I guess it's convenient because of the location but the customer service makes me feel like I'm waiting for the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. And who takes a 90 min. meal break, especially during the holiday season? ‍

I'm very happy about this change. I've also noticed that the lines in general are a lot shorter lately. There seems to have been a change for the better in the way things are done at 10034. My previous review is below: I gave it two stars because of the entertainment value of the complaints and banter in the incredibly long lines here, and because the staff, while painfully slow at their jobs, seem to be genuinely nice folk. It's a really frustrating experience. While standing in the lines here I sometimes fantasize about taking over as manager, somehow improving morale and maybe sending all the staff to a typing course so I don't have to enjoy the nail-biting suspense of watching clerks search all the keys before beginning their tentative two-finger data entry. (How can basic data entry on a keyboard that you use every day be so difficult?) I don't know what the qualifications are for working here are but it seems like data entry, a lively step, the ability to efficiently find labels, packages, forms etc etc. are not among them. I'm starting to wonder if this is where they put burnt out mail-carriers to work. It's possible and it would explain a lot. When I bring my postage-paid ready to ship packages here, all they have to do is scan the package with the laser, put it in the pile and give me a receipt. Instead everyone in line needs to wait while the clerk looks at the packages like he or she has never seen mail before. I decided to pay for a PO box here, because USPS 10040 down the road cannot be bothered to deliver or leave notices for my mail and I've lost packages because of it. At least with a PO Box I know I'll get a delivery or a slip, even though it requires about 40 minutes of my day be used up standing in line to get my packages. Seems like the only guaranteed way to get your mail in Inwood.

Compared to any other post office in NYC, this one is truly and consistently terrible. Because of…read morethat, you have to adjust your expectations. I've seen way too many entitled customers get pissed off and start to yell and scream at the staff, but that'll get you nowhere. I've been using this postal branch before and after it moved to this location and have finally found a way to get service without experiencing high blood pressure every time. Some of the staff even smile at me now and we make small talk, they recognize me from the countless times I go in to pick up my packages. And because I smile at them and speak politely, they actually listen and try to help me. Here's my advice: First, be aware that this post office serves an under-served neighborhood, so get off your high horse and stop expecting five- or even three-star service. Second, the postal employees don't understand and are impatient with the Spanish-speaking residents, and the feeling is mutual. So there's already a lot of built-in tension and resentment even before you step up to the window and start your transaction. Third, USPS deliverymen never leave any notices when they don't deliver packages, so you have to do the extra work and monitor the progress of your package online like a hawk, and when it says "Notice Left" on the USPS website you have to take the initiative, go to the post office with the long tracking number beginning with a 9, print it out from the machine near the entrance, and only then go stand on line at the package pick-up window. Don't try to stand on line with your tracking number only on your Smartphone and expect the clerk to type in the crazy-long number to locate the package. She won't do that and will just tell you to print out the slip from the machine. So save time and hassle and be ready with the slip AND your ID when you wait on line. I've seen customers go ballistic when the clerk tells them that she can't get their package without seeing ID. She's only following the rules, so don't waste everyone's time with a hissy fit because you forgot your ID but still insist on getting your package. Finally, if you're not willing to put up with the decrepit state of public services in a minority neighborhood, then pay extra and use UPS or FedEx.

I arrived just before my scheduled appointment time, only to be informed that the employee responsible for handling passport applications had gone to lunch and would not be returning for another hour. I explained that I had made an appointment in advance and did not understand why appointments were being scheduled if they were not going to be honored. The response I received was equally disappointing. I was told, "I already told you the person who handles passports won't be back for an hour. If you have a car, just go to the post office in Yonkers. I will give you the address." I found this response dismissive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable. Rather than acknowledging the inconvenience or offering an apology, I was essentially told to go somewhere else and figure it out on my own. What is the purpose of scheduling appointments weeks in advance if customers cannot rely on those appointments being honored? People make appointments for a reason. We plan our schedules, and set aside time with the reasonable expectation that the service will be available when promised. If the employee responsible for passport applications is scheduled to take a lunch break, the office should have procedures in place to ensure that appointments are either accommodated or that customers are notified in advance of any scheduling conflicts. It is not the customer's responsibility to absorb the inconvenience caused by poor scheduling or inadequate staffing. Basic courtesy, professionalism, and respect should always be expected. At the very least, I should have received an apology which would go a long way. Customers deserve to have their time respected and their scheduled appointments honored.

I'm going to go pick up my package Saturday and hope that it's not on the truck, since I can't reschedule There are some efficient and friendly counter workers, but this failure to even attempt delivery of packages is ridiculous and plainly endemic. This plus how often I'm getting my neighbors' mail (and vice versa?) and I'm in the first-time position of saying local USPS is as bad as FedEx or UPS. UPDATE: I went to pick up my heavy package and it broke my shopping cart. I was told by the woman at the desk that the delivery agents aren't attempting to actually unload the packages because they feel that they're being asked to do more than is possible, and this is their way of protesting. Hey, gang, I'm sorry the GOP is trying to kill your institution by catapulting all your income into pensions a million years from now to manufacture a budget crisis, but how's that translate into you screwing all of the customers over? Cripes, you could have just rung the bell and I would have come down and pulled it out of the truck myself. I've filed with the postal inspector for an investigation, but I doubt anything will come from it. Maybe if everybody else does, they will. Thanks for not doing your jobs, USPS.
