I drove by this store and had to stop to see the white mirrored sofa in the window. Couldn't believe how much good furniture was in one place. It's not new mass-produced crap, but vintage and antique furniture you can live with and enjoy for more than a year or two . Just got my paycheck and bought an amazing coffee table and lamp from the 1970s without too much damage to the wallet. Some of the stuff was in great original condition and some was redone--it all looked great. There's a lot of variety and things for any room in your house, even patio furniture. Uptown Modern has some beautiful pieces but they are outrageously expensive, I think the owners price their items way too high. I know MCM design is timeless and classic, but I have been able to find exact items for a lot less at other vintage stores and flea markets. It is a fun place to window-shop and get ideas, but I'd do my purchasing someplace else. read more

Uptown Modern has a delicious selection of retro/MCM/Danish modern furniture and assorted "chachkies". While not cheap, their prices are on par with other quality vintage furniture stores and also with eBay and Etsy (plus, they're local). You get what you pay for, plus they often run sales. I found their sales staff to be approachable but not pushy. The delivery company they recommend, Point A to Point B Delivery, was reasonably priced, prompt, courteous, and careful with my stuff. just like everyone else is saying, this place has a really great selection of quality mid century pieces and vintage finds. it's staged really well, and the pieces are in really good condition. you don't have to sift through a bunch of crappy vintage stuff - the quality of the stuff feels as if the pieces were bought at the equivalent to a Louis Shanks back in the day, not a Rooms To Go buy 1 room get the 2nd room free special. its all about the great editing here. i am a little baffled by the prices though. i mean i know a girl's gotta eat but, their were a couple of knockoff tulip chairs (not the ones in the window currently) that were clearly spray painted white and had that drippy home-made spray paint feeling texture to them that they wanted $400 a piece for. EDIT** so apparently those tulip chairs are real knoll pieces, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they were spray painted really badly . . . there was also a very large agave piece of artwork, not even artwork, it was a print - and get this, the owner even admitted it was pottery barn - and the crazy thing is, i think the asking price was what you would pay for a new pottery barn print now. also saw some great genuine eames upholstered armchairs with rolling feet in awesome condition and round conference table. i understand the prices are the way they are bc of the rarity and the rarity of having them all in one place. it takes time and money to find great vintage stuff like this - but for some of this stuff i'd rather save up a little bit more and maybe buy a new authentic piece from DWR - or heck, keep perusing garage sales, craigslist, sift through Room Service etc. if you got the dough and don't want to spend countless hours searching for good mid cent vintage stuff check this place out. oh yeah the jewelry collection here is crazy too, rachel zoe would totally blurt out an 'i diiiiieeeeeeeeee . . .' at all the great vintage jewelry. read more

This store has gorgeous, carefully picked vintage items, all in excellent condition. It is definitely a cut above the other vintage furniture stores I've been to in Austin. The prices for most items are extremely high, but perhaps worth it. These are not pieces that you purchase, use for a couple of years, then get rid of - a la Ikea. These are major purchases that you will keep for many years to come. If you're looking for quirky inexpensive things to purchase on a whim, this is not the place to go. If you're furnishing a new house, you have a sizable budget, and you want beautiful, one of a kind, vintage pieces, go here. Also, the online pictures don't do the items they have justice. The proprietor is most unpleasant. I've been to this store three times and each time was more unpleasant than the last. The first visit wasn't so bad, apart from the salesperson's attempted hard sell of an $800 velvet chair. On my second visit, I attempted to talk a bit with the proprietor -- an older, gray-haired woman who does not arise from her chair or behave pleasantly or smile, ever -- about my experience looking for mid-century furniture. She was cold and made it clear she was not interested in talking to me. After the second visit, I decided not to return but yesterday I was driving past and saw some pieces out in front of the store. I pulled in and was delighted to find two teak veneer bookcases for $195 apiece -- an actual reasonable price! The pieces were not refinished as most of the store's furniture is but were in great condition for their age. They were also vastly less expensive than the pieces inside the store, few of which cost less than $900. I conversed with one of the salespeople about wanting one (or both) of the bookcases but needed to race home and measure the bookcase-wanting nook in my house to make sure it would fit. I live 17 blocks away. As soon as I measured the nook -- an entire twelve minutes after I left the store -- I called and, unfortunately, reached the unpleasant proprietor instead of the salesperson with whom I had spoken. I told the proprietor that I had been looking at the bookcases outside and wanted to buy at least one of them -- the salesperson knew which one. The proprietor told me I would need to pick them up by five, which the salesperson had not said. I do not have a pickup so said I would have to figure out if I could manage that. Honestly, if the salesperson had told me I would have to haul them off the same day I would have just moved on with my life. However, my landlord happened to be around right after my phone conversation with the proprietor, and he said he would help me move the bookcase. Eight minutes after the first conversation, I called back to say I was on my way. The proprietor told me they had just sold one of the bookcases, and they would not hold the other one for me. That disappointed me, as I had liked them well enough to purchase them both. In any case, I figured that the proprietor would have told me if they had sold the one I preferred, so my landlord (who had dropped what he was doing to help me collect the bookcase) and I continued on to the store where I discovered that they had, in fact, sold the bookcase I preferred. The salesperson said she was sorry and that she had wanted me to have the bookcase and had even asked the purchasers to wait five minutes in case I called to say I wanted it. She said the purchasers had actually waited ten minutes, but this does not jibe with the fact that I called twelve minutes after leaving the store to say I wanted the bookcase, and they had not sold it at that point. The proprietor did not say she was sorry. (And I reiterate that I called twice within twenty minutes of leaving the store, first to say that I wanted the bookcase and then to say that I was on my way.) Then the salesperson announced to me that I had said to the proprietor when I called that I would take either one of the bookcases. Um. What I had said was that I wanted at least one of them, meaning that I would probably buy both and have the matching set. The condition of the second bookcase was not as nice as the one I had indicated I preferred, nor did it have the enclosed shelf I wanted, but I would have liked the set. The unpleasant proprietor decided I would take an inferior bookcase at the same price as the bookcase I wanted after she sold that bookcase out from under me and wasted my time and my landlord's goodwill. I probably would have bought this second bookcase, which was still a good price, but I did want not something in my home reminding me of the unpleasant experience and, more importantly, did not want to support the store financially after that display of disrespect. All of the interactions, including my trip home from the store and my trip back to the store, took place in a span of 32 minutes, but I have felt ugly about it since it occurred -- and frankly turned off from mid-century furniture in general. My landlord, alas, bought a wall hanging from the store, so they did get some business from us, but I am very sorry that I stopped at Uptown Modern at all. I went from having a nice day to feeling upset about the near miss of a bookcase I loved -- and I have been looking for a bookcase for months. I will not be returning and will instead spend my money in establishments that do treat me with respect. read more

This store has incredible merchandise and good sales. The owner is a doll and the staff is helpful and friendly. I found some gorgeous chairs there today. The key difference between this store and other vintage stores is that they completely update and reupholster the original frames and finishes so the vintage pieces look and feel modern and fresh. At uptown modern we found the most amazing piece of 1960's art for our bedroom and a walnut and glass coffee table that would go perfectly in our living room. I asked the sales person if she could give us a discount since we wanted to purchase two items. She said she would see what her boss could do and a few minutes later handed me new prices IN WRITING that were 15% off. My wife and I sat in the store and contemplated for a few minutes when the sales person approached and offered 20% off. While we were purchasing the items the owner was at the register and my wife started gushing over the piece of art we were buying. The owner quickly changed her tune and said she could not give any discounts on the piece of art. Although my wife's heart was broken over the piece of art, we walked out empty handed refusing to do business with someone using such shady practices to try to make a sale. read more

I am sorry to say that I have been by this store three times over the past year. I found the furniture interesting and of good quality. Sad to say that I found the owner unresponsive, verging on indifferent. It may be that if you do not appear able to make a significant purchase on first impression you are not welcomed graciously. Unfortunately not only have I been able to afford a purchase, but I may be a source of items for the store to buy. I have been in very nice vintage stores in California that were more welcoming even though they were well established with incredible inventory. This is unlike other vintage stores in Austin. Wow - I don't know a lot about modern furniture specifically, but this store has a beautiful collection of pieces in excellent condition. The staff were very helpful, and they circulate sales of 20% off various types of items as they become overstocked. There was a table and chairs set to die for of caliber I haven't often seen elsewhere, and an extensive array of credenzas and other furnishings. read more

My friend and I stopped in for an exploratory visit since I just moved. Wow! We were there for hours and found so many incredible pieces of furniture that were just beautiful (so many amazing credenzas), beautifully re-upholstered (I'm talking about you aqua love seat set), and beautifully arranged. Uptown Modern is a huge space filled with expertly curated, reasonably priced mid-century furniture. They always have lots of teak credenzas and desks from the 1960's. The upholstered furniture is re-vamped with gorgeous fabrics, and I always get a kick out of the selection of cool vases, lamps, and paintings. We are really lucky to have a shop like Uptown Modern. If I had more space and money, I would buy everything in the store. It's my first (and usually last) stop whenever I need a "new" piece of furniture. read more

I bought two German ceramic lamps from Jean a couple of years ago when I moved to Austin (Canadian snowbird, only here in winter). I had looked for bedroom lamps all over...high and low, high end and low end...because I know what I want and I wanted turquoise. Were they pricey? Well, I suppose so, but cheaper than many other lamps I looked at. I had to buy shades (Tipler's on 5th is the place to go for them) and finials. So that added to the price. Every time I look at these lamps, they make me happy. They are perfect in the space. They are unique. They were worth every cent. I grew up poor and love vintage at all levels, but you have to look for quality. Jean has quality. read more

I have purchased a few pieces from Uptown Modern, which, in my opinion, has the best selection of any shop from L.A. to Chicago. But, what is more impressive is their customer service. When the drawers on the dresser I purchased began to come apart (the piece is at least 50 years old) and I called around to get it fixed, I was quoted $250. Eventually, I thought to call Uptown and ask if their guys would take a look. They fixed them for free in a couple days' time!!! Awesome customer service!!! Thanks so much!!! read more

i am an importer wholesaler in houston, i sell a lot to furniture stores and decorators in austin. first of all mid century is hard to find, its not the boxed furniture you find at every other store, secondly austin is a very low end town when it comes to decorative furniture, like the other resale consignment stores on burnet, they sell low end partical wood furniture and they sell a lot of it...austin has always been known for this. look at all the other decorator import stores in austin, most of them have closed down and moved to houston or dallas. simply put you cant buy quality at the same price you sell partical wood furniture for... want to see high prices on mid century come to houston -- you will get total sticker shock.. read more
