There is only one nice woman that works here, there was a nice guy but he left for another post office, lucky him! OK. Whoever took over management of this post office did a pretty good job since my last review. Don't get me wrong, it's still the post office. Temper your expectations accordingly. However, after having the local distribution center hang onto a package for more than 2 weeks with no update, Miss Castro at the Ravenswood Station office has been super helpful and great. She follows up with me when she says she will, she's working on getting me answers, and she's really friendly and understanding. The employees they've hired lately are much friendlier and the entire office has a much better feel. It's still slow... but, it's the post office. So, what can you do? All in all, it seems like things are headed in the right direction. read more

When others here say this is the post office from hell they are not lying. I moved to Chicago 2 years ago and before that I used to complain about a 10 minute wait. Not anymore. Thank God for the Automated Postal Machine. Unfortunately I can't use that to send international packages, which I do quite frequently for my business. So if I can swing it, I go to the Graceland Station. That location has been my saving grace. But the bad part is I have to travel all the way down Ashland which is a huge traffic trap in the afternoon. Just a quick anecdote to convey Ravenswood's incompetence. Most reviewers here complain about the clerks but here's two more things they just do to screw over the customer. Their posted time for passport service was incorrect for months. Every day that I would be in there in the morning several families would come in and the clerk would tell them they couldn't get it done at that time. You would think ONE, JUST ONE, employee at that location would have the common sense and courtesy for the customers to go and change the sign to the correct hours. Second thing, for at least one week the debit card payment option was not available. After the first day common sense would tell you put up a sign saying we're sorry but debit cards cannot be processed at this time. They never did. Stay away. Go to the Graceland station. It's a bitch to travel to if you're in Ravenswood but the location once you are there is convenient. There's a Jewel, Office Depot, & Dunkin Donuts all in the area. read more

I thick cloud of depression and dread comes over me when I know I have to step foot in this place...NO JOKE! These "workers" are THE RUDEST humans walking the streets of Chicago. I just don't know how they get away with the things they say. They hate their lives and take it out on the customers. There was a old European lady in line in front of me who was not the best English speaker. The "worker" literally said "Do you not hear me, are you stupid?!?!" within the first 2 minutes of this poor old lady getting at the counter. It took everything inside me to not drop down to her level and curse her life out. Another user who *wishes* that a zero-star option existed. Or maybe negative stars. I've actually gone through the trouble to register an account here at yelp *specifically* to make sure that my experience is chronicled here, too, because someone, somewhere, eventually *must* take notice of this... Our visits to this post office have been so overwhelmingly negative that in general we leave our neighborhood and use post offices in other parts of the city. When we find ourselves caught in a situation where we *must* go to this post office, generally because they've got one of our packages, my wife refuses to go and sends me. I go hoping that I'll be treated with apathy as that seems to be the best-case scenario. It's sure better than the other options at this post office - disdain, antipathy, animosity, or even hostility. We've experienced all of the above at this post office, to the point that we've literally complained to the Postmaster General of the United States. Doing so resulted in an apologetic phone call, which was nice, but no visible changes either in terms of staff or policy or overall environment. Subsequent visits have been equally unpleasant. We'll be complaining to the Postmaster General again, and probably to the local postal authorities, if we can find any that we think care about the miserable state of this particular office. There are so many awful experiences that I could share, but I think I'll focus on some highlights: 1) A loud, vociferous argument between post office tellers about whether or not a bathroom break could be taken (including a very vocal threat of public urination). 2) A woman with a strong Eastern European accent exclaiming "The postal service was better in Russia!" before storming out. 3) A visit to pick up a package that resulted in *two* packages being fetched from the back - one package that belonged with the slip presented and another, previously unknown, package that had been in the back FOR ELEVEN MONTHS. 4) A teller refusing to serve a customer and throwing their mail to the next teller. 5) Tellers berating customers for not having information to which they may not have had previous access. 6) Making multiple trips to pick up certified mail because the slip left in the mailbox was incomplete and didn't specify *whose* certified mail needed to be picked up. (The extra bonus on this one: after presenting the slip which hadn't been properly completed by a postal service employee, the customer was berated for not properly filling out the rest of the slip. Irony!) I could go on, but surely I needn't. Anyone reading this can see the rest of the reviews and judge for themselves. For my part I've never seen customers asking "stupid questions", nor can I think of another service establishment which expects me to conduct internet research to make sure all my questions are answered before asking to be served. That's a completely absurd notion. I've also never seen any customers having "fits" because they've been charged for supplies. Hey, maybe that happens - I could believe that. I can also believe that some customers are rude. Hey, that happens. But under no circumstances does that justify treating *all* customers poorly. I've never been rude, I've tried my best to be adequately prepared when going in, I've done my best to read and follow instructions, and I'm regularly treated in such a way that if I could avoid ever setting foot in that building again, I would absolutely do so. But don't take my word for it. Read the rest of the reviews here and judge for yourself. Or, if you're brave enough, visit this post office a few times. If you visit three times and don't witness behavior from the employees that shocks or disgusts or offends or disappoints you, then I submit that you're not paying close enough attention to the way that customers are being treated. I have to give the people at the Ravenswood Post Office some credit. Yeah, I had to wait in line a long time to get my business tended to at first, but the staff there could not have been more helpful or friendly. I had a bunch of boxes being shipped from overseas to a friend's apartment since I didn't have an address here in Chicago at the time of sending. This created a huge bureaucratic mess thanks to the USPS, not the people at Ravenswood. The Customer Care Representative remembered me from when I had come in the first time to pick up a shipment, and phoned my friend directly when the next batch came to avoid the delivery to his place, bringing back to the post-office, and waiting for the paperwork to go through saying that I could pick it up myself. I was able to be directly connected to her when I called, and she remembered my situation. I would have been devastated had my all my stuff been lost or sent back overseas, but they had the situation under control. The boxes were thrown around quite a bit en route, but not by the folks at the Ravenswood Post Office. read more

A preface: I am a patient person who does not typically let the little things get to her. I don't mind waiting in line, dealing with people who hate their jobs, waiting an extra day to get a letter in the mail. It ain't no thang. I am also DEFINITELY not one to bitch about the USPS in general, as my mother has devoted well over 20 years of her life to amazing service at another branch- one far, far from 60625. However. My experiences of dealing with this branch for the past 3 months (prior to this was Wicker Park, Uptown and Hyde Park) have tipped me over the edge. First, I'd like to point out for 60625 newbies that if you find a little orange "sorry we missed you"-type slip in lieu of a package you were expecting, DO NOT go with the option of filling out and signing the back so that your carrier can re-deliver and leave it at your building. The carrier will continue delivering your mail (although this is a weak assumption, given what I've read from other reviewers), but will not pick up the form. Take it to the P.O., bring a book and a folding chair, and get it yourself. Then bitch about the experience on Yelp! It's a great stress reliever. :) The following rant is from my blog, which I used as a medium for letting everyone know that all items intended to reach my apartment, be they credit card offers or love letters, should instead be sent via carrier pigeon or inside a large helium balloon. "I have not been receiving things in the mail. First it was a package (book), then a second package (also a book). Then it was a third package (from mom, with presents 'n stuff inside), which was declared "missing" and subsequently delivered- albeit muy tarde, and in suspiciously sheepish fashion. AND THEN. Last night I received a letter -a card- from my mother. It looked like an ordinary greeting card on the outside, but weirdly beaten up. I noticed that one side had been entirely slit open, as with an actual letter-opener, designed to do things like... well, like opening letters intended for innocent peeps like myself. Inside was a greeting card, torn down the center and thus split into two halves. At right about this point I started looking around for that little girl from "The Ring" to appear or something. So, I called my mother: "Um, did you send me a card...?" Reply: "Oh, did you get the chocolate and the money?" ... Semi-long story made semi-short, some fuckhead of a postal employee made a deliberate move to steal my shiz. Now, I won't go on about how the postal service is fucked (especially Chicago's- anyone catch Jonathan Franzen's collection, "How to be Alone"? Outrageously amazing. Had an essay in there about Chicago's P.O. being corrupt as funk), as my poor, diligent mother has toiled away for the system for 95% of my life. But I will say this: I really could have used those chocolate bars. :( " ...My mother called the Ravenswood office, and I stopped by in person. Both of us were told that "you shouldn't send cash through the mail." Well, duh. However, we had assumed that this rule of thumb was in place for reasons other than avoiding deliberate theft by a USPS employee. Please note that I am not necessarily blaming this office, or blaming any one individual (a temp was on our route on the day it was delivered, BTW). But! I should think that if something arrived at this station in such an obviously tampered-with condition, the clerks there would and should have stamped it so that I "knew" it arrived at their station in said shape. This is also unfortunate because I like to leave a little thank-you gift for my mail carrier during the holiday season, and obviously I won't be doing that this year. So. A few bottom lines: Do not send cash. Probably do not send checks, either. Or Monopoly money... cuz you never know. Continuous issues with this post office and their mail carrier! First when I first moved, I had to do a change of address CORRECTION since even though I did it online, they STILL got the apt# wrong. So I come to find out, since I didnt really leave the house this summer, that the mail carrier scratched MY name off the mailbox. When a package came for one of my roommates I asked him where my mail was. He said "Oh you still live here?" I explained that I did a correction so that my mail got to the right apartment and not my downstairs neighbors, he admitted he didnt notice that. SERIOUSLY?!?! I still havent seen my Starbucks free birthday drink coupon, from AUGUST, and my birthday card from my mother turned up in October. I did file a complaint online, and the guy in charge there did nothing at all but say "I dont think he took your mail, he's a very good carrier". What part of I did a change of address correction and your carrier scratched my name off of my mailbox are you not getting here? If I had moved I would have taken that down when I left. I just know to forward my mail starting the beginning of April to my mom's so I get everything ! NOW we come to this month, where FedEx gives them a package to deliver and when I track it, it shows as delivered, yesterday when no one was home to recieve it. According to the tracking info, it got here 5 minutes before I got home, and because I am smart I had checked the gate, and NOTHING was there! I swear my stuff better show up today or I am writing a strong letter to whoever is in charge of the Chicago post offices, this crap is completely unexceptionable! This is just another reason why I can't wait to move out of state in May! I may be Chicago born and raised but stuff like this that continuously happens makes the natives not only restless but pissed off and annoyed enough to leave. If you are planning to move up this way any time soon, I would make sure you have checked which post office is going to be responsible for delivering your mail, this one just sucks! They not only need new carriers but someone else to be in charge, who stays on them and finds your missing mail instead of acting like it doesnt matter. If I could give this post office a negative score I would. I waited in line for 30 minutes, to find out I could not ship this large box because it had the word "wine" on it. There was not wine in it at all. I still couldn't send it. So I waited for absolutely nothing and when I asked where I could drop the 5 other letters I needed to send, the woman replied very rudely, "the mail box." I asked where that was and she said "oh you can actually give them to me." I'm furious that rude people can get away with working for the post office. Terrible terrible service! So it occurred to me today to vent about this PO...should have figured others would have gotten there before me. Yeesh. I was there on 4/5/08 and it is still horrendous, regardless of a previous congressional intervention. Management needs to recognize that the demands of handling so many passport applications and international shipments requires additional staff, particularly on Saturdays; as discourteous as some of the staff are, logistics and better management could solve most of the problems. In a year the carrier has yet to actually attempt delivery of any packages. They always leave a slip saying they attempted to. However, not once had anyone ring the doorbell or knocked on the door. On one occasion I was actually sitting on my front porch waiting for my package when I got the notification they had attempted to deliver it. No carrier in sight and THE NEXT DAY they left the slip saying they attempted to deliver it. I have said something in numerous occasions to supervisors. The last time I did so in October, they said they'd speak to the carrier. The reason I'm l'm sure that they did is because immediately after I didn't receive any mail at all for a month. Perhaps I actually have to move to get my mail because this post office has done nothing in a year to resolve the repeated issue. read more

I haven't been scolded in public since I was a child. When I asked one woman for help with sending out a package, she lazily pointed to some boxes and told me to put them in there. Now overheated in this oven of a facility, I went over and felt stupid and tried to figure it out on my own. I asked to borrow a pen (seriously, bring your own) and the Filipina woman leant me one then YELLED at me 30 seconds later from across the room for me to give it back. I hadn't even had a chance to use it yet. Finally I bring my boxes up, and a new woman had taken on a register and BLESS HER HEART I wish I had gotten her name. She was younger and much, much nicer and explained to me I was wasting money using the flat rate boxes that the other woman had pointed me to, and helped me repackage everything. This was over an hour of me stressing and sweating and living my worst social anxiety nightmare. I LOVE YOU YOUNGER WOMAN I DIDN'T GET THE NAME OF. I think I told her that. Other than her, everyone was BEYOND rude and treated me like I was their unwanted granddaughter that wasn't good at any of the activities they forced upon me. read more

Every time I have gone in there, they are out of stock on all priority mailing products, and the ATM machine is out of order more often than not. There is always a long, slow-moving line, so when the ATM is out I just walk out (which is 75% of the time). **3 days later, ATM still out of order. I don't normally review government agencies, or places that you can't control going to, but I made an exception in this case. First, THE STAFF WAS NICE. We were laughing and chit-chatting during our transaction. Secondly, STAFF WAS HELPFUL. Everybody there were getting passports, so it took extra time to handle customers. If a photocopy was missing, the staff told the people where to go (just across the street) to get the copies. They also didn't send you to a second line to then mail your passport (take note, Northtown Post Office). Mind you, this was all on a Saturday at 1:00. I will happily return to this post office, though quite far out of my way, for the excellent customer service so rarely found in a post office. read more

I understand usps workers are understaffed and most likely overworked and this pandemic has been tough on a lot of people, I get it. But Ms. Shirlee did not have to yell at me when I was adjusting my boxes to wait for her to call me up to the counter. I even looked at her to wait for her call but because I pushed up my boxes a few centimeters she yells at me in front of a line of people and says I'm the reason the pandemic is going on. I could have understood if I went up to the counter right away but this wasn't the case. I have been nothing but nice to the USPS people whenever I come in and I always offer water or a snack when I see my mailman/lady so this completely pissed me off because it was uncalled for. I have been coming to this post office for years, and have always considered it one of the best. This opinion has changed dramatically in the past few months. I have often arrived here and waited for nearly an hour to mail packages. You can hear multiple employees talking in the back room, but there is only one person up front assisting customers. 1. The automated postal machine in the outer lobby is where you should go for anything you possibly can. It's brilliant when it works. It is the only good thing about this office, and that is why it gets an additional star. 2. The tellers are mostly very poor with customers; some worse than others. I saw one CALL THE POLICE on some poor guy because he got mad at the teller for making him stand in line so he could ask a teller whether or not he should be standing in line (!) And the line is inevitably long, and slow. 3. The few times I have spoken to a manager (whom the tellers will make you show your ID to them before they'll even call a manager for you), the manager has been mostly very pleasant and helpful. But since they don't have any influence on the behavior of their tellers, I can't rate them highly either. read more

I'm giving 2 stars, because sometimes I have a good experience here. Mostly, it is a surreal nightmare. People are sent to the back of the line occasionally for seemingly arbitrary secret rule infractions. Workers will stare at you if you ask questions, or even ignore you. I do have to say that whenever I've been here I've had some great service once I made it to the front of the line. The biggest issue has to be the long wait. If I'm at the post office, it's to ship a package over 13 oz or internationally. Otherwise I try to do everything online. So why is the line so long? It's the stupid questions that customers ask the clerks when I'm there. It seems like the only people that come into the post office are people that are sending packages and those that have no understanding of how to use the internet to answer their questions and then get surly with the clerks for not getting instant answers worded in just the right way for them to understand. Hey we are all waiting, there is no need to be a complete jerk to the clerks or the people behind you in line. Get your act together. Have it all ready to be shipped before you get there. Also I'm annoyed with the people that have a fit for paying for postage supplies that are there to be sold along the wall. Hello! They charge so much for them because it's convenient. If I could give negative stars I would. Clearly I am not the only one who feels this way. Though the Ravenswood office is closer, I will gladly go a little farther to the Montrose office just to avoid witnessing yelling matches, waiting in line for 35 minutes, and being chagrined by postal workers. This is the best one out of Devon, Devon (Ridge) Montrose/Damen, Broadway/Lawrence. There were actually THREE!!! THREE!!!!! people at the counter and 2 of them does passports so efficiently and with a smile. I'm still raving about this place because I've never had a positive visit to any USPS. But this one actually has employees that was working and the line was just quickly moving along. I can't say enough about Ms. Shirley she was funny and very helpful. She actually got me out of there in a flash. My experience for once was pleasant after a not so pleasant one on Broadway and Lawrence. read more

I would rather pull out my own eyes than go here. I am so upset that I can walk here from my house. It is so close, but such a horrible place to visit. I run a small Etsy business, so places I can walk to, and send my merch out fast, should be nice. The workers there yell at each other. They are not professional at all. Here it is. We are located at 2501 W Lawrence ,just ACROSS from post office. It is hard to believe but every few months when we order stuff packages stay in post office not being delivered or package slip mailed to us EVER. When i went and complained they were telling me "maybe mailing system got confused and this was last point of delivery ,because we are so close" Why packing slip wasn't mailed to let us know that package was there? I like being contrary, but in this case it's fair. I read all these bad reviews and steeled myself to pickup a package. An older lady at the counter greeted me, was super sweet, and gave me my mail immediately before saying thank you. As a test, I made small talk with the other clerk and she laughed at my stupid joke. I only gave 4 stars because I figure this was a fluke. Right? Anyway, it was right before closing and no one was around. I figure that's when the lines are short and the tellers relax. The rudest, most unprofessional staff I have ever met. I am an even-keeled kind of person who rarely loses their temper. I have lost it on these folks! Mail carrier does not deliver the mail and my friends and family notify me with images of the returned mail. I have complained for over a year. Last week, they put me in contact with the carrier, who laughed and said the mailbox is full. It's not... hasn't been for months. I called the manager back, she was helpful and said to call back with any further problems, or even just to check in every few days to see how things are going. So, days later, more mail was returned and I did not receive. I called the office, and another manager answered. I updated her that I was told to call with any further problems, and she asked me: "How do you know they aren't addressing her, sir?" WHAT KIND OF A QUESTION IS THIS?! I was growing angrier and angrier and asked her for the name of the supervisor I spoke with earlier so I can just talk to her. She said "Sir, you should have written it down. You were so angry you forgot to write it down!" I asked her for her name, and she refused and hung up. I have filed an official complaint to the postmaster and am now on hold for over an hour. If we're sharing horror stories about the worst post office in the city, let me chime in: I live right around the block from this post office. It takes me 10 minutes to walk there, and yet I can't seem to get my mail with any regularity. I live in a house with 4 other people, at least one of us SHOULD be getting mail, and yet here I am, without my mail for the 5th day in a row. Once I ordered some records, I paid for the two day delivery: They came two months later. No one at the post office had any idea where they were. The people at this post office don't care. I know - a three start review for this post office is unheard of - I am just as shocked as you are....but I have really had a good experience with them over the past few days. After living at the same address for 2.5 years, my mail was suddenly being sent back to senders as undeliverable (yes my name was still on the box, yes other people were getting mail, and yes I had 4 separate people tell me that mail to me had been returned). oh and if I did get mail, it would only show up on the weekends. So I called the post office to see what the deal was - expecting the same customer service that I get when I go there in person. To my delight, Leah was very personable and helpful. She has been calling me to let me know if the status of my mail each day and has confirmed that I do indeed have a new carrier. I am hopeful that my mail delivery will return to normal - but if not, I know I can call Leah and she will help me out! read more

Worst post office ever. EVER. I don't think their staff has a GED's worth of intelligence amongst them. They have sent bus tickets back to the sender stating that I no longer lived at my home address where my name is clearly listed on my mail box. I guess I didn't need to go out of town that week, and never mind the money spent for those travel arrangements. They have bounced a package intended for me back and forth between three different post offices for a week once, before I finally had to schedule a pick up. Most recently, they made me wait in line for 20 minutes before telling me that they have essentially lost a package sent my way for Christmas. That wasn't an expensive, time sensitive, Christmas present-- couldn't be important at all! Let me clarify that I scheduled this thing for a pick up, and they sent it out for delivery any way. They accused me of scheduling my pick up incorrectly, and implied I was selfish and demanding. I think patiently waiting 20 minutes for information on package, is not selfish at all; it is more the case that these employees are rude, though I will admit that I was demanding by the end of the stint. This is just the short version of the b.s. that went down yesterday. The man waiting in line with me (they couldn't find his package either), told me that they have done this to him before and essentially accused him of lying to them. Why would any one lie about that? No one wants to be in this terrible post office, not even its worthless employees-- that much is clear. I hope the postal system becomes privatized so that it is easier to fire these worthless workers and replace them with people who actually care about their job and want to be there. Please remove the buzzer from the mail pickup door. It is the buzzer to nowhere, no one. Also, some additional staffing would be beneficial.
