail" because they just sit there. Use the cheaper parcel post and ship really early. read more

I don't drive in New Haven so I don't have to go to the DMV but the U.S. Government still finds a way to put me through ordeals that make me want to blow my brains out. The workers here all look like they're counting down the days until they can start collecting social security and then proceed to die a slow death from tuberculosis. Going to this post office is a truly painful experience, every time, without fail. I (very unfortunately) have a PO box here because it's the most convenient way for me to get mail and packages. The last 3 times I went to pick up my packages, during normal operating hours, the parcel pickup window was inexplicably closed. The post offce then had the audacity to email me telling me to pick up my packages as soon as possible because their storage was overflowing. Absurd. This post office is harmful to the patriotic spirit of this country. It makes me hate America. read more

Hiiii you blow. I spent $25 to have my roommate priority ship an important doc to Los Angeles, and when it came it was missing all but the first and last pages. Y'all are postal workers. Learn how to fucking use tape. Also, I never knew it could take longer to mail a package than it does to ride Space Mountain. HATE. read more

Post offices are notorious for their inefficiency, but this one outdoes them all. If you order anything and tracking says your package or mail is here, wait a minimum of 2 days to check your mailbox; otherwise you're wasting your time. The staff here is not just apathetic, but sometimes downright hostile. I've been told off for simply asking them where my package was. I often see people waiting in long lines while the staff chats away behind the counters. Who hired these people? Why can't the management train them properly, or hire better people, or upgrade the infrastructure? This place is an abomination and an embarrassment. read more

Jan 14 2020 -- Oh, man I read the reviews and was loathe to cross the threshold into "the post office from hell," which is basically what most of the reviews say, but it was the closest and I was in a hurry. Good news! It was great! And the sweet man behind the counter could not have been more funny and helpful. It was a weird thing I had about mailing an important letter that HAS to be there at a certain time, but the arrival deadline is Federal a holiday, so how to do I plan around that .... etc. blah... He answered all my questions, was understanding and really was so funny and sweet. It was a weekday morning and I was ready to give the guy a hug by the time I left. Don't despair there is at least one sweetheart of a postal worker in this place. read more

I don't understand why the post office and DMV are so unpleasant to go to. But unfortunately this place follows the mold. All the employees I dealt with are curt and slow. They had a line of people and one of the counters was "closed" but there was an employee standing there just alternating between staring at everyone and sorting through mail. The staff here is very rude. I have had a PO Box at this location for almost two years now and 9 times out of 10, the employees will be rude. I actually got yelled at today because I rang the bell at the parcel pickup window, which you're supposed to do to get one of the employee's attention. He proceeded to make me read the sign that was displayed at the window out loud to him, which said "if a worker is not present, ring the bell once." I rang the bell because he was clearly working on something else and wanted to make sure he knew I was there. I was basically treated like a child despite being an adult. There's also another woman there who is very cold and looks bothered any time I go in. I would suggest teaching the staff here about customer service. read more

Worst customer service ever. All of the people working there are incredibly rude and condescending. Me buying stamps turned out to be an argument with the self-righteous woman who was trying to tell me to fold my heavy paper already perforated voting ballot into a narrow envelope. This would have forced it into a very strange shape and a waste of paper, since the ballot is already a thick envelope. Then she said started arguing that I needed a more expensive stamp since the one page ballot might be heavy. She was angry with me for not wanting the larger one; after all I am the one who actually knew how the one page sheet felt. It did not warrant a heavy duty stamp. This got her irate. These people need manners. I won't even begin the incident the guy next to me had to endure when he just wanted to borrow tape for his package... US Post Office, if you don't even try to compete with customer service, it's not surprise why you're doing so well. We'd get better customer service from stamp-selling vending machines. read more

I'm done with this post office location. My first few experiences were non-existent because they closed earlier than posted. Since then, I have never left in less than 25 minutes no matter whether there were 2 or 12 people ahead of me. The staff is unnecessarily slow and the vending area is often disorganized and out of stock. I usually have my packages entirely ready to go before I get there and just need postage for them. I always try to come in with a positive attitude because I know that they deal with a lot of preventable issues from all of the students. But today I was treated extremely rudely by my teller for asking a question. I refused my business at that time and walked away. I have used the post office location across from IKEA several times and I am always happy with the service, organization, and the quality of the staff. I will know use them for all of my needs even when it is less than convenient to get there. read more

This post office would benefit tremendously if it had a 24 hour self service kiosk installed. Too often I find myself in long lines for simple postal tasks like mailing a 9x12 envelope first class to Canada. The staff can be helpful and friendly, but too often are taxed by the long lines and Kafkaesque regulations surrounding the execution of their jobs, combined with the frustration and confusion of patrons. Given the traffic in this station, and the large undergraduate demographic that frequents it, I am very surprised that more self service options aren't available. This Post Office seems to invite agitation and complaints. read more

I beg to differ. I've always had excellent service at the counter. I've used all kinds of services - domestic, international, express, etc - and my packages arrive exactly when the Postal Service says they will in fine condition. Sometimes the lines are long, sometimes they are not. But you know what really slows up the process, and often makes mailing a package here unpleasant? Customers who don't know how to prepare their own packages for mailing or how to behave appropriately in public. Grow up, stand in line, get a clue. While you're standing there, whiling away the precious minutes, take note of the patient, responsible behavior of those around you. Emulate. I do wish this post office branch were open later, or had a working do-it-yourself machine. Sometimes I find myself in the FedEx office, or the Brewery St post office and I think that's a shame. read more

I agree - you do blow post office. I used to work on the Green and rather than walk to the Yale Station to mail packages I chose to ride the shuttle all the way down Orange street to Hall Benedict (which isn't great either) to ship things. It took about the same amount of time, but at least I got to sit down and look out the windows. read more

Worst place on earth. Always guaranteed to ruin your day. Believe all the other reviews: lost packages, slow service, rude staff, and incompetent and lazy workers are just a few of the problems here. I've had several important packages completely disappear, with the staff telling me on several of these occasions to "just order another one". The staff also has a disturbingly hostile attitude before you even come up to ask them for service (i.e., ask them to do their job). Just last week I asked one employee to give me her name after being extremely rude to me and one other customer; she smugly refused and told me to "f**k off". I guess they don't understand that they are government employees whose salaries are paid for by the public. It really is a huge shame, but I will be using the Yale package center from now on (and you should too). read more

Oh my god this post office is awful. I went here to mail a package and buy a stamp. Neither task was accomplished. The line was super long to do anything at the counter, and apparently this post office didn't get the memo that every other post office in the states has an automated machine to buy stamps. At least I couldn't find one, and I looked all over. There was no drop box for packages, so I ended up having to use a mailbox out front. How ridiculous. read more

No information anywhere?! Just walk in. See tiny writing you can barely read above the service desk. A line of people. That's it. Went here to get passport photos and papers posted. Waited in line for 50 minutes (5 people in front of me). When I finally reached the counter, staff told me the 'passport guy' isn't in today, come back tomorrow. I asked is there any way someone else could do it?. He replied (*looking like I just killed his family*) " HE took the CAMERA, SO... its BEST to come back tomorrow.. *fake smile'.. Thankyou" ...... After waiting 50 minutes, are you serious? Why wouldn't all staff learn how to take passport photos?! It's not that hard. And who manages this place to allow 'the passport guy' to take the camera home?. This place needs clear large signs, trained staff, better management and friendly service. Have someone waiting at the line asking people what they'd like to do so the line moves faster. This place was stinking hot too, but not UPS (they have air conditioning) which brings me to the alternative. If can post by express/courier, go to UPS up the road (past Apple). They were a little pricey ($23 for 2 day delivery of paperwork) but the service was fast, staff are friendly, no line, place was air conditioned, did my passport photo twice till it was perfect (as first time was taken blurry and he apologised for it which is unheard of in the past). Also, they were very patient (I'm international) explaining the process. They were very helpful to a lady beside me who wanted things packaged, going out to her car and helping her with packing items. Please, go to UPS instead and avoid this place at all cost. read more

No self-serve vending machines!!! Even though there is a sign that says so. Staff are nice enough but there is one guy (on Saturday) who seems to get particularly nasty when students have to send things back home (overseas, etc) A real jerk. I'm not a student I just like using this place because there usually isn't a line. Don't go at the end of a school year or semester. Thing do get a little hectic, especially on Saturdays. read more

I've used mail forwarding twice, and not received the bulk of my mail each time. Try calling them: they just let it ring, and finally pick up, and hang up immediately. No joke! I've tried on 3 separate days. Letting the phone ring for 5 minutes or more each time, before finally someone picks up and slams the phone down. read more

Of all the post offices I have been to in new haven county, the staff here are the most unprofessional. I understand they are probably overworked and underpaid. But the old man is extremely rude every time I go there. I see him speaking impolitely to other customers as well. I dread going to this post office. I went on Wednesday or Thursday of this week and I was relived that he was not there at the counter. The women who work there have always been professional and helpful. The people at the counter are ok, but parcel pickup is a nightmare! A lot of the times there's nobody at the window, and when I go to the other window to ask if there is anyone available to help, they rudely tell me to go back to the other window. When there is someone at the window, there's a huge line of students waiting for their packages that often take days to get sorted. Would give this place negative stars if I could. They're slow, which is bad enough on its own, but the employees have very little patience & blame you for mistakes THEY made. Very unhelpful when you ask for help--few care about getting the job done. Whoever is in charge of hiring people for this post office should be fired, and then arrested for theft of taxpayer dollars. Not one person working here makes any effort to do their job, service customers, or even pretend to care, and they all move extremely slow as if it's a prank video show with hidden cameras. I used to think one was mentally handicapped (so I gave him a pass) because he couldn't look up or talk or barely acknowledge customers, but then one day I came in and he was as if he had his own talk show, yapping it up with interest and charisma while talking to a customer about local bars and pubs. This conversation went on for a FULL 5 minutes after the customer's transaction was completed, all while at least 4 people in line with no other open windows where FUMING that they were being ignored while this guy yapped on and on. Once he finished and the customer left, he went back into zombie-mode. NOT ONE person working here is qualified to be working here, NOT ONE. Someone should be investigated for this. **It's worth noting that each of these people working here get better health coverage than most of us, and will get a wonderful retirement package, all paid for by you the taxpayer. There should be some obligation to serve the customer that goes along with these benefits. read more

I've been to postal offices all around the country. And though USPS is known for customer service that is less than those offered by private companies, this one is almost always a horrible experience most times I go. Usually it's a patronizing older black lady, with really short butch hair cut, who is really rude and tries to come up with ways to charge you more. One time I told her I didn't want any other service, and she added mail confirmation. When I got my receipt, nicely asked her to remove it because I didn't ask for it, she yelled at me about how I didn't make it very clear to her. So I let that go, thinking maybe it was my fault. After I told my co-workers about this, they said she has also done similar things to them in the past. The next time I went, I made sure to tell her that I didn't need any of the other additional services. But she got mad at me and told me that I didn't need to repeat myself, she had heard me. I didn't say anything back to her, but she thought she could bully me. So she started going on and on about how she could hear very well and how I needed to speak up louder. It was just a horrible experience. I really hope that some supervisor in charge of this office can change the culture or at the very least, get rid of some of the people who work here, because this is honestly one of the worst USPS offices I have ever been to. I hate to say this about the government, but I did not pay my taxes to be treated like shit by some self-entitled federal employee abusing their power. read more

It's as though the staff were permanently encased in a protective molasses coating, or perhaps were competing to win a world-class three-toed-sloth emulation contest. The best is when there is a line of 15+ people, and one of them, with all the deliberate assurance of Stalin signing an execution order, reaches around to place the "next window please" sign in front of him/her, before taking a statutory break with exquisitely inconvenient timing. It's not as though this one is any worse than 90 percent of the other USPS outlets, though. That's what a guaranteed monopoly will get you. I sometimes wonder, though, do the employees have any shame? Is it embarrassing to tell your friends that you work for such a customer-unfriendly organization? Such are the idle speculations to which a cumulative month-plus of line-waiting enables the mind to give rise. read more

Just a terrible place. The lethargic staff will do anything but be helpful. It is quite common to hear them chatting as if on break while "searching" for a package, without a care that the line is creeping around the corner. I don't think I have ever left feeling as if I had a satisfactory experience, whether it be sending or receiving mail. Do all you can to avoid this post office. read more

I don't think these reviews actually get read by usps, but I need to blow some steam. Worst service ever! I'm ok with brief, unfriendly service, I just want to ship my package quickly and be done with it. But nooo, the employee has to waste my time by talking about me to another employee right in front of my face. Since I work walking distance away, I always head here when I need to ship something quickly or get stamps. Every time I have been in here they were polite and friendly (usps shocker?) and never had an issue. I am reading all these reviews and damn this place has a bad rep. (if you can. if you're a yale student-get all your stuff shipped ups or fed-exed to hendrie/your master's office/your department office instead) i had a PO box there for my 4 years at yale and letters consistently took WEEKS and WEEKS to get to me. i got a birthday card from my parents two months after my birthday even though they sent it the week of. i get my newsweeks a week late, and most of the time the covers are torn. as for the staff - as another reviewer wrote, they are slow as molasses, yes, but if you learn to accept that as reality and treat treat them nicely, they're usually nice back to you. they're people too! read more

I thought the reviews were a little over exaggerated, but after visiting the USPS in Yale New Haven, I completely understand why they are going out of business. Firstly if you are of faint heart, I would suggest not to read what I'm about to say. For the 10minutes I spent in USPS today were the most horrifying experience I have ever encountered with any company. I run a business on eBay/Amazon with orders coming in and out. I ship approx 20-50 packages on a daily basis. This is a sole proprietorship business that I run on my own, packing, labeling, and delivering. I've yet to setup for USPS pickups so I continue shipping by hand. I usually go to my USPS in FairHaven (best USPS ever), but today I was downtown and decided to go ahead and drop my package off and be on my way. Upon entering the store, I was surprised that there was not a line as usual. So I walked across to give the obese Caucasian man my pre-paid packages so I could be on my way out. He looked at me saying that he can't take it because his "computer wasn't on". But he didn't need to scan it for I did not want proof of dropping it off at the store, I just wanted him to add it to the "out" bin (like my FairHaven USPS does). I ask for the drop box (blue box) where I can just drop them off, he mumbles to himself and then tells me to just wait in line...I turn and see that a line appeared out of nowhere. Aggravated as it is, I decided to cool down and wait in the line. My turn comes and the African American woman calls for me, I hand her my pre-paid packages. She observes it and asks me "what is in it". NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS IS WHAT'S IN IT!!! But I didn't say that, I told her simply it was my shipment for my business. Then she goes on to start an argument claiming that my packaging wasn't sufficient for shipping such a product since it would "get squished" in the process of shipping. I told her repeatedly that it was a package, not a letter (first class large envelope). She still goes on to talk about how I should ship it in one of her envelops. Now mind you I have shipped over 500 of these same exact products in the same exact packaging before at my USPS in FairHaven where they have sense. After the argument is done, she then asks me to put them on the scale one at a time...I didn't notice but she was actually trying to give me a receipt, but I didn't ask for that, I just wanted to drop it off. Seeing the hectic place as it was (One of the "out" bins being on the outer side of the counter) I went ahead and kept on so I can have proof that I did indeed drop these off. Before someone comes around and steals the package on the "Outbox" that was outside the counter after she leaves them there unattended. People behind are just staring, no Idea how I should react to anything anymore. This woman does not understand common sense. I'm just happy I invested in a label printer so I won't have to deal with this. For I don't know what would've happened if I tried paying at the counter. For this woman really thought she was the queen of USPS and I was in her kingdom. read more

Earlier today I found myself unconsciously calculating how best to mail my very important document without having to set foot in this post office. Walk an extra mile to over Brewery Street? Just put a bunch of stamps on it and hope it gets there? I finally caved. With two people in front of me in line it took 15 min to get served. The person working there did that thing another reviewer mentioned of loudly berating a customer and then, in his hearing, laughing about how "entertaining" such an incident must be to watch. ? When I had a PO box here and had to pick up parcels, the parcel man could be counted upon to ruin my day, every time. On the bright side, I'm always happily shocked now when I go to other post offices and...they're not the twilight zone! Re mailing needs in New Haven, the Brewery Street PO and the UPS store up Dwight have nice people...go there for things if at all possible. read more
