Today I found out I can skip the line and just use the self kiosk, just the option to print from QR code was tucked away under 'label broker'. This self-kiosk seems to have more functionality now (can order stamps too), which is great to see. Wish there were more of them. Entering through the only operating door (for at least the last week), I dropped the entire batch inside. This would be a classic example of Zohran Mandami's definition of bureaucratic complacency on the part of the post office. The Merrifield Post Office is beyond disreputable and dysfunctional. Parking was challenging and treacherous--every spot was full despite it being a weekday morning, and people were pulling out from in front of the store right into the lane for drive-thru letter drop off. There was a line of almost 10 customers waiting, with only two busy employees doing their best to handle the queue. I left my boxes in a pile on the front counter with other prepaid mail. I replied "debit" and she said, "The system is broken, we are taking only cash or checks. Come back with cash." No apology. NOW a sensible manager would ideally post signs on the outer doors advising customers of the issue but NO signs there. NO signs on the counter, NO signs anywhere. The clerk did tell me that they made an "announcement" from time to time for the benefit of customers who are been waiting in line forever. The clerk did turn to the manager who was lounging on the back wall and asked that he post a sign. He smirked and shifted his lounging position. (This is the same useless manager that is always hanging out doing absolutely nothing.) ALL of the holiday packaging was sold out. There was one lone box that had been broken and left in the display. Heaven forbid the manager should restock! He has a nap to take! So I dropped the forty dollars in greeting cards I was going to purchase back in the rack and walked out without them or the four sheets of stamps I had come to buy. I left through the same front door that has been broken and standing open 24 hours a day 7 days a week for at least a year. This post office is a disgrace! ALSO -- the photos of a gleaming facility had to have been taken by an employee after a thorough cleaning which this post office has not seen in MONTHS. It was pretty chaotic with customers being ill-prepared and needing a lot of hand-holding (the late one had neither her passport application or a pen and was 30 minutes late when she arrived). Nonetheless, the clerk had a good sense of humor, was professional, empathetic, and honest. She answered one of my passport questions about their passport services and went out of her way to find a form for me, even though I told her I could come back when I was closer to renewing since she was so busy. I was impressed with how well informed she was about passport services that didn't apply to the USPS location and how respectful and calm she was under pressure. I was able to get everything done (lots of stamps and a mailing) with just a brief wait, and the clerk kept everyone content when it got even busier than when I first walked in. Good service should be appreciated, so I decided to leave positive feedback and express my gratitude for a job well done.
