Amazing selection range of furniture pieces and decor from the 50s - 70s, The customer service was fantastic . I was instantly made to feel at home with a warm greeting and attention to detail regarding what brought me in. It's a bit pricey for me but the quality for items that were sometimes older than my grandparents lol, they were in impeccable condition. I don't know exactly how much they've been refurbished but the pieces were all phenomenal and very chic looking. Many were of a timeless minimalist design from the contemporary era if I am not mistaken. They also had a bunch of vintage jewelry pieces made of real silver and turquoise and beautiful art made by local artists for those like myself who want something but also don't want to break the bank. I adore this place. It's full of stylish treasures and the people are warm and helpful. I saw some mentions of them being cold, but my only experience that might have been taken unfavorably was with a woman who had the sales floor on her own and was covering many tasks. She made her way to me and was great and we had fun going through the many things there. I bought a gorgeous MCM dresser, a big beautiful statement lamp, MCM nightstands and fun, unique decorative pieces. The refurbishing is top notch and, at this level, you do pay for it but it's worth it because the pieces are perfect and timeless. If you can't swing the furniture just yet, just fill those IKEA shelves with some of their unique pieces and you still have the look. We moved back to Newport Beach but I truly miss this place..total gem. read more

This furniture in here is truly beautiful, some of the best in town, but the prices are outrageous, and the service staff is rude. No one ever even greets us when we walk into this store, maybe they can tell we could never afford their absurd prices... I'll say it again because it's true... Their furniture is amazingly beautiful and always in good conditions, but I can find very similar quality items at other vintage stores in the area for 50% less or more. They also sell refurbished pieces at Uptown Modern without clearly indicated which pieces are original and which have been altered. Save your money for Hog Wild or Room Service Vintage. You might have to search a little longer for that perfect piece, but you can probably buy three times as much stuff and deal with much friendlier people. read more

Uptown girl, she's my uptown girl, you know I'm in love with an.... Uptown Modern! This might possibly be one of my favorite stores in town. It is absolutely fantastic. I've bought furniture from here, books, and other decor. If you're a mid-century loving girl like me, you will fall in love with Uptown Modern. They find some of the best midcentury gems, clean them up, and sell them. They are constantly rotating inventory and so there's always a reason to pop in. Sometimes they feel a little over priced but never unreasonable. There are other places in town that have similar items that charge 2-3 times the price. The service is always great, the place is always clean, and the inventory is always buzzing. read more

I came in on a Saturday to buy a piece of furniture. They don't help with loading the furniture on Saturdays. Ever. I checked this with an owner/manager today. The response I received was odd and abrupt when I asked what single people should do, not sorry, nope, no one to help load on Saturday. They are willing to give you the name of a service who will drive over, help you carry, charge you and then leave. Also, prices are at the level of mint antiques but many in this store are refinished which is not worth the same amount. They do not negotiate over condition or refinishing. They have permanently lost my business. read more

I love this place so much. They turn their inventory over frequently (it's a popular shop!). We purchased my all-time favorite lounge chair / ottoman and rosewood shelves from them. Follow them on Instagram to find out about their Sidewalk Sales. When they get a bunch of inventory they tend to put many things on sale and occasionally a sidewalk sale. I have found a beautiful credenza here that was over 6 feet long for dirt cheap, great condition. Parking is hard here (only about 6-8 spots). Big showroom, lots of unique pieces to look at. I tend to only come here during their sales because full price is a little high for me personally here. But those full prices are definitely fair...beautiful vintage pieces in fantastic condition. Now there's a lot of reviews here that say the workers are rude. I've had both good and cold experiences here. It felt like, when they realize that you aren't going to buy something, they move on and ignore you completely. Or they just sit in the back while you're walking around and don't acknowledge you until you are within speaking distance. Whether or not that was the intent, it's the vibe I've gotten multiple times. Now this doesn't bother me much when I'm in the store browsing. I usually know exactly what I'm looking for. But if this behavior bothers you, just go to another one of the many vintage furniture stores on Burnet. I'd give it a try if you are looking for mid century modern furniture. You'll definitely find a variety of furniture in fantastic condition. read more

Being the former owner of a vintage store, I am amused that people consider Austin Modern "expensive." "High-end" in the vintage world is $50,000 George Nakashima tables, $30,000 Jean Prouve cabinets, and $80,000 Paul Evans consoles. Austin Modern might be expensive compared to Goodwill, but the prices here are totally fair considering the caliber and quality of the merchandise, as well as the level to which much of it has been restored and reupholstered. Case in point: today I went in for their warehouse sale and found a gorgeous rosewood dining table for $1,900. Think about it, people: Solid rosewood. Not veneer: SOLID. That is a material that essentially no longer exists in the furniture field because it was so overforested for decades. Try finding anything comparable anywhere else in town and you will fail. And that was at the high end of the store's offerings; most of it came in at under $1,000. I also think people fail to take into account the cost of refinishing/refurbishing damaged items. Even if you have a go-to guy who does quality work for cheap, as I'm guessing Jean does, it can still be a costly endeavor to redo something, particularly wood. Most of Jean's stuff is in pristine condition and is priced appropriately. I won't comment on the jewelry and clothes, those not being my specialties, but furnishing-wise what Jean offers is a great selection of mainly '60s vintage, not much of it attributable to a particular designer but most of it in great shape. Yes, she has the occasional showstopper -- presently a jawdropping Milo Baughman mirrored couch in the front window -- but most of her pieces are basics that will provide a nice accent in a home primarily decorated with newer furniture, or fit in nicely in an all-vintage environment. Oh, and by the way, the chair in the main photo is by Adrian Pearsall and one of my all-time favorites. read more

My emotions are very mixed on this place. I like it because if you're looking for something mid-century modern, they have a fantastic selection. In fact, although some of the items they have were mass-produced 50 years ago, they can now be so rare that you may end up with the only one of its kind. That's pretty cool. However, at the same time, I kind of feel like mid-century design shouldn't be limited to those who can afford it and, as far as shops that specialize in this sort of stuff goes, they're far from affordable--even on items that they will acknowledge are design knockoffs (Eames recliners and the numerous copies produced over the last 40 years immediately come to mind). To sum up, if you're looking for something cool or unique, Uptown probably has it or can get it for you. But, if you're doing it on a budget, you may find some cheaper options out there. read more

Just to clarify, my wife now works at this store part time, so my views may be influenced slightly. Now that I have that out of the way, let me give you my thoughts. First off, this store wears many hats. They specialize in what I've been told is called "mid-century" or vintage furnishings and jewelry. However, they also carry vintage clothing and many other items that can be used to decorate your home including original works of art by local artists and vintage prints. I grew up in a household where my mother was always antiquing and our home was constantly filled with a dizzying array of furniture that was always being moved in and out for newer or more rare pieces. So, the whole antique thing is not of my interest in any shape or fashion because all I think of are terribly boring trips to auctions and stores for hours upon end looking for items from the 19th or 18th centuries. However, Uptown Modern carries stuff that I find fascinating and would love to have adorn my home. They specialize in items from the 20's to 70's and most of it meets the "new" ideals of modern design that were popular in earlier decades. Many different sofas, chairs, dining sets, tables, mirrors and tons of different items from several different eras are available and the owner, Jean, is constantly updating the inventory. Most items are original and in great shape, but when necessary, she takes worn items and has them repaired or reconditioned to their original splendor. There are also very unique items like a large walnut screen that could be affixed to your home or wall and is like nothing I've ever seen (except for at Fino at the chef's table if you know what I'm talking about). The store features over 5000 sf of floor space over 2 buildings and includes a courtyard area with awesome outdoor patio and lawn furniture (some of which may make it to my own home soon). I don't know much about the jewelry, but there is a ton to choose from and you are bound to find something interesting or of the type you are interested in. If you have a lady friend that likes something unique and you don't believe a Kiss Begins with Kay...then this might be the place to look. They also have a large assortment of vintage clothes that are reasonably priced and I have been tempted to pick some up myself because they don't have the same markup fever that many of the other vintage clothing stores in Austin seem to have. Finally, Jean supports local artists by letting a select few display some of their work for sale and for god sakes people, there's nothing wrong with supporting Austin's large creative community. I don't think there are very many stores in Austin specializing in this type of furniture and I'm sure that there is not another store carrying such a wide variety of stuff. I highly recommend you stop by and check out this locally owned Austin business. read more

I cannot stress how amazing this furniture store is. If you're looking for people who genuinely care about the vintage furniture they sell, here you have it. I have to disagree with the quips about Uptown being over-priced. If you seek a rip-off modern piece that is impeccably new and low priced(for what you think you're getting) , with no character, avoid this place. Leave it to the customers who desire the real deal, perhaps sold with some slight flaw (like the drawer I have to realign on my credenza every two weeks) but so beautiful and impressive in quality and style. I have purchased two credenzas here now( one for my bedroom ,one for the living area) and one deep arm chair for my guest bedroom. All three were astonishingly low priced. I challenge anyone to find a late vintage 1950s credenza as beautifully kept and as affordable as the ones I found here. Everything comparable I have looked at was circling the low 2,000 mark, where I came in at Uptown MUCH lower. The only negative, is that my fiance may have just discovered my love affair with this amazing little store. i Uptown has been and will continue to be my Monday ritual..atleast until my home is so crammed full of gorgeous furniture I have to move out of state to house it all. read more

The store owner was completely unresponsive to my requests to evaluate a vintage early 60's chair for purchase. The fact that she didn't want the chair is of no consequence to me. What IS of consequence is that I took time to follow the process for selling on her website, including taking pictures, and followed up a couple of times. Maybe she can afford to ignore people who are bringing potential business her way, but I doubt it in this crowded market. Also, I stopped by the store hoping I could visit personally with the owner but she wasn't there--what was there was a lot of overpriced furniture (some cool stuff, I will admit, but still overpriced). I will say the guy she has working for her was very polite and helpful. He's probably the only reason the doors stay open. read more

We first visited Uptown Modern just to look and see what they had in stock, as we love mid century furniture. After we decided to move to Austin and bought an apartment, we knew that we would furnish it from here, and the staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. I have read reviews commenting that staff were not friendly - our experience has been completely the opposite to that, All of the staff have been lovely and we have really enjoyed our times in the store. We even brought our dog up to meet them, and photos of all of our furniture in the apartment. Aside from the staff, the selection of furniture is excellent, and prices are very reasonable, especially compared to similar quality suppliers elsewhere in the US. read more

This is a gem of a place. The selection is great and all the pieces are in good condition. The prices were surprisingly reasonable. I went in on a tip that they had some good boots. The second I walked in I really wished I was in the market for furniture right now. You can tell that someone takes a lot of care in what they choose to bring in. I really want to like this place. The pieces are appear to be quality. That being said, I have been here twice and not once have I been greeted. The staff presents as pretentious and unwelcoming. I don't want to pull the race card...but eh? It's somewhat comforting to see other reviews mentioning the customer service of Uptown Modern, or lack thereof. This is a great store if you're rich, looking for ideas to decorate, or you're willing to look out back in the warehouse for deals. Like other reviewers have said, their stuff ain't cheap. That being said, I basically furnished my whole living room with stuff from here for under $600. You could easily spend that at some bo-bo microfiber couch/fake wood/crappy geometric print rug joint. I just spent a lot of time searching through what they had and asked for recommendations based on my budget. She even gave me a little discount for getting everything at once. The cherry on top is that their delivery guys are super cute. read more

For someone buying a house from the 60's, this place is a dream come true! I seriously feel like I'm walking on a set from I Dream Of Jeanie when in the store. All of their furniture and art are from the 50's, 60's, and 70's and in really amazing condition. And many times they have re-upholstered the chairs/couches. The items that REALLY catch my eye are the dining room sets and the credenzas---- yo necesito! The only thing that kinda scares me is some of the pricing, yow! But I can kind of understand the pricing because they are true vintage pieces that are in amazing condition. I hope to be a buying customer one day soon! read more

Stopped in for the first time today on a whim and will definitely be back. . . an amazing selection (don't forget to look in BOTH buildings, separated by the patio), great quality, and reasonable prices for true vintage pieces. I fell in love with a set of chairs that I wish wasn't a set. Kind of like how I once fell in love with a girl that I wished wasn't a bitch. Or the time I fell in love with another girl but I didn't fall in love with her boyfriend, so the whole deal was pretty much a non-starter. But you don't have to worry about any of that hear. You're safe among furnishings here. We're all far less vulnerable, I think, because this store is around. read more

People tend to complain about the high prices of vintage mid century pieces, but come on. There's a resurgence in this type of interior design, the pieces are in limited quantity, and it's even more rare that they're in good condition. I don't want to drop my life savings but the types of pieces that Uptown Modern sells are investment pieces and if they're in great condition, that means they're durable enough to have survived the last 60 years or so in somebody's home so they're most likely good quality. I dig Uptown Modern. I have a glass greyhound sculpture that I purchased there as well as two Bertoia-style chairs and a side table. These vintage pieces are unique and combine nicely with my new modern pieces. Three bits of advice if you're really into this type of stuff? One, if there's a classic piece that you're dying to have a Uptown Modern then get it when you see it. Pieces like Knoll tulip tables don't stick around long. Two, if you're strapped for cash, sign up for their mailing list. They announce special sales quite often. And three, if you think you want it but you're not sure, they'll typically let you take it on approval. Uptown Modern is a cool neighborhood jewel and I look forward to purchasing more unique vintage pieces in the future. read more

It was delivered at exactly the time they told me it would be. Some stuff is a little pricey but compared to brand new, crappy furniture it's still a great deal. It can be hard to find real examples of mid-century modern classics such as Knoll tables, Eames' chairs, and Barcelona chairs. There is , however, one store in the Austin area that has these classics along with other vintage items. This great store is Uptown Modern located in the Courtyard Shops at 5453 Burnet Rd., (512) 452-1200. I was in the store recently and visited with the owner Jean Heath and she informed me that it is getting harder to find mid-century modern furniture, because people are increasingly aware of what they have and not releasing that product cheaply to thrift stores, estate sales, and garage sales. I personally know Jean and think she has a great eye, and can tell you that she always has great mid-century finds in store - So I often stop by just to see what new items she has found. Jean is a 20 year veteran of the antiques business and has great passion for what she does - stop by and see her and tell her "Hi" for me! read more

My husband and I LOVE uptown modern. They have a great mix of vintage Danish and mid Century modern furniture, and beautiful vintage Jewelry in the glass display case near the register. The selection is always changing, what you see one time, you may not see again. They also have great sales - which is when we go, as it makes the expensive furniture more "affordable". We have bought several pieces from here recently for our new home. We always go in just to "take a look", and end up getting something eventually. The vintage pieces are in excellent condition, and often they reupholster them and/or redo them. They have a website where you can view most of the inventory, but we have often found pieces there that aren't on the website. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the pieces they have. Well done, beautiful shop. read more

My new favorite store! LOVE their vintage furniture. Gave it 4 out of 5 stars because of the price; but I get why it's so expensive. They need a layaway plan for sure. ;) When you can buy something from them, on sale, that's when it's the best. I found a $900 vintage leather couch, with a custom handscraped wood frame, on sale with them for $300. I was elated. Uptown Modern is a fantastic shop. This store is on the more upscale end of the vintage stores I visit-- their prices are just a smidge beyond what I feel good about, but then again, what they sell tends to be in very good shape. When I'm looking for something for my home, I always come by here, and I have several pieces I'm very happy with. I've been to other similar stores across the country, and I do think their prices are ok comparatively... But when I see things on clearance for hundreds of dollars less than they were originally listed, it makes it hard for me to want to pay their full price. Then again. when they've had something that was just what I was looking for, I have done that. Another thing that I have mixed feelings about is that they tend to refinish a lot of things, and I wonder if I'm paying for the work they've put into the item when I would have been just as happy with it in its less than perfect shape. So, I guess the upshot here is that if you're looking for vintage furniture that is in really great, sometimes like-new or remade-to-resemble-new shape and you're happy to pay for that quality, this is your spot. If you are ok with your vintage looking like it's been loved, this might not be your top fave. But it's always fun (SO fun) to look!! read more

Expensive, but quality furniture and fantastic service. The store is not very big, but they had beautiful pieces, and everything was in great shape. Prices are high because they're the only vintage furniture store in Austin that redo their pieces themselves. The furniture ended up being out of our price range. $800 for the gorgeous waterfall table we fell in love with. :( The lady that helped us (forgot her name) was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. We told her we were looking for a mid-century desk. Although they didn't have very many in at the moment, she took our information and told us she'd let us know if anything came in. Then she gave us one of those "vintage over town" pamphlets that list all the good vintage stores in Austin. She told us about the selection and styles of each store and circled all the ones she thought would be a good fit. She even wrote down stores not on the list, including a store that opened 2 weeks ago! The help we received was incredible. Beautiful store, lovely merchandise, but expensive beyond belief. I mean, stupid expensive. I recently visited Austin on a vintage buying spree, and happened upon this store. Yes, you will find some unique pieces here, but there are many pieces that you can find elsewhere, at a much more realistic price. Case in point, I fell in love with a vintage metal medicine cabinet here. It was quite pricey. A few hours later I found a similar, even more interesting one for $700 less! Although we didn't buy anything because the credenza we loved had a sold sticker on it, this store has better quality "vintage" items than other stores we had checked out in the area. We went in when they were having a 20% off furniture sale and with that discount, the prices seemed very appropriate. The store has a nice flow to it and there is a mixture of different styles. The worker was very nice when we asked a question about a piece. I'm surprised to see people saying this place is pricey. I rather pay a little more for something that is clean and in good shape than something busted and dirty for a cheaper price. I appreciate the cleanliness of the items. I drove by this store and had to stop to see the white mirrored sofa in the window. Couldn't believe how much good furniture was in one place. It's not new mass-produced crap, but vintage and antique furniture you can live with and enjoy for more than a year or two . Just got my paycheck and bought an amazing coffee table and lamp from the 1970s without too much damage to the wallet. Some of the stuff was in great original condition and some was redone--it all looked great. There's a lot of variety and things for any room in your house, even patio furniture.
