After a year of talks and tests, he persuaded me to have my prostate surgically removed. A year and a half after the surgery, my frequent-urination problem had not improved. His only advice was to have patience; sometimes bladders took a "long time" to "settle down" after a surgery. I consulted my family-practice physician. He figured out that the frequent-urination problem was not caused by something with my bladder or prostate. It was caused by high blood-sugar (diabetes). After I changed my diet and started taking diabetic medicine, my urination problem went away. How is it possible that after years of medical school, and more years of being a practical urologist, Dr. Ruff was unable to imagine an alternative explanation for an old man's frequent-urination problem other than that it was caused by a malfunctioning bladder/prostate? I can only think of two possible explanations. Either he is deeply stupid, or does not care about the welfare of his patients. My advice: stay away from him.

My vasectomy procedure did not exactly go according to plan, both from a procedural standpoint as…read morewell as front office proceedings. I explained to the doctor during our consultation in January how terrified I was of this procedure and that I wanted both the valium and nitrous to get me through it. He said no problem. I also received a printout of pre-op and post-op instructions, which includes them stating someone will discuss with me specimen collection. Well... 1. I was not administered the nitrous as requested, and as a result, I was entirely too coherent during the procedure. 2. The doctor failed to adequately numb the area prior to beginning the procedure, which, as you can imagine, resulted in incredible discomfort. After I yelled out, he apologized and applied additional numbing medication to help. 3. There was literally no post-op follow up discussion. Basically just snipped and left. No one bothered to check in on me or go over the specimen collection process as stated in their printout. 4. When I was paying the bill before leaving, I did not receive any kind of detailed statement to clarify what all I had just paid for. And then they billed me again for something that 1. I had already paid for and 2. Something they never even gave me (the Fellow kit for specimen collection). While the doctor's bedside manner was fine, it would have been nice for him to thoroughly explain how the procedure is done and what kinds of things to expect and where. Something as simple as "hey, this is where you are going to see incision marks, this is what those incisions will look like afterwards, this is how much post-op bleeding you should expect, etc.". Instead, I'm left wondering if I'm going to end up with scarred testicles that do not look right or feel right after everything settles down. It's a very uneasy feeling. Looking back, the entire process was disjointed and uncoordinated, and I'm not happy about it. Now I'm just praying the doctor did the job correctly, so I do not have to endure that nightmare again.

At all times he treated me with dignity and respect and as an advocate in my own care. He prefers to have discussions not in the exam room when you're wearing an ill-fitting thin gown, but in his comfortable office, where you're fully-clothed and feel like a grownup. He is calm and understanding. His office staff is also awfully nice. The hospital recommended this doctor to me and after having dealt with him, I understand why.

I called in to find out…read moresome cost estimates and was told by the person I talked to that I would have to come in and see a doctor to get an estimate. I deal with a bit of law and said I believe that you're required by law to give me some idea prior to that what I would be paying. She said no that wasn't correct. It is correct both for the State and Federally. It didn't seem worth arguing as I believe it was the billing dept since they don't have any directions on estimates. I don't expect everyone to be familiar with the law. I would hope that before stating things as facts they would check on aspects they are not sure of. I called back and planned on talking to someone higher up to get the estimate and I would guess the person who I talked to previously recognized the number and sent it on and I got the most curt person imaginable. Perhaps they were having a catastrophic day, quite unpleasant. After a quick explanation of the call and some abrupt responses, I got part way through my sentence and she stated a number. Given the rest of the conversation I decided not to even bother finding out what that price included as there can be several layers to any procedure. The impression that I was lacking in some way because I didn't already know all of this and why was I wasting her time was simple too strong. I'm certainly not the type of person who buys a car without knowing the price?
