Things have improved here! One big improvement (for me) is the addition of mail storage lockers for those of us with P.O. Boxes. No more waiting in the long pick-up line for larger items. I'm very happy about this change. I've also noticed that the lines in general are a lot shorter lately. There seems to have been a change for the better in the way things are done at 10034. My previous review is below: I gave it two stars because of the entertainment value of the complaints and banter in the incredibly long lines here, and because the staff, while painfully slow at their jobs, seem to be genuinely nice folk. It's a really frustrating experience. While standing in the lines here I sometimes fantasize about taking over as manager, somehow improving morale and maybe sending all the staff to a typing course so I don't have to enjoy the nail-biting suspense of watching clerks search all the keys before beginning their tentative two-finger data entry. (How can basic data entry on a keyboard that you use every day be so difficult?) I don't know what the qualifications are for working here are but it seems like data entry, a lively step, the ability to efficiently find labels, packages, forms etc etc. are not among them. I'm starting to wonder if this is where they put burnt out mail-carriers to work. It's possible and it would explain a lot. When I bring my postage-paid ready to ship packages here, all they have to do is scan the package with the laser, put it in the pile and give me a receipt. Instead everyone in line needs to wait while the clerk looks at the packages like he or she has never seen mail before. I decided to pay for a PO box here, because USPS 10040 down the road cannot be bothered to deliver or leave notices for my mail and I've lost packages because of it. At least with a PO Box I know I'll get a delivery or a slip, even though it requires about 40 minutes of my day be used up standing in line to get my packages. It's so frustrating coming to this place to drop off several prepaid packages. I've been to many post offices and this one happens to be the closest to my current neighborhood. Regardless of coming in with prepaid packages you have to wait in most times, a long line because they do not have a larger drop off window. They have a very small "oversized" package bin to pull open, but every-time I come it's always full and when it's not, 3 packages out of several I bring is enough to fill it up. When you try to get their attention to empty the bin for you they just ignore you. It would be nice to have a bigger window or door like other post offices do so those who have many prepaid packages can walk right out without having to wait in line. read more

I came here at about 9:45 AM. There were a group of people standing in the corner waiting for someone to attend them. When I arrived, they called the 9AM passport appointment. How is that possible? It's 9:45 AM! But I minded my business and went on the line. I was the 2nd person on line. The line wasn't too bad. But because of an incident, it grew 5x in 20 minutes. Fortunately, I found a manager and explained that my package is already stamped and I just have to hand it over for mailing. She accepted it and I was able to leave by 10:15 AM. Incident A clerk told a young woman, waiting for someone to attend her, to go at the beginning of the line. Then another clerk told a customer, who picked up a package, that he must go to window 3 to get stamps. He did. About 3 minutes later, window 3 clerk (female, glasses) told the young man to move out of her area because a client was inserting her credit card in the reader. He took a step back. She repeated 3x, but he didn't know where to go because he was told to go there. Poor guy! The clerk then got an attitude and said that she wasn't going to attend him. (Is that even legal?) After the clerk finished with the credit card client, she disappeared for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the man and the woman at the start of the line said they were both next. Major confusion caused by lack of communication and procedures at this post office! The clerk returned only when a customer brought it to the supervisor's attention that there's no one at the window 3. I overheard this same customer say that this clerk (with glasses) does this all the time: she'll get annoyed with a customer, not attend him/her, disappear, and the line just keeps on growing. read more

We had a sudden death of a family member during a family visit in Michigan. We needed funeral clothing, fast. We figured we would have our expensive custom suit and dress/shoes, jewelry, belts, tie and so forth shipped to save a few hundred dollars on an already ballooning trip. I had my friend house sitting at our place in Inwood take our clothes to this post office when it opened, first thing am on Saturday to 2 day priority mail it to us in Michigan guaranteed by 3 pm Monday for the Tues am funeral, in which my husband was a pallbearer. We spent 3 hours total in this process and $150. Surprise, surprise. The package was nowhere to be found Monday afternoon or evening. I checked the tracking number on the reciept and LO AND BEHOLD IT NEVER LEFT THE INWOOD POST OFFICE! Thanks, Inwood USPS. You totally f*cked our close family's funeral up. Good job! Your incompetence has seriously affected us and now cost us about half a grand in unneeded expensive clothing, dress shoes for the whole family and failed shipping and payment for the failed shipping, not to mention hours of time during our bereavement. This is the most incompetent service I have ever experienced. You should be shut down, especially in light of all the other issues present. You should all be fired. Now, after all of this, I know I have at least an hour long battle ahead at the post office to retrieve said expensive clothing that they never bothered to ship, my refund, ect. The worst workers behind the counter they work at -15 MPH. The post office has about 10 different booths there's only 3 workers in there every time i go in there for the past 10 years!!!!. I don't know why the rating for this post office is so low. In comparison to other post offices I've been to this has to be one of the nicest and quickest one yet. Not only is the service here terrible (45 minute line at 9am?!) but they can't get their shit together backstage. It's February, and already this year this place has lost my package, failed to deliver mail, refused to provide a pick up slip, failed to fulfill a hold order, and couldn't locate my address to deliver (mind you, they've been delivering to me at this address for a year and haven't had trouble finding it)! You have any a 20% chance of getting a staff member who isn't completely rude. This post office has MAJOR issues. First off, ANY time I order a package I end up getting a pink slip to go pick it up myself. BUT, I have to wait an extra day to actually get the pink slip in my mailbox (for some reason they never leave it on the day that they "attempted delivery"). Their hours are 9-5 during the week, so any time I have a package to pick up I have go in to work late... usually about an hour late since I have to wait in line for at least 20-30 minutes, and then another 10 minutes for the ridiculously slow employee to retrieve my mail. One time I had 2 packages waiting at the post office but only got a pink slip for one of them. So I figured since they are both addressed to me and I have my ID I will have no problems picking up both. WRONG! The lady at the window refused to give me my 2nd package, so I told her I wasn't leaving until I had it in my hands. She proceeds to WALK AWAY and never came back. I had to jump over to a different clerk (very nice black gentleman), who gave me my 2nd package with no problems. It's almost as if some of these employees hate their jobs *so* much that they feel the need to inconvenience everyone else out of spite!!!! Today, I had a package waiting there and I was unable to take off work to go get it. So I left the pink slip and my ID with my roommate, and she was going to go pick it up for me. Except they won't give her my package because I didn't "authorize" her to pick it up... Our addresses on our IDs are THE SAME and she had all the necessary items to pick up, I don't see why there is a problem?? Best part is my roommate said that the employee she was with was trying to give her the package but some other cranky lady came out and said NO. Must be the same lady that I encountered in my previous experience. I tried to call the post office to give them a verbal "authorization" for my roommate to pick up the parcel, but after 5 minutes of going through automated prompts for the 800-number, I can't seem to get a REAL PERSON on the phone. I'll keep this short and sweet: 1.) There is a reason I'll still haul ass all the way down to my former post office near Columbia University on West 112th Street from when I lived on the Upper West Side from 2009 - 2010. If I need to mail out a large package, I make the trip. I've never had any issues there; thank goodness for their electronic postal system, I suppose. Ha! 2.) Package slips rarely appear in your mailbox when they are supposed to. They seem to only put in the slip when something has been hanging out at the post office for a few weeks--then they finally put a "final notice" in your mailbox on Friday and set a return shipping date by the following Monday. These people are flat out bad at their job and I advise NOT using USPS for any package shipments. Use FedEx or UPS before sending or receiving anything important. Being from Denmark I have never been at a post office where they are behind glass like that so maybe that makes it even worse when it comes to the personable factor. This is a review of the actual post office, not mail carriers. The only reason this post office deserves 1 star is because it provides the least imaginable amount of services for a US Post Office. I have never been to this post office without having to wait for at least 30 minutes (if not an hour) in a line of at least 20 people. Everyone who must use this post office to pick up a package or get a money order DREADS coming. Granted if you are sending a package or buying stamps, the process is considerably faster. I believe that the solution would be to hire additional employees. Employees also need an incentive to provide quick service to customers. WORST POST OFFICE EVER !!!!!!!! They need to hire a new staff (except for the asian guy). 1. The lines are long as hell, usually only 1 of 2 people at the windows. There is suppose to be two lines but since there is no clarity and organization in that post office everyone assumes it's one. Waiting time is usually about 15-1 hour standing in line. 2. The staff has a very very VERY bad attitude problem. You can ask them the simplest question and I guarantee you, they will jump down your throat! You don't like your job? Then quit. Ever since I moved to Inwood last year, I've been having some issues with this post office. I'm at the top floor of a 5 story walkup, so I can sort of understand the mail carrier not wanting to deliver the mail up the stairs. However, they also do not use the buzzer to let me know they are downstairs, because I'd be all too happy to just run downstairs and grab my package so I can have it that day instead of the next day where I'd have to stand in a long line at the post office for pick up. This has happened way too often than I'd like. I would pay for a certain shipping fee and the item never reaches me on that day because mail carrier didn't seem to want to let me know that he was downstairs. There have been days where I cancelled my plans because I knew a package was being delivered that day, only to find out later when I try to track my package online that the postman, supposedly, did come to my building and left a notice that the package could not be delivered. Waiting for USPS to deliver packages, for me, is such a waste of time. This is the first time that I've experienced such terrible delivery service in all that other states and cities that I lived in. read more

I'm going to buck the trend a bit here and give it two stars, just because something clearly changed around 2017: prior to that it was a complete crapshoot whether they even bothered trying to deliver any package no matter how small or light, but it's now been at least two years since I got one of the dreaded pink slips. And amazingly, on at least a couple of occasions over the past few years, I've managed to get in, mail a package and get out in under 15 minutes. Could this be progress? Does my building just have the one mail carrier who takes some pride in their job? Have I cursed myself by even saying this in public? Still, credit where it's due. But don't get too excited though: this is still a strong contender for the worst post office in nyc. If you _do_ have to pick up a package or buy a money order or get a passport or do anything else that requires getting into the dread second line here, then you my friend are doomed. A 30 minute wait is your best case scenario, and you shouldn't rule out an hour. (Around Christmas? Just give up and take the subway to the UWS.) There is only one window for package pickups, ever, and the process of finding your package even once you get to the head of the 20-deep line is so agonizingly slow that you'll suspect the person who took your slip decided to lie down and take a quick catnap. Heck, maybe they do: it would certainly explain a lot. And of course, it's 2019 and they still do not have even a stamp machine, never mind one of the all-in-one automatic meter and postage machines that most other post offices have. Do you know that there are USPS branches in Manhattan that actually leave the doors open after hours so you can just weigh your package, print the postage label and drop it in the collection bin? Meanwhile in Inwood we're stuck with a post office that wouldn't be out of place in the 1950s...in Siberia. read more

Oh, if I could give this place zero stars, I would. I realize the futility in reviewing a post office & postal workers -- good service is the exception rather than the rule, yet I have managed to find the worst one yet -- and my personal postal delivery woman takes the cake. She refuses to deliver parcels to the door. The excuse? -- she can't leave her mail unattended. How many times have I seen mailbags on street corners ... unattended (gasp!). I have lived all over NYC and this is the only neighborhood (Inwood) in which the service (in general, I might add ... UPS guy complains about delivering heavy packages. Clearly he is in the wrong line of work) is so subpar. Everyone is lazy and wants to cut corners. Calling the post office to complain? Pointless. "Oh, Miss So-and-so? She's great!" Of course she is. I wish I could give this post office half-a-star. The problems persist, the lines have gotten LONGER, less packages are actually being delivered despite me now living on the same block, no slips are left even though they say they are and when I call, no one answers and then the line drops my call. I have also buzzed postal workers inside to deliver packages, but then they did not leave anything because I didn't come down 5 flights to meet them at the door. And they still don't leave a slip. Getting my packages delivered is such a stressful event when it should be the easiest thing. What will it take for the USPS to do something about this branch??? read more

I'm only giving our fine, local post office one star because I don't think Yelp lets you go any lower. This is like a Third World post office. No stamp machines!! The longest, slowest lines I have ever encountered in any post office. I try to find ways to go use other post offices in the city if I've got things taking me to other neighborhoods. Often the lines at other post offices are almost as long, but in places like Chelsea at least I get to stand in a nice-looking building instead of what I imagine prison looks like. Wish I could give this place zero stars. Sometimes they deliver packages without a problem. Sometimes they just decide to keep your package for no particular reason and not tell you, so you have to figure it out on your own. They are only open during business hours and a short day on Saturdays, and there is ALWAYS a long line. If the line gets very long they SHUT DOWN a window. I recently mailed two bills and a card . The bills never made it and I cancelled the checks to the tune of $30 each . Decided to call USPS and informed them . Explained I mailed it on a Saturday morning about 9 am in front Post Office with a pick up time around 11 am . After a few calls back and forth it was determined that my bills wound up in the hands of a gang along with 300 other pieces of mail . So I sit and wait to see were we go from here . Oh a local postal officer told me they would send me a paper stating I mailed my bills on time and the situation. But Nothing yet! I guess enough people complained in order for things to change around here. Surprisingly enough there are 3 lines now when you go in. One for package pick ups, another for stamps & money orders, and then there's a line for all other inquiries.
