My shipping cost estimates (by weight and dimensions, according to ebay) were WAY off and I was a bit overwhelmed realizing I might lose money on 3 items. Thankfully, VALERIE swooped in like a sweet, calming angel from heaven and patiently helped me through the process of finding the cheapest shipping options and packaging available. A few years ago they threatened to close this small post office and there was such an outcry against that proposal, that the closure did not happen. The United States postal service is part of America's promise to its citizens. It is a social service that our tax dollars pay for and as such it should not be subject to Capitalist schemes wherein they are responsible for delivering FedEx or UPS packages for less money than we as direct customers pay. I will drive past the brookfield post office to head to the one in Lagrange park just be greeted kindly when shipping an item. They ask how my wife and kids are doing and it breaks my heart to know they are underpaid and unappreciated doing the job that helped make America a better place to live. While waiting, the postmaster (or…read morea company employee who seemed to be in charge) loudly called for additional help up front because some staff who should have been there weren't present, trying to get the line moving faster. Eventually, Cindy assisted us. She was a bit curt at first, but things became less awkward once the fingerprinting process began. The fingerprint service costs $50, but you must register beforehand and bring a barcode and confirmation number to be serviced. I also learned they offer passport and other identity services, which is convenient. Just keep in mind they close at 3p on Saturdays, which is earlier than many other locations. Overall, it was an okay experience, but coming prepared with your registration details helps expedite the process.

I sell books, live in Riverside, work in Lagrange. Because of what I do for work, I frequent several post offices, including, Riverside, Berwyn, Lyons, and never again, Lagrange. A couple of months ago, I stopped there to quickly mail a book. I explained kindly that my printer was wonky and the employee (the dreaded Leba) might have to manually type in the label number. She looked offended by this and quickly replied that she could not do that. It was not her job to type in the number, only scan it. I told her the only way this would ship if she could please type it in. Her response became, "I'm not allowed to do that." Finally, in a moment of desperation I told her that the employees of all the other post offices I frequent type it in. She maintained she was not allowed to do so. I went to a different post office where, not only did the employee happily type in the number, she told me that the employee in Lagrange absolutely should have done this. She said it was in fact, her very job. This employee then told me she had to go to the Lagrange Post Office on occasion because she lives there and sometimes she has to retrieve a package, has worn her uniform, popping in after work, and has experienced not only unacceptable rudeness but also racism. Lagrange Post Office has been such a repeated horrific experience for her that she has addressed it to the Postmaster himself. The POSTMASTER himself! Today I was on my lunch break and ran in. I was set. The address label is on my phone; only a scan is needed! I was confident. After waiting in a short line for a long time, it was my turn. Leba immediately looked at my shipping box (an Amazon box) and told me to step out of line and sharpie out any areas of the box that had a code on it. What? I almost exclusively use Amazon boxes to ship the books I sell and have never been asked to do this by any other employee. Please remember, I'm at different post offices weekly, as recently as yesterday, shipping in a used Amazon box. I stepped out of line and sharpied over everything she found offensive on the box as she loudly and rudely repeated to "Look at the door. It's a rule!" The gentleman behind politely let me step back into line and I handed her the box. As I left, she was still yelling at me to look at the door. I have worked in various forms of customer service for years. I'm extremely polite to everyone behind a counter. If you are hoping for a positive post office experience, avoid Lagrange at all costs. They clearly get all their employees from the Island of Misfit Postal Employees.

The night before I made copies of our ID's and Drivers License and the next day my husband realized he had not put his ID back in his wallet. Marieta was beyond patient as my husband went back home to retrieve his ID. Getting a passport is exhausting and you have to make sure you have every document you need in place. I have gotten passports at other USPS offices and they are not as helpful. This USPS office was very quiet and not busy at all. The retail counter clerk at the Maywood, IL USPS was not very helpful or customer service oriented. The clerk replied that I needed the original paper receipt for the purchase of the money order to get a refund. I expressed that I had never been requested to provide the receipt before to get a refund for an USPS money order before that I had purchased and was in possession of. Like a parrot, the clerk just repeated the same answer. At this point, I just left as it was fruitless. I did not have the patience to go the route of asking to speaking to her manager, even though, I knew what the clerk had told me was "garbage". Needless to say, I was able to complete the refund of the money order at a USPS in Wheaton, IL without any trouble and a smile. The Wheaton USPS simply asked for my identification and validated the money order through their computers. It sad that USPS has deteriorated to a point of where there is no uniformity and lack of consistency across locations. It is apparent that you have to go to certain USPS locations to receive quality service and a positive outcome.

Another thing I noticed on my drop off package receipt, is that they provide a discount code for some of their services. Their prices are already reasonable, so this is a nice little bonus. Another bonus is that Petra falafel recently opened. I grabbed one of their take-out menu so that I can easily order from them in the future.
