We walked in about 20 minutes before closing (yes... we were those people ‍) and fully expected to be turned away. Instead, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and so helpful from the moment we stepped in. The food was absolutely fresh and delicious. We ordered the French Dip, Surf & Turf, and the Ahi everything was flavorful and perfectly prepared. For dessert, we couldn't resist the mango tart and banana cream pie, and they were the perfect sweet ending to our meal. We left happy, satisfied, and with full bellies. I went to Urban Plates for dinner with my wife because we were there anyway to pick up a Mango Tart for Thanksgiving. I have never been a big fan of the restaurant, as most of my meals there have been just ok. No exception on this visit. We both ordered grilled salmon. I ordered mine with a side salad and roasted potatoes. The restaurant was pretty busy, and it took a while before we got our meals. My salad was fine - nothing special. The potatoes were well-seasoned and very tasty. But, my salmon was very thin and very dry. It clearly was overcooked, probably because of how thin it was. My wife's salmon was thicker and more moist, but still nothing special. I would have given this experience even fewer stars, but the Mango Tart, which we enjoyed the next day, was fantastic, as always. It is pricey, but worth it. The next time I crave a Mango Tart, I will probably go somewhere else to eat first. read more

I recommend people get the surf and turf. It is so delicious. The steak is best medium rare and is bursting with flavor. The shrimp are well-cooked and very tasty, with Parmesan butter on top. When it comes to what Urban Plates claims, which is grass-fed, antibiotic-free, sustainably-farmed and freshly made meals, their clean ingredients have brought me back time and time again to eat in-house or to pickup takeout - until now. I will never support this business again. My complaint? A recent takeout order about a month ago, Braised Short Ribs, contained a micro pebble. Luckily for me, when I felt something in my bite of food, I spit it out right away so I wouldn't do damage to my teeth. We reached out right away by email to prevent other patrons from receiving the same batch of food. It was impressive to hear back from Patrick Smith, the GM of UP AV within 7 minutes of our email submission. He was apologetic and professional and requested a photo, which we sent. The risk involved in having any meal contain an outdoor item like a micro pebble is very shocking and disappointing but to not be compensated accordingly or offered a new meal is extremely bad customer service. Needless to say, a $23.25 plate that had a foreign and literally rock-hard object is extremely dangerous. My regular visits to Urban Plates Aliso Viejo has come to a stop. Patrick Smith has the ability to make things right - as one GM to another, in order to avoid negative reviews and impact to a business. A photo of the micro pebble is attached for your shock and awe. I wasn't expecting much out of my 2 tender chicken dinner but boy was I wrong! I loved whatever seasoning they put on the juicy chicken tenders. It was just the right amount of saltiness and spiciness. I loved every bite of it. The mashed potatoes were nice and fluffy too. The only thing I probably won't order again is the tomato soup. I was drawn to this place by its fresh looking food and healthy menu. I also like the fact that you can put together the meal of your choice with their sides. I ordered take out, sliced beef, garlic shrimp, Brussels sprouts and mushroom stuffing, which came to around $48., delivered, not bad, not great, but not bad. The delivery was impressively quick and smooth. Opening the beef, I saw thin, curled up, overcooked slices of beef, not at all like the photo of medium rare, thicker slices. I shudder to think what I would have gotten had I picked the "well done" option. The garlic shrimp was very good. However, the Brussels sprouts were a bit tough, and the mushroom stuffing's croutons were stale and also tough with no flavor. So, needless to say, I was less than satisfied. Urban Plates has really yummy and healthy food options. All their food is organic and made fresh. None of their meat are frozen or contain hormones which I love. Their service is fast too. You order at the counter and they bring it to your seat, or you can order ahead/togo. They have delicious salads, sandwiches and sides! I personally love the Asian Chicken Noodle salad with spicy Thai dressing. My only negative, as someone with a sensitive sense of smell is that it always smells really strongly of fish, due to the salmon they cook. It's a little hard for me to sit inside for that reason, but thankfully they have a nice and large heated outdoor patio. read more

We haven't been here for a while so re-visited it tonight. I had the grass-fed steak with brussel sprouts and carrots mixed with golden beets. Very good! Steak was tender and perfectly done. I've been to at least four or five Urban Plates locations over the last few years, from Playa Vista to various spots in Orange County. As much as I like their cozy interiors and generally friendly staff, there's one major issue that keeps me from stopping by more often - their food is too greasy. Take their grilled carrots, beets, or other veggies for example...they're usually drenched in oil, which defeats the whole purpose of getting something lighter and fresher - grilled. If I wanted food that heavy, I'd just get fast food. Because of this, I usually end up going to Tender Greens instead whenever I have the option. It's a shame because I do love the concept and vibe of Urban Plates, and the employees are always nice and accommodating. But until they figure out a way to make their grilled side dishes less greasy, I'll be treating this place more like fast food than the healthier alternative I'd hoped it would be. I've been avoiding anything called "urban", until today. Wife and I both decided to try it, and off we go (husbands understand this). Anyway, we were very impressed with the food, and the employees we interacted with were very nice. I had the Bleu Cheese Steak sandwich, wife had the turkey club. Both were quite delicious! Well, it really is great when you find a new restaurant that has delicious, fresh, well seasoned cooked food. Couldn't make it in to eat in this restaurant as my battery in the car died so l order in. The beef rib dinner w/ mashed potatoes and the exceptional sides are my favorite. Sometimes l just order several sides and eat these, yummy . Their menu is filled with great dishes, all cooked with taste and healthy.
